In the winter months of 2018–2020 the Kola Branch of the Unified Geophysical Service RAS conducted experiments on the joint registration of avalanches in the Khibiny mountain range using seismic and infrasonic sensors during work on the forced descent of the snow mass. The aim of the experiments is to assess the possibility of avalanche detection using the geophysical methods. The lack of representative statistics on the frequency and regularity of avalanches is the reason for the relevance of developing methods of their remote registration. The difficulty of registering avalanches is due to their occurrence often in hard-to-reach areas and in poor visibility conditions. To record signals generated by avalanches, different configurations of infrasound panels consisting of three spatially separated sensors (MPA 201 or Hyperion IFS-4000 microbarographs) and a portable seismic station Guralp CMG-6TD were used. As a result of the experiments, infrasound recordings were obtained at different distances from the avalanche source. The infrasound group recordings collected from the experiments were processed using an automatic detector implementing amplitude and cross-correlation signal detection methods. The spectral composition of the recordings and their characteristic appearance were analyzed. Avalanche-induced signals are characterized by long duration and changes in azimuth to the source. The dominant frequencies of the signal lie in the region of 1–10 Hz. Conclusions are made about the insufficient sensitivity of the seismic method when the seismometer is located at a distance of the first kilometers from the avalanche source, as well as the high applicability of the infrasound method for recording the facts of avalanches. The results obtained will make it possible to develop a methodology for automatic detection of signals generated by avalanches using the data of infrasound registration. This is the necessary basis for building a system for continuous monitoring of avalanche activity.

The paper provides a brief description of results of Spitsbergen glacier observations by the seismic method. The study has been carried out both by permanent and temporary stations data. Characteristic features of glacier-related seismic events have been shown. Main areas of glacier seismic activity on the Archipelago have been revealed. A detailed study of Horsund-fjord glacier activity has been carried out using local seismic station HSPB data. Temporal and spatial distributions of glacier-related events have been obtained for the area. Season variations in temporal distribution of the events have been found

Abstract—The paper presents the results of many years of research on the compilation of a consolidated, refined, unified earthquake catalog for the western sector of the Russian Arctic for the entire instrumental observation period, in particular for the period from 1908 to 2020. The catalog includes data on recent seismicity in areas previously unavailable for detailed seismic monitoring. Based on the results of the study, we were able to more accurately determine the spatial distribution of seismicity in the region and compare the instrumental data with parameters of lineament-domain-focal (LDF) models of the General Seismic Zoning maps (GSZ, from Russian term abbreviated as OSR)—OSR-97 and OSR-2016. In the western sector of the Russian Arctic, the highest seismicity is observed in the continent-ocean transition zone, in the Belyi (Kvitøya) Island, Novaya Zemlya and Severnaya Zemlya archipelagos. The very shelf of the Barents and Kara Seas is characterized by rare and scattered seismicity. The configuration, the maximum possible magnitudes, and the depths of the seismogenic layers in the LDF models of OSR-97 and OSR-2016 maps are not always consistent with the instrumental data and need a correction. The consolidated refined earthquake catalog can be used as a basis for the further research aimed at seismic hazard assessment of the territory, construction of geodynamic models, and study of the stress-strain state of the Earth's crust. The goal of this work was to develop computational techniques for sulphates, nickel and copper accumulation in the snow in the local pollution zone. The main task was to reveal the peculiarities of formation and pollution of snow cover on the region with complex cross-relief. A digital cartographic model of aerotechnogenic pollution of snow cover in the landscapes of the local zone has been developed, based on five-year experimental data. Data regarding annual emissions from the industrial complex, information about distribution of wind and the sum of precipitation from meteostation "Nikel" for the winter period, allowed the model to ensure: * material presentation in the form of maps of water capacity and accumulation of sulphates, nickel and copper in the snow over any winter period in retrospective; * calculation of water capacity and accumulation of pollutants for watersheds and other natural-territorial complexes; * solution of the opposite problem about the determination of the emissions of sulphates, nickel and copper from the enterprise by measuring snow pollution in datum points. The model can be used in other northern regions of the Russian Federation with similar physical-geographical and climatic conditions. The relationships between the sum of precipitation and water capacity in the landscapes of the same type and also the relationships between pollution content in snow and relief, pollution content in snow and distance from the source of emissions, were used as the basis for the model.
