Small finance banks (SFBs) are a special category of banks incepted by the Reserve Bank of India in 2015 to cater to the financial needs of the underserved population of the country with the aim of financial inclusion. They serve the priority sector and the unorganised sector of the country. This article analyses and evaluates the performance of these banks on the basis of various financial parameters such as capital adequacy, asset management, management quality, earning quality and liquidity derived from the CAMEL framework. Following a robust evaluation methodology, namely data envelopment analysis (DEA), a sample of all the SFBs operating in India to date is taken. As per the composite rating of CAMEL, results show that the majority of SFBs exhibit satisfactory performance. Utkarsh SFB Limited is ranked at the first position and is followed by Fincare SFB Limited on the second position. Jana SFB Limited stands at the last position amongst all the banks, preceded by ESAF SFB Limited. The results of DEA show average inefficiency among SFBs. The calculated efficiency scores of SFBs highlight that Capital SFB, Fincare SFB, Jana SFB, Shivalik SFB and Utkarsh SFB are the most efficient banks, with a technical efficiency score of 1. ESAF SFB has the lowest efficiency score. Scale inefficiency is the major reason for inefficiency. The study provides valuable insights to the authorities, managers and investors about the performance of these banks and gives them a future vision of the sustenance of these banks. Additionally, it aims to test and analyze the financial performance of sustainable business practices for commercial banks. This study was conducted on commercial banks, specifically focusing on bank groups categorized by core capital levels 3 and 4, listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, covering the period from 2017 to 2022. Ultimately, financial performance has a significant positive influence on sustainable business, suggesting that stronger financial performance contributes to the long-term sustainability of a bank's operations. The implications of these findings are, first and foremost, that financial institutions should prioritize incorporating sustainable and environmentally friendly practices into their operations to improve their overall financial performance and emphasize the critical role of digital transformation in enhancing financial performance. Consequently, financial institutions are required to allocate resources towards information technology infrastructure and cultivate digital capabilities to adapt to evolving customer demands, such as offering 24/7 banking services from any location. Secondly, financial institutions should not stay far away from digital disruption, but rather embrace it and adapt their strategies accordingly, which includes allocating an adequate budget for IT infrastructure investment and accessing digital services that meet the banking industry's demands, resulting in effective communication of sustainable practices. The study utilizes a random effects regression model to investigate the impact of various factors on non-performing loans using panel data from 10 commercial banks in Nepal from 2013–2022. The study's theoretical framework draws on established economic theories, including Kalecki's business cycle theory and Diamond & Dybvig's banking theory. Small Finance Banks (SFBs) are specialised banking institutions incorporated to serve the unbanked, small and underserved customers. Their primary motive is to improve financial access by providing access to essential financial services. This article examines the performance of ten SFBs in India over four years. The CAMELS model has been applied for performance analysis, which provides performance and ranking of various SFBs using the model’s six parameters: Capital adequacy, Asset quality, Management, Earning quality, Liquidity and Sensitivity. This study will help identify SFBs in financial distress, which will be helpful in timely action for their revival. Financial analysts and credit rating agencies can also use the comparative performance of these banks to frame their opinion or ratings. The common public, including customers and investors, can frame their short-term and long-term investment decisions based on the performance and ranking of these institutions. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the policy implications of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) 2016, which was enacted in India as part of banking sector reforms. The study aims to answer the question: Has the policy helped banks enhance their asset quality, stability, and performance?" To determine the effect of IBC on these research variables, we used a difference-in-difference (DID) regression technique. We collected a sample of 924 bank year observations for three categories of banks -- public, private and foreign ownership banks for the period during 2010 to 2021. We first analysed the ownership-wise impact of IBC on asset quality, stability and performance. Then, we further investigated the policy's implications by dividing banks into unhealthy and healthy categories based on their Z scores. In our findings, bank stability and asset quality for three ownership banks (private, public and foreign banks) is significantly different from each other. For overall sample observations, the relationship between asset quality and banks stability is negative and significant. This suggests that a deterioration in asset quality leads to less change in bank stability, i.e. the result confirms banks' loan evergreening problem during the reform period. The results estimating the impact of IBC on stability of public sector banks was insufficient, except for risk capital. Our findings show that public sector banks have tightened their lending standards in anticipation of potential asset quality deterioration. However, our analysis of the IBC's impact on unhealthy banks' asset quality, stability and performance did not align with the policy's objectives. While the IBC policy in itself is passing through several changes in recent, the study's results can aid policymakers in better assessing the impact of banking policies in India and can be used a reference for future policy formulation. A few related areas where the study results will aid to help are insolvency resolution, developing liquidation and cross-board insolvency framework. Asset quality management plays a critical role in shaping the financial health and profitability of banks. Moreover, the frequent loan scams have made banking activities questionable. Therefore, non-performing loans (NPL) must get proper consideration and supervision to lessen the occurrence of loan scams (Abdul Aziz et al., 2009). This study investigates the relationship between asset quality management and bank profitability, focusing on key indicators such as return on equity (ROE) and return on assets (ROA). Additionally, we examine specific metrics related to asset quality. The impact of asset quality management on bank profitability is investigated in this research through ten banks between 2017 and 2021. ROE and ROA will be used to measure the dependent variables of profitability; NPL, the total impairment charges to total operating income, and the total impairment charges to gross total loans (TL) will be used to measure the independent variables of asset quality management. Our analysis reveals a strong positive association between effective asset quality management and bank profitability. Banks that actively manage their asset quality tend to exhibit better financial performance. Specifically, higher provisioning for impaired assets (as reflected in the impairment charges ratios) is linked to improved bank stability and resilience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study reveals the long-term effects of several variables on Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) in Islamic banks (IBs) and conventional banks (CBs) in Malaysia. Using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) technique, the study supports a proactive approach and finds a persistent association between NPLs and asset quality, loan quality, unemployment rate, and inflation rate. Using the ARDL approach, the analysis covers the monthly period from 2018 to early 2021. This study aims to investigate NPLs at two different times: before and after the COVID-19 epidemic. The findings indicate that The ARDL model identifies Loan Quality 1 and 2 as significant influencers of NPLs in Malaysia's CBs. At the same time, asset quality and the unemployment rate show no significant impact. In contrast, IBs show a strong positive correlation between Asset Quality and NPL, with economic factors like the Unemployment Rate and Inflation Rate significantly affecting NPL, reflecting the unique risk-sharing nature of Islamic finance. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased healthcare costs, making it crucial to purchase insurance to protect oneself and their families. To ensure fair treatment and protect policyholders, insurance companies must analyse their performance using the CARAMEL model. This study focuses on selected health insurance service providers in India, collecting data from annual reports, Particulars Company's website, and IRDA's website. The study evaluates the performance of Indian health insurance companies using various ratios and statistical methodologies. Star Health & Allied Insurance Company Ltd. received the highest gross direct premium, while Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co. Ltd. received a lower gross premium. Stand-alone and public health insurance companies performed better in terms of net premiums. The CARAMEL model showed notable significant differences between 2016 and 2022, with the only United India insurance company showing a partial positive correlation. The overall regression analysis resulted in three key ratios: capital adequacy, asset quality, and risk retention. Results show a notable significant difference in gross premiums before-after the pandemic, but also a decrease in various ratios, suggesting a need for financial stability and health improvement. It is essential to understand the variables that affect asset quality because of their implications on the risk to financial institutions and for financial supervision and financial stability. There exist empirical studies establishing significant relationships between corporate governance and asset quality, and credit administration and asset quality. What was missing that this study investigated based on Ghanaian financial institutions was the mediating role of human capital. Based on a correlational research design and randomly selecting financial institutions and their employees as respondents. The study resulted that human capital fully and significantly mediates the relationships between corporate governance and asset quality, and credit administration and asset quality. Therefore, human capital elements of the knowledge, skills, and experience of the board members and employees are fully critical in the attainment of good asset quality. The study recommends that financial institutions must fully include the level of the human capital of their employees and board members when evaluating the factors that must exist to ensure that they have good asset quality. Analysts continue to demand explanations for the continuous flow of depositors’ and investors’ funds to persistently underperforming banks, while universal banking is premised on the ability to outperform the market. This study examines the effect of bank-level factors on the profitability of banks under changing economic conditions, using a dynamic panel system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) technique for panel data collected from 18 universal banks in Ghana. The data collection period was from 2007 to 2021. The analysis revealed that lagged return on assets, capital adequacy ratio, and deposit to total asset ratio have a positive influence on bank profitability, whereas lagged return on equity, bank size, expenditure, and asset quality negatively impact profitability. While the effect of these variables on profitability is expected considering the literature, the evidence obtained for asset quality is inconsistent with the explanations in the literature as an increase in asset quality is expected to drive an impressive trend in profitability. Furthermore, a negative relationship was found to exist between economic growth and bank performance when economic expansion exerts a deteriorating effect on the returns on bank assets. This can be linked to the dispersion of investors’ and customers’ funds to other investments, which limits the amount of funds available to the banks to grant credits for interest income. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that bank-specific dynamics adapt to changes in economic conditions which can be explained by the normative guidelines of the Adaptive Market Hypothesis.

In the context of the fact that the structure of the Vietnamese banking market has undergone many fluctuations, which has had an impact on banking activities, and the fact that many related studies have been carried out, but the answer is still limited and inconsistent, it is necessary to study the impact of the market structure on banking operations in Vietnam. The paper comprehensively examines the impact of market structure on various aspects of bank performance in Vietnam. The study uses three measures of the structure of the banking industry, namely, the total market share of the largest banks, the squared market share of all banks according to the Herfindahl-Hirshchman index, and the Lerner index on market power (inverse bank competition), to ensure the results are not dependent on any specific measure. The paper applies the two-step system generalized method of moments estimator to conduct regression analysis for a sample of 30 banks from 2007 to 2021. All obtained estimates generally show positive effects on bank performance due to greater market power and higher banking concentration. Concretely, more market power and greater concentration improve bank asset quality, management efficiency, bank profitability, and lending capacity. Overall, the findings of this paper all support the bright side of less competition and more concentration, which is essential to derive policy implications related to supervising competitive environments and stimulating consolidated financial systems. This study evaluates how the board composition and asset quality of Nigerian deposit money banks affected their financial performance. The study used a sample size of 20 out of 33 deposit money banks and an ex-post facto research design. Panel least square regression techniques were then used to assess the secondary data gathered from the audited financial records of the participating deposit financial institutions for the years 2014 to 2021. The study found that while asset quality has a negative impact on the performance of Nigerian banks, the size of the board and the makeup of the credit committee have a beneficial impact. As a result, the study came to the conclusion that board qualities and asset quality are two further elements that affect deposit money bank performance in Nigeria. In order to ensure that its members are appropriately diverse and in compliance with the Corporate Governance Code, the study proposed that the size of deposit money institutions' boards be rationalized. In order to guarantee that banks are not exposed to excessive risk, it was also advised that the Central Bank of Nigeria should keep an eye on the operations of the credit committee.

The Indian economy's growth depends heavily on the banking sector. In recent years, the banking business has undergone numerous changes. The RBI launched small finance banks as a banking initiative to encourage financial inclusion in India. Small finance banks offer services to financially excluded populations like farmers, labourers' low-income people, etc. This study is related to the period of six years from 2016-17 to 2021-22. The study uses descriptive statistics and the CAMEL model for the evaluation of financial performance. Descriptive statistics are analysed with the help of standard deviation and ANOVA. The CAMEL model analysis assists in determining how efficiently banks have performed in terms of each of the significant ratios including: (i) Capital Adequacy, (ii) Assets Quality, (iii) Management Effectiveness, (iv) Earning Quality, and (v) Liquidity Ratios. In recent years, there has been an increase in the quantity of marsh ecological asset (MEA) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau due to climatic warming and humidification. However, the alterations in the quality of the MEA in this region remain unclear. Here, we constructed a marsh quality index (MQI) based on the structural (including marsh fractal dimension, FD; and river network density, RN) and functional (including river runoff, Rr; and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI) indices of marshes to assess the change in the quality of MEA between 1980 and 2020 in the pastoral areas of Zoige County. We also examined changes in MEA quantity. And the relationships between the MEA and environmental variables were tested using grey relational analysis. We found that the quantity of MEA experienced an increase of 564.41 km2 from 1980 to 2020 in the pastoral areas of Zoige County. This rise was mainly due to the conversion of grassland into marsh. The MQI results demonstrated that there was a steady improvement in the quality of MEA, which was mainly attributed to the increase in RN, Rr, and NDVI. While the quantity and quality of MEA showed a strong association with climatic factors, their correlation with livestock numbers was found to be weak. These findings suggest that changes in MEA are strongly controlled by climate change and thus nature-based approaches should be highlighted for the conservation and management of MEA in plateau regions. We make a comparison of microfinance banks (MBs) and commercial banks (CBs) in terms of efficiency, business orientation, stability, and asset quality by analyzing a large sample of banks from 60 countries around the world. Our findings indicate that microfinance banks have higher intermediation, non-interest income, wholesale funding and liquidity, but lower efficiency and asset quality. These significant variations are influenced by smaller microfinance banks and are driven mostly to African and Latin American microfinance banks.

Risks inherent in banking businesses should be managed to prevent financial losses to the sector’s stakeholders and negative externalities to the global economy. To this end, this study examines the effect of risk management on the performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. A sample of eight (8) deposit money banks with international authorization are purposively selected out of 12 deposit money banks due to data availability. Panel data analysis techniques were adopted to analyze the secondary data that were obtained from the annual reports of banks. Findings based on the disaggregated model results reveal that both liquidity and capital risk variables exert a negative but insignificant effect on performance. However, credit risk drives performance of the internationally authorized banks positively and significantly. Furthermore, Management quality (MQ) is the only control variable that has a significant influence on the performance of the selected deposit money banks. The study concludes that credit risk and management quality significantly and positively drive performance among the financial entities.

The decline in asset quality stimulates the interest to investigate the effect of firm-specific characteristics and asset quality of Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria. Hence, this study examined the asset quality of these banks from firm-specific characteristics and market risks dimension. Secondary data was adopted for this study and the data for the firm-specific characteristics was extracted from the audited financial statements of the sixteen selected quoted DMBs in Nigeria as at December 2018. The data for the market risk variables was extracted from the Central Bank of Nigeria website and the World Development Index. Static panel regression was employed as the estimation technique. Results showed that diversification, capital adequacy, profitability and leverage are the bank-specific factors that determine asset quality. Inflation and financial crisis are the market risks variables that have a significant effect on DMBs’ asset quality. Based on these findings, the study concluded that diversification, profitability, capital adequacy, leverage, inflation and financial crisis are the major drivers of bank’s asset quality in Nigeria. In line with the findings, the study recommended that banks should strive to maintain the prudential threshold for capital adequacy as this will help them absorb shocks and withstand losses that may arise in the reasonable cause of doing business. Insurance, which is one of the main avenues of economic diversification, is also important financial and protection mechanism. In order to maintain the activity of insurance organizations and protect them from possible risks, regular financial analysis should be conducted, measures should be taken to make sound financial decisions and protect financial stability. Especially in the new market economy countries, where the “insurance culture” has been not fully formed, financial analysis of insurance organizations can make an important contribution both to strengthening the stability of the country’s financial system and to increasing the confidence of the population in the activities of insurance organizations. In this regard, the theoretical part of the article examines the historical development and modern state of the insurance market in Azerbaijan as a new open market economy country, as well as important state regulations related to financial stability. In the study, the financial analysis of insurance organizations has been conducted on the basis of the specifics of financial analysis in insurance organizations and the recommended financial ratios. The interpretation of the results and the opportunities to improve the financial indicators of the companies have been emphasized.

Corporate strategies today are shaped by the increased importance given by companies, investors, and regulators to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) activities. This paper empirically investigated the impact of ESG on the performance of banks in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region by collecting and analyzing the data of 29 banks located in the six GCC countries — namely the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. It studies data for the period 2010–2022 collected from the Refinitiv Eikon platform. Applying the ordinary least squares (OLS) and panel regression (fixed and random effect) techniques, it examines the impact of ESG on the performance of these banks. The significant Hausman test favored using the fixed effect results. The results suggest that a bank‘s size positively influences its performance. The larger the bank the more diverse its ESG activities and the better its performance. Additionally, ESG and asset quality have a significant negative correlation to performance, implying a lower asset quality indicates higher loan loss provision and leads to lower financial performance. Banks are financial intermediaries who transform deposits into loans. Banks in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region use large deposits from oil companies and big businesses to finance trade, and fund government and private sector infrastructure projects. The role of banks in financing trade and development is significant as undeveloped capital markets are unable to perform this function. During the COVID-19 crisis, banks sustained liquidity shocks, as deposits were withdrawn to meet personal and business needs. Essentially, banks could not make loans, as the funds to make loans were depleted. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of liquidity creation as a main force, in conjunction with other performance predictors such as efficient asset management, asset quality, and bank size, on bank financial performance, either individually or in conjunction with liquidity creation during the COVID-19 financial crisis. We used bank financial data from a sample of 298 banks from 11 countries in the MENA region, including Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Israel, from 2020 to2021. Liquidity creation, efficient asset management, asset quality, and bank size increased bank return on assets and return on equity. Bank size and asset quality acted jointly with liquidity creation to increase return on assets and increase return on equity. We conclude that as liquidity creation acts individually, and in conjunction with asset quality and bank size to increase bank profits, both its main effect and its moderated effect, can maintain bank profitability, during periods of extreme liquidity supply shocks, such as the COVID-19 crisis. Based on a sample of 63 listed European banks, this paper investigates the relationship of capital and asset quality, in terms of provisioning and coverage policies, with bank risk and performance during the period 2005Q1-2018Q4. Our results point out different relationships between risk-based and non-risk-based measures of capital with bank risk and performance profiles. In particular, the information content of the leverage ratio appears to be merely related to the bank dimensional feature, whereas the total capital ratio shows a positive and statistically significant relationship with bank stability and is also negatively related to insolvency risk, thereby suggesting a crucial role for capital for the overall bank resilience. In addition, more capitalized banks are associated with higher bank performance. Regarding asset quality, hefty coverage and provisioning policies are generally associated with both lower bank resilience and performance. These results are relevant for disentangling the implications that the regulatory overhaul set out to address the NPLs issue is having on banking activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The need for performance analysis and business continuity assessment is becoming increasingly important. Not the last role is played by the worsening economic situation and the economic crisis that is developing against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic that has swept the world. At the present stage of economic development, in connection with the acute problem of the financial instability of individual economic entities, it becomes necessary to accurately predict the insolvency and the likelihood of the risk of bankruptcy of the organization in terms of carrying out procedures aimed at determining the continuity of activities. The work is of an overview nature. The work used such economic methods of cognition as methods of selection and analysis of scientific information, a systematic approach, a method of comparison, and formal logic. The methods of selection and analysis of scientific information were used in the analysis of literature. The works of domestic and foreign scientists were supplemented by regulatory and legislative acts in the financial field. Sustainability analysis is based on the concept of business continuity. Continuity can be analyzed using different models and indicators, but all types of economic performance evaluation involve studying the company’s balance sheet. The application of the continuity mechanism reflects the real situation of the company’s stability and allows you to see problems in advance and avoid bankruptcy. The results of this study may be of interest both to supervisory and regulatory authorities, and investors, and internal services that control the financial stability of insurance companies.
