Background: The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2021) introduced "The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education" (Essentials) in 2021. The AACN document necessitated a change in nursing curriculums, both undergraduate and graduate. To meet the revised standards, one college of nursing within a hierarchical organization used a Three-Step Model of Planned Change to guide curricular revisions. This article presents the lessons learned from using the Three-Step Model of Planned Change, which includes barriers, strategies, and a toolkit for implementing planned change., Step One-Desire a Change: Lessons learned include embracing the unifying values of the guiding coalition to understand the motivation(s) and urgency for change. Suggested strategies include creating a cross-sectional organizational team, utilizing collaborative approaches that value members' time, and various communication methods., Step Two-Make the Change: Lessons learned include understanding the larger hierarchical structure's process requirements and time allotment for approval. Suggested strategies include establishing a repository hub for templates and shared documents, implementing various communication channels, and repurposing standing meeting times., Step Three-Live the Change: As this process is just beginning, anticipated lessons include an understanding of changes occurring circuitously within and between steps. Background: Little is known about the status of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and inter-sex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) health content in prelicensure nursing curricula. This study explored curricular and pedagogical practices of LGBTQIA+ health content in nursing curricula in the United States., Design: A quantitative, cross-sectional comparative descriptive design was implemented., Method: Stratified random sampling was used to email a survey to deans and administrators of prelicensure associate degree in nursing (ADN) and baccalaureate nursing (BSN) programs., Results: Private ADN programs included more LGBTQIA+ health content than BSN programs and more LGBTQIA+ health content than public ADN programs in nursing curricula., Conclusion: Although progress has been made to include LGBTQIA+ health content in nursing curricula in the U.S., creative educational strategies can be used to help meet the varying needs of different programs. African American women experience a disparity of preventable long-term illness than non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Asian, and Hispanic women. Participation in routine physical activity (PA) is recommended to prevent and manage long-term illness, yet African American women are the least physically active. There is a paucity of literature addressing long-term PA in this population; therefore, a scoping review of the literature was conducted to assess what is known about physically active African American women who successfully participate in regular forms of long-term PA. The Socioecological Model was used to organize a synthesis of factors influencing PA at the individual, social, environmental, and political levels. A search of 7 electronic databases and reference lists produced 7 studies published in English between 2000 and 2022. Participants shared perspectives of influences at multiple levels. At the individual level, modeling PA behaviors was noted as a means for changing the cultural perspective of PA; future interventions that engage physically active African American women as advocates and promoters of PA may be useful. Social level influences were the most impactful and served as a channel for belonging and attachment while performing PA; culturally appropriate interventions may include supporting a sense of belonging. At the environmental level, financial constraints and unsafe environments for subgroups influenced the ability to perform PA; future research might consider interventions based on demographics and their impact on participants' ability to perform PA. No influences were mentioned by participants at the political level.

Background: The purpose of our web-based, semi-virtual reality simulation was to raise baccalaureate nursing students' awareness of civility and incivility. Educators know civility in nursing is crucial to safe and effective patient care. However, nursing students have reported physiological and psychological distress after experiencing incivility. If nurse educators are unable to better promote civility, the quality of nursing education, and ultimately nursing practice, is threatened., Method: We implemented an innovative civility-related, semi-virtual reality, simulation with senior-level nursing students. After attending a faculty-led discussion on the importance of civility and incivility, students participated in a web-based, semi-virtual reality simulation, followed by a synchronous debriefing session., Results: Students reported that the intervention raised their awareness of civility and incivility., Conclusion: This article describes the intervention and shares the lessons learned in implementing it so nurse educators may replicate this innovative strategy to raise awareness of civility in nursing education. Background: Incivility is a low-intensity, discourteous behavior intended to disrupt or harm positive interaction. If allowed, student-to-student incivility can undermine the educational environment., Purpose: The purpose of the integrative review was to examine factors influencing incivility among nursing students and teaching strategies used to reduce incivility in nursing education., Methods: Qualitative and quantitative studies were reviewed. The Johns Hopkins Research Evidence Appraisal tool was used to narrow down the selection of articles. Content analysis was used to evaluate the qualitative research., Results: Five major points of interest were identified: workload and high expectations contributed to incivility, degrees of incivility, effects of incivility, coping mechanisms among individuals, and effective teaching strategies addressing incivility., Conclusion: Continued research on innovative teaching strategies that raise awareness of civility while reducing incivility is warranted.

Background: Distress is regarded as the sixth vital sign in cancer care, but few studies describe distress in patients undergoing radiation therapy., Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess distress levels among patients with breast or prostate cancer undergoing radiation therapy and investigate which problems contribute to patients' distress levels., Methods: A retrospective medical record review was conducted for 217 patients with breast or prostate cancer at a midwestern community cancer center. Demographic data, distress scores, and problems or concerns from the patient-completed Distress Thermometer and associated Problem List were collected. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were calculated., Findings: The average distress of patients with breast cancer was significantly higher than that of patients with prostate cancer, and patients with breast cancer reported more problems than those with prostate cancer.

Background: Sarcopenic obesity, the dual condition of decreased muscle mass with increased fat mass, can affect morbidity, mortality, and quality of life in adult cancer survivors., Objectives: The purpose of this project was to determine the effects of the use of an educational toolbox on advanced practice nurses' (APNs') confidence in identifying and managing adult cancer survivors at risk for sarcopenic obesity., Methods: APNs in an outpatient practice who care for adult cancer survivors received an educational toolbox with strategies to identify and manage adult cancer survivors at risk for sarcopenic obesity., Findings: APNs reported being more confident in their ability to identify adult patients with cancer at risk for sarcopenic obesity and in their ability to manage these patients compared to prior to the intervention. Educational resources provided an effective tool for identifying and managing patients at risk for sarcopenic obesity.

Background: Although an atmosphere of civility in which nurses respect and value each other is crucial to health care, incivility continues to be widespread., Method: New graduate nurses completed an online questionnaire in which they described incivility and discussed its impact on new nurses and patients., Results: Findings were categorized according to the impact of incivility on new nurses and patients. Embedded in these categories are rich descriptions of incivility in health care., Conclusions: The participants witnessed uncivil interactions that negatively impacted them emotionally, professionally, and physically. They also discussed the harmful effects of incivility on patients, whose care may be impeded or their faith in caregivers eroded in hostile, uncivil care environments. Nurses in professional development play a crucial role in promoting a culture of civility through raising awareness, supporting nurses new to the profession, and helping health care workers to better cope with incivility., (Copyright 2015, SLACK Incorporated.)

Objective: Design and evaluation of the dietary intake monitoring application (DIMA) to assist varying-literacy patients receiving hemodialysis to adhere to their prescribed dietary regimen., Methods: An iterative, user-centered design process informed by Bandura's social cognitive theory was employed to design DIMA--a mobile application that utilizes touch-screen, visual interfaces; barcode scanning; and voice recording to assist varying-literacy patients receiving hemodialysis to self-monitor their diet. A pilot field study was conducted where 18 patients receiving hemodialysis were recruited face-to-face from two dialysis facilities to use DIMA for 6 weeks. Subjects recorded their dietary intake using DIMA and met with research assistants three times each week. All interactions with DIMA were logged. Subjects' interdialytic weight gain was recorded throughout the study. At the end of the study, two face-to-face questionnaires were administered to assess usability and context of use., Results: Subjects were able to use DIMA successfully--12 subjects used DIMA as much or more at the end of the study as they did at the beginning and reported that DIMA helped them change their diet. Subjects had difficulty using the barcode scanner. Viewing past meals was the most used of the reflection mechanisms in DIMA., Conclusion: Results suggest that while many design features were useful, some could be improved. In particular, future versions of DIMA will be on a smartphone using a camera for barcode scanning, integrate feedback and past meal reflection into the normal flow of the application, and support visual cues when selecting food items.
