Managing Volunteer Engagement Non-profit organizations that provide food, shelter, and other services to people in need, rely on volunteers to deliver their services. Unlike paid labor, non-profit organizations have less control over unpaid volunteers' schedules, efforts, and reliability. However, these organizations can invest in volunteer engagement activities to strive for a steady and adequate supply of volunteer labor. The paper, "A Dynamic Model for Managing Volunteer Engagement", models the volunteer management process. The paper derives a dynamic control policy that judiciously uses the non-profit's resources for volunteer engagement activities depending on explicit congestion thresholds, thereby lowering the overall cost of the non-profit operation. We study a key operational question of how a nonprofit organization can manage its volunteer workforce capacity to ensure consistent provision of services. In particular, we formulate a multiclass queueing network model to characterize the optimal engagement activities for the nonprofit organization to minimize the costs of enhancing volunteer engagement, while maximizing productive work done by volunteers. Because this problem appears intractable, we formulate an approximating Brownian control problem in the heavy traffic limit and study the dynamic control of that system. Our solution is a nested threshold policy with explicit congestion thresholds that indicate when the nonprofit should optimally pursue various types of volunteer engagement activities. A numerical example calibrated using data from a large food bank shows that our dynamic policy for deploying engagement activities can significantly reduce the food bank's total annual cost of its volunteer operations while still maintaining almost the same level of social impact. This improvement in performance does not require any additional resources—it only requires that the food bank strategically deploy its engagement activities based on the number of volunteers signed up to work volunteer shifts. The fluctuations in food prices have highlighted the significance of analysing the factors influencing household food consumption. Recent advancements in data analysis have opened new avenues for investigating this subject. While studies have employed novel data analysis methods to examine the factors impacting household food consumption, the effect of the chosen analysis method on the research outcome remains unexplored. In this study, we aimed to investigate household food consumption in Turkey between 2012-2019 using various data analysis techniques (Linear Regression, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, eXtreme Gradient Boosting, and Multi-Layer Perception). Our findings reveal that income emerged as the most influential factor in household food consumption across all methods. However, the impact of other factors varied depending on the method employed. This suggests that the method chosen to analyse factors other than income in studies of this nature can significantly impact the results. STUDY QUESTION What are the clinical pregnancy and live birth rates in women who underwent up to two more euploid blastocyst transfers after three failures in the absence of another known factor that affects implantation? SUMMARY ANSWER The fourth and fifth euploid blastocyst transfers resulted in similar live birth rates of 40% and 53.3%, respectively, culminating in a cumulative live birth rate of 98.1% (95% CI = 96.5–99.6%) after five euploid blastocyst transfers. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY The first three euploid blastocysts have similar implantation and live birth rates and provide a cumulative live birth rate of 92.6%. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION An international multi-center retrospective study was conducted at 25 individual clinics. The study period spanned between January 2012 and December 2022. A total of 123 987 patients with a total of 64 572 euploid blastocyst transfers were screened for inclusion. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Patients with a history of any embryo transfer at another clinic, history of any unscreened embryo transfer at participating clinics, parental karyotype abnormalities, the use of donor oocytes or a gestational carrier, untreated intracavitary uterine pathology (e.g. polyp, leiomyoma), congenital uterine anomalies, adenomyosis, communicating hydrosalpinx, endometrial thickness <6 mm prior to initiating of progesterone, use of testicular sperm due to non-obstructive azoospermia in the male partner, transfer of an embryo with a reported intermediate chromosome copy number (i.e. mosaic), preimplantation genetic testing cycles for monogenic disorders, or structural chromosome rearrangements were excluded. Ovarian stimulation protocols and embryology laboratory procedures including trophectoderm biopsy followed the usual practice of each center. The ploidy status of blastocysts was determined with comprehensive chromosome screening. Endometrial preparation protocols followed the usual practice of participating centers and included programmed cycles, natural or modified natural cycles. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE A total of 105 (0.085% of the total population) patients met the criteria and underwent at least one additional euploid blastocyst transfer after failing to achieve a positive pregnancy test with three consecutive euploid blastocyst transfers. Outcomes of the fourth and fifth euploid blastocyst transfers were similar across participating centers. Overall, the live birth rate was similar with the fourth and fifth euploid blastocysts (40% vs 53.3%, relative risk = 1.33, 95% CI = 0.93–1.9, P value = 0.14). Sensitivity analyses excluding blastocysts biopsied on Day 7 postfertilization, women with a BMI >30 kg/m2, cycles using non-ejaculate or donor sperm, double-embryo transfer cycles, and cycles in which the day of embryo transfer was modified due to endometrial receptivity assay test result yielded similar results. Where data were available, the fourth euploid blastocyst had similar live birth rate with the first one (relative risk = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.58–1.21, P  = 0.29). The cumulative live birth rate after five euploid blastocyst transfers was 98.1% (95% CI = 96.5–99.6%). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Retrospective design has its own inherent limitations. Patients continuing with a further euploid embryo transfer and patients dropping out from treatment after three failed euploid transfers can be systematically different, perhaps with regard to ovarian reserve or economic status. WIDER IMPLICATION OF THE FINDINGS Implantation failure seems to be mainly due to embryonic factors. Given the stable and high live birth rates up to five euploid blastocysts, unexplained recurrent implantation failure should have a prevalence of <2%. Latent Agents in Networks: Estimation and Targeting In "Latent Agents in Networks: Estimation and Targeting," Baris Ata, Alexandre Belloni, and Ozan Candogan address the problem of estimating network effects in a setting in which data only on a subset of agents is available. In this setting, the observable agents influence each other's outcomes both directly and indirectly through their influence on the latent agents. Even in sparse networks, the combination of direct and indirect network effects yields a nonsparse influence structure that makes estimation challenging. The authors overcome this challenge and provide an estimation algorithm that performs well in high-dimensional settings. They also establish convergence rates for their proposed estimator and show that their performance guarantees are valid for a large class of networks. Finally, the authors demonstrate the application of their algorithm to a targeted advertising problem, in which it can be used to obtain asymptotically optimal advertising decisions despite the presence of latent agents. We consider a platform that serves (observable) agents, who belong to a larger network that also includes additional agents who are not served by the platform. We refer to the latter group of agents as latent agents. Associated with each agent are the agent's covariate and outcome. The platform has access to past covariates and outcomes of the observable agents, but no data for the latent agents is available to the platform. Crucially, the agents influence each other's outcome through a certain influence structure. In particular, observable agents influence each other both directly and indirectly through the influence they exert on the latent agents. The platform doesn't know the inference structure of either the observable or the latent parts of the network. We investigate how the platform can estimate the dependence of the observable agents' outcomes on their covariates, taking the presence of the latent agents into account. First, we show that a certain matrix succinctly captures the relationship between the outcomes and the covariates. We provide an algorithm that estimates this matrix using historical data of covariates and outcomes for the observable agents under a suitable approximate sparsity condition. We also establish convergence rates for the proposed estimator despite the high dimensionality that allows more agents than observations. Second, we show that the approximate sparsity condition holds under the standard conditions used in the literature. Hence, our results apply to a large class of networks. Finally, we illustrate the applications to a targeted advertising problem. We show that, by using the available historical data with our estimator, it is possible to obtain asymptotically optimal advertising decisions despite the presence of latent agents. Funding: O.
