1. Structural transitions of monoolein bicontinuous cubic phase induced by inclusion of protein lysozyme solutions

Abstract

Inclusion of protein lysozyme molecules in lipidic monoolein cubic phase induces a transition from a $\rm Pn\bar{3}m$ structure to $\rm Im\bar{3}m$ one. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) method with high intensity synchrotron radiation enabled us to follow closely the transition depending on the conditions of lysozyme solutions. We showed that concentrated lysozyme solutions induced the appearance of the $\rm Im\bar{3}m$ structure coexisting with the $\rm Pn\bar{3}m$ structure. From the relation between the lattice parameters of these two structures it was shown that they were related by the Bonnet transformation of underlying triply periodic minimal surfaces. We found that the transition also occurred at lower lysozyme concentration when NaCl induced attraction between lysozyme molecules. The origin of the transition was considered as a frustration in the cubic phase where lysozyme molecules were highly confined. A simple estimation of the frustration was given, which took into account of the translational entropy of lysozyme molecules. At the highest concentration of lysozyme and NaCl the $\rm Im\bar{3}m$ structure was found to disappear and left only the $\rm Pn\bar{3}m$ structure. This was probably either due to the crystallization or phase separation of lysozyme solutions ongoing microscopically, which absorbed lysozyme molecules from channels of the cubic phase and thus removed the frustration., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Litter decomposition is a key process for carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems and is mainly controlled by environmental conditions, substrate quantity and quality as well as microbial community abundance and composition. In particular, the effects of climate and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on litter decomposition and its temporal dynamics are of significant importance, since their effects might change over the course of the decomposition process. Within the TeaComposition initiative, we incubated Green and Rooibos teas at 524 sites across nine biomes. We assessed how macroclimate and atmospheric inorganic N deposition under current and predicted scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 8.5) might affect litter mass loss measured after 3 and 12 months. Our study shows that the early to mid-term mass loss at the global scale was affected predominantly by litter quality (explaining 73% and 62% of the total variance after 3 and 12 months, respectively) followed by climate and N deposition. The effects of climate were not litter-specific and became increasingly significant as decomposition progressed, with MAP explaining 2% and MAT 4% of the variation after 12 months of incubation. The effect of N deposition was litter-specific, and significant only for 12-month decomposition of Rooibos tea at the global scale. However, in the temperate biome where atmospheric N deposition rates are relatively high, the 12-month mass loss of Green and Rooibos teas decreased significantly with increasing N deposition, explaining 9.5% and 1.1% of the variance, respectively. The expected changes in macroclimate and N deposition at the global scale by the end of this century are estimated to increase the 12-month mass loss of easily decomposable litter by 1.1-3.5% and of the more stable substrates by 3.8-10.6%, relative to current mass loss. Abstract

The numerical analysis model of temperature in a roll and a rolled material was first derived by solving the equations of heat conduction. Next, the occurrence limits of heatstreaks for reduction in thickness and interface temperature in a roll bite were evaluated experimentally and numerically in cold rolling experiments of stainless steel (SUS430) with two kinds of lubricants. Also, the thermal stability of two lubricants was measured by thermal balance experiments. Consequently, the limit of interface temperature due to heatstreaks calculated numerically is almost constant in a lubricant, which suggests that an outbreak of heatstreaks is mostly dependent on the thermal stability of lubricant. Also, larger quantity of synthetic ester is considered to give higher heatstreak resistance in cold rolling of stainless steel.

Abstract

We are developing a tungsten transition edge sensor (W-TES) for x-ray imaging spectroscopy applications. The conventional readout scheme for TES array has a great difficulty in reading out multi-channel x-ray signals. Therefore we have considered a new readout scheme for a W-TES array. This scheme is based on a cooling time measurement in a saturation mode. In this scheme, we only need time information, therefore we can expect to simplify a readout system. Although the currently achieved energy resolution of our W-TES (0.5mm x 0.5mm) using the cooling time measurement is 55eV (FWHM) at 5.9keV, much higher energy resolution is expected by making smaller devices.
