Underground mines are considered one of the riskiest facilities for human activities due to numerous accidents and geotechnical failures recorded worldwide over the last century, which have resulted in unsafe labor conditions, poor health outcomes, injuries, and fatalities. One significant cause of these accidents is the inadequate or nonexistent capacity for the real-time monitoring of safety conditions in underground mines. In this context, new emerging technologies linked to the Industry 4.0 paradigm, such as sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), and LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) wireless connectivity, are being implemented for planning the efficient, safe, and sustainable performance of underground mine labor environments. This paper studies the implementation of an ecosystem composed of IoT sensors and LoRa wireless connectivity in a data-acquisition system, which eliminates the need for expensive cabling and manual monitoring in mining operations. Laying cables in an underground mine necessitates cable support and protection against issues, such as machinery operations, vehicle movements, mine operator activities, and groundwater intrusion. As the underground mine expands, additional sensors typically require costly cable installations unless wireless connectivity is employed. The results of this review indicate that an IoT LoRaWAN-based wireless sensor network (WSN) provides real-time data under complex conditions, effectively transmitting data through physical barriers. This network presents an attractive low-cost solution with reliable, simple, scalable, secure, and competitive characteristics compared to cable installations and manually collected readings, which are more sporadic and prone to human error. Reliable data on the behavior of the underground mine enhances productivity by improving key performance indicators (KPIs), minimizing accident risks, and promoting sustainable environmental conditions for mine operators. Finally, the adoption of IoT sensors and LoRaWAN wireless connectivity technologies provides information of the underground mine in real-time, which supports better decisions by the mining industry managers, by ensuring compliance with safety regulations, improving the productive performance, and fostering a roadmap towards more environmentally friendly labor conditions. The rapid evolution of digital technologies has revolutionized the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, driving the wide-spread adoption of digital twins for structures. These virtual replicas, developed using Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology, incorporate extensive information databases, proving indispensable for enhancing project management throughout a structure's entire lifecycle and towards smart city development. As the impact of climate change continues to grow, hazardous weather alerts play a critical role as an early-warning system that notifies stakeholders of imminent threats, thereby influencing decision-making processes in construction projects. Surprisingly, despite its evident value, the integration of alert systems for hazardous weather conditions into BIM is often overlooked. To fill this gap, this paper proposes Robot Process Automation (RPA) protocols to automate the integration of real-time weather parameters into a structure's BIM models. These very protocols are also used as alert systems, enabling the timely notification of stakeholders in the event of detected hazardous weather conditions. Current railway infrastructure maintenance work, which is mostly carried out by visual inspection, has a reactive approach, dissociated information, and limited follow-up. On the other hand, railway bridges, being critical infrastructures, require effective monitoring and maintenance to guarantee their safety and operation over time. The designed tool links a parametric BIM model in Revit® with an automated spreadsheet in MS Excel® through visual programming in Dynamo, generating BIM/data automation as an initial step towards a digital twin. This achieves a bidirectional flow to exchange data on the structural condition of elements. The procedure was applied to a railway bridge in use for over 100 years, representing its geometry and damage information according to technical standards. The value lies in laying the foundations for adopting preventive approaches for this key infrastructure. The BIM/data automation allows the BIM model to visually reflect the condition of the elements, depending on their damage, consolidate the inspection information, and generate a visual management tool. In conclusion, the designed BIM/data automation improves the monitoring of railway bridges compared to traditional methods, facilitating the interaction and relationship between the damage records and the actual bridge elements, laying the foundations for the construction of digital twins. South America is a region that stands out worldwide for its biodiversity of ecosystems, cultural heritage, and potential considering natural resources linked to renewable energies. In the global crisis due to climate change, South American countries have implemented actions to carry out a progressive energy transition from fossil energies to renewable energies and contribute to the planet's sustainability. In this context, South American countries are implementing green strategies and investment projects linked to wind farms to move towards achieving the sustainable development goals for the year 2030 of the UN agenda and achieving low-carbon economies for the year 2050. This article studies the advances in wind energy implementation in South America, highlighting progress and experiences in these issues through a review of the scientific literature considering the year 2023. The methodology applied in this article was carried out through the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and the generation of scientific maps. As a result, this article presents the main developments, lessons learned/gaps, and future sustainable prospects on the road to 2050. According to the results, renewable wind energy infrastructure was applied in South America during the global climate change crisis era. Different levels of development in on-shore wind farms have been reached in each country. Also, a promising future exists for off-shore wind energy considering the highest potential. Finally, this article concludes that implementing emerging technologies like the production of green hydrogen and synthetic e-fuels looks like a synergetic clean energy solution combined with wind energy, which may transform the region into a world-class sustainable territory. Communities and authorities have been dismayed by globally recorded tailings storage facility (TSF) failures in recent years, which have negatively affected the safety of people and the integrity of the environment. In this context, obtaining the social and environmental license to operate TSFs has become a challenging process for mining companies. This has promoted the trend of using mine tailings dewatering technologies in the mining industry, with dry stacking of filtered mine tailings being recognized worldwide as one of the most acceptable, safe, and environmentally friendly solutions. This article presents a new paradigm in managing mine tailings, with disruptive and futuristic characteristics, considering the dry stacking of filtered mine tailings for large-scale industrial production rates over 100,000 metric tons per day (mtpd). Aspects of filtered tailings management are discussed, such as (i) dewatering process plant with thickening/filtering equipment, (ii) conveyance using fixed and movable conveyor belts, (iii) construction of dry stacking of filtered mine tailings facility, and (iv) implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies for automation of the mining processes. Finally, the article discusses how the large-scale filtered mine tailings solution is applied, considering the advances in the equipment's performance and implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies as well as the experience gained worldwide in several mining operations. The future global trend is that mining operations with high daily production of mine tailings will apply dry stacking technology without dams to guarantee sustainability, promote continuity of the mining business, ensure the safety of communities, and conserve the environment. There is a lack of knowledge of the interactions required over time among the members of a building project design team. Without a specific target, it is impossible to identify gaps to propose improvement plans in the coordination and management of projects in the early stages. Therefore, this study proposes a model of the required interaction among the members of a building project design team during the different phases of the design process. The research was divided into three stages: (1) design team interactions; (2) construction of ideal interaction networks and proposed evaluation model; and (3) pilot cases—evaluation and analysis. Through this study, eight ideal networks were constructed, four for each interaction (information flow, collaboration, and coordination) and one for each design phase. In addition, a series of metrics were proposed to evaluate the current state of a building project, which, together with the constructed model networks, allowed the development of an evaluation method for real projects. Heritage façades are relevant to the historical preservation and identity of a city. Their deterioration can cause the devaluation of the urban environment, together with accidents caused by possible detachment of their different elements; therefore, maintaining them is crucial. It is important to have early warning systems in place, systems which would indicate potential damage and deterioration of such façades, which can be caused by factors such as humidity, earthquakes, the passage of time, or even people. This is often done through visual inspection; however, visual inspection is often affected by external factors, such as the financing of the on-site inspection and the availability of experts. Unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAVs) are a practical and economical tool that has facilitated and improved imaging by regulating parameters such as camera angle, capture distance and image overlap, thus allowing improvements in photogrammetry techniques for virtual reconstruction processes. Although the implementation of this technology has been studied in recent years, research has focused primarily on horizontal structures, such as roads. In the case of vertical structures, flight parameters are traditionally defined by trial and error, without any methodological procedure. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology to calibrate UAV flight parameters to build a photogrammetric 3D model of a vertical structure. This proposal is based on the development of a series of experiments configured through Taguchi orthogonal arrays, which is a method that significantly reduces the number of experiments required. This methodology is applied to a case study of a façade with architectural heritage features. The results obtained offer a flight plan and the optimal parameters to achieve efficiency in the capture of images in an inspection of heritage façades, thus achieving the optimisation of resources and time.
