Cadmium (Cd) contamination is considered as a widespread concern at global scale which is serious threats to human health. Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly approach which can remove or immobilize Cd from the soil. Different organic and inorganic amendments can potentially enhance Cd phytoremediation efficiency but the comparison of farmyard manure (FM), elemental sulphur (S) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for Cd phytoremediation through spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum L.) remained unanswered. The present study evaluated the efficiency of S (0.1 and 0.2%), EDTA (0.1 and 0.2%, represented as EDTA-0.1 and EDTA-0.2) and FM (0.5 and 1%, represented as FM-0.5 and FM-1) for remediation of Cd contaminated soils (50 and 100 mg kg-1, represented as Cd-50 and Cd-100) through spider plants. Results depicted that the highest shoots and roots dry biomass was found in FM treated plants followed by S, EDTA and control except in EDTA-0.2 treatment in which the lowest values of these parameters were observed. Application of FM-1 significantly increased the shoot dry weight (120%), root dry weight (99%), as well as photosynthetic attributes in Cd-50 as compared to control. Application of EDTA-0.2 increased the bioavailable fraction of Cd than control and the maximum increase was observed in Cd-100. The highest Cd concentrations in shoot and roots were found in EDTA treated plants followed by S, control and FM irrespective of Cd and amendment levels. Maximum Cd in roots (109%) and shoots (156%) was recorded in plants grown in Cd-100 with EDTA-0.2 than control. The maximum bioaccumulation factor, translocation index, harvest index and root to shoot translocation were observed with EDTA than control and other treatments. EDTA along with spider plants may enhance the uptake of Cd but lower biomass production in the highest dose of EDTA may questioned the efficiency of EDTA.

Increasing temperature poses a serious threat to rice productivity. This study investigated the impact of various biochar treatments and phosphorous (P) fertilization on osmolyte accumulation, ROS development, and antioxidant activity in two rice cultivars (IR-64 and Huanghuazhan) under high-temperature stress. All plants of both cultivars were grown in a controlled environment under ambient temperatures (AT), high day temperatures (HDT) or high night temperatures (HNT). The different fertilization treatments were biochar alone, P alone and biochar + P with control. In the leaves and xylem sap of both rice cultivars, particularly in the susceptible cv. IR-64, high-temperature stress increased the production of MDA and H(2)O(2). HDT and HNT decreased total soluble sugars, protein, and proline levels in both rice cultivars. HNT was observed as more harmful compared to HDT during most of the studied characteristics. The response of antioxidant enzyme activities, viz, SOD, POD, CAT, APX, ASC, GSH, GR, and GSSC activities, to the temperature treatments varied between the two cultivars. Antioxidant activities decreased in the leaves and xylem sap of IR-64 but increased in those of Huanghuazhan upon exposure to high-temperature stress. Huanghuazhan exhibited better heat tolerance compared to IR-64, which was linked to its increased antioxidant enzyme activation and metabolite synthesis. As compared to the control, all soil fertilization treatments considerably reduced the adverse impacts of high temperature on the rice cultivars. The combination of biochar and P resulted in better performance compared to the other treatments in terms of all studied attributes.

Silicon (Si) is one of the best plant defense elements against the biotic and abiotic stresses. Camelina plants accumulate Si which serves in protection against drought stress. The present study was conducted to investigate the impact of different doses of foliage applied Si (0, 3, 6 and 9 mM) under water stress (40% field capacity, FC) and non-stress conditions (100% FC) on camelina genotypes (Canadian and Australian). The imposed drought drastically decreased the growth parameters like root-shoot length and plant fresh and dry weight and also had negative impact on the chlorophyll content along with water relation attributes (water potential, osmotic potential and turgor pressure). In contrast, total free amino acids, total soluble proteins, proline and antioxidants such as ascorbic peroxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) were enhanced especially in water stressed Canadian genotype, while osmoprotectants (flavonoids, anthocyanins and glycinebetaine) and phenolics contents were decreased. On the other hand, the foliar application of Si was instrumental in enhancing the growth of camelina by increasing the chlorophyll contents and water relation of stressed and non-stressed plants. Similarly, the biochemical, osmoprotectants and antioxidant metabolism was also improved in camelina stressed plants through the application of foliar Si. In conclusion, foliar application of 6 mM Si at vegetative growth stage played a vital role in alleviating the drastic impact of water stress on camelina growth by improving the water status, chlorophyll content, accumulation of phenolics and osmoprotectants and activating antioxidants. Therefore, the foliar application of Si could be developed as an important biologically viable strategy for boosting the tolerance in camelina plants to water stress conditions.

Improving the chemical and physical properties of saline soils is crucial for the sustainable production of sugar beet and efficient processing of beet sugar. Here, the impacts of the application of treated filter cake on sugar beet biofortification under saline soil and sugar losses into molasses during beet sugar processing were evaluated for the first time. The application of treated filter cake significantly reduced K%, Na% and α-amino-N while enhanced sucrose content and quality index of beet root juice. Consequently, sugar loss percentage, sugar loss yield and relative sugar loss yield were reduced, whereas recoverable sugar yield was enhanced. Linear regression analysis revealed that quality index and sugar loss yield were increased, whereas sugar loss percentage and relative sugar loss yield were reduced in response to the reduction of soil Na + content accompanied with increasing Ca 2+ content in the soil increased. The results provide treated filter cake as a promising amendment for saline soils remediation for improving biofortification of sugar beet and reducing sugar losses during beet sugar processing.

Contamination of soils with cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) has emerged as a serious environmental issue that reduces crop productivity. However, the metals tolerance and accumulation potential of quinoa (Chenopodium Quinoa Willd) under the combined stress of Cd and Pb has not yet been explored. In the present hydroponic study, the physiological and biochemical characteristics of quinoa exposed to Cd and Pb were explored. Four-week-old plants of quinoa genotype ‘Puno’ were grown under different concentrations of Cd (0, 50 and 100 µM), Pb (0, 250 and 500 µM) alone as well as in combinations. The results showed that with increasing Cd and Pb levels in the nutrient solution, the plant biomass, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll contents were decreased. However, the concurrent application of higher concentrations of Cd (100 µM) and Pb (500 µM) caused even more reduction in the plant biomass (more than 50% than the control) and physiological attributes. The combined application of Pb and Cd caused oxidative stress through an overproduction of H2O2 (10-fold) and TBARS (12.5-fold), leading to decrease in membrane stability (52%). The oxidative stress was alleviated by a 7-fold, 10-fold and 9-fold overactivation of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT), respectively. An excessive uptake of Cd resulted in a limited uptake of Pb and K in the roots and shoots of quinoa plants. The Cd and Pb tolerance and uptake potential of Puno showed its ability to stabilize Cd and Pb in co-contaminated soils.

Pot experiments were carried out to examine the biochar application and its alleviating effect on arsenic (As) toxicity in soybean plants. The data showed that As inhibits the growth indices and it increased with enhanced As-concentration in the substrate. The growth indices declined by more than 40% and the osmolyte concentration, photosynthetic pigments and antioxidant enzymes were decreased significantly among As-stressed plants. However, biochar application effectively mitigated the inhibitory effects of As on the soybean growth and the mitigation effect of treatment is more prevalent to the plants subjected to higher As-treatment. Biochar significantly reduced the As-uptake as revealed by the translocation factor (1), indicating more As is restrained in the roots. The reduction in the total chlorophyll and carotenoid content was found less in the As-treated soybean plants upon biochar application. Similarly, the osmolytes comprising proline, sugar and protein increased upon application of biochar. The biomarkers viz., membrane stability index (MSI), hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde (MDA) content significantly decreased at higher As-levels upon biochar application as was also supported by the heatmap analysis. Moreover, the antioxidative enzymes also showed a significant increase upon addition of biochar. Our data showed that biochar amendment effectively alleviates the As-stress by enhancing the sorption of As in the substrate thus, significantly declining the As concentration in plant leaves, and thus the results of the current study depicting the role of biochar as a promising, cost-effective and eco-friendly amendment to decontaminate the As-polluted soils.

The excessive concentration of Pb in soil accumulates in plants body and enters into food chain, resulting in health hazards in humans. The phytoremediation is eco-friendly and cost-efficient technique to clean up the polluted soils. However, to the best of our Knowledge, there are very few reports addressing the enhancement of the phytoremediation potential of castor bean plants. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the potential role of glutathione (GSH), as a promising plant growth regulator, in enhancing the lead stress tolerance and phytoremediation potential of castor bean plants grown under lead stress conditions. The results indicated that Pb stress reduced the growth, biomass, chlorophyll pigments and gas exchange attributes of castor bean plants, causing oxidative damage in plants. Pb stress induced the oxidative stress markers and activities of antioxidant enzymes. On the other hand, the application of GSH reduced oxidative stress markers, but enhanced the growth, biomass, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange attributes, Pb accumulation and antioxidant enzymes activities of lead-stressed castor bean plants. Both Pb uptake and Pb accumulation were increased by increasing concentrations of Pb in a dose-additive manner. However, at high dose of exogenous GSH (25 mg LThe excessive concentration of Lead (Pb) in soil accumulates in plants body and enters into food chain, resulting in health hazards in humans. Drought is a major abiotic stress that limits performance of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), which is an important aromatic plant for flavor foods and traditional medicines. The influence of palm pollen grains extract (PGE) on growth, physio-biochemical attributes, water use efficiency (WUE), anatomical characteristics and antioxidant defense system components in basil plants was investigated under normal and water deficit stress conditions. The PGE was exogenously applied as a foliar spray at a rate of 1.0 g L‒1 to plants under full (70% of soil water-holding capacity; SWHC) or deficit irrigation (DI; 50% of SWHC) in a pot experiment repeated three times. Exposing basil plants to drought stress significantly disorganized their performance including oil yield and anatomical features, but increased their antioxidant defense system components. However, the application of PGE to DI-stressed plants significantly improved growth characteristics and the contents of essential oil, leaf photosynthetic pigments, soluble sugars, free proline, and ascorbic acid. Antioxidant enzyme activities, relative water content (RWC), WUE, and anatomical characteristics were also improved, while electrolyte leakage was significantly diminished compared to the corresponding control. Therefore, results obtained in this study recommend using PGE at 1.0 g L‒1 as a foliar application strategy for Ocimum basilicum plants grown under DI stress to maintain higher RWC and WUE, and lower EL, and improve plant growth and essential oil productivity by limiting the inhibitory effects of DI.

Environmental variations resulting in biotic and abiotic stresses demand adaptive changes in the photosynthetic machinery. To cope with these challenges, plant scientists are constantly striving to enhance photosynthetic activity. The photorespiration pathway, which fixes O2 and releases CO2 in C3 plants, competes with photosynthesis. One method to increase yield would be to enhance photosynthesis by engineering the photorespiratory pathway. To date, three engineered photorespiratory pathways have been produced, of which two have been proven experimentally in the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. These approaches might be helpful in enhancing crop resilience to future environmental challenges. In partially photorespiratory suppressed plants, it is hypothesized that a gene cluster may have formed between bacterial glycolate dehydrogenase (GDH), glyoxylate carboligase (GCL), and tartronic semi aldehyde (TSR) genes with Arabidopsis allantoin degradation genes like Arabidopsis allantoinase (AtALN) to utilize S-allantoin as a source of nitrogen. Observations of the use of allantoin as an exclusive source of nitrogen or energy by Arabidopsis and Escherichia coli led us to propose a genetic switch control model between nitrogen assimilation and energy producing pathways in partially photorespiratory suppressed plants.

The study aimed at evaluating the antioxidant profile of a medicinal epiphyte Viscum album L. harvested from three tree species, namely, Populus ciliata L, Ulmus villosa L., and Juglans regia L. The crude extracts were obtained with ethanol, methanol, and water and were evaluated for the total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activities using total reducing power (TRP), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 1, 1-diphenyl 1-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide radical scavenging (SOR), and hydroxyl radical scavenging (•OH) assays. Our results showed that crude leaf extracts of plants harvested from the host Juglans regia L. exhibited higher yields of phytochemical constituents and noticeable antioxidative properties. The ethanolic leaf samples reported the highest phenols (13.46 ± 0.87 mg/g), flavonoids (2.38 ± 0.04 mg/g), FRAP (500.63 ± 12.58 μM Fe II/g DW), and DPPH (87.26% ± 0.30 mg/mL). Moreover, the highest values for TRP (4.24 ± 0.26 μg/mL), SOR (89.79% ± 0.73 mg/mL), and OH (67.16% ± 1.15 mg/mL) were obtained from aqueous leaf extracts. Further, Pearson correlation was used for quantifying the relationship between TPC, TFC, and antioxidant (FRAP, DPPH, SOR, OH) activities in Viscum album L. compared to their hosts. It was revealed that the epiphyte showed variation with the type of host plant and extracting solvent.

Nutrient management is critical for rice farming because the crop is grown under diverse conditions, and in most cases, the existing nutrient management practices fail to achieve an attainable yield target. During recent years site specific nutrient management gained importance for a target yield with maximum nutrient use efficiency. Sufficient research work has not been carried out in this direction so far in the rice–rice–pulse (black gram) sequential cropping system under the red and lateritic belt of West Bengal, India. A multi-locational field experiment was conducted from July 2013 to June 2015 at three different locations, namely, Guskara (Burdwan district) and Benuriya (Birbhum district) villages in farmers’ fields and at the university farm of Visva-Bharati, Sriniketan, West Bengal, India. The performance of nutrients was tested by providing ample doses of N, P, K, S, and Zn compared to the omission of these nutrients. The growth parameters, such as crop biomass production, leaf area index, and number of tillers, and yield attributes and yield were influenced by nutrient management treatments. Application of 100% of N, P, K, S, and Zn resulted in its superiority to other nutrient management options studied, and a similar trend was also noted with the treatment in the expression of nutrient use efficiency (NUE) and nutrient response (NR). The available N, P, K, S, and Zn contents in soil increased steadily due to the increase in fertilizer application. The study concluded that optimization of NPK in the rice–rice–pulse cropping system on target yield along with need-based S and Zn application was beneficial for higher productivity.

Hybrid seed set on the female line depends primarily on its flowering synchronization with the restorer line (R), therefore, the sowing of male and female lines must be planned properly to achieve this. Field experiments on different sowing dates (May 1st, May 15th, and May 30th) of R lines (Giza 178R, Giza 179R, and Giza 181R) and cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines (IR69625A, IR70368A, IR58025A, K17A, and G46A) were carried out at the farm of Sakha Agricultural Research Station, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt during 2019 and 2020 to study the effect of sowing dates on flowering synchronization in hybrid rice. The results indicated that the synchronization of flowering between CMS lines and R lines has highly significant effects on the days to 50% heading, number of leaves, effective accumulated temperature (EAT), plant height, panicle exertion percentage, panicle length, number of fertile panicles, panicle weight, seed set percentage, harvest index and seed yield of hybrid rice. The highest seed yield (1.72 and 1.41 t ha−1, respectively in 2019 and 2020) was recorded from the sowing date May 1st and the hybrid combination of Giza 178R × IR58025A (2.06 and 2.12 t ha−1 in 2019 and 2020, respectively). The grain yield had a significant and highly significant positive correlation with the plant height (cm), panicle exertion percentage, panicle length, number of panicles plant−1, panicle weight, seed set percentage, and harvest index. In Egypt, May 1st is the best time for the synchronization of hybrid rice lines and a combination of Giza 178R × IR58025A may be recommended for better performance.

Nanoparticles (NPs), as a novel source of industrial materials, have been extensively used in recent years which ultimately ends up in soils and may cause toxic effects on plants. Gibberellic acid (GA), phytohormone, has ability to minimize abiotic stresses in plants. The role of GA in minimizing titanium dioxide (TiO2) NPs stress in plants is still unknown. In current study, soil was spiked with TiO2 NPs (0, 100, 200, 400, 600 mg/kg) while GA was foliar-sprayed at different concentrations during wheat growth. The findings revealed that TiO2 NPs increased the growth, chlorophyll contents, and nutrient (P, K, Fe, Mn) concentrations in tissues till 400 mg/kg and then decrease was observed at 600 mg/kg level of NPs whereas the values of these parameters were higher compared to control irrespective of NPs levels. The NPs enhanced the antioxidant activities (SOD, POD, CAT, APX) and reduced the oxidative stress (EL, H2O2, MDA) in leaves over the control. Foliar GA further improved the growth, yield, nutrients and antioxidant activities while minimized the oxidative stress compared to respective sole NPs- treatments. The interactive effects of NPs and GA were dose dependent. The results proved that studied doses of TiO2 NPs were not toxic to wheat plants except the highest level (600 mg/kg) used and GA positively affected the yield of wheat under TiO2 NPs application. The GA can be used to improve crop growth in the presence of NPs which, however, needs further investigation at higher doses of TiO2 NPs in various crops.

Purpose: The present study examines the role of leguminous compost (LC), humic acid (HA), and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (P-SB) in alleviating the stress effects of high soil CaCO3 content in Phaseolus vulgaris. Methods: Two pot trials for two consecutive seasons; fall 2019 and summer 2020 were implemented in an open greenhouse. With four replicates specified for each of five treatments, a randomized complete plot design was assigned to each trial. Results: Inoculation of calcareous soil with P-SB (a 1: 1 mixture of two Pseudomonas sp.; Ps. mallei and Ps. cepaceae) significantly exceeded LC, HA, or even LC+HA for the positive results obtained. P-SB facilitated nutrient solubility (e.g., N, K, Fe, and Mn), including conversion of insoluble phosphorous into a form available in the tested soil due to increased soil enzymatic activities (e.g., phosphatases and phytases). This mechanism, combined with a decrease in soil calcium carbonate content and an increase in cation exchange capacity (CEC) and organic matter (OM) content, increased the availability of various nutrients to plants, including P, in the soil, which contributed to the increased plant output. Adequate P content in plants led to a marked decrease in plant acid phosphatase activity under high content of CaCO3. Conclusions The study concluded that the use of P-SB promotes biological activities, nutrient availability, and thus the productivity of calcareous soils, enabling Phaseolus vulgaris plants to withstand stress produced by high CaCO3 content through the development and/or adoption of potentially effective mechanisms.

To mitigate environmental pollution and food contamination caused by inappropriate and excessive herbicide usage, most potent herbicides should be screened to control rice weeds. A research trial was executed for assessing the comparative efficacy of different herbicides to control rice field weeds and to evaluate the toxicity on rice under normal (distilled water) as well as different salinity levels (4 and 8 dS m−1). The study was designed to select the most potent herbicide and its appropriate dose for weed control of rice crop in coastal areas. Fourteen herbicidal treatments were included weed free crop, Pretilachlor (0.25, 0.50, 0.375 and 0.75 kg a.i. ha−1), Propanil + Thiobencarb (0.6 + 1.2, 0.9 + 1.8, 1.2 + 2.4 and 1.8 + 3.6 kg a.i. ha−1), Bensulfuron + MCPA (0.03 + 0.05, 0.045 + 0.075, 0.06 + 0.1 and 0.09 + 0.15 kg a.i. ha−1) and weedy check (control). The results revealed that all tested herbicides in higher than recommended doses for non-saline rice fields were effective in controlling Cyperus iria, Echinochloa colona (salt-tolerant) and Jussiaea linifolia but showed in light injury in rice plants grown in non-saline soils. These higher doses of herbicides recorded severe crop injury under saline conditions indicating their differential efficacy from normal non-saline conditions. Treatments including Pretilachlor (0.375kg a.i. ha−1), Propanil + Thiobencarb (0.9 + 1.8 kg ai/ha), Bensulfuron + MCPA (0.06 + 0.1 kg a.i. ha−1) and Pretilachlor (0.50 kg a.i. ha−1) remained superior in terms of weed control and grain yield production under all salinitylevels at TanjungKarang, Malaysia. It is concluded that herbicides respond differently under saline conditions and optimization of their doses potentially prevent herbicidal injury in rice plants.

Globally, salinity threatens the agricultural crops productivity by inhibiting plant growth and development through osmotic stress and ionic cytotoxicity. The polygenic nature of salinity offers several pragmatic shotgun approaches to improve salinity tolerance. The present study investigated the potential of glutathione (GSH; 1 mM) as an antioxidant and moringa leaf extract (MLE; 3%) as an organic biostimulant applied in sequence as seed priming and foliar spray on wheat growth, physiology and metabolic adaptation under saline conditions (9.16 dS m−1). Plants without any treatment and water spray (H2O) were considered controls. Salinity induced osmotic stress reduced the plant tissue water status and photosynthetic performance, and perturbed ionic (K+/Na+, Ca2+/Na+, K++Ca2+/Na+) and hormonal (IAA, GA3, zeatin, ABA) homeostasis, consequently affected growth and yield in wheat. Sequenced applied MLE and/or GSH improved osmotic stress tolerance by stabilizing membrane integrity and decreasing electrolyte leakage. These positive results were owed to enhanced endogenous GSH and ascorbate levels. Improved tissue water status was attributed to increased osmotic adjustment, better ionic and hormonal homeostasis contributed to improving photosynthetic efficiency and growth under salinity. Exogenously applied MLE and GSH sequences improved grain yield, which was attributed to the maintenance of green leaf area and delayed senescence associated with an increase in photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence traits. In crux, exogenous applied MLE and/or GSH can be the best physiological strategy to reduce the deleterious effects of salinity and improve physiological and metabolic adaptation in wheat under saline field conditions.

Chelate-assisted phytoextraction by high biomass producing macrophyte plant Typha latifolia L. commonly known as cattail, is gaining much attention worldwide. The present study investigated the effects of Lead (Pb) and Mercury (Hg) on physiology and biochemistry of plant, Pb and Hg uptake in T. latifolia with and without citric acid (CA) amendment. The uniform seedlings of T. latifolia were treated with various concentrations in the hydroponics as: Pb and Hg (1, 2.5, 5 mM) each alone and/or with CA (5 mM). After four weeks of treatments, the results revealed that Pb and Hg significantly reduced the plant agronomic traits as compare to non-treated plants. The addition of CA improved the plant physiology and enhanced the antioxidant enzymes activities to overcome Pb and Hg induced oxidative damage and electrolyte leakage. Our results depicted that Pb and Hg uptake and accumulation by T. latifolia was dose depend whereas, the addition of CA further increased the concentration and accumulation of Pb and Hg by up to 22 & 35% Pb and 72 & 40% Hg in roots, 25 & 26% Pb and 85 & 60% Hg in stems and 22 & 15 Pb and 100 & 58% Hg in leaves respectively compared to Pb and Hg treated only plants. On other hand, the root-shoot translocation factor was ≥1 and bioconcentration factor was also ≥2 for both Pb & Hg. The results also revealed that T. latifolia showed greater tolerance towards Hg and accumulated higher Hg in all parts compared with Pb.

Lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) are one of the most harmful heavy metals (HMs), entering into the food chain through the irrigation of crops with an industrial effluent. The present study was performed to evaluate the toxic effects of textile effluents and performance of citric acid (CA) on phytoextraction potential of Lemna minor L. and Typha latifolia L. in an artificially designed wetland. Different doses of textile wastewater (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%) and CA (10 mM) were applied alone and in combination. Plants were harvested and the data was collected regarding agronomic traits, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzymes, reactive oxygen species (ROS), electrolytic leakage (EL) and HMs uptake and accumulation. The results depicted that the concentration and accumulation of Cu, Pb and Cr in different parts of T. latifolia plant was increased with and without CA addition. The maximum concentration of Pb, Cu and Cr increased in leaves by 279, 240 & 171%, in stem by 192, 172 & 154%, and in roots by 224, 183 & 168%, respectively. Similarly, the accumulation of Pb, Cu and Cr increased in leaves by 91, 71 & 36%, in stem by 57, 46 & 36% and in roots by 76, 53 & 45%, respectively in plants treated with 100% textile effluent as compared to the 25% textile effluent treated plants under CA amendment. In L. minor, the concentration of Pb, Cu & Cr increased by 542, 411 and 397% while accumulation increased by 101, 59 & 55% respectively in overall plant biomass.

The negative impacts of fossil fuel on the environment should be replaced by clean and sustainable energy sources worldwide. Therefore, the use of biodiesel as a clean energy source is crucial. Biodiesel is produced from various natural resources through a transesterification process. Considering the importance of this topic, this study focuses on the assessment of oil properties of Thymelaea hirsuta and Echinops spinosus as primary sources for biodiesel production. The two investigated plants were collected from the Western Desert of Egypt. The results showed that the lignocellulosic content was about 57.3 and 79.8 g/100 g in E. spinosus and 59.1 and 82.8 g/100 g in T. hirsuta, respectively. The two investigated samples showed variable lipid contents (30.2%&ndash, 76.1%). The GC-MS fatty acid profile characterized seven FAs in E. spinosus and twelf FAs in T. hirsuta. The greatest CN was calculated in T. hirsuta (379.2) compared to the lowest in E. spinosus (229.9). Furthermore, the values of saponification number (SN) were 27.9 in E. spinosus and 16.07 in T. hirsuta. The value of higher heating value (HHV) was about 47.5 MJ/kg in E. spinosus and 48.3 MJ/kg in T. hirsuta. Meanwhile, T. hirsuta exhibited a higher induction period (IP) value (19.3 h) comparable to that of E. spinosus (4.3 h). The results revealed that both plants are potential sources for biodiesel production according to various international standards for biodiesel production, and this work appears to be one of the first reports regarding such wild xerophytic plants as promising new primary sources for biodiesel production in Egypt.

In rice-based cropping system of northern Bangladesh, mustard planting is delayed due to late harvest of monsoon rice (Transplanted Aman rice; T. Aman rice). The late sown mustard is often exposed to high-temperature stress during the reproductive stage, which causes a significant decrease in seed yield. Most of the farmers plant a low yielding local mustard variety 'Tori-7', which is sensitive to high-temperature stress. The Oil Seeds Research Centre of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute has recently released short duration and high-yielding mustard varieties for the rice-based cropping system of northern Bangladesh to tackle this issue. However, the performance of these varieties in the target cropping system under late sown conditions (together with exposure to heat stress) has not been evaluated yet. Therefore, this two-year field experiment was conducted to assess the performance of newly released mustard varieties 'BARI Sarisha-14' and `BARI Sarisha-15' in comparison with the local check variety 'Tori-7' sown at five planting dates (viz. October 21, November 1, November 10, November 20, and November 30). The delay in sowing shortened time (days) to flowering and maturity, regardless of the variety. Similarly, plant height, branches/plant and total dry matter accumulation of the tested varieties were also reduced upon delay in planting. The greatest seed yield was observed in varieties `BARI Sarisha-15' and `BARI Sarisha-14' when sown on October 21. These two varieties produced fair seed yield when sown at November 20. However, the local variety 'Tori7' yielded the least across all the planting dates. Therefore, the varieties `BARI Sarisha-14' and `BARI Sarisha-15' may be planted in the rice-based cropping system of northern Bangladesh after harvest of T. Aman rice to get maximum seed yield.

Phytoremediation via phyto-extraction is well recognized and sustainable principle for the economical removal of heavy metals from contaminated water and soil. The twofold objective of the present research work was to investigate the remediation potential of fenugreek for Cu under the influence of ascorbic acid (AA). The effect of copper-ascorbic acid chelation on the growth regulation of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graceum L.) and its potential to accumulate Cu was investigated in hydroponic medium to optimize concentration with complete randomized design (CRD). Juvenile fenugreek plants were treated with different treatments of AA (5 mM) and Cu (100, 250 and 500 μM). The different morpho-physiological parameters of fenugreek plant such as growth, biomass and chlorophylls were significantly reduced under Cu stress. However, the activities of antioxidant enzymes, electrolyte leakage and reactive oxygen species enhanced with increasing concentration of applied Cu. Results indicated significant increase in plant growth, biomass, physiology and antioxidant enzymes and decrease in reactive oxygen species and electrolyte production in AA mediated fenugreek plants compared to controls and Cu only treated plants. However, it was also found that AA enhanced Cu concentration maximum up to 42% in leaf, 18% in stem and 45% in roots as compared to Cu treated only plants. Moreover, application of AA signified the research results revealing to act as growth regulator and chelator under Cu stress.

Toxic trace element pollution in the agricultural soils may negatively affect the plant growth. This study mainly focused on investigating the impact of co-composted biochar and farmyard manure (FYM) on wheat growth and cadmium (Cd) accumulation by plants. The different ratios of FYM and biochar were composted for two and half months and mixed in Cd-contaminated soil at a rate of 2% w/w of each treatment. After this, wheat seeds were sown in the soil at normal soil moisture (70% of soil water holding capacity (WHC)) level. After 50-day of sowing, both normal and drought stress (35% WHC) levels were applied and plants were harvested at 122 days after seed sowing. The results depicted that Cd and drought alone depressed the wheat growth, elevated the oxidative stress and Cd contents in wheat tissues. However, application of co-composted treatments increased the growth, yield, chlorophyll contents and minimized the oxidative stress in the leaves along with the reduction of Cd concentrations in wheat tissues mainly in grains. The amendments enhanced the post-harvest soil pH and minimized the soil bioavailable Cd. The increasing ratios of biochar in the compost were most effective in improving the growth and alleviating Cd toxicity and its concentration in grains. Overall, co-composted biochar and FYM might be suitable for reducing Cd in grains, but the field studies in different soils and plants are required to further explore the effects of these amendments before final recommendations.

The present study examines the role of leguminous compost (LC), humic acids (HA), and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (P-SB) in alleviating the stress effects of high soil CaCO3 content in Phaseolus vulgaris. Two pot trials for two consecutive seasons, fall 2019 and summer 2020 were implemented in an open greenhouse. A mixed three-way ANOVA, two independent factors (season and soil treatments) and one within factors (time) were used with four replicates. Residual maximum likelihood (REML) analysis was used for the mixed model of the studied traits. Inoculation of calcareous soil with P-SB (a 1:1 mixture of two Pseudomonas sp., Ps. mallei and Ps. cepaceae) significantly exceeded LC, HA, or even LC+HA for the positive results obtained. P-SB facilitated nutrient solubility (e.g., N, K, Fe, and Mn), including conversion of insoluble phosphorous into a form available in the tested soil due to increased soil enzymatic activities (e.g., phosphatases and phytases). This mechanism, combined with a decrease in soil calcium carbonate content and an increase in cation exchange capacity (CEC) and organic matter (OM) content, increased the availability of various nutrients to plants, including P, in the soil, which contributed to the increased plant output. Adequate P content in plants led to a marked decrease in plant acid phosphatase activity under high content of CaCO3. The study concluded that the use of P-SB promotes biological activities, nutrient availability, and thus the productivity of calcareous soils, enabling Phaseolus vulgaris plants to withstand stress produced by high CaCO3 content through the development and/or adoption of potentially effective mechanisms. Strong highly significant interactions between the treatments and time were observed using the Wald’s statistics test, which indicates a positive correlation.

In search of a safe, cost-effective, and sustainable method for the disposal and management of coal fly ash (CFA), seeds of carrot were sown in earthen pots containing growth substrate consisting of field soil amended with different concentrations of weathered CFA at w/w % ratios. Results suggested that CFA added many essential plant nutrients to the growth substrate and improved some important soil characteristics such as pH, electric conductivity, porosity, and water holding capacity. The growth substrate containing 15% of CFA proved most suitable for growing carrots. Plants grown in 15% CFA amended soil had significantly (p ≤ 0.05) enhanced plant growth, yield, photosynthetic pigments, nitrate reductase activity, protein, and carbohydrate contents as compared to the control. The activity of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD and CAT was significantly upregulated in 15% CFA amended soil as compared to the control. The biomineralization of various elements in the edible part of the carrot was well under the limits and no toxic metal was detected in the edible part of the carrot. The present study, therefore, attempts to delineate the application of weathered CFA as a soil amendment in agroecosystems to improve the productivity of lands through a cost-effective and an ecofriendly manner.
