Abstract

Lupus nephritis (LN) is a pathologically heterogenous autoimmune disease linked to end-stage kidney disease and mortality. Better therapeutic strategies are needed as only 30%-40% of patients completely respond to treatment. Noninvasive biomarkers of intrarenal inflammation may guide more precise approaches. Because urine collects the byproducts of kidney inflammation, we studied the urine proteomic profiles of 225 patients with LN (573 samples) in the longitudinal Accelerating Medicines Partnership in RA/SLE cohort. Urinary biomarkers of monocyte/neutrophil degranulation (i.e., PR3, S100A8, azurocidin, catalase, cathepsins, MMP8), macrophage activation (i.e., CD163, CD206, galectin-1), wound healing/matrix degradation (i.e., nidogen-1, decorin), and IL-16 characterized the aggressive proliferative LN classes and significantly correlated with histological activity. A decline of these biomarkers after 3 months of treatment predicted the 1-year response more robustly than proteinuria, the standard of care (AUC: CD206 0.91, EGFR 0.9, CD163 0.89, proteinuria 0.8). Candidate biomarkers were validated and provide potentially treatable targets. We propose these biomarkers of intrarenal immunological activity as noninvasive tools to diagnose LN and guide treatment and as surrogate endpoints for clinical trials. These findings provide insights into the processes involved in LN activity. This data set is a public resource to generate and test hypotheses and validate biomarkers.

Introduction Depression is a common emotion-based illness [...], Background: Depressive disorders are prevalent mental health conditions that significantly impair individuals' social functioning and communication competence. These challenges can exacerbate depressive symptoms, creating a vicious cycle that hinders recovery and overall well-being. Despite the growing recognition of the impact of depressive disorders on social functioning and communication competence, there remains a significant gap in effective interventions addressing these specific areas. Aims: This research aims to investigate the effect of interpersonal effectiveness skill training on social functioning and communication competence among clients with depressive disorder. Design: A quasiexperimental research design. Setting: The research procedure was carried out in the outpatient clinic of Alexandria University Hospital. Subjects: The study group, which included 42 males and 18 females, and the control group had the same number of patients. Tools: After the preliminary assessment of depression, three instruments were used to collect data: a structured interview schedule that gathered sociodemographic and clinical information, the Scale of Communication Competence, and the Social Functioning Scale. Results: The study group showed a positive difference in their social functioning and communication competence score compared with the control group. Implication: The findings of this study have significant implications for the treatment and support of clients with depressive disorder by incorporating structured skill-building programs into therapeutic regimens for individuals with depressive disorders. Conclusion: IESTI can enhance patients with depression's ability to communicate competently and function socially.

Abstract

Background: Post-COVID-19 dyspnea is a complex condition characterized by persistent and distressing shortness of breath after recovery from acute COVID-19 infection. Objectives: This study aims to identify the possible causes and key factors contributing to post-COVID-19 dyspnea. Patients and methods: A cross sectional study was done at Qena University Hospital including 100 patients with post-COVID-19 dyspnea. The patient demographic data, ABG, CBC, 6MWT, spirometry, ECG, echocardiography and CT results were collected. Ct was done was done at acute COVID-19 phase, after 3 months and after 6 months. Results: The mean age of the study cohort was (60.06 years). Interstitial lung disease (51%) and ischemic heart disease (20%) were the main causes. Positive correlations were found between the dyspnea grade using mMRC and both ECG abnormalities, EF, CRP, TLC, lung abnormalities (bilateral ground glass opacities, CORAD IV), and interstitial pattern (diffuse intestinal thickening, honey combing), While there were negative correlations were seen with LVEDD, and serum Vit D. Conclusion: This study sheds light on the complexity of post-COVID-19 dyspnea, emphasizing the need for a multidisciplinary approach in the effective management of this condition.

Abstract

ObjectivesIn lupus nephritis the pathological diagnosis from tissue retrieved during kidney biopsy drives treatment and management. Despite recent approval of new drugs, complete remission rates remain well under aspirational levels, necessitating identification of new therapeutic targets by greater dissection of the pathways to tissue inflammation and injury. This study assessed the safety of kidney biopsies in patients with SLE enrolled in the Accelerating Medicines Partnership, a consortium formed to molecularly deconstruct nephritis.Methods475 patients with SLE across 15 clinical sites in the USA consented to obtain tissue for research purposes during a clinically indicated kidney biopsy. Adverse events (AEs) were documented for 30 days following the procedure and were determined to be related or unrelated by all site investigators. Serious AEs were defined according to the National Institutes of Health reporting guidelines.Results34 patients (7.2%) experienced a procedure-related AE: 30 with haematoma, 2 with jets, 1 with pain and 1 with an arteriovenous fistula. Eighteen (3.8%) experienced a serious AE requiring hospitalisation; four patients (0.8%) required a blood transfusion related to the kidney biopsy. At one site where the number of cores retrieved during the biopsy was recorded, the mean was 3.4 for those who experienced a related AE (n=9) and 3.07 for those who did not experience any AE (n=140). All related AEs resolved.ConclusionsProcurement of research tissue should be considered feasible, accompanied by a complication risk likely no greater than that incurred for standard clinical purposes. In the quest for targeted treatments personalised based on molecular findings, enhanced diagnostics beyond histology will likely be required.

44. Engaging ESP Students with Brain-Based Learning for Improved Listening Skills, Vocabulary Retention and Motivation

Abstract

The concept of teaching and learning has changed drastically over the past few years by the virtue of both research results carried out in the fields of second/foreign language learning and acquisition. Of all these researches, findings related to the brain structure and functions in cooperation with cognitive aspects of the education process, including the study of learning styles and intelligence have struck the language learning domain. A due understanding of learners' learning styles, emotional preferences as well as their memory functions help teachers to build their teaching practices to optimize students' learning. Brain Based Learning Approach (BBLA) is a natural, motivating, and a positive way that supports and maximizes learning and teaching. The current study implements Brain Based Learning Approach to improve listening skills of Business students, vocabulary retention and establish positive attitudes with regards to their brain dominance and learning styles. To achieve these aims, listening skills test, vocabulary retention test, adapted form of Robert Gardner Motivation Scale, were developed and used. The sample of the study consists of thirty-six Business majors. Findings show that Brain Based Learning is an effective approach for developing listening skills, consolidate vocabulary recalling and retention. It also helps maximize motivation towards learning language skills.

45. Scaffolding Reading Comprehension Skills

Abstract

The current study investigates whether English language teachers use scaffolding strategies for developing their students' reading comprehension skills or just for assessing their comprehension. It also tries to demonstrate whether teachers are aware of these strategies or they use them as a matter of habit. A questionnaire as well as structured interviews were basically designed for the purpose of the study. The descriptive qualitative research design was adopted due to suitability for the nature of the study. Results of the study revealed that Non-native English language teachers are not aware of the nature of scaffolding strategies they use; they use such strategies for the purpose of assessing their students' comprehension rather than scaffolding their comprehension. It is recommended that English language teachers have an adequate orientation of the nature of scaffolding strategies, to what extent to be used (when to begin using these strategies and when to stop using them) and the significance in developing comprehension skills of students in the mainstream schools.

Introduction: Cervical cancer presents a significant global public health challenge, particularly affecting low- and middle-income countries like Egypt. Despite the availability of effective screening methods such as Pap smears and HPV testing, the incidence of cervical cancer remains high in Egypt. Health literacy, which refers to the ability to access, understand, and utilize basic health information and services to make informed decisions, is crucial in influencing individuals' health behaviors, including their participation in cancer screening programs. Objectives: To examine the correlation between health literacy levels and cervical cancer screening behaviors among women. Methods: This study employed a multi-site cross-sectional research design from September 2023 to January 2024. The research was conducted at four primary health care (PHC) facilities in the Damanhur district of Egypt. Three hundred fifty women participated in the study, completing a comprehensive questionnaire that included a Woman's Social and Health Form, a Cervical Cancer Knowledge Scale, a Cervical Cancer Screening Behaviors Scale, and a Health Literacy Scale (HLS-SF12). Results: The study revealed significant relationships between the importance of health literacy (HL) in understanding cervical cancer (CC) knowledge and screening behaviors among Egyptian women. A positive correlation was found between Knowledge and HL (r = 0.507, p < 0.001). Conversely, perceived barriers negatively correlated with knowledge and HL (r = -0.172, p < 0.05; r = -0.277, p < 0.01). The regression analysis revealed that higher levels of HL were significantly associated with greater knowledge about CC (B = 0.148, p < 0.001). Conversely, knowledge about CC was also found to be a strong predictor of higher HL levels (B = 1.205, p < 0.001). These results highlight the bidirectional relationship between HL and knowledge, where improvements in one can enhance the other. Conclusion: Addressing misconceptions and increasing knowledge about the importance of regular screenings, mainly through accessible and culturally appropriate channels, could lead to an improved uptake of cervical cancer screening services. Overall, this study lays a foundation for future research to continue exploring ways to improve cervical cancer prevention and control efforts among women. Clinical trial number: Not applicable. Abstract

Background: Spiritual leadership emphasizes that nurses encounter situations that require compassion, empathy, and a deep understanding of the human experience. Passion can drive nurses' motivation, engagement, and commitment to patient care. Altruism is a core value in nursing that involves selfless concern for the well-being of others. Spiritual leadership might be an essential organizational resource in enhancing followers' inspiring vision, compassion for others, and passion for their work. Aim of the study: To investigate the role of spiritual leadership in the relationship between altruism and passion for work among nurse colleagues. Subjects & method: A multicenter descriptive, cross-sectional research study was conducted at six Nursing Egyptian faculties affiliated with Alexandria, Port-Said, Fayoum, Damanhur, Assiut, and Sohag Universities, with 391 nurse colleagues. Data collection tools: Personal and Job-related Data Questionnaire, Spiritual Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ), Passion Scale, and 9- Self-Report Altruism Scale (9- SRA) were utilized to collect data. Results: The current study verified that nurse colleagues had high levels of perceived spiritual leadership, passion, and altruism (50.9, 47.6, and 40.2, respectively). The results revealed noteworthy positive correlations between spiritual leadership, passion, and altruism (r = 0.644, 0.519, & 0.509). Furthermore, mediation analysis highlighted that spiritual leadership could mediate the effect of altruism on the passion level. Conclusion: This study delivers valued insights into the crucial role of spiritual leadership in augmenting nurse colleagues' altruistic tendencies and passion. Recommendations: Cultivating workplace spirituality on a daily agenda is a key component of management that requires spiritual competencies from nurse leaders. Abstract

Background: Monkeypox has emerged as a global health concern, necessitating preventive measures and awareness among healthcare students. Understanding nursing students' fears, concerns, and preventive practices regarding Monkeypox can help improve preparedness and response strategies. Aim: This study aimed to assess the levels of fear, concerns, and preventive practices related to monkeypox among nursing students at Beni Suef University, Egypt, during the 2024–2025 academic year. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was employed, involving 505 nursing students systematically randomized recruited. Data collection utilized three validated tools: the Monkeypox Fear Scale, Monkeypox Concern Scale, and Monkeypox Preventive Practices Scale. Reliability was confirmed with Cronbach's alpha values ranging from 0.87 to 0.94. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation, and multiple linear regression using SPSS Version 23. Results: Most (56.2%) students rarely worried about Monkeypox infection, though 49.2% reported anxiety influenced by media coverage. High preventive practices were noted, with 60.6% frequently practicing hygiene measures. A strong positive correlation between Monkeypox concern and fear (r = 0.646, p < 0.001) and a moderate positive correlation between Monkeypox concern and preventive practices (r = 0.229, p = 0.001). Fear was also significantly correlated with preventive practices (r = 0.432, p < 0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis (R² = 0.216, F = 22.633, p < 0.001) revealed that fear was a strong positive predictor of preventive practices, while Monkeypox concern had a positive but non-significant effect (B = 0.138, p = 0.156). Age was not a significant predictor (B = 0.251, p = 0.637), whereas family income showed a significant negative association (B = -1.885, p = 0.010). Conclusion: The study revealed moderate fear and concerns among nursing students, with generally high adherence to preventive practices. Implication: Findings suggest the need for targeted health education programs to address monkeypox-related concerns and enhance preventive measures, thus improving nursing students' readiness to respond to emerging health threats. ABSTRACT Introduction Aims Method Result Implication Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are among the key vulnerability factors explaining the development and persistence of symptoms in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Furthermore, it was suggested that EMSs might impact recovery‐related outcomes, including psychological and recovery capital, among individuals with BPD.To investigate the relationship among EMSs, psychological and recovery capital in individuals with BPD disorder.A descriptive correlational research design was conducted in Minya Outpatients' Psychiatric Hospital Clinic, using the Young Schema Questionnaire–Short Form (YSQ‐S2), Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ) and Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS) to collect data from 200 individuals with BPD.The findings suggest that EMSs significantly correlated with the total psychological and recovery capital scores (0.119, 0.024 and −0.025, 0.05). Moreover, linear regression analyses exhibit that EMSs, regarding social isolation failure and vulnerability to harm, are significant negative predictors of recovery capital (t = −2.760, p = 0.006 and t = −3.919, p < 0.001, respectively).The complex interplay between EMSs and recovery‐related outcomes provides valuable insights for planning and implementing structured psychotherapeutic interventions based on specific schema patterns. Our existing findings can also serve as a valuable reference for mental health nursing in clinical practice by enhancing their understanding of the underlying causes of maladaptive behaviours commonly seen in BPD, allowing them to tailor patient‐centred care interventions and thereby reduce the risk of relapse. Abstract

Introduction: Smartphones have significantly increased digital engagement among young people due to their ease of use and constant internet access. Nomophobia and the fear of missing out are associated with mobile and internet use, potentially impacting students' mental health and academic performance. Objectives: To provide the prevalence of nomophobia and fear of missing out while shedding light on the role of psychological alienation between them. Methods: A multisite descriptive correlational study was conducted among 1,273 undergraduate nursing students at six Egyptian universities: North Sinai, South Sinai, Port-Said, Suez Canal, Suez, and Damanhur University, Egypt. From June 2023 to November 15, 2023, the students were surveyed using questionnaires on nomophobia, fear of missing out, and psychological alienation. Results: Nursing students experienced moderate to severe levels of nomophobia (37.4%–45.3%) and psychological alienation (45.8%–55.4%). There was a significant positive correlation between nomophobia and fear of missing out (r =.908, p <.001), as well as between nomophobia and psychological alienation (r =.377, p <.001). Psychological alienation was also found to mediate the relationship between fear of missing out and nomophobia, with the indirect effect being statistically significant (indirect effect = 1.000; p <.001). Conclusion: The study highlights the significant prevalence of nomophobia and psychological alienation among nursing students. The findings underscore the complex interplay between digital connectivity issues, psychological disconnection, and the fear of missing out. In addition, findings suggest that psychological alienation plays a crucial role in how fear of missing out impacts nomophobia among nursing students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
