Context. Transient sky astronomy is entering a new era with the advent of the SVOM mission (Space Variable Objects Monitor), which was successfully launched on the 26th of June, 2024. The primary goal of SVOM is to monitor the hard X-ray sky searching for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). On top of its on-board follow-up capabilities, SVOM will be backed by its ground segment composed of several facilities, of which the near-infrared imager CAGIRE. Mounted on the robotic telescope COLIBRI, it will be a unique instrument, able to perform fast follow-up of GRB afterglows in J and H bands, an ideal combination to catch high-redshift (z>6) and/or obscured GRBs. Aims. This paper aims at estimating the performances of CAGIRE for GRB near-infrared afterglow detection based on the characteristics of the detector and the specificities of the COLIBRI telescope. Quickly fading GRB afterglows pose challenges that should be addressed by adapting observing strategies to the capabilities of CAGIRE. Methods. We use an end-to-end image simulator to produce realistic CAGIRE images, taking into account results from the characterization of the ALFA detector used by CAGIRE. We implemented a GRB afterglow generator that simulates infrared lightcurves and spectra based on published observation of distant GRBs (z>6). Results. We retrieved the photometry of 9 GRB afterglows in various scenarios covered by CAGIRE. Catching afterglows as early as two minutes after burst allows the identification of a nIR counterpart in the brightest 4 events. When artificially redshifted even further away, these events remain detectable by CAGIRE up to z=9.6 in J band, and z=13.3 in H band, indicating the potential of CAGIRE to be a pioneer in the identification of the most distant GRBs to date., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

With the expanding integration of infrared instruments in astronomical missions, accurate per-pixel flux estimation for near-infrared hybrid detectors has become critical to the success of these missions. Based on CPPM's involvement in both SVOM/Colibri and Euclid missions, this study introduces universally applicable methods and framework for characterizing IR hybrid detectors and decorrelating their intrinsic properties. The characterization framework, applied to the ALFA detector and \Euclid's H2RG, not only validates the proposed methods but also points out subtle behaviors inherent to each detector.

Thanks to the advent of sensitive gravitational wave (GW) and neutrino detectors, multi-messenger (MM) astronomy will deeply transform our understanding of the Universe contents and evolution over cosmological times. To fully exploit the forthcoming GW and neutrino discoveries, it is crucial to detect as many electromagnetic (EM) counterparts as possible, but up to now, only one event has been detected by both GW detectors (Ligo/Virgo) and electromagnetic detectors (Fermi/GBM (Gamma ray Burst Monitor) and Integral), the short gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A/GW 170817 associated with the merger of a binary neutron star. To help improving the rate of joint MM events, it is crucial for the EM detectors in particular at high-energy in space to observe all the sky with a decent sensitivity. To do so, we propose the development of 3U Transat (TRANsient sky SATellites) project. 3U Transat is a constellation of nano-satellites offering a full sky coverage with a limited investment. The goal of this article is to present the 3U Transat project and its main scientific drivers as well as its current status. We will also describe our dynamic simulator used to optimise the scientific performances of the constellation. Context. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can be detected at cosmological distances and therefore can be used to study the contents and phases of the early Universe. The 4-150 keV wide-field trigger camera ECLAIRs to fly on board the Space-based multi-band Variable Object Monitor (SVOM) mission, dedicated to studying the high-energy transient sky in synergy with multi-messenger follow-up instruments, has been adapted to detect high-redshift (high-z) GRBs. Aims. Investigating the detection capabilities of ECLAIRs for high-z GRBs and estimating the impacts of instrumental biases in reconstructing some of the source measured properties, focusing on GRB duration biases as a function of redshift. Methods. We simulated realistic detection scenarios for a sample of 162 already observed GRBs with known redshift values as they would have been seen by ECLAIRs. We simulated them at redshift values equal and higher than their measured value. Then, we assessed whether they would be detected with a trigger algorithm resembling that on board of ECLAIRs, and derived quantities such as T90, for those that would have been detected. Results. We find that ECLAIRs would be capable of detecting GRBs up to very high redshift values (e.g. 20 GRBs in our sample are detectable within more than 0.4 of the ECLAIRs field of view for z > 12). The ECLAIRs low-energy threshold of 4 keV, contributes to this great detection capability, as it may enhance it at high redshift (z > 10) by over 10% compared to a 15 keV low-energy threshold. We also show that the detection of GRBs at high-z values may imprint tip-of-the-iceberg biases on the GRB duration measurements, which can affect the reconstruction of other source properties., Comment: 13 pages, 14 Figures, 2 Tables. High-energy neutrinos could be produced in the interaction of charged cosmic rays with matter or radiation surrounding astrophysical sources. To look for transient sources associated with neutrino emission, a follow-up program of neutrino alerts has been operating within the ANTARES Collaboration since 2009. This program, named TAToO, has triggered robotic optical telescopes (MASTER, TAROT, ROTSE and the SVOM ground based telescopes) immediately after the detection of any relevant neutrino candidate and scheduled several observations in the weeks following the detection. A subset of ANTARES events with highest probabilities of being of cosmic origin has also been followed by the Swift and the INTEGRAL satellites, the Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope and the H.E.S.S. high-energy gamma-ray telescope. The results of twelve years of observations are reported. No optical counterpart has been significantly associated with an ANTARES candidate neutrino signal during image analysis. Constraints on transient neutrino emission have been set. In September 2015, ANTARES issued a neutrino alert and during the follow-up, a potential transient counterpart was identified by Swift and MASTER. A multi-wavelength follow-up campaign has allowed to identify the nature of this source and has proven its fortuitous association with the neutrino. The Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) is a Chinese-French mission dedicated to the study of the transient sky. It is scheduled to start operations in 2024. ECLAIRs is a coded-mask telescope with a large field of view. It is designed to detect and localize gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the energy range from 4 keV up to 120 keV. In 2021, the ECLAIRs telescope underwent various calibration campaigns in vacuum test-chambers to evaluate its performance. Between 4 and 8 keV, the counting response of the detection plane shows inhomogeneities between pixels from different production batches. The efficiency inhomogeneity is caused by low-efficiency pixels (LEPs) from one of the two batches, together with high-threshold pixels (HTPs) whose threshold was raised to avoid cross-talk effects. In addition, some unexpected noise was found in the detection plane regions close to the heat pipes. We study the impact of these inhomogeneities and of the heat-pipe noise at low energies on the ECLAIRs onboard triggers. We propose different strategies in order to mitigate these impacts and to improve the onboard trigger performance. We analyzed the data from the calibration campaigns and performed simulations with the ground model of the ECLAIRs trigger software in order to design and evaluate the different strategies. Most of the impact of HTPs can be corrected for by excluding HTPs from the trigger processing. To correct for the impact of LEPs, an efficiency correction in the shadowgram seems to be a good solution. We collected the optical light curve data of 227 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed with the TAROT, COATLI, and RATIR telescopes. These consist of 133 detections and 94 upper limits. We constructed average light curves in the observer and rest frames in both X-rays (from {\itshape Swift}/XRT) and in the optical. Our analysis focused on investigating the observational and intrinsic properties of GRBs. Specifically, we examined observational properties, such as the optical brightness function of the GRBs at $T=1000$ seconds after the trigger, as well as the temporal slope of the afterglow. We also estimated the redshift distribution for the GRBs within our sample. Of the 227 GRBs analysed, we found that 116 had a measured redshift. Based on these data, we calculated a local rate of $\rho_0=0.2$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ for these events with $z<1$. To explore the intrinsic properties of GRBs, we examined the average X-ray and optical light curves in the rest frame. We use the {\scshape afterglowpy} library to generate synthetic curves to constrain the parameters typical of the bright GRB jet, such as energy (${\langle} {E_{0}}{\rangle}\sim 10^{53.6}$~erg), opening angle (${\langle}\theta_\mathrm{core}{\rangle}\sim 0.2$~rad), and density (${\langle}n_\mathrm{0}{\rangle}\sim10^{-2.1}$ cm$^{-3}$). Furthermore, we analyse microphysical parameters, including the fraction of thermal energy in accelerated electrons (${\langle}\epsilon_e{\rangle}\sim 10^{-1.37}$) and in the magnetic field (${\langle}\epsilon_B{\rangle}\sim10^{-2.26}$), and the power-law index of the population of non-thermal electrons (${\langle}p{\rangle}\sim 2.2$)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages and 9 figures

The use of high energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) as probes of the distant universe relies on the close collaboration between space and ground facilities. In this context, the Sino-French mission SVOM has been designed to combine a space and a ground segment and to make the most of their synergy. On the ground, the 1.3 meter robotic telescope COLIBRI, jointly developed by France and Mexico, will quickly point the sources detected by the space hard X-ray imager ECLAIRs, in order to detect and localise their visible/NIR counterpart and alert large telescopes in minutes. COLIBRI is equipped with two visible cameras, called DDRAGO-blue and DDRAGO-red, and an infrared camera, called CAGIRE, designed for the study of high redshift GRBs candidates. Being a low-noise NIR camera mounted at the focus of an alt-azimutal robotic telescope imposes specific requirements on CAGIRE. We describe here the main characteristics of the camera: its optical, mechanical and electronics architecture, the ALFA detector, and the operation of the camera on the telescope. The instrument description is completed by three sections presenting the calibration strategy, an image simulator incorporating known detector effects, and the automatic reduction software for the ramps acquired by the detector. CAGIRE is the near infrared camera of the Colibr\'i robotic telescope, designed for the follow-up of SVOM alerts. It is based on the ALFA 2k x 2k detector, from the LYNRED French Company, operating in "Up the Ramp" mode. An observation consists in a series of short (1-2 minutes) exposures during which the pixels are read out every 1.3 second, while continuously accumulating charges proportionally to the received flux. At filling factor $\nu=0,\pm1$, the ground state of graphene is a particular SU(4) ferromagnet which hosts a rich phase diagram along with several spin, pseudospin or "entanglement" magnon modes. Motivated by recent experiments, we study a $\nu=-1|0|-1$ Fabry-P\'erot magnonic junction. If the ground state at $\nu=0$ is spin polarized, there exist two spin modes which interfere and create a beating pattern, while pseudospin modes are reflected. The same scenario occurs for pseudospin magnon if the $\nu=0$ ground state is pseudospin polarized. The observation of such an interference pattern would provide information on the low-energy anisotropies and thus on the ground state., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

This paper compares the population of BBH mergers detected by LIGO/Virgo with selected long GRB world models convolved with a delay function (LGRBs are used as a tracer of stellar mass BH formation). The comparison involves the redshift distribution and the fraction of LGRBs required to produce the local rate of BBH mergers. We find that BBH mergers and LGRBs cannot have the same formation history, unless BBHs mergers have a long coalescence time of several Gyr. This would imply that BHs born during the peak of long GRB formation at redshift z~2-3 merge within the horizon of current GW interferometers. We also show that LGRBs are more numerous than BBH mergers, so that most of them do not end their lives in BBH mergers. We interpret these results as an indication that BBH mergers and LGRBs constitute two distinct populations of stellar mass BHs, with LGRBs being more frequent than BBH mergers. We speculate that the descendants of LGRBs may resemble galactic High-Mass X-Ray Binaries more than BBH mergers. We finally discuss the possible existence of a sub-population of fast-spinning LGRBs descendants among BBH mergers, showing that this population, if it exists, is expected to become dominant beyond redshift z ~ 1, leading to a change in the observed properties of BBH mergers., Comment: 21 pages, 7 Figures, 2 Tables

The Sino-French space mission SVOM is mainly designed to detect, localize and follow-up Gamma-Ray Bursts and other high-energy transients. The exploration of the universe has recently entered a new era thanks to the multi-messenger paradigm, characterized by a continuous increase in the quantity and quality of experimental data that is obtained by the detection of the various cosmic messengers (photons, neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves) from numerous origins. They give us information about their sources in the universe and the properties of the intergalactic medium. Moreover, multi-messenger astronomy opens up the possibility to search for phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity. On the one hand, the most energetic events allow us to test our physical theories at energy regimes which are not directly accessible in accelerators; on the other hand, tiny effects in the propagation of very high energy particles could be amplified by cosmological distances. After decades of merely theoretical investigations, the possibility of obtaining phenomenological indications of Planck-scale effects is a revolutionary step in the quest for a quantum theory of gravity, but it requires cooperation between different communities of physicists (both theoretical and experimental). We study generalized spin waves in graphene under a strong magnetic field when the Landau-level filling factor is $\nu=\pm 1$. In this case, the ground state is a particular SU(4) quantum Hall ferromagnet, in which not only the physical spin is fully polarized but also the pseudo-spin associated with the valley degree of freedom. The nature of the ground state and the spin-valley polarization depend on explicit symmetry breaking terms that are also reflected in the generalised spin-wave spectrum. In addition to pure spin waves, one encounters valley-pseudo-spin waves as well as more exotic entanglement waves that have a mixed spin-valley character. Most saliently, the SU(4) symmetry-breaking terms do not only yield gaps in the spectra, but under certain circumstances, namely in the case of residual ground-state symmetries, render the originally quadratic (in the wave vector) spin-wave dispersion linear.

The coincidental detection of the gravitational wave event GW 170817 and the associated gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A marked the advent of multi-messenger astronomy and represented a milestone in the study of GRBs. In this context, the launch of SVOM in mid-2022, with its two wide-field high-energy instruments ECLAIRs and GRM, will foster the possibilities of coincidental transient detection with gravitational waves and gamma-rays events. The purpose of this paper is to assess the ability of SVOM/ECLAIRs to detect and quickly characterize high-energy transients in the local Universe (z<0.3), and to discuss the contribution of this instrument to multi-messenger astronomy and to gamma-ray burst(GRB) astrophysics in the 2020s. A list of local HE transients, along with their main characteristics, is constructed through an extensive literature survey. The detectability of these transients with ECLAIRs is assessed with detailed simulations using tools developed for the SVOM mission, including a GEANT4 simulation of the energy response and a simulated trigger algorithm representative of the onboard trigger algorithm. The SNR for almost all detections will be sufficiently high to allow the on-board ECLAIRs trigger algorithm to detect and derive the localisation of the transient, transmitting it to the SVOM satellite and ground-based instruments. Coupled with the anti-solar pointing strategy of SVOM, this will enable an optimal follow-up of the events, allowing the observation of their afterglows, supernovae/kilonovae counterparts, and host galaxies. We conclude the paper with a discussion of the unique contribution expected from SVOM and of the possibility of simultaneous GW detection for each type of transient in our sample.

As a consequence of the approximate spin-valley symmetry in graphene, the ground state of electrons in graphene at charge neutrality is a particular SU(4) quantum-Hall ferromagnet to minimize their exchange energy. If only the Coulomb interaction is taken into account, this ferromagnet can appeal either to the spin degree of freedom or equivalently to the valley pseudo-spin degree of freedom. This freedom in choice is then limited by subleading energy scales that explicitly break the SU(4) symmetry, the simplest of which is given by the Zeeman effect that orients the spin in the direction of the magnetic field. In addition, there are also valley symmetry breaking terms that can arise from short-range interactions or electron-phonon couplings. Here, we build upon the phase diagram, which has been obtained by Kharitonov [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{85}, 155439 (2012)], in order to identify the different skyrmions that are compatible with these types of quantum-Hall ferromagnets. Similarly to the ferromagnets, the skyrmions at charge neutrality are described by the $\text{Gr}(2,4)$ Grassmannian at the center, which allows us to construct the skyrmion spinors. The different skyrmion types are then obtained by minimizing their energy within a variational approach, with respect to the remaining free parameters that are not fixed by the requirement that the skyrmion at large distances from their center must be compatible with the ferromagnetic background. We show that the different skyrmion types have a clear signature in the local, sublattice-resolved, spin magnetization, which is in principle accessible in scanning-tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy.

The SVOM mission under development will carry various instruments, and in particular the coded-mask telescope ECLAIRs, with a large field of view of about 2 sr, operating in the 4--150 keV energy band, whose goal is to detect high energy transients such as gamma-ray bursts. The trigger software onboard ECLAIRs will search for new hard X-ray sources appearing in the sky, as well as peculiar behaviour (e.g. strong outbursts) from known sources, in order to repoint the satellite to perform follow-up observations with its onboard narrow field of view instruments. The presence of known X-ray sources must be disentangled from the appearance of new sources. This is done with the help of an onboard source catalogue, which we present in this paper. As an input we use catalogues of X-ray sources detected by Swift/BAT and MAXI/GSC and we study the influence of the sources on ECLAIRs' background level and on the quality of the sky image reconstruction process. We show that the influence of the sources depends on the pointing direction on the sky, on the energy band and on the exposure time. In the Galactic centre, the known sources contribution largely dominates the cosmic X-ray background, which is, on the contrary, the main background in sky regions empty of strong sources. We also demonstrate the need to clean the sources contributions in order to maintain a low noise level in the sky images and to keep the threshold applied for the detection of new sources as low as possible, without introducing false triggers. The transition from prompt to the afterglow emission is one of the most exciting and least understood phases in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Correlations among optical, X-ray and gamma-ray emission in GRBs have been explored, to attempt to answer whether the earliest optical emission comes from internal and/or external shocks. We present optical photometric observations of GRB 180325A collected with the TAROT and RATIR ground-based telescopes. These observations show two strong optical flashes with separate peaks at $\sim50\;$s and $\sim120\;$s, followed by a temporally extended optical emission. We also present X-rays and gamma-ray observations of GRB 180325A, detected by the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and X-ray Telescope (XRT), on the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory, which both observed a narrow flash at $\sim80\;$s. We show that the prompt gamma- and X-ray early emission shares similar temporal and spectral features consistent with internal dissipation within the relativistic outflow (e.g. by internal shocks or magnetic reconnection), while the early optical flashes are likely generated by the reverse shock that decelerates the ejecta as it sweeps up the external medium., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Ultra-long Gamma-Ray Bursts (ulGRBs) are Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with an unusually long emission in X and gamma rays, reaching durations of thousands of seconds. They could form a specific class of high-energy transient events, whose origin is still under discussion. The current sample of known ulGRBs consists of a few tens of events which have been detected so far by the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) aboard the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and some other instruments. The SVOM mission which is scheduled to begin operations after 2021 could help to detect and observe more ulGRBs thanks to its soft gamma-ray telescope ECLAIRs. After an introduction on ulGRBs and the SVOM mission, we present the results of our simulations on the capabilities of ECLAIRs to detect ulGRBs. First we use the sample of ulGRBs detected by Swift/BAT and simulate these events through a model of the instrument and the prototype trigger software that will be implemented onboard ECLAIRs. Then we present a study of the ECLAIRs capabilities to detect a synthetic population of ulGRBs built by transporting the ulGRBs detected by Swift/BAT to higher redshifts. Finally we give an estimate of the ulGRB rate expected to be detected by ECLAIRs and show that ECLAIRs can detect at least as much ulGRBs as BAT., Comment: Published in Experimental Astronomy; 32 pages, 18 figures

The Space Variable Object Monitor (SVOM) is a forthcoming Chinese - French astrophysics space mission dedicated to the study of Gamma-ray bursts and high-energy transients. ECLAIRs, a wide-field hard X-ray coded mask imager, is the leading instrument for the transient detection and their first localisation. The sensitivity of such instruments is usually limited by the background, either of instrumental or astrophysical origin. Detailed estimations of the background are obtained by simulating the interaction of particles with the matter using, in the present case, the GEANT4 Monte-Carlo toolkit. However, this is a time consuming process, especially when it is needed to carry out all possible geometrical and orbital configurations. Instead, we present a much faster method that allows computing the background in either a static or dynamic (time dependent) way. The method is based on the preliminary calculation of a large particle database using the GEANT4 toolkit followed by a selection process based on the incoming direction and energy of the particles. This approach is as accurate as direct Monte-Carlo methods, while it reduces the computation time by a factor of $10^3 - 10^4$ for our application. We discuss the need for very large detection planes for the detection of hard X-ray transients in the multi-messenger era that started with the quasi-simultaneous detection of GRB~170817A by \textit{Fermi}/GBM and \textit{INTEGRAL}/SPI on one hand and the gravitational waves event GW 170817, detected by the LVC collaboration, on the other hand. Then, we present a brief survey of current and future instruments and their expected sensitivity, pointing the fact that the gain in the number of GRBs is achieved by future projects thanks to their larger field of view rather than to their larger effective area. Based on our experience with \textit{SVOM}/ECLAIRs, we then address various problems associated with the realization of very large detection planes (\mbox{$\ge 1 \mathrm m^{2}$}), and we demonstrate that CdTe detectors are well suited for this task. We conclude with a discussion of some key parameters that must be taken into account in the realization of instruments based on these detectors. We consider the helical edge state of a Quantum Spin Hall insulator, connected between two leads, and irradiated by a monochromatic and circularly polarized electromagnetic wave. The photocurrent generated within the helical edge state is studied as function of the characteristics of the electromagnetic radiation and electronic doping of the edge state. We focus on the effect of the leads on the photocurrent. Ultra-long Gamma-Ray Bursts are a class of high energy transients lasting several hours. Their exact nature is still elusive, and several models have been proposed to explain them. Because of the limited coverage of wide field gamma-ray detectors, the study of their prompt phase with sensitive narrow-field X-ray instruments could help in understanding the origin of ultra-long GRBs. However, the observers face a true problem in rapidly activating follow-up observations, due to the challenging identification of an ultra-long GRB before the end of the prompt phase. We present here a comparison of the prompt properties available after a few tens of minutes of a sample of ultra-long GRBs and normal long GRBs, looking for prior indicators of the long duration. We find that there is no such clear prior indicator of the duration of the burst. We also found that statistically, a burst lasting at least 10 and 20 minutes has respectively 28% and 50% probability to be an ultralong event. These findings point towards a common central engine for normal long and ultra-long GRBs, with the collapsar model privileged., Comment: 7 pages, 2 color figures. Accepted for publication into MNRAS
