Aim This study assessed the association between exposure to alcohol adverts on social media and alcohol use among university students in Uganda since alcohol consumption has severe effects, especially in countries with weak regulations for alcohol marketing. Methods In total, 996 undergraduate students at Makerere University responded to a questionnaire assessing exposure to alcohol advertising on social media (independent variable) and alcohol use (dependent variable). Adjusted multinomial logistic regression was used to analyse data. Results One in ten students reported hazardous drinking, while three in ten students were low-risk drinkers. Most students (70.1%) reported low exposure to alcohol adverts on social media, followed by high exposure (12.1%), and 17.8% reported no exposure. A key finding was that exposure to alcohol adverts on social media was significantly associated with alcohol use, especially the high exposure and hazardous drinking (odds ratio = 12.62, 95% confidence interval: 4.43–35.96). Students reporting high exposure to alcohol adverts on social media also had higher odds of low-risk drinking (odds ratio = 3.70, 95% confidence interval: 1.88–7.27) than those with low exposure (odds ratio = 1.77, 95% confidence interval: 1.09–2.87), in reference to no exposure. Conclusion Among Ugandan university students, exposure to alcohol adverts on social media is common and associated with alcohol use, in a dose–response manner. Introduction: Hand hygiene compliance is one of the key performance indicators for infection prevention and control programmes, patient safety and quality of health services. WHO guidelines and the patient centred approach stress the need to increase patient involvement in hand hygiene promotion in healthcare settings. Patients' and health care workers' perspectives are critical for developing interventions to foster patient involvement in promoting hand hygiene. This study explored perceptions of health care workers and patients towards patients' involvement in hand hygiene promotion. Methods: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted in four health facilities: three public, and one private non-profit in central Uganda. We conducted key informant interviews (KIIs) with health care workers and focus group discussions (FGDs) with patients. Respondents were asked their views about a patient reminding a health care worker to practice hand hygiene and how best this can be done. Interviews were audio-recorded, and transcribed. Thematic content analysis was used. Results: We led seven FGDs grouped by sex (6 participants each), with patients from different units of the study health care facilities and 23 KIIs with the in-charges of the health care facilities, wards, and infection control committee members. The majority of the KIIs were in the age category 30 to 45 years (10/23), females (14/23), and 7/23 were nurses by cadre. For the FGD participants, the majority were aged 30 to 45 years (23/42), 24/42 were females, 21/42 had attained secondary education as their highest level of education and 21/42 were Catholics. The health care workers' and patients' views towards patients' participation in promoting hand hygiene among health care workers are presented according to the four themes that emerged: i) Patients reminding health care workers to practice hand hygiene was offensive; ii) Patients fear of negative response from health care workers, including being denied or receiving poor quality services; iii) Role of management in influencing hand hygiene (patient reminding a health care workers to wash hands could be acceptable in private health facilities compared to the public ones); iv) Suggestions on how patients' reminders to health care workers can be done, included empowering patients to do the reminders in a friendly and polite approach to the HCW. Conclusion: Patients are reluctant to remind health workers to practice hand hygiene, because they feel it is confrontational and embarrassing, while health care workers find it offensive. Patient involvement seems to threaten patient-provider relationships. However patient empowerment was reported to be critical in promoting it and this is in-line with the hand hygiene guidelines. Background Shop attendants are urban dwellers who may spend significant periods in sedentary lifestyles exposing them to non-communicable diseases. This study assessed the physical activity levels and sociodemographic factors associated with meeting the WHO recommended physical activity levels among shop attendants in Mbarara municipality, Uganda. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study among 301 shop attendants. We used the global physical activity questionnaire to assess participants' physical activity levels. Modified Poisson regression was used to assess the sociodemographic factors associated with meeting recommended physical activity levels. Results Of the 301 participants, 234 (77.7%) met the WHO physical activity recommendations, especially through work-related physical activity of moderate intensity 194 (64.5%). The median weekly duration of all moderate-intensity physical activity was 180 min (IQR=90 to 360). The median daily sedentary time was 300 min (IQR=300 to 360). Being male (adjusted prevalence ratio=1.33, 95% CI 1.17 to 1.51) was significantly associated with meeting recommended physical activity levels. Conclusion The physical activity levels among shop attendants were high and were mostly achieved through work-related activities of moderate intensity, with males being more likely to meet recommended physical activity levels. This article explores the history and evolution of Environmental Health in Uganda under four key themes: training and practice; research; governance, policy and regulatory framework; and challenges. The article also describes the future of the profession. Through a review of documents and key informant interviews, it is noted that Environmental Health in Uganda dates back to colonial times when the country was affected by diseases including plague, trypanosomiasis and small pox. Concerted efforts were advanced to train cadres that would improve the sanitation status and address the prevailing disease burden. Over several decades, the Environmental Health profession has evolved in many areas of training, practice, research and governance, policy and legal framework amidst several challenges. The future of Environmental Health in Uganda will require more advanced training and research, broadened practice, and streamlined governance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The burden of occupational diseases and injuries is high in developing countries due to several challenges including poor regulatory frameworks. To explore the status of occupational safety and health (OSH) policies and related implementation challenges in Uganda, we reviewed OSH regulations and conducted key informant interviews with stakeholders. We found that the existing OSH laws were largely outdated compared to the current needs of workplaces. Challenges affecting implementation are related to: gaps in the legal framework, low public awareness about OSH, poor planning, and limited human capacity, transparency, and accountability. Measures to address these gaps including training, upgrading OSH laws and policies, and prioritization are warranted to improve the status of OSH in Uganda. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
