1. Increasing landscape heterogeneity as a win–win solution to manage trade-offs in biological control of crop and woodland pests

Abstract: Abstract Agriculture and forestry cover more than 75% of Europe, and invertebrate pests are a costly challenge for these two economic sectors. Landscape management is increasingly promoted as a solution to enhance biological pest control, but little is known on its effects on adjacent crop fields and woodlands. This study aims to explore the effect of the proportion of woodlands and permanent grasslands as well as crop diversity on biological pest control simultaneously in cereals fields and woodland patches, in south-western France. We used different types of sentinel prey as well as bird and carabid community metrics to assess biological pest control potential in these two ecosystems. We first show that land cover variables influence biological pest control both in cereal fields and woodland patches, but have antagonistic effects in the two ecosystems. Although results vary according to the biological control indicator considered, we show that increasing landscape heterogeneity represents a valuable solution to manage trade-offs and promote higher average predation rates across forests and cereal fields. Our study therefore calls for more integrative studies to identify landscape management strategies that enable nature-based solutions across ecosystems.

2. Combining organic and conservation agriculture to restore biodiversity? Insights from innovative farms in Belgium and their impacts on carabids and spiders

Abstract: Conservation and organic agriculture are two alternative crop management strategies associated with environmental impact reduction, leading theoretically to more biodiversity and higher ecological functioning, underpinning better ecosystem service delivery. The combination of these two farming strategies is increasingly seen as an opportunity to mitigate shortcomings of each of them taken individually. However, combining organic and conservation agriculture is undeniably challenging, since it leaves no curative option (neither synthetic pesticides nor soil plowing) for pest control (phytophagous, pathogens, and weeds). Hence, the latter must be ensured by effective restoration of predatory communities. The present research investigated the potential of combining organic and conservation agriculture to support two major ground-dwelling natural enemy communities: carabids and spiders. We used pitfall traps to sample these two communities in paired adjacent cereal fields conducted under organic-conservation (OC) and conventional (CV) agriculture in Belgium. Community assemblages were significantly different across system types, both in terms of species diversity and functional trait diversity. OC parcels showed higher alpha and beta species diversities for both carabids and spiders and species composition differed between OC and CV parcels. OC systems were associated with higher variation of species assemblages among parcels than CV systems Functional traits also differed across system types for both groups. We found more herbivorous and granivore carabids in OC parcels, and more predator species in CV parcels. We found larger spiders, more hunting spiders and more wetland spiders in OC parcels, whereas we found more web weavers and more forest spiders in CV ones. Functional diversity was higher in OC parcels for carabids, but not for spiders. In brief, OC parcels supported more diverse communities, both taxonomically and functionally. These outcomes show that OC systems are promising systems to support these natural enemy communities. Further studies should assess whether combining organic and conservation agricultural enables sufficient pest control levels to achieve high levels of food production and farmers income.

3. Tree diversity drives associational resistance to herbivory at both forest edge and interior

Abstract: Abstract Tree diversity is increasingly acknowledged as an important driver of insect herbivory. However, there is still a debate about the direction of associational effects that can range from associational resistance (i.e., less damage in mixed stands than in monocultures) to the opposite, associational susceptibility. Discrepancies among published studies may be due to the overlooked effect of spatially dependent processes such as tree location within forests. We addressed this issue by measuring crown defoliation and leaf damage made by different guilds of insect herbivores on oaks growing among conspecific versus heterospecific neighbors at forest edges versus interior, in two closed sites in SW France forests. Overall, oaks were significantly less defoliated among heterospecific neighbors (i.e., associational resistance), at both forest edge and interior. At the leaf level, guild diversity and leaf miner herbivory significantly increased with tree diversity regardless of oak location within stands. Other guilds showed no clear response to tree diversity or oak location. We showed that herbivore response to tree diversity varied among insect feeding guilds but not between forest edges and interior, with inconsistent patterns between sites. Importantly, we show that oaks were more defoliated in pure oak plots than in mixed plots at both edge and forest interior and that, on average, defoliation decreased with increasing tree diversity from one to seven species. We conclude that edge conditions could be interacting with tree diversity to regulate insect defoliation, but future investigations are needed to integrate them into the management of temperate forests, notably by better understanding the role of the landscape context.

4. Simulating seasonal drivers of aphid dynamics to explore agronomic scenarios

Abstract: Abstract With the regulation of pesticides in European agricultural landscapes, it is important to understand how pest populations respond to climate and landscape variables in the absence of pesticides at different spatial–temporal scales. While models have described individual biological processes, few have simulated complete life cycles at such scales. We developed a spatially explicit simulation model of the dynamics of the bird cherry–oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi) in a pesticide‐free simulated landscape using data from an agricultural landscape located in southwest France. Using GLMMs, we ran two statistical methods, one at the crop level, focusing on aphid densities within each crop individually (wheat and its regrowth, corn, and sorghum), and another at the landscape level where aphid densities were not differentiated by crops. For each season, we analyzed how temperature, immigration, and habitat availability impacted on aphid densities. Predictors of aphid densities varied between crops and between seasons, and models for each individual crop resulted in better predictions of aphid densities than landscape‐level models. Aphid immigration and temperature were important predictors of aphid densities across models but varied in the directionality of their effects. Moreover, landscape composition was a significant predictor in only four of the nine seasonal crop models. This highlights the complexity of pest–landscape interactions and the necessity of considering fine spatial–temporal scales to identify key factors that influence aphid densities, essential for developing future regulation methods. We used our model to explore the potential effects of two agronomic scenarios on aphid densities: (1) replacement of corn with sorghum, where increases in available sorghum led to the dilution of aphid populations in sorghum in spring and their concentration in summer, and (2) abandonment of pastures for wheat fields, which had no significant effect on aphid densities at the landscape scale. By simulating potential future agronomic practices, we can identify the risks of such changes and inform policy and decision‐makers to better anticipate pest dynamics in the absence of pesticides. This approach can be applied to other systems where agronomic and land cover data are available, and to other pest species for which biological processes are described in the literature.

5. Wooded Semi-Natural Habitats Complement Permanent Grasslands in Supporting Wild Bee Diversity in Agricultural Landscapes

Abstract: Loss of semi-natural habitats (SNH) in agricultural landscapes affects wild bees, often negatively. However, how bee communities respond varies and is still unclear. To date, few studies have used precise descriptors to understand these effects. Our aim was to understand the respective and complementary influences of different wooded and herbaceous habitats on wild bee communities. We selected thirty 500-m radius landscapes on a gradient of a percentage of wooded SNH in south-western France. At each landscape, we sampled wild bees in spring 2016 and plants in spring 2015 and 2016 at the forest edge, in a hedgerow, and in a permanent grassland. Pollen carried by the most abundant bee species was collected and identified. Using beta diversity indices, we showed that wild bee community composition differs between the three SNH types, and especially between herbaceous and wooded SNH. Based on Jacobs’ selection index, we showed that pollen of some plant species recorded in wooded SNH are preferentially selected by wild bees. Studying the impact of the loss of each SNH type on the global bee-pollen interaction network, we found that wooded SNH contributed to its resilience, enabling specific plant–bee interactions. Overall, our results underline the non-negligible contribution of wooded SNH to the diversity of wild bees in agricultural landscapes, and thus the importance of maintaining different types of SNH.

Abstract: The governance of ecosystem services (ES) has been predominantly thought of in terms of market or state-based instruments. Comparatively, collective action mechanisms have rarely been considered. This paper addresses this gap by proposing a conceptual framework that brings together ES, social interdependencies, and collective action thinking. We use an ES conceptual lens to highlight social interdependencies among people so as to reflect on existing or potential collective actions among them. This framework can also contribute to increasing people's awareness of their mutual interdependencies and thereby fostering, framing, or enriching collective action, in ways that take into account the diversity and complexity of ecological processes underlying human activities. Our approach can contribute in particular to agroecological transitions that require landscape level innovations and coordination mechanisms among land users and managers. The framework distinguishes three types of social interdependencies: (i) between ES beneficiaries and ES providers, (ii) among beneficiaries, and (iii) among providers. These social interdependencies are in turn analyzed according to four main dimensions that are critical for collective action: (i) cognitive framing of interdependencies, (ii) levels of organization, (iii) formal and informal institutions, and (iv) power relations. Finally, we propose a strategy to turn this framework into action in contexts of participatory action research, a strategy grounded on a number of methodological principles and tools that convey complexity and increase people's awareness of interdependencies in agrarian social-ecological systems.

7. Tree Diversity Limits the Impact of an Invasive Forest Pest.

Abstract: The impact of invasive herbivore species may be lower in more diverse plant communities due to mechanisms of associational resistance. According to the "resource concentration hypothesis" the amount and accessibility of host plants is reduced in diverse plant communities, thus limiting the exploitation of resources by consumers. In addition, the "natural enemy hypothesis" suggests that richer plant assemblages provide natural enemies with more complementary resources and habitats, thus promoting top down regulation of herbivores. We tested these two hypotheses by comparing crown damage by the invasive Asian chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) on chestnut trees (Castanea sativa) in pure and mixed stands in Italy. We estimated the defoliation on 70 chestnut trees in 15 mature stands sampled in the same region along a gradient of tree species richness ranging from one species (chestnut monocultures) to four species (mixtures of chestnut and three broadleaved species). Chestnut defoliation was significantly lower in stands with higher tree diversity. Damage on individual chestnut trees decreased with increasing height of neighboring, heterospecific trees. These results suggest that conservation biological control method based on tree species mixtures might help to reduce the impact of the Asian chestnut gall.

8. Lack of genetic differentiation between contrasted overwintering strategies of a major pest predator Episyrphus balteatus (Diptera: Syrphidae): implications for biocontrol.

Abstract: Winter ecology of natural enemies has a great influence on the level and efficiency of biological control at spring. The hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus (DeGeer) (Diptera: Syrphidae) is one of the most important natural predators of crop aphids in Europe. Three different overwintering strategies coexist in this species which makes it a good model in order to study ecologically-based speciation processes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether E. balteatus populations with alternative overwintering strategies are genetically differentiated. To that aim, we developed 12 specific microsatellite markers and evaluated the level of neutral genetic differentiation between E. balteatus field populations that overwinter in the three different ways described in this species (i.e. migration, local overwintering at a pre-imaginal stage, and local overwintering at adult stage). Results showed a lack of neutral genetic differentiation between individuals with different overwintering strategies although there are strong ecological differences between them. All pair-wise FST values are below 0.025 and non-significant, and Bayesian clustering showed K=1 was the most likely number of genetic clusters throughout our sample. The three overwintering strategies form one unique panmictic population. This suggests that all the individuals may have genetic material for the expression of different overwintering phenotypes, and that their commitment in one particular overwintering strategy may depend on environmental and individual factors. Consequently, the prevalence of the different overwintering strategies would be potentially modified by landscape engineering and habitat management which could have major implications for biological control.

The transition to providing multiple services within an agroecosystem is a starting point for heightened multifunctionality, however, there is still hesitation among stakeholders about moving towards multi-service systems, largely because of the lack of knowledge linking productivity and multifunctionality. We reason that much of this reticence could be overcome through a better understanding of stakeholder requirements and innovative transdisciplinary research extended in the dimensions of time and space. We assembled experts in France to identify priority research questions for co-constructing projects with stakeholders. We identified 18 key questions, as well as the obstacles that hinder their resolution and propose potential solutions for tackling these obstacles. We illustrate that research into agroecosystem multifunctionality and service production must be a hugely collaborative effort and needs to integrate knowledge from different sectors and communities. Promoting dialogue, standardization and data-sharing would enhance transdisciplinary progress. Biodiversity is highlighted as a key factor to explore and incorporate into modelling approaches, but major advances must be made in the understanding of dynamic changes in the biodiversity-function-service nexus across landscapes. Resolving these research questions will allow us to translate knowledge into decision objectives, identify adaptation and tipping points in agroecosystems and develop social-ecological economic pathways that are adaptive over time.

Abstract: 1.Biological pest control is known to depend on landscape heterogeneity. However, such relationship shows irregular pattern and seems influenced by local farming practices and natural enemies that overwinter within crop fields. The objective of this study was to assess the contribution of emerging natural enemies in spring to biological control, and their response to the interaction between landscape heterogeneity and farming intensity. 2.We monitored the overwintering insect community using emergence traps and measured the local potential pest predation using prey cards in 30 cereal fields, in spring in France. Study fields were selected along a landscape heterogeneity gradient and farming practices were recorded. 3.None of the ten emerging taxa influenced predation of lepidopteran eggs or weed seeds. On the ground, aphid predation was positively correlated with emerging carabid beetles. In foliage, aphid predation was negatively correlated with emerging parasitoids. Overall, the community of natural enemies that overwinter within crop fields seemed to benefit from lower crop diversity and higher edge density in combination with higher farming intensities. This suggest that they represent a subset of species adapted to. This study highlights a large broad taxonomic panel of emerging natural enemies and their potential local pest predation. peerReviewed

Abstract: International audience; Context: Wild pollinators depend on floral resources available in the landscape, partly provided by mass flowering crops (MFCs), such as rapeseed or sunflower. MFCs are however often grown conventionally, implying insecticide use, with potential negative effects on pollinators.Objectives: To understand whether and to what extent these crops could contribute to the maintenance of pollinator populations, we investigated the inter-annual correlation between MFC resources and the reproduction of cavity-nesting pollinators (solitary bees and wasps) at a national scale.Methods: We studied a standardized citizen science dataset, in which farmers collected data on the abundance of sealed tubes in trap nests, between 2012 and 2017, in nearly 600 fields distributed across France. We modelled the relation between nesting and landscape resources of the current and previous year, taking local farming practices into account.Results: Pollinator nesting was positively correlated with the quantity of rapeseed floral resources the year preceding observations, as well as with the area of permanent meadows. On the contrary, we found more variable relations with sunflower floral resources, depending on the type of sealing material, hence likely on the phenology of pollinators. Our models also confirm that local practices should be accounted for when assessing the influence of the landscape context, although their effects were difficult to interpret.Conclusions: Solitary bee and wasp reproduction is likely to be positively and durably affected by rapeseed cover. Moderate areas of rapeseed may help maintain pollinators, in combination with semi-natural habitats, which provide more diverse and stable food and nesting sites.

16. Converting cropping systems into seasonal habitat functionality reveals the hump-shaped responses of carabid beetles to agricultural management

Abstract: Understanding effects on the huge diversity of cropping systems on local biodiversity is challenging but necessary to implement agroecological systems. Through a functional approach, the translation of cropping systems into resource and disturbance gradients is promising to decipher the relationship between cropping systems and biodiversity but has never been implemented for arthropods.To investigate contributions of resource and disturbance gradients arising from cropping systems vs environmental context (regional effect, meteorological conditions and landscape characteristics) on beneficial arthropod communities, we used a dataset collected in 60 crop fields from three French areas over a five-years period. It includes all farmers interventions, crop sequences, meteorological data, landscape composition and carabid samplings.We found that the environmental context contributed to about 75% of explained carabid variations on average, while resource and disturbance gradients contributed to about 25% of explained carabid variations. The resource and disturbance gradients were particularly important in winter and spring preceding the spring-summer period to determine carabid variations.Moreover, we identified thresholds above which resource and disturbance gradients start being beneficial or detrimental for carabids. For example, a Treatment Frequency Index above 2.07 in spring decreased the total activity density of carabids during the spring-summer period.Synthesis and application. While implementing for the first time a functional approach to understand the effects of different facets of cropping systems on arthropods, our study also allows us to identify periods and thresholds above which specific practices affect carabids. The identification of such thresholds can guide the provision of recommendations for policy, stakeholders and farmers about how to reduce cropping systems’ impact on arthropods.

Abstract: International audience; Given the negative environmental effects of conventional agricultural techniques, the need for biodiversity-friendly agriculture systems that rely more on ecosystem services and less on chemical inputs is becoming increasingly urgent. In this paper, we focus on crop protection strategies that are alternatives to the use of pesticides. Diversification of the plant component of agricultural areas at different space and time scales has been presented as a powerful socio-economic and agro-ecological mechanism for the sustainable control of pests. Our interdisciplinary group of scientific experts examined the literature on the ecological effects of plant diversification on pests and their natural enemies, as well as the social science literature on the conditions for farmers to adopt the corresponding practices, to assess the potential offered by plant diversification.We developed a conceptual framework that connects the agro-ecological and socio-economic components of an agricultural landscape in a dynamic loop accounting for interactions among elements at different spatial and temporal scales and their feedback effects. This article presents this framework and illustrates its application to the case of wheat production and protection. By explicitly connecting each level of agro-ecological organization with the potential socio-economic drivers and limitations underpinning the adoption and implementation of plant diversification in landscapes, this framework makes it possible to ana yse the synergies and antagonisms between different modes of diversification and the conditions of their deployment. Exploring this framework is a prerequisite to the identification of opportunities and key feed-back loops for designing diversification strategies that unlock the agro-ecological potential of f uture production systems. We conclude that there is a need for interdisciplinary research in experimental landscapes involving farmers and other local stakeholders to design sustainable future agricultural landscapes that deliver high levels of biological control services..

Abstract: International audience; Conservation biological control (CBC) has been an active research topic for the last two decades and is now one of the key ways being explored to develop agroecological production systems. Using broad concepts and indicators, recent reviews and meta-analyses have highlighted major inconsistencies in the responses of CBC to landscape structure, revealing their context-dependent nature. To decipher these relations, we reviewed the scientific literature (50 articles) using (1) an original ontology allowing us to navigate across the different terms and concepts used in this literature and (2) a network-based methodology to describe the scattering, completeness, and generalizability of scientific knowledge on CBC. An interactive version of this network is available online. Our results highlight the strong information scattering caused by the variety of indicators used to describe both landscape structure and CBC. We observe trade-offs between the use of coarse concepts classically used in meta-analysis (e.g., landscape complexity) and the non-convergence of results (ambiguity). The network analysis points out consistently less information ambiguity when considering sub-networks focused on trophic chains than in the full information network, without losing connectance. We suggest that effects of landscape structure may be different between trophic chains because of specific selection pressures associated with cropping systems. Our novel review procedure offers a relatively simple but powerful complementary approach to classical meta-analysis to explore ecological patterns. It highlights that crop trophic chain probably represents the adequate ecological unit to investigate the landscape-CBC relationship. Designing pest suppressive landscapes while favoring farmland biodiversity will imply considering multiple crop trophic chains responding differently to landscape structure. Therefore, we recommend assessing the level of CBC at both crop field and landscape scales to inform decisions on the best individual or collective strategy to adopt.

Abstract: 1. Increasing landscape heterogeneity by restoring semi-natural elements to reverse farmland biodiversity declines is not always economically feasible or acceptable to farmers due to competition for land. We hypothesized that increasing the hetero-geneity of the crop mosaic itself, hereafter referred to as crop heterogeneity, can have beneficial effects on within-field plant diversity .2. Using a unique multi-country dataset from a cross-continent collaborative project covering 1,451 agricultural fields within 432 landscapes in Europe and Canada, we assessed the relative effects of compositional and configurational crop heteroge-neity on within-field plant diversity components. We also examined how these relationships were modulated by the position within the field. 3. We found strong positive effects of configurational crop heterogeneity on within-field plant alpha and gamma diversity in field interiors. These effects were as high as the effect of semi-natural cover. In field borders, effects of crop heterogeneity were limited to alpha diversity. We suggest that a heterogeneous crop mosaic may overcome the high negative impact of management practices on plant diversity in field interiors, whereas in field borders, where plant diversity is already high, landscape effects are more limited. 4. Synthesis and applications. Our study shows that increasing configurational crop heterogeneity is beneficial to within-field plant diversity. It opens up a new effec-tive and complementary way to promote farmland biodiversity without taking land out of agricultural production. We therefore recommend adopting manipulation of crop heterogeneity as a specific, effective management option in future policy measures, perhaps adding to agri-environment schemes, to contribute to the con-servation of farmland plant diversity. Abstract: International audience; Farming intensity and landscape heterogeneity influence agrobiodiversity and associated ecological functions. The relative contributions of these agroecosystem components to agricultural production remain unclear because of inter-relations and weather-dependant variations. Using a structural equation modelling approach, we estimated direct and indirect contributions of farming intensity (soil management, pesticide use and fertilisation) and landscape heterogeneity (of semi-natural covers and crop mosaic) to cereal crop production, in 54 fields (mostly wheat), in two years (24 and 30 fields). Indirect effects were evaluated through agrobiodiversity (carabid and plant communities) and ecological functions (pollination and pest control). In 2016, farming intensity had the largest direct positive effect on cereal crop yield, followed by agrobiodiversity (74% of the farming intensity impact) and ecological functions. However, the direct benefits of farming intensity were halved due to negative indirect effects, as farming intensity negatively affected within-field biodiversity and ecological functions. Overall, agrobiodiversity and farming intensity had equal net contributions to cereal crop yields, while heterogeneity of the crop mosaic enhanced biodiversity. In 2017, neither higher farming intensity nor agrobiodiversity and ecological functions could lift cereal production, which suffered from unfavourable meteorological conditions. Semi-natural habitats supported agrobiodiversity. Our study suggests that a reduction of farming intensity combined with higher heterogeneity of crop mosaic can enhance the benefits of ecological functions towards crop production. Semi-natural covers seem to play an essential role in the face of climatic events, by supporting agrobiodiversity and the potential resilience of the agroecosystem functioning.

Abstract: International audience; Context Agroecosystems are dynamic, with yearly changing proportions of crops. Explicit consideration of this temporal heterogeneity is required to decipher population and community patterns but remains poorly studied. Objectives We evaluated the impact on the activity-density of two dominant carabid species (Poecilus cupreus and Anchomenus dorsalis) of (1) local crop, current year landscape composition, and their interaction, and (2) inter-annual changes in landscape composition due to crop rotations. Methods Carabids were sampled using pitfall-traps in 188 ﬁelds of winter cereals and oilseed rape in three agricultural areas of western France contrasting in their spatial heterogeneity. We summarized landscape composition in the current and previous years in a multi-scale perspective, using buffers of increasing size around sampling locations. Results Both species were more abundant in oilseed rape, and in landscapes with a higher proportion of oilseed rape in the previous year. P. cupreus abundance was negatively inﬂuenced by oilseed rape proportion in the current year landscape in winter cereals and positively by winter cereal proportion in oilseed rape. A. dorsalis was globally impacted at ﬁner scales than P. cupreus. Conclusions Resource concentration and dilution-concentration processes jointly appear to cause transient dynamics of population abundance and distribution among habitat patches. Inter-patch movements across years appear to be key drivers of carabids’ survival and distribution, in response to crop rotation. Therefore, the explicit consideration of the spatiotemporal dynamics of landscape composition can allow future studies to better evidence ecological processes behind observed species patterns and help developing new management strategies.

Abstract: Agricultural landscape homogenization has detrimental effects on biodiversity and key ecosystem services. Increasing agricultural landscape heterogeneity by increasing seminatural cover can help to mitigate biodiversity loss. However, the amount of seminatural cover is generally low and difficult to increase in many intensively managed agricultural landscapes. We hypothesized that increasing the heterogeneity of the crop mosaic itself (hereafter “crop heterogeneity”) can also have positive effects on biodiversity. In 8 contrasting regions of Europe and North America, we selected 435 landscapes along independent gradients of crop diversity and mean field size. Within each landscape, we selected 3 sampling sites in 1, 2, or 3 crop types. We sampled 7 taxa (plants, bees, butterflies, hoverflies, carabids, spiders, and birds) and calculated a synthetic index of multitrophic diversity at the landscape level. Increasing crop heterogeneity was more beneficial for multitrophic diversity than increasing seminatural cover. For instance, the effect of decreasing mean field size from 5 to 2.8 ha was as strong as the effect of increasing seminatural cover from 0.5 to 11%. Decreasing mean field size benefited multitrophic diversity even in the absence of seminatural vegetation between fields. Increasing the number of crop types sampled had a positive effect on landscape-level multitrophic diversity. However, the effect of increasing crop diversity in the landscape surrounding fields sampled depended on the amount of seminatural cover. Our study provides large-scale, multitrophic, cross-regional evidence that increasing crop heterogeneity can be an effective way to increase biodiversity in agricultural landscapes without taking land out of agricultural production. Abstract: Bats and birds are key providers of ecosystem services in forests. How climate and habitat jointly shape their communities is well studied, but whether biotic predictors from other trophic levels may improve bird and bat diversity models is less known, especially across large bioclimatic gradients. Here, we achieved multi-taxa surveys in 209 mature forests replicated in six European countries from Spain to Finland, to investigate the importance of biotic predictors (i.e. the abundance or activity of defoliating insects, spiders, earthworms and wild ungulates) for bat and bird taxonomic and functional diversity. We found that nine out of 12 bird and bat diversity metrics were best explained when biotic factors were added to models including climate and habitat variables, with a mean gain in explained variance of 38% for birds and 15% for bats. Tree functional diversity was the most important habitat predictor for birds, while bats responded more to understorey structure. The best biotic predictors for birds were spider abundance and defoliating insect activity, while only bat functional evenness responded positively to insect herbivory. Accounting for potential biotic interactions between bats, birds and other taxa of lower trophic levels will help to understand how environmental changes along large biogeographical gradients affect higher-level predator diversity in forest ecosystems.

Abstract: Context: While the concept of ecosystem services (ES) is well established in the scientific and policy arenas, its operationalization faces many challenges. Indeed, ES supply, demand and flow are related to ecological and social processes at multiple space and time scales, leading to complex interactions in the provision of multiple ES.Objectives: To develop a conceptual framework (CF) to facilitate the study and governance of multiple ES in agricultural social-ecological landscapes.Method: We examined the ecological and social literatures to identify how approaches at the landscape level contribute to a better understanding of ES supply, demand and flow in agricultural systems. After detailing our CF, we use a case study to illustrate how methods from different disciplines can be combined to operationalize our CF.Results: The literature suggests that the landscape level is likely to be the level of organization that will make it possible to (i) integrate different components of ES co-production, i.e. ecological processes, agricultural practices and social structures, (ii) understand interactions between stakeholders, including ES co-producers and beneficiaries, (iii) explicit ES trade-offs, i.e. social choices between ES.Conclusion: The production of multiple ES at the landscape level involves different types of interdependencies among ES co-producers and beneficiaries. These need to be addressed in concerted and integrated ways to achieve sustainable and equitable governance of agricultural landscapes.

Abstract: International audience; AbstractHabitat management is increasingly considered as a promising approach to favor the ecosystem service of biological control by enhancing natural enemies. However, habitat management, whether at local or landscape scale, remains very uncertain for farmers. Interactions between ecological processes and agricultural practices are indeed uncertain and site-specific, which makes implementation difficult. Thus, prospecting innovations based on habitat management may benefit from integrating local stakeholders and their knowledge. Our objective is to explore with both local and scientific stakeholders how they perceive agricultural practices, ecological processes, and services related to biological pest control and habitat management. We conducted a participatory Bayesian Network modeling approach with five stakeholders in Southwest France around apple orchard cultivation. We co-constructed such Bayesian Networks based on participants’ knowledge. We explored scenarios favoring natural enemies and habitat manipulation with each participant’s Bayesian Network. We compared how different stakeholders perceive the impact of each scenario on the biological control ecosystem service. Our results indicate that a landscape with a high proportion of semi-natural habitats does not translate into significant biological control for most participants even though some stakeholders perceive a significant impact on generalist predators’ activity within orchards. For these local stakeholders, habitat management at the orchard level such as inter-row vegetation seems currently more promising than at the landscape scale. Here, we show for the first time that the use of Bayesian modeling in a participatory manner can give precious insights into the most promising perspectives on habitat management at different scales. These different local perspectives suggest in particular that further dialogue between ecologists and local stakeholders should be sought about inter-row habitat management as the most promising practice to foster biological pest control and other ecosystem services.

Abstract: Control of crop pests by their natural enemies provides a valuable but poorly quantified ecosystem service. Many studies have addressed the multiple scale drivers of pest control but results from such studies appear variable, if not equivocal. The variability of landscape responses can result from its modulation factors by local practices, among which pesticide use intensity which affects pests and natural enemies and could be a major driver of natural pest control. In this study, we examine the relative contribution of pesticide use and landscape on biological control along a double gradient of pesticide use and landscape simplification. Eighty commercial fields were monitored during three years in four contrasted regions in France. Biocontrol in each field was estimated using three different types of sentinel preys (Ephestia kuehniellaeggs, Acyrthosiphon pisumaphids and Viola arvensis seeds). For each one, the interaction effects of landscape variables with the intensity of pesticide use on predation patterns were analyzed. The predation of weed seeds was negatively influenced by both pesticide use and landscape simplification, without interaction between the two scales. The predation of Ephestia was negatively influenced by landscape simplification only in case of low pesticide use intensity whereas the effect was positive in case of high pesticide use intensity. There was a significant interaction between pesticide use and the length of interfaces between crops and woods on the predation aphids. These landscape variables had a positive effects on the predation of aphids in case of low or medium pesticide use intensity but a negative effect in case of high pesticide use intensity. These results could indicate that in fields with low local pesticide use, landscape complexity enhance biological control whereas in intensive fields, the presence of semi-natural habitat could be unsuitable for natural enemies adapted to intensive situations.

Abstract: International audience; De nombreux travaux ont mis en évidence que les caractéristiques du paysage environnant les parcelles agricoles influencent les abondances d’ennemis naturels et le niveau de régulation biologiquedans les cultures. Les effets du paysage sur l’abondance de bio-agresseurs sont par contre encore peu étudiés. Les effets du paysage sur la régulation biologique sont parfois contradictoires, souventspécifiques aux sites et de ce fait encore peu généralisables. Des travaux récents suggèrent que ces variations de réponse peuvent résulter d’interactions entre gestion parcellaire et contexte paysager,avec des effets conditionnels du paysage selon le type de gestion parcellaire et inversement un effet de la gestion parcellaire qui peut être modulé par le contexte paysager des parcelles (par ex. Lefèbvre et al. 2016 ; Petit et al. 2017). De plus, on peut se demander si les échelles temporelles prises en compte (année ou au mieux rotation culturale) sont pertinentes ou suffisantes pour expliciter les services derégulation observés. La spécificité locale des réponses biologiques pourrait en effet être liée à des différences entre sites en termes de transformations des paysages sur les dernières décennies.Le projet PEERLESS a traité de la question des effets combinés de la gestion parcellaire et du contexte paysager sur l’abondance de bio-agresseurs (et/ou les dégâts causés) et sur le rendement de la culture. En grandes cultures, les relations entre pratiques agricoles parcellaires, métriques paysagères, abondance de bio-agresseurs et rendement de la culture ont été analysées par PLS-PM dans 74parcelles de blé (adventices, pucerons, criocères) et 42 parcelles de colza (adventices, dégâts des siliques). Les principaux enseignements de cette analyse sont que (1) l’abondance de bio-agresseursest globalement mal expliquée par les modèles malgré la prise en compte détaillée des pratiques de gestion parcellaire (R2 de 4 à 20% selon les bio-agresseurs) ; (2) l’abondance de bio-agresseurs a uneffet neutre ou négatif sur le rendement ; (3) le rendement est globalement bien expliqué, (R2 de 40 à 63%), notamment par les pratiques de gestion parcellaire ; (4) le poids du paysage sur l’abondance debio-agresseurs varie selon les bio-agresseurs et selon la pression phytosanitaire parcellaire. En vergers, on montre de la même façon que les effets du paysage sur l’abondance de carpocapse du pommiervarient en fonction de la pression phytosanitaire exercée dans le verger focal. La proportion de vergers dans le paysage diminue l’abondance des carpocapses dans les parcelles faiblement traitées mais n’a aucun effet dans les vergers traités intensivement. Le projet SEBIOPAG-PHYTO a analysé les variations des taux de prédation de 3 types de proies sentinelles (graines adventices, pucerons, oeufs de lépidoptère) dans 100 parcelles sur deux années consécutives en regard de la pression phytosanitaire parcellaire (IFT) et des caractéristiques du paysage environnant. Il en ressort que, pour tous les types de proies, nous avons systématiquement détecté une interaction significative paysage*IFT sur les taux de prédation malgré l’absence d’effet indépendant de la pression phytosanitaire dans la parcelle. La prédation augmente avec la proportion de culture hôte dans le paysage dans les situations locales de forte pression phytosanitaire. Par contre, dans les situations de faible pression phytosanitaire locale, la prédation décroit quand la proportion de culture hôte augmente. De la même façon, la prédation augmente avec la longueur d’interface entre cultures et milieux semi-naturels si la pression phytosanitaire parcellairevest faible mais on observe la relation inverse si la pression phytosanitaire est élevée. La pression phytosanitaire est donc un déterminant majeur de la modulation des effets du paysage sur la régulation biologique ce qui implique que la gestion parcellaire et les caractéristiques du paysage doivent être considérées conjointement pour promouvoir la régulation naturelle des bio-agresseurs.Ce projet a également permis d’aborder la question des effets des transformations des paysages agricoles sur des temps longs (50 ans) sur la régulation biologique des bio-agresseurs, l’hypothèseétant que les niveaux de régulation observés actuellement peuvent être tributaires des trajectoires d’évolution des paysages et des systèmes d’exploitation agricole. Nous avons mobilisé un cadreméthodologique permettant une analyse intégrée des relations entre les changements de paysage et de gestion agricole sur le contrôle biologique. Sur les 5 régions suivies par le réseau nationalSEBIOPAG, nous avons conduit une analyse systémique combinant lecture de paysage et reconstitution fine par enquête de l’histoire de l’agriculture régionale pour appréhender les évolutionsdes mosaïques paysagères et des pratiques d’utilisation des terres et identifier les principaux facteurs technico-économiques de ces transformations. Ces travaux ont permis de mettre en évidence et dedécrire au sein de chaque région une diversité d’unités fonctionnelles de paysages, caractérisées par des patrons spécifiques d’organisation et d’évolution conjointes du milieu et des activités agricoles. Lacoexistence au sein d’un même territoire géographique d’unités fonctionnelles de paysage aux caractéristiques et dynamiques agro-écologiques différenciées pourrait expliquer une partie desvariations de niveau de régulation observées au sein de chaque région. Ces différents travaux nous amènent à discuter plusieurs points. Le premier est relatif à la nécessité de pouvoir décrire des paysages de pratiques culturales (Puech et al., 2015) notamment la pression phytosanitaire à l’échelle d’un paysage (Lavigne et al. 2014), voire des paysages fonctionnels (Vialatte et al., 2017) pour traiter de la question des niveaux de régulation biologique. Ici, l’accès aux données de pratiques ou aux données biologiques à l’échelle de paysages reste un verrou majeur même si le développement de nouvelles méthodes d’acquisition de données pourrait en partie augmenter notre capacité à décrire le paysage de façon plus fonctionnelle. Le second point porte sur les difficultés méthodologiques liées à l’analyse de données aux échelles paysagères.

Abstract: International audience; Population structure of pests and beneficial species is an important issue when designing management strategies to optimize ecosystem services. In this study, we investigated for the first time the population structure at a continental scale of two migratory species of hoverflies providing both pest regulation and pollination services [Episyrphus balteatus and Sphaerophoria scripta (Diptera: Syrphidae)]. To achieve this objective, we used two sets of 12 species-specific microsatellite markers on a large-scale sampling from all over Europe. Our findings showed a high level of genetic mixing resulting in a lack of genetic differentiation at a continental scale and a great genetic diversity in the two species. All the pairwise F-ST values between European localities were less 0.05 in the two species. These low values reflect a large-scale genetic mixing probably caused by the existence of frequent migratory movements in the two species. Mantel tests revealed isolation-by-distance pattern on the East-West axis, but not on the North-South axis. This isolation-by-distance pattern confirms the existence of North-South migratory movements in both directions and suggests an important step by step dispersal. Population features shown by this study are common in invasive species and pests, but are not often observed in beneficial species. They reflect great colonization abilities and a high adaptive potential when dealing with a changing environment. Our results highlight the two studied species as particularly interesting beneficial insects for pollination and pest predation in the current context of global change.

Abstract: Prod 2017-344b SPE équipe EA GESTAD INRA; National audience; Le niveau de compréhension des processus écologiques et de leurs interactions avec les activités agricoles est insuffisant pour que les agriculteurs mobilisent ou intègrent la biodiversité et ses services dans leurs décisions de gestion. En effet, la plupart des études portent sur la biodiversité taxonomique et peu sur la régulation biologique. Elles considèrent les activités agricoles à un grain grossier et à l’échelle annuelle, d’où une impossibilité d’identifier des modalités de conduite technique des exploitations agricoles utiles pour renforcer les régulations biologiques. En parallèle, l’intégration de résultats scientifiques sur la régulation dans les démarches de conseil est peu développée alors que la demande pour des connaissances et des méthodes mobilisables dans le conseil agricole est forte. Le projet Sebiopag-Phyto (Appel d’offre FRB-Ecophyto, 2013) a proposé une analyse interdisciplinaire des interactions entre processus agricoles et écologiques affectant la régulation des bio-agresseurs à différentes échelles d’espace et de temps en s’adossant sur le dispositif SEBIOPAG ‘Un réseau pour l’étude des Services Ecosystémiques assurés par la BIOdiversité dans les Paysages Agricoles (http://sebiopag.inra.fr/ SOERE Ecoscope). Il est constitué de 100 parcelles (grandes cultures, vergers) réparties sur 5 sites d’étude englobant une diversité de situations agricoles et paysagères (Vergers de la basse vallée de la Durance, Armorique, Coteaux de Gascogne, Dijon Plaine de Saône, Plaine et Val de Sèvre). Les objectifs scientifiques du projet sont : · d’analyser le poids relatif de la gestion parcellaire (pression phytosanitaire, autres pratiques) et du contexte paysager des parcelles sur les variations de niveaux de régulation biologique. · de développer sur les 5 sites SEBIOPAG notre capacité à analyser le rôle des transformations des paysages et des systèmes d’exploitation au cours des 50 dernières années sur le niveau de régulation biologique · d’évaluer les possibilités d’intégration des résultats dans les démarches de conseil sur l’efficacité de combinaisons de leviers à mobiliser. Les 100 parcelles SEBIOPAG ont fait l’objet, sur 3 années successives, de mesures de la régulation biologique de plusieurs types de proies sentinelles, de recueil par enquête des itinéraires techniques et d’une cartographie annuelle du paysage environnant les parcelles. Ce suivi a été complété par un diagnostic agraire sur les 5 sites de façon à reconstituer l’évolution des paysages et des systèmes d’exploitation sur 50 ans. En parallèle, nous avons mené une analyse de la littérature scientifique internationale sur les connaissances produites par les études portant sur la régulation biologique, et en particulier sur la façon dont elles sont mobilisées/mobilisables pour le conseil et l’accompagnement. Les principales productions du projet SEBIOPAG-Phyto sont : - Une analyse critique et une validation de la méthode des proies sentinelles pour analyser les variations de niveaux de régulation biologique (Session 1, présentation de Ricci et al) - La mise évidence d’effets interactifs conditionnels entre gestion phytosanitaire parcellaire et contexte paysager sur la régulation qui suggère que la pression phytosanitaire va moduler le fonctionnement écologique de la parcelle et sa dépendance aux autres éléments du paysage (session 2, présentation de Valantin et al; session 3, présentation de Petit et al) - La coexistence, au sein d’un même territoire géographique, d’unités fonctionnelles de paysage aux caractéristiques et dynamiques agro-écologiques différenciées qui pourrait expliquer une partie des variations de niveau de régulation observées au sein de chaque région (session 3, présentation de Petit et al) - Une mise au point bibliographique sur la façon dont les connaissances sur la régulation biologique sont ou peuvent être mobilisées pour l’action (session 5, Thenail et al.)

Abstract: The spatially-explicit AgriculTural LandscApe Simulator (ATLAS) simulates realistic spatial-temporal crop availability at the landscape scale through crop rotations and crop phenology. Intended to be linked to organism population dynamics, the simulator is developed in a multi-agent platform. The model relies on initial GIS inputs for landscape composition and configuration. Users define typical rotations and crop phenology stages to be included, according to their objectives. In the study, we present two applications to contrasting landscapes, where ATLAS is capable of simulating accurate composition (crop area) and configuration (crop clustering) dynamics. ATLAS has potential applicability to a range of contrasting agricultural landscapes. The benefits of such a simulator are the possibility to study the effects of various simulated management scenarios of crop spatial-temporal availability in relation to target organisms and/or specific ecological processes (e.g. pest, biological control), within a single model framework.

Abstract: International audience; Context: The importance of landscape complexity for biological control is well-known, but its functional roles are poorly understood.Objectives: We evaluated the landscape capacity to provide floral resources for beneficial insects and its consequences for biological control in fields.Methods:The gut contents of adult hoverflies sampled in 41 cereal fields were analysed to determine which plant species are exploited. The relative value of each habitat in providing adequate pollen resources was evaluated by vegetation survey. Then 15 cereal fields were selected along a gradient of landscape complexity, where the abundance of aphids, hoverfly larvae and aphid parasitism was monitored. The habitat’s proportions in landscape buffers surrounding these fields were used as landscape descriptors and to assess the potential level of pollen resources provision (LP index).Results: Aphid abundance significantly decreased with an increase of the LP index mainly sustained by grassy strips and weeds in fields. However, hoverfly larvae abundance also decreased with the increasing LP index. The enhancement of the aphid parasitism rate with the LP index suggests that aphid parasitoids may benefit from the same floral resources as hoverflies. Their crop habitat specialism may give them a competitive advantage in fields where both aphid and floral resources are abundant.Conclusions: Complex interaction networks involved in biological control may disrupt the expected direct effects of floral resource provisioning for a focal beneficial species. We highlighted fields and grassy strips as habitats provisioning floral resources for which the LP index could be very helpful to optimize agroecological management strategies.

Abstract: International audience; Forest pest damage is expected to increase with global change. Tree diversity could mitigate this impact, but unambiguous demonstration of the diversity–resistance relationship is lacking in semi-natural mature forests. We used a network of 208 forest plots sampled along two orthogonal gradients of increasing tree species richness and latitudes to assess total tree defoliation in Europe. We found a positive relationship between tree species richness and resistance to insect herbivores: overall damage to broadleaved species significantly decreased with the number of tree species in mature forests. This pattern of associational resistance was frequently observed across tree species and countries, irrespective of their climate. These findings confirm the greater potential of mixed forests to face future biotic disturbances in a changing world.

Abstract: Hosts belonging to the same species suffer dramatically different impacts from their natural enemies. This has been explained by host neighbourhood, that is, by surrounding host-species diversity or spatial separation between hosts. However, even spatially neighbouring hosts may be separated by many million years of evolutionary history, potentially reducing the establishment of natural enemies and their impact. We tested whether phylogenetic isolation of oak hosts from neighbouring trees within a forest canopy reduces phytophagy. We found that an increase in phylogenetic isolation by 100 million years corresponded to a 10-fold decline in phytophagy. This was not due to poorer living conditions for phytophages on phylogenetically isolated oaks. Neither species diversity of neighbouring trees nor spatial distance to the closest oak affected phytophagy. We suggest that reduced pressure by natural enemies is a major advantage for individuals within a host species that leave their ancestral niche and grow among distantly related species.

Abstract: Deuterium δD isotopic analysis is increasingly being used to trace wildlife movement, and undoubtedly has much to offer in this respect, but questions still remain as to the feasibility and practicality of the method in ecology. Here we report our attempt to determine the geographic origin of an auxiliary hoverfly, Episyrphus balteatus, in south-western France. We used quantile regression to calculate the minimum separation distance, based on the International Atomic Energy Agency/World Meteorological Organization (IAEA/WMO) data, at which two insects could be said to originate from different latitudes with a given degree of confidence. We collected larvae in spring 2007 and 2009 to obtain the δD signal of indigenous hoverflies and we trapped adults during one complete year (from Dec. 2006 to Nov. 2007). The smallest separation distance calculated was about 1400 km in western Europe. Our results revealed greater variability in δD of adults in autumn than in spring. From this we infer an autumnal migration. Because of the presence of mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, the δD gradient in precipitation in western Europe is less clear than on the American continent, where it has been used successfully to infer geographical origins of animals under certain conditions. Despite the complications encountered in Europe, the minimum separation distance model proved a useful first step to obtain a first range of possible origins of E. balteatus and the application of the model to other arthropod species in Europe warrants investigation. Abstract: One of the major factors determining the incidence of Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) on autumn-sown cereals is the viruliferous state of immigrant winged aphids. This variable is assessed routinely using the enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA). However, the threshold for virus detection by ELISA can lead to false negative results for aphids carrying less than 10(6) particles. Although molecular detection techniques enabling the detection of lower virus quantities in samples are available, the relatively laborious sample preparation and data analysis have restricted their use in routine applications. A gel-free real-time one-step reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) protocol is described for specific detection and quantitation of BYDV-PAV, the most widespread BYDV species in Western Europe. This new assay, based on TaqMan technology, detects and quantifies from 10(2) to 10(8) BYDV-PAV RNA copies. This test is 10 and 10(3) times more sensitive than the standard RT-PCR and ELISA assays published previously for BYDV-PAV detection and significantly improves virus detection in single aphids. Extraction of nucleic acids from aphids using either phenol/chloroform or chelatin resin-based protocols allow the use of pooled samples or of a small part (up to 1/1600th) of a single aphid extract for efficient BYDV-PAV detection.

Abstract: International audience; The impact of invasive herbivore species may be lower in more diverse plant communities due to mechanisms of associational resistance. According to the “resource concentration hypothesis” the amount and accessibility of host plants is reduced in diverse plant communities, thus limiting the exploitation of resources by consumers. In addition, the “natural enemy hypothesis” suggests that richer plant assemblages provide natural enemies with more complementary resources and habitats, thus promoting top down regulation of herbivores. We tested these two hypotheses by comparing crown damage by the invasive Asian chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) on chestnut trees (Castanea sativa) in pure and mixed stands in Italy. We estimated the defoliation on 70 chestnut trees in 15 mature stands sampled in the same region along a gradient of tree species richness ranging from one species (chestnut monocultures) to four species (mixtures of chestnut and three broadleaved species). Chestnut defoliation was significantly lower in stands with higher tree diversity. Damage on individual chestnut trees decreased with increasing height of neighboring, heterospecific trees. These results suggest that conservation biological control method based on tree species mixtures might help to reduce the impact of the Asian chestnut gall.

Abstract: Atteindre l’objectif affiché de réduction du niveau d’usage de produits phytosanitaires tout en maintenant les niveaux de production des cultures implique la mise en place de stratégies de protection des cultures alternatives à la lutte chimique. L’adoption de pratiques plus favorables à la biodiversité dans les agroécosystèmes pourrait contribuer à augmenter les services de régulation biologique des ravageurs de culture. Il est établi que la biodiversité des milieux cultivés est modulée par des facteurs naturels et anthropiques agissant à différentes échelles spatiales, allant de la parcelle agricole au paysage, mais la compréhension des mécanismes écologiques qui produisent ces effets reste limitée. Pour produire des connaissances sur les déterminants des niveaux de régulations biologiques, il est nécessaire d’avoir recours à une approche à long terme qui mobilise à la fois une description des systèmes de cultures et une caractérisation écologique du contexte paysager. Pour répondre à cet enjeu a été constitué SEBIOPAG (http://sebiopag.inra.fr), un réseau pour l’étude des Services Ecosystémiques assurés par la BIOdiversité dans les Paysages Agricoles qui appartient au réseau national des observatoires de recherche sur la biodiversité (ECOSCOPE). Les objectifs sont de suivre sur le long terme, et dans des zones paysagères contrastées (i) les services écosystémiques rendus par la biodiversité, (ii) les facteurs qui les influencent (composition et structure du paysages, pratiques agricoles) et (iii) leur évolution dans le contexte des changements globaux (utilisation des terres, climatiques,…).Le réseau SEBIOPAG est constitué de cinq sites : Avignon, Dijon, Chizé, Rennes et Toulouse. En 2013, danschaque site, le paysage a été décrit et cartographié à l’aide de trois descripteurs : la proportion de cultures,l’hétérogénéité et la longueur des interfaces entre cultures et éléments semi-naturels. Puis, dans chaque site, 20 parcelles d’exploitants ont été choisies le long des trois gradients paysagers et d’un gradient d’intensité de pratiques. Les premières mesures (exposition de cartes de prédation) ont été effectuées en 2014 et portent sur une évaluation du potentiel de régulation biologique de trois espèces cibles : Acyrthosiphon pisum (pucerons), Ephestia kuehniella (lépidoptère) et Viola arvensis (adventice).

Abstract: International audience; Semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes are generally assumed to enhance the biological control of insect pests based on native beneficial insects, by providing alternative prey and hosts, resources and refuges for overwintering. We hypothesized that natural enemies of winter wheat aphids should arrive sooner in fields near semi-natural habitats. We compared aphid, hoverfly (larvae and eggs) and parasitized aphid (mummies) abundances in 54 winter wheat fields located in southern France from 2003 to 2007. Six surveys were recorded each spring and were split into the early period (defined as the period before the peak of aphid growth) and the late period (after the peak). The wheat fields differed by their surrounding landscape composition measured as the proportion of semi-natural habitats (woods, hedges and grasslands), at three different spatial scales: 200 m, 500 m, and 1200 m. Despite great variability in abundance data between years, the abundance of hoverflies appeared more sensitive to landscape composition than aphid abundance was. Early abundance for both aphids and hoverflies was positively related to wood cover, but not late abundance in spring. The abundance of hoverflies was positively related to hedge and grassland cover at all spatial scales and both periods considered. Aphid parasitism was higher near hedges at the small spatial scale late in the spring. Our results confirmed that higher proportions of semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes enhance the biological control of pests, but this effect depends on the spatial scale, the time period in the spring and the natural enemies considered.

Abstract: International audience; Migration and population dynamics are important in organisms that provide ecosystem services as they determine the occurrence of individuals in a given place at a given time, which, in turn, determines the efficiency of the service provided. To design appropriate landscape management strategies to improve the efficiency of biological control, it is essential to know the origin of beneficial insects that colonize agricultural fields. However, studying migration dynamics in insects is complicated by their small size and short life span which largely prevent the use of conventional techniques based on capture-markrecapture, or remote sensing. [br/]Stable isotopes and morphological characters are intrinsic markers that can be used to infer the geographical origin of many organisms including insects. In this study, we first determined whether the hydrogen isotopic ratio and the wing morphometrics are appropriate markers to study the spring migration dynamics of a major aphidophagous hoverfly species (Episyrphus balteatus). To this end, we assessed the magnitude of variation of these indicators in seven populations along a north-south gradient in Western Europe. Second, we used the two markers in E. balteatus individuals collected in a French agricultural landscape over the course of the spring to assess the proportion of immigrants from southern regions and the period of immigration. [br/]Our results revealed uncertainties associated with the use of the hydrogen isotopic ratio and wing morphometrics, but showed that the spring population of E. balteatus in Western France very likely comprises mainly local individuals, with the probable arrival of some immigrants from nearby regions located further south. The low proportion of immigrants in the spring population has important implications for the biological control provided by E. balteatus in terms of landscape management strategies.

Abstract: This study was based on broad monitoring of spring emergence of hoverflies and of aphid populations in two French agro-ecosystems. Its aim was to determine whether hoverflies overwinter in agricultural fields and/or in field margins at immature stages and to what extent local and large-scale landscape features influence the abundance of immature overwintering individuals and the associated biological control. Our results show that the influence of the landscape on the abundance of immature overwintering hoverflies varies among trophic groups. Non-aphidophagous species plus some aphidophagous species, which occasionally feed on crop aphids, preferentially overwinter in field margins near wooded land. Conversely, aphidophagous species, which mainly feed on crop aphids, preferentially overwinter within the fields and are less influenced by semi-natural features. This work also shows a strong negative correlation between the abundance of hoverflies that overwinter at immature stages within the fields and the abundance of aphids in the spring, which suggests a biological control by the hoverflies in autumn. Because they may provide a significant service of biological control, the hoverflies that overwinter within agricultural fields should be taken in consideration in the management of croplands, through agricultural practices for example. The landscape configuration also should be considered in order to maximize the hoverflies community in agricultural landscapes, and to maximize the ecosystem services it provides. This study provides valuable insights on overwintering of hoverflies at pre-imaginal stages in agricultural landscapes and on the role of this overwintering strategy in the biological control of aphid populations. It shows that a landscape mostly composed of cultivated land can provide significant service of biological control if semi-natural features are arranged in a convenient way for natural enemies.

Abstract: International audience; Winter ecology of natural enemies has a great influence on the level and efficiency of biological control at spring. The hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus (DeGeer) (Diptera: Syrphidae) is one of the most important natural predators of crop aphids in Europe. Three different overwintering strategies coexist in this species which makes it a good model in order to study ecologically-based speciation processes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether E. balteatus populations with alternative overwintering strategies are genetically differentiated. To that aim, we developed 12 specific microsatellite markers and evaluated the level of neutral genetic differentiation between E. balteatus field populations that overwinter in the three different ways described in this species (i.e. migration, local overwintering at a pre-imaginal stage, and local overwintering at adult stage). Results showed a lack of neutral genetic differentiation between individuals with different overwintering strategies although there are strong ecological differences between them. All pair-wise FST values are below 0.025 and non-significant, and Bayesian clustering showed K = 1 was the most likely number of genetic clusters throughout our sample. The three overwintering strategies form one unique panmictic population. This suggests that all the individuals may have genetic material for the expression of different overwintering phenotypes, and that their commitment in one particular overwintering strategy may depend on environmental and individual factors. Consequently, the prevalence of the different overwintering strategies would be potentially modified by landscape engineering and habitat management which could have major implications for biological control.

Abstract: International audience; In the context of rapid and severe biodiversity decline in agroecosystems, the European Union has introduced agri-environmental schemes. However, these schemes require evaluation to estimate their efficiency, for further consolidation and improvement. The establishment of grassy strips along watercourses represents a measure of cross-compliance introduced in France in 2005. In this study, we analyzed the benefits of these new landscape elements for biodiversity, by (i) exploring the plant community composition of grassy strips in relation to their landscape context, (ii) analyzing the faunal communities of three major functional groups (i.e., small mammals, syrphids, and carabid beetles) present in grassy strips of agroecosystems, (iii) comparing the faunal biodiversity to that observed in other habitats of agroecosystems, such as fields and hedgerows, and (iv) investigating the relationships between faunal community indices and grassy strip properties. The results of our study showed that the plant community of grassy strips is mainly influenced by semi-natural habitats that are present within a landscape context, i.e., at a scale >500 m. We found that grassy strips do not necessarily present areas of particularly high animal biodiversity compared to other habitats (i.e., fields and hedgerows). However, the properties of these strips (i.e., length, width and plant biodiversity) influence the structure of faunal communities. Two years after the establishment of grassy strips, their role as ecotones between previous field margins (mostly hedgerows in our study site) is illustrated through the response of the fauna. Hence, grassy strips, being more stable than cultivated fields, contribute to a new refuge within the agroecosystem landscape.

49. Phytophagy on phylogenetically isolated trees: why hosts should escape their relatives

Abstract: Hosts belonging to the same species suffer dramatically different impacts from their natural enemies. This has been explained by host neighbourhood, that is, by surrounding host-species diversity or spatial separation between hosts. However, even spatially neighbouring hosts may be separated by many million years of evolutionary history, potentially reducing the establishment of natural enemies and their impact. We tested whether phylogenetic isolation of oak hosts from neighbouring trees within a forest canopy reduces phytophagy. We found that an increase in phylogenetic isolation by 100 million years corresponded to a 10-fold decline in phytophagy. This was not due to poorer living conditions for phytophages on phylogenetically isolated oaks. Neither species diversity of neighbouring trees nor spatial distance to the closest oak affected phytophagy. We suggest that reduced pressure by natural enemies is a major advantage for individuals within a host species that leave their ancestral niche and grow among distantly related species.

Abstract: International audience; A host may be physically isolated in space and then may correspond to a geographical island, but it may also be separated from its local neighbours by hundreds of millions of years of evolutionary history, and may form in this case an evolutionarily distinct island. We test how this affects the assembly processes of the host's colonizers, this question being until now only invoked at the scale of physically distinct islands or patches. We studied the assembly of true bugs in crowns of oaks surrounded by phylogenetically more or less closely related trees. Despite the short distances (less than 150 m) between phylogenetically isolated and non-isolated trees, we found major differences between their Heteroptera faunas. We show that phylogenetically isolated trees support smaller numbers and fewer species of Heteroptera, an increasing proportion of phytophages and a decreasing proportion of omnivores, and proportionally more non-hostspecialists. These differences were not due to changes in the nutritional quality of the trees, i.e. species sorting, which we accounted for. Comparison with predictions from meta-community theories suggests that the assembly of local Heteroptera communities may be strongly driven by independent metapopulation processes at the level of the individual species. We conclude that the assembly of communities on hosts separated from their neighbours by long periods of evolutionary history is qualitatively and quantitatively different from that on hosts established surrounded by closely related trees. Potentially, the biotic selection pressure on a host might thus change with the evolutionary proximity of the surrounding hosts.
