Abstract

The article discusses a study which examines the role of gene-environment interaction in the development of orofacial clefts (OFCs) in Nigeria. The study used DNA from the saliva of Nigerian participants to investigate the sequencing of cleft candidate genes including MSX1, IRF6, and FGFR1. Findings reveal the genetic mutation A34G in MSX1 gene in nine cases. It concludes that MSX1 A34G variant might be critical in the formation of OFCs.
