Ecological developmental biology (eco-devo) explores the mechanistic relationships between the processes of individual development and environmental factors. Recent studies imply that some of these relationships have deep evolutionary origins, and may even pre-date the divergences of the simplest extant animals, including cnidarians and sponges. Development of these early diverging metazoans is often sensitive to environmental factors, and these interactions occur in the context of conserved signaling pathways and mechanisms of tissue homeostasis whose detailed molecular logic remain elusive. Efficient methods for transgenesis in cnidarians together with the ease of experimental manipulation in cnidarians and sponges make them ideal models for understanding causal relationships between environmental factors and developmental mechanisms. Here, we identify major questions at the interface between animal evolution and development and outline a road map for research aimed at identifying the mechanisms that link environmental factors to developmental mechanisms in early diverging metazoans.

Most bacterial species make transitions between habitats, such as switching from free living to symbiotic niches. We provide evidence that a galaxin protein, EsGal1, of the squid Euprymna scolopes participates in both: (i) selection of the specific partner Vibrio fischeri from the bacterioplankton during symbiosis onset and, (ii) modulation of V. fischeri growth in symbiotic maintenance. We identified two galaxins in transcriptomic databases and showed by quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction that one (esgal1) was dominant in the light organ. Further, esgal1 expression was upregulated by symbiosis, a response that was partially achieved with exposure to symbiont cell-envelope molecules. Confocal immunocytochemistry of juvenile animals localized EsGal1 to the apical surfaces of light-organ epithelia and surrounding mucus, the environment in which V. fischeri cells aggregate before migration into the organ. Growth assays revealed that one repeat of EsGal1 arrested growth of Gram-positive bacterial cells, which represent the cell type first 'winnowed' during initial selection of the symbiont. The EsGal1-derived peptide also significantly decreased the growth rate of V. fischeri in culture. Further, when animals were exposed to an anti-EsGal1 antibody, symbiont population growth was significantly increased. These data provide a window into how hosts select symbionts from a rich environment and govern their growth in symbiosis.

Hydra, ein basaler Metazoa, ist durch seinen einfachen Körperbau mit nur einer Achse ein idealer Modellorganismus, um Vorgänge der Musterbildung, im Speziellen die der Achsenbildung, zu studieren. Durch die Analyse von Genexpressionsveränderungen während der Kopfregeneration und der Knospung mittels Suppression Subtractive Hybridisation (SSH) in Kombination mit der Hybridisierung von cDNA Macroarrays konnte zum ersten Mal ein quantitativer Überblick über die bei diesen Vorgängen involvierten Gene erhalten werden. Dabei wurden u.a. experimentelle Beweise für die Hypothese gesammelt, dass sich die Knospung und die Kopfregenration in der Benutzung der molekularen Maschinerie unterscheiden. Darüberhinaus führte eine detailliertere Untersuchung ausgewählter Klone zur Identifikation eines Genes (K8_4), das durch seine gradierte Expression entlang der Körperachse an der Aufrechterhaltung der apikal-basalen Achse in Hydra beteiligt zu sein scheint. Die Analyse von Zielgenen des Peptides HEADY, dass die apikale Polarität der Körperachse in Hydra determiniert, komplettierte die Erkenntnisse aus den vorangegangenen Experimenten. So konnte gezeigt werden, dass HEADY in dem molekularen Netzwerk der Kopfbildung/-regeneration, die proteolytische Aktivität von jenen Proteasen moduliert, die entweder spezifisch im Gastralbereich (L21_1) oder im Kopfbereich (Cathepsin L) exprimiert werden.

Catéchisme breton imprimé en 1783 à Morlaix par Pierre Guyon. On le doit à l’initiative d’Augustin-René-Louis Le Mintier, dernier évêque de Tréguier, de 1780 jusqu’à 1790 quand ce diocèse fut définitivement supprimé. C’est la réédition d’un catéchisme paru en 1775, également chez Guyon à Morlaix, sur ordre de Jean-Augustin de Frétat de Sarra, le prédécesseur de Le Mintier. La mention « eil édition » (seconde édition) se réfère cependant à l’édition originale de 1769 dont n’existe plus aucun exemplaire. La catéchisme de Le Mintier sera encore réédité sous la Restauration sur ordre de Jean-Baptiste de Caffarelli du Falga, évêque de Saint-Brieuc et Tréguier. L’exemplaire de la bibliothèque Montbret appartenait, selon la trace manuscrite sur la couverture à « A. Piton curé de Plourin de 1786 à 1806 ». Il s’agit probablement de Jacques (sic ?) Piton (1752-1832) (cf. Jean-Louis Le Floc’h, « Le clergé constitutionnel du Finistère », Bulletin de la Société archéologique, t. CXIX, 1990, p. 293-336). Né à Plougonven, Piton exerça ses fonctions successivement à Ploujean, Lannéanou, Plourin, Guerlesquin et à nouveau à Plourin, de 1791 à 1806, date à laquelle il devint recteur de Sainte-Sève, avant de se retirer à Morlaix en 1817. Le livre est donc entré en possession des Coquebert de Montbret au plus tôt en 1806, peut-être en lien avec leurs recherches sur le breton dans le cadre de l’enquête ministérielle sur les langues et dialectes de France entre 1806 et 1812., Livre broché, in-8, XIV-66 pages ; texte du mandement en français, texte du catéchisme en breton ; nom du possesseur précédent porté à la main sur la couverture « A. Piton curé de Plourin de 1786 à 1806 ».
