L’homme, son corps et ses limites, et les éléments du vivant qui l’entourent, sont le théâtre de la vie tangible et de l’expérience concrète. À l’envers de ce décor se situe la part intangible, la pensée consciente, l’inconscient, les croyances en une multitude de formes animées et invisi­bles. Au sein de nombreuses cultures, l’idée quasi universelle d’une âme et d’un au-delà côtoie au quotidien toutes sortes d’entités non visibles. Des dieux aux démons, des plantes aux animaux dotés d’une intériorité agissante et d’une puissance morale, l’intangible guide l’existence des hommes. Prières, sacrifices, divinations, prise de substances psychotropes sont autant de rituels et de pratiques concrètes abolissant la frontière entre le tangible et l’intangible. Human beings, their bodies and limitations, and the elements of life that surround them, are the scenery of tangible life and concrete experience. On the other side of this scene is the intangi­ble: thought – both conscious and unconscious – and beliefs in multiple animated and invisible forms. At the heart of many cultures, the almost universal idea of a soul and an afterlife coexists daily with all kinds of invisible entities. From gods to demons, from plants to animals perceived as having an active inner life and moral power, the intangible guides human existence. Prayers, sacrifices, divinations, and ingestion of psychotropic substances are among the many rituals and practices that erase the border between the tangible and the intangible. El ser humano, su cuerpo y sus límites y los elementos vivos que lo rodean, son el teatro de la vida tangible y de la experiencia concreta. Detrás de este decorado se sitúa la parte intangible, el pensamiento consciente, el inconsciente, las creencias en una multitud de formas animadas e invisibles. En el seno de numerosas culturas, la idea casi universal de un alma y de un más allá convive en la cotidianidad con toda suerte de entidades no visibles. De los dioses a los demonios, de las plantas a los animales dotados de una interioridad actuante y de una fuerza moral, lo intangible guía la existencia de los seres humanos. Rezos, sacrificios, adivinaciones, ingesta de sustancias sicotrópicas son al mismo tiempo rituales y prácticas concretas, a través de las cuales se suprime la frontera entre o tangible y lo intangible.

Tel le funambule, l’ethnobiologiste avance en équilibre sur son fil. Dans cette posture tierce, il interroge les liens entre sciences modernes et locales, théories universelles et indigènes, sciences biologiques et humaines. Il explore l’implicite et l’intangible tout en ancrant son étude sur le terrain dans les savoirs concrets des sociétés. Naturaliste tout autant qu’huma­niste, il identifie les bases matérielles et symboliques des relations tissées entre les hommes et leurs natures. S’intéressant de près à la façon dont ces sociétés disposent de la nature, il est témoin de leurs difficultés à s’adapter dans un monde où la diversité, autant biologique que culturelle, est menacée. Alors, il ne peut que descendre de son fil, pour jongler avec de nouveaux outils et concepts facilitant la rencontre entre savoirs scientifiques et locaux, selon une démarche scientifique plus engagée. Like a tightrope walker, the ethnobiologist moves in balance on his or her rope. Examining the links between modern and local sciences, between universal and indigenous theories, bet­ween biological and human sciences, in all these dualities the ethnobiologist occupies a third position. The ethnobiologist explores the implicit and the intangible while anchoring his or her field study on the concrete knowledge of societies. Naturalist as well as humanist, the ethnobiologist identifies the material and symbolic bases of the relationships woven between people and nature. Having a close interest in the way these societies relate to nature, the ethnobiologist witnesses their difficulties in adapting to a world where diversity, both biological and cultural, is threatened. Truly addressing these difficulties requires that the ethnobiologist abandons the rope and engages with indigenous societies and local communities, juggling with new tools and concepts that facilitate the encounter between scientific and local knowledge. Así como el funámbulo, el etnobiólogo avanza en equilibrio sobre su cuerda. En esta postura de equilibrio, él interroga los lazos entre las ciencias modernas y locales, las teorías universales y las indígenas, las ciencias biológicas y las humanas. Explora lo implícito y lo intangible, siempre basando su trabajo de campo en los saberes concretos de las sociedades. Tan naturalista como humanista, el etnobiólogo identifica las bases materiales y simbólicas de las relaciones tejidas entre los seres humanos y sus naturalezas. Al interesarse de cerca en la manera en la que las sociedades disponen de la naturaleza, él es testigo de las dificultades para adaptarse a un mundo en el cual la diversidad, tanto biológica como cultural, está amenazada. Luego no puede más que bajarse de su cuerda para hacer malabares con nuevas herramientas y conceptos facilitando así el encuentro entre saberes científicos y locales, siguiendo un procedimiento científico más comprometido.

Que seraient les êtres humains sans l’immense diversité du vivant – connue aujourd’hui sous le nom de biodiversité – conjuguée au mouvement des saisons, au cours des rivières, à la profondeur et à la qualité des sols ? Bref, sans la nature ?Situés en son cœur, les hommes la pensent et l’ordonnent afin d’appréhender les liens ténus entre la vie et la mort. Faiseurs de mythes formant des liens signifiants avec ce qui les entoure, ils pactisent avec les forces invisibles. Se dotant de techniques puissantes, ils transforment leur environnement, domestiquent végétaux et animaux, tracent les limites des territoires. L’histoire des sociétés, les identités culturelles et religieuses, les organisations sociales et politiques résultent de ces relations réciproques et inextricables entre les hommes et ces « natures » humanisées. What would humankind be without the immense diversity of life –known today as biodiversity– coupled with the change of seasons, the paths of rivers, the depth and quality of soils? In short, without nature? Located in nature’s heart, people think of nature and organize it in order to understand the tenuous links between life and death. People are mythmakers who form meaningful relationships with their surroundings and make pacts with the invisible forces. Equipping themselves with powerful techniques, they transform their environment, domesticate plants and animals, and trace the boundaries between territories. The history of societies, their cultural and religious identities, and their social and political organizations are the result of these reciprocal and inextricable relationships between people and these humanized “natures”. ¿Qué sería de los seres humanos sin la inmensa diversidad de lo vivo – conocida hoy bajo el nombre de biodiversidad – conjugada al movimiento de las estaciones, al curso de los ríos, a la profundidad y calidad de los suelos? ¿En fin, sin la naturaleza? Situados en su corazón, los seres humanos piensan la naturaleza y la ordenan con el fin de aprehender los lazos entre la vida y la muerte. Creadores de mitos formando lazos significantes con lo que los rodea, ellos pactan con las fuerzas invisibles. Al dotarse de técnicas poderosas, ellos transforman su entorno, domestican vegetales y animales, trazan los límites de los territorios. La historia de las sociedades, las identidades culturales y religiosas, las organizaciones sociales y políticas resultan de esas relaciones recíprocas e inextricables entre los seres humanos y sus “naturalezas” humanizadas.

La construction de paysages, les pratiques de cueillette, de chasse ou d’agriculture sont autant de supports de mémoire et de continuité entre le présent et le passé des sociétés. Leurs histoires peuvent remonter à plusieurs générations et bien au-delà. La capacité de se référer au passé permet de se repérer pour innover. L’internationalisation des liens qui s’est amplifiée au XVe siècle lors des grandes vagues de colonisation, a profondément bouleversé certaines sociétés par l’apport de nouvelles façons de concevoir et d’exploiter la nature. La globalisation actuelle des échanges accélère ces transformations. Comment se font ces recompositions et comment s’articulent les continuités parfois ténues entre le passé et le présent, les pratiques des ancêtres et celles – mondialisées – des acteurs actuels ? The shaping of landscapes, as well as gathering, hunting, and agricultural practices, are constant reminders of the continuity between societies’ past and present. The diverse history of human societies inscribed in landscapes and in human uses may date back several generations and beyond. The ability to refer to the past allows people to navigate in the present and innovate for the future. The internationalization of relationships that began in the fifteenth century with the great waves of colonial expansion has profoundly affected virtually all societies by providing new ways to view and exploit nature. The current globalization of exchanges continues to accelerate these changes. How do these transformations occur? And how do the sometimes tenuous continuities between the past and present and between the practices of the ancestors and the newer globalized practices, articulate? La construcción de los paisajes, las prácticas de recolección, de cacería o de agricultura son los soportes tanto de la memoria como de la continuidad entre el presente y el pasado de las sociedades. Sus historias pueden remontarse a varias generaciones e incluso más allá. La capacidad de referirse al pasado permite ubicarse para innovar. La internacionalización de los lazos que se amplió en el siglo XV, luego de las grandes olas de colonización, perturbó a ciertas sociedades por la llegada de nuevas formas de concebir y explotar la naturaleza. La globalización actual de los intercambios acelera estas transformaciones. ¿Cómo se llevan a cabo estas recomposiciones y cómo se articulan las continuidades a veces tenues entre el pasado y el presente, entre las prácticas de los ancestros y aquellas – mundializadas – de los actores actuales ?

Langage oral et gestuel ou langage écrit sont les modes privilégiés de communication des sociétés humaines, sans oublier l’expression artistique. Les supports de ces divers modes d’expression renvoient à des univers symboliques et sociaux différents. L’oralité en appelle à la mémoire collective : la parole fonde l’identité individuelle et sociale lors de l’énonciation de discours quotidiens, de mythes, de rituels ou lors de joutes poétiques. Elle s’appuie sur la mémoire des hommes, sur les pratiques et les objets transmis de génération en génération. La permanence de l’écrit facilite le cumul des connaissances et leur transmission à long terme. L’expression orale comme l’expression écrite permettent le contrôle des symboles et donc du pouvoir. Oral language, gesturing and written language are human societies’ privileged means of com­munication, not to mention artistic expression. These modes of expression correspond to dif­ferent symbolic and social worlds. Oral language appeals to collective memory: speech is at the basis of individual and social identity during the enunciation of daily discourse, myths, rituals, or poetic contests. Orality relies on human memory, on practices and objects handed down from generation to generation. The permanence of writing facilitates the accumulation of knowledge and its transmission in the long term. Expression, both oral and written, enables the control of symbols, and hence of power. El lenguaje oral y gestual o el lenguaje escrito son los modos privilegiados de comunicación de las sociedades humanas, sin olvidar la expresión artística. Los soportes de estos diversos modos de expresión remiten a universos simbólicos y sociales diferentes. La oralidad hace un llamado a la memoria colectiva: la palabra funda la identidad individual y social en la enunciación de discursos cotidianos, de mitos, de rituales o en contiendas poéticas. La oralidad se apoya sobre la memoria de los seres humanos, sobre las prácticas y objetos transmitidos de generación en generación. La permanencia de lo escrito facilita la acumulación de conocimientos y su transmisión a largo plazo. La expresión oral como la expresión escrita permiten el control de los símbolos y por lo tanto del poder.

The knowledge, values, and practices of Indigenous peoples and local communities offer ways to understand and better address social-environmental problems. The article reviews the state of the literature on this topic by focusing on six pathways by which Indigenous peoples and local communities engage with management of and relationships to nature. These are (a) undertaking territorial management practices and customary governance, (b) contributing to nature conservation and restoration efforts with regional to global implications, (c) co-constructing knowledge for assessments and monitoring, (d) countering the drivers of unsustainable resource use and resisting environmental injustices, (e) playing key roles in environmental governance across scales, and (f) offering alternative conceptualizations of the interrelations between people and nature. The review shows that through these pathways Indigenous peoples and local communities are making significant contributions to managing the health of local and regional ecosystems, to producing knowledge based in diverse values of nature, confronting societal pressures and environmental burdens, and leading and partnering in environmental governance. These contributions have local to global implications but have yet to be fully recognized in conservation and development polices, and by society at large.
