Background: Dental implant success critically depends on the primary stability of the implant, which is significantly influenced by the bone density at the osteotomy site. Traditional drilling techniques for osteotomy preparation often compromise bone volume and quality. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of osseodensification, a novel osteotomy preparation technique, on bone density and implant stability. The technique utilizes specialized drills that operate in a counter-clockwise direction to compact autografted bone laterally and apically, preserving and enhancing bone density. Methods: A total of 32 patients undergoing dental implant surgery were included in this study. Pre-operative and post-operative bone densities at the apical, mesial, and distal regions of the osteotomy sites were measured using Dentascan (CT) and analyzed with Radiant DICOM software. The study utilized osseodensification drills for osteotomy preparation, comparing pre-operative and post-operative bone densities to assess the technique's efficacy. Results: The study found a statistically significant increase in bone density post-operatively (p < 0.001), with the greatest improvement observed in the distal region, followed by the mesial and apical regions. The findings underscore osseodensification's effectiveness in enhancing bone density and primary stability, with the distal region exhibiting the highest bone density. Conclusion: Osseodensification represents a significant advancement in implant dentistry for osteotomy preparation. By preserving and increasing bone density through compact autografting, this technique not only improves primary stability but also offers potential benefits in indirect sinus lifting and alveolar ridge expansion. The study advocates for the broader adoption of osseodensification drills in clinical practice to achieve better outcomes in dental implantology. There has been increasing application of autologous costal chondral/osteochondral transplantation (ACCT/ACOT) and costa‐derived chondrocyte implantation (ACCI) for articular cartilage repair over the past three decades. This review presents the major evidence on the properties of costal cartilage and bone and their qualifications as grafts for articular cartilage repair, the major clinical applications, and the risks and strategies for costal chondral/osteochondral graft(s) harvest. First, costal cartilage has many specific properties that help restore the articular surface. Costa, which can provide abundant cartilage and cylindrical corticocancellous bone, preserves permanent chondrocyte and is the largest source of hyaline cartilage. Second, in the past three decades, autologous costal cartilage‐derived grafts, including cartilage, osteochondral graft(s), and chondrocyte, have expanded their indications in trauma and orthopaedic therapy from small to large joints, from the upper to lower limbs, and from non‐weight‐bearing to weight‐bearing joints. Third, the rate of donor‐site complications of ACCT or ACOT is low, acceptable, and controllable, and some skills and accumulated experience can help reduce the risks of ACCT and ACOT. Costal cartilage‐derived autografting is a promising technique and could be an ideal option for articular chondral lesions with or without subchondral cysts. More high‐quality clinical studies are urgently needed to help us further understand the clinical value of such technologies.

This technical note aimed to present a straigthforward method for harvesting quadriceps tendon autografts with the use of a simple vaginal speculum and direct visualisation of a scope. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with quadriceps tendon autografts has gained popularity in recent years, with many harvesting techniques that use different harvesting systems available on the market. These techniques vary from transverse to longitudinal skin incisions and from open to minimally invasive approaches and have a learning curve, as with the majority of surgical procedures. The technique proposed in this technical note is minimally invasive, can be easily reproduced by any surgeon irrespective of their experience, has a short learning curve, requires no additional cost or technical support during the procedure and creates a stable working space that allows for freedom of manipulation of surgical instruments and the arthroscope. In men cured of childhood cancer, fertility disorders related to damage to the stock of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) constitute one of the main side effects of treatments, adversely affecting the patients' quality of life. The development of new technologies in human reproduction is necessary to provide curative solutions for this iatrogenic infertility. The preservation of immature testicular tissue (ITT) fragments is recommended for prepubescent patients expected to be exposed to highly gonadotoxic treatments. The SSCs present in the prepubertal testicle constitute a source of cells for developing future therapies with the hope of restoring fertility. Testicular stem cell transplantation and autografting of ITT fragments are potential fertility restoration techniques that have proven effective in preclinical models of non-human primates. Objective Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT) is a common and clinically challenging disease. The optimal management is still under debate. The purpose of this prospective study was to investigate the feasibility and clinical outcomes of autologous costal osteochondral transplantation (ACOT) for the treatment of cystic OLT. Methods From November 2021 to April 2023, five patients underwent autologous costal osteochondral transplantation (ACOT) for cystic OLT. The demographic data was described, including age, gender, lesion size and location. We prospectively evaluated their functional and imaging outcomes of the five patients for 12 months postoperatively, including numeric rating score (NRS) for pain when walking, Tegner score, American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) score and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) score, and imaging results. A paired t‐test was used for preoperative and postoperative comparison of the paired‐design dataset. Results The average age was 36.6 ± 11.1 years. The average diameter of chondral lesions was 14.95 ± 2.71 mm, the average diameter of subchondral cysts was 10.66 ± 1.84 mm, and their average depth was 10.40 ± 1.86 mm. At 12 months postoperatively, the clinical function indexes improved significantly, including NRS (from 5.2 ± 2.3 to 0), Tegner score (from 3.2 ± 0.4 to 5.8 ± 0.4), AOFAS score (from 72.8 ± 10.0 to 98.2 ± 4.0), and FAAM score (FAAM/ADL from 61.2 ± 24.7 to 99.3 ± 1.6; FAAM/Sports from 32.5 ± 13.73 to 96.3 ± 8.4). Their magnetic resonance observation of cartilage repair tissue (MOCART) scores reached 78.0 ± 7.6 points. ICRS scores of three patients were nearly normal (10 or 11 points). The biopsy of the surviving grafts showed plenty of hyaline cartilage matrix and scattered chondrocytes histologically. No major severe complications were reported during the 12 months follow‐up. Conclusion ACOT could significantly relieve the symptoms of patients with OLT and improve their clinical function at short‐term follow‐up. ACOT might be a feasible and useful method for repairing OLT with subchondral cysts.

Treatment of chronic patellar tendon ruptures represents a real challenge for orthopaedic surgeons. The superior patellar migration and the pathological aspect of the tendon are the two conditions that aggravate the situation. Several reconstruction methods have been described in the literature. Hamstring tendon augmentation using horizontal patellar tunnel is widely used in such cases. However, underuse of longitudinal patellar tunnels, although they reproduce the native footprint of the patellar tendon insertion, highlights a missed opportunity in chronic patellar tendon rupture reconstruction. In the current article, we describe a semitendinosus tendon autograft reconstruction technique where the patellar tunnels are drilled longitudinally instead of being drilled transversely from medial to lateral. At 34 months follow-up, our patient claimed full active knee mobility with good quadriceps strength. Reproducing the native footprint of the patellar tendon insertion, through longitudinal patellar tunnels, leads to optimal outcomes after chronic patellar tendon rupture reconstruction with Semitendinosus Autograft.

Abstract Objective Clinical and functional evaluation of the surgical treatment for chronic injury of the distal biceps brachii applying a surgical technique with grafting of the distal triceps brachii tendon. Methods A study based on a review of the medical records and clinical evaluation of the patients submitted to surgical treatment for chronic injury to the distal insertion of the biceps brachii between February 2015 and February 2017. In a 12-month-minimum postoperative follow-up, 7 patients were evaluated regarding the range of motion of the operated and non-operated elbows, flexion, upper-limb extension and supination with a digital dynamometer, the hook test, the satisfaction index, and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) and Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) intruments. Results During the postoperative functional evaluation, no patient reported dissatisfaction with the esthetic outcome of the incisions, and all of them were satisfied/very satisfied with the range of motion and strength of the operated limb. No neurovascular complications, surgical site infection or tendon rupture were observed. On the MEPS and DASH scales, all patients scored 100 and 0 respectively. The mean flexion was of 133.5° on the operated side, versus 139.2° on the non-operated side. The mean extension was of 5° on the operated side versus 0° on the non-operated side. The supination was of 86.5° versus 90°, and the pronation, 80° versus 80°, when comparing the operated and non-operated sides respectively. The mean flexion, extension and supination corresponded respectively to 92.5%, 96.4% and 86.8% of those of the nonoperated limb. Conclusion Recosntruction of the distal biceps brachii with triceps grafting seems to be an effective and safe option for the treatment of chronic distal biceps injuries.

Evidence shows that an increased width and thickness of the keratinized mucosa favours peri-implant health. The aim of this network meta-analysis was to compare the clinical effects of alternative biomaterials for peri-implant soft tissue phenotype modification (PSPM) in patients with dental implants when compared to autologous tissue grafts. An electronic search without language or date limitations was performed in four databases and the grey literature for articles published until November 2020. The eligibility criteria included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating the clinical outcomes of biomaterials for PSPM. A pairwise and network meta-analysis was conducted for each parameter to assess and compare the outcomes between the different treatment arms for the primary and secondary outcomes. A total of 11 RCTs were included in this review. The free gingival graft (FGG) showed the best clinical effect for increasing keratinized mucosa width (KMW). When compared in a network, the FGG demonstrated the best treatment ranking of probability results, followed by connective tissue graft (CTG), acellular dermal matrix (ADM), and xenogeneic collagen matrix (XCM). For the parameters 'mucosa thickness' and 'participant satisfaction with aesthetics', the results were CTG > ADM > XCM and XCM > ADM > CTG, respectively. Autogenous tissue grafts (FGG/CTG) demonstrate the best results in increasing KMW and mucosa thickness when compared to the other biomaterials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: It is essential to have sufficient bone bulk and density at the implant site in order to achieve good bone-to-implant contact and primary stability, which are crucial for osseointegration. A new osteotomy preparation technique was recently introduced that uses a bone preservation method that creates a layer of compacted bone along the surface of the osteotomy. The hypothesis of this study was that this novel technique would increase primary implant stability, bone mineral density, and the percentage of bone at the implant surface compared with drilling technique. Materials and Methods: A total of 72 osteotomies were created in porcine tibial plateau bone samples using three preparation techniques: standard drilling; osseous extraction drilling with a new tapered, multi-fluted bur design; and osseous densification with the same multi-fluted bur rotating in a reversed direction that preserved and created a compacted layer of bone. The surgical process (temperature increase, drilling force, and torque), mechanical stability during the insertion and removal of 4.1-mm and 6.0-mm diameter implants (implant torque and stability quotient), and bone imaging (scanning electron microscopy, microcomputed tomography measurement of bone mineral density, and histomorphology) were compared among the three preparation techniques. Results: Osseous densification significantly increased insertion and removal torques compared to standard drilling or extraction drilling. No significant differences in implant stability quotient readings or temperature increases were demonstrated among the three groups. Although the same bur was used for extraction drilling and osseous densification techniques, the osseous densification osteotomy diameters were smaller than both the extraction drilling and standard drilling osteotomies due to the spring-back effect of bone elastic strain created. Imaging methods documented a layer of increased bone mineral density around the periphery of osseous densification osteotomies. The percentage of bone at the implant surface was increased by approximately three times for implants prepared with osseous densification compared with standard drilling. Conclusion: This study confirmed the hypothesis that the osseous densification technique would increase primary stability, bone mineral density, and the percentage of bone at the implant surface compared with drilling. By preserving bulk bone, it is hypothesized that the healing process will be accelerated due to the bone matrix, cells, and biochemicals that are maintained in situ and autografted along the surface of the osteotomy site. Background and objective Periodontal therapy primarily aims to regenerate periodontal supporting tissues lost due to periodontitis. Autogenous bone grafts (ABG) are viewed as the gold standard method in bone regeneration and they have fewer drawbacks. Hence, many different bone-regenerating materials can be used including allografts, which have excellent biological qualities. This study compares the relative success rates of ABG and mineralized irradiated cancellous bone graft (MICBG) in repairing intraosseous defects caused by periodontal disease. Methods The study involved 30 patients presenting with intraosseous defects; 15 each were randomly allocated to two groups after obtaining informed consent: Group A (MICBG) and Group B (ABG). Baseline clinical indicators were evaluated three and six months after surgery. Defect depth (DD) and radiographic bone fill (RBF%) were the two radiographic parameters measured at baseline and six months after surgery. Results We observed a statistically significant decrease in radiographic DD between the two groups after six months. However, the mean difference between the two groups for RBF% was statistically non-significant (p>0.05). Conclusions Based on our findings, both bone grafts are equally effective in reducing pocket probing depth (PPD). Our results endorse MICBG as a promising alternative to ABG in regenerating periodontal intraosseous defects. Autologous fat injection was first described roughly a century ago and has been used in surgery ever since. In addition to its use in many surgical fields, it is also frequently used for both aesthetic and reconstructive purposes in breast surgery. Since the application of fat grafting in breast surgery has steadily increased, studies investigating its reliability have simultaneously become increasingly common. Previous studies have reported that the use of fat grafting in breast surgery is reliable, but some pending questions remain about its routine use. In order to use fat grafts successfully in breast surgery, it is necessary to be familiar with the structure and content of adipose tissue, the efficacy of adipose stem cell-enriched fat grafts, the oncological safety of fat grafts, and the problems that may occur in the radiological follow-up of patients who undergo fat grafting procedures. In this literature review, we aim to discuss the use of fat grafts in breast surgery by investigating these common problems.

Background : Tooth infraocclusion is a process in which a completely or partially erupted tooth gradually moves away from the occlusal plane. Submerged teeth can lead to serious complications. Treating teeth with infraocclusion is very challenging. One of the procedures allowing for the replacement of a missing tooth is autotransplantation. The aim of this paper is to review the literature on teeth autotransplantation, supported by a case report involving the autotransplantation of a third mandibular molar into the site of an extracted infraoccluded first mandibular molar, as well as the utilization of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) alongside autogenous dentin grafts for bone tissue regeneration. Methods : A severely infraoccluded first permanent right mandibular molar was extracted and then ground to obtain the dentin graft. A-PRF clots (collected from the patient's peripheral blood) were added to the autogenous dentin graft, to create the A-PRF membrane. An atraumatic extraction of the lower left third molar was performed and then it was transplanted into the socket of tooth no. 46. Immediately after transplantation, tooth no. 38 was stabilized with orthodontic bracket splints for 3 months. The patient attended regular follow-up visits within 12 months. Results : After one year, the patient did not report any pain. In the clinical examination, the tooth and surrounding tissues did not show any signs of infection. However, radiographically, cervical inflammatory resorption, unchanged pulp canal dimensions, absent root growth, periapical radiolucency, and lack of apical and marginal healing were observed. Reconstruction of the bone defect was obtained and the alveolar ridge of the mandible was preserved. Due to poor stability of the tooth and severe resorption, the tooth needed to be extracted. Conclusions : This study is designed to critically evaluate the efficacy of autotransplantation, the application of growth factors, and the integration of autogenous dentin grafts in remedying dental deficiencies resulting from reinclusion. We aim to point out the possible causes of treatment failure.

Introduction Triggering the immune system via antigenic stimulation at the time of spinal fusion surgery may enhance bone morphogenesis and result in successful bony arthrodesis. We sought to demonstrate that bone morphogenesis could be enhanced via antigenic immunologic stimulation of a surgical fusion site. Methods New Zealand white rabbits underwent non-instrumented posterolateral fusion of L5-6 with implantation of either an immunologically activated graft (inert beta-tricalcium phosphate) or harvested autograft. Fusion was evaluated using plain radiographs, micro-computed tomography (CT), mechanical palpation, and biomechanical testing. The final evaluation was carried out at 12 weeks postoperatively. Results Eight rabbits received immunologically activated grafts; 10 received autografts and served as historical controls. Fusion rates were identical between groups (both 50%). Radiographs and micro CT of the fusion mass showed no significant difference between groups, and both showed good incorporation of the transverse processes into the fusion masses with radiographic evidence confirming trabeculation and bone remodeling. However, mechanical testing of the fusion sites showed superior fusion strength in the rabbits that received immunologically activated grafts, approaching a factor of two on flexion/extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation. Little to no graft material was appreciable in the non-fused antigen-treated specimens. Conclusions There is a long-standing need for a graft material that can replace autograft bone, due to the negative clinical consequences and financial costs pertaining to autologous bone harvesting. No allograft bone substitute to date has been able to reliably replicate the success of harvested autograft bone. The paper is focused on combined burn injuries of the eye, face and other body parts in acute care patients treated in non-ophthalmic hospital departments. Purpose: to develop patterns of actions by ophthalmologists and burn doctors at various stages of multiple burn injuries in patients treated in burn units. Materials and methods. 158 burn patients were given full clinical and instrumental examination. Group 1 included 95 patients hospitalized in the department of eye traumatology and reconstructive surgery after being treated in burn units elsewhere, while group 2 consisted of 63 patients examined and treated simultaneously by ophthalmologists and burn doctors from the start of admission to burn units. Results. The patients in Group 1 developed serious ophthalmic complications, ranging from ulceration or perforation of outer eye coats, swollen cataracts, hypopyon, cicatricial eyelid deformation, lagophthalmos etc. to eye apple atrophy, all caused by the absence of eye surgery assistance at early stages of burn treatment. Conclusion. The proposed patterns and range of surgical assistance including that given in the early stages of treatment, prevented the development of severe complications to the eye and the annexa, reduced the rehabilitation period and improved the functional prognosis of combined burn eye injuries. Background: Gingival recession may result in aesthetically unfavourable effects, difficulty in plaque control, increased susceptibility to root caries, and dentin hypersensitivity. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the use of modified semilunar techniques with connective tissue and subepithelial connective tissue grafts (Langer) for denuded root surface coverage. Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, fourteen localized recessions of Miller class I to II were treated in 5 subjects. Recessions were randomly treated with modified semilunar techniques (test group) and a subepithelial connective tissue graft (control group). Clinical parameters such as clinical attachment level (CAL), keratinized tissue width (KTW), probing pocket depth (PPD), vertical recession depth (VRD) and recession width (RW)were recorded at base line, 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery and healing index and the subject's satisfaction was evaluated. The repeated measure test and paired-sample t-test were used for statistical analyses by SPSS. Results: Both methods showed significant improvement in clinical parameters. The healing index (HI) in the test group was a slightly more than the control group in Day 10.Aesthetic VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) levels in the test group were more than the control group in 1, 3 and 6months (test group, in 1 month 6.57±1.13, in 3 month 7.86±1.07, in 6 month 8.00±0.81. control group in 1 month 5.57±1.13, in 3 month 7.00±1.00, in 6 month 7.14±0.90). The KTW, CAL, VRD and RW level’s difference in the test and control group was significant in 6 month compared to the base line (p=0.000). Conclusions: The present study shows that treatment of Miller Class I and II gingival recession by the modified semilunar technique is acceptable. Objectives: Hydroxyapatite (HA) has osteoconductive properties and is widely used as a bone graft substitute. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous product with osteoinductive effects. Hypothetically, a combination of both would augment the bone formation effect of HA and widen its application in spinal fusion surgeries. This study aimed to compare new bone formation with HA granules alone and in combination with PRP versus an autologous bone graft during a lumbar intertransverse process spinal fusion. Methods: A total of 16 adult New Zealand white rabbits underwent single-level bilateral intertransverse process fusion at the L5–L6 vertebrae. One side of the spine received either HA granules alone or a combination of HA granules and PRP, while the contralateral side received an autologous bone graft. Four animals each from the HA group and the HA plus PRP group versus the autograft group were assessed either at six or 16 weeks by undecalcified histology and histomorphometry. The mean percentage of new bone areas over the corresponding fusion masses were compared between groups. Results: No significant difference in new bone formation was observed between the HA and HA plus PRP groups at six or 16 weeks. Study Question: Can vitrified baboon ovarian tissue survive >5 months after autotransplantation and subsequently restore fertility?Summary Answer: Our results show that ovarian tissue grafts can survive at least 18 months, but fertility restoration could not be confirmed due to lack of pregnancy.What Is Known Already: Ovarian function in baboons can be re-established after autografting of vitrified-warmed ovarian tissue fragments.Study Design, Size, Duration: Ovaries from five adult female baboons were used for this study. Unilateral ovariectomy was performed in each animal, followed by vitrification of ovarian fragments. Orthotopic autotransplantation of the vitrified-warmed ovarian fragments was carried out 1 day after ovariectomy. One month later, the other ovary was removed from each animal and vitrified. The next day, the ovarian samples were warmed and orthotopically autografted. Biopsies of grafted tissues were taken after 12 and 18 months for stromal tissue and follicle evaluation. Control samples were collected before vitrification.Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: After grafting, follicle survival, growth and function and also the quality of stromal tissue were assessed histologically and by immunohistochemistry. Estrogen levels were measured, and cyclicity was monitored. All five animals were mated several times. Male baboons used in the mating experiments were not of proven fertility.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: After vitrification, warming and long-term grafting, follicles were able to grow. Amniotic membrane as a biocompatible and permi-selective immune barrier was harvested from full-term pregnant bitches and cryopreserved by using Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM) or Minimal essential medium (MEM) 50% medium in glycerol 50% at temperature below freezing −80 °C. A defined 3 cm × 3 cm patch in the craniodorsal surface of the bladder was excised and then autografted in 15 apparent healthy mongrel dogs. In the place of excised patches of 27 apparent healthy mongrel dogs, double layers of 4 cm × 5 cm cryopreserved amniotic membranes were implanted. The results of plain and contrast radiography, ultrasonography, blood and urine analysis and histopathology confirmed that urinary bladder surgical defect that replaced by amniotic membrane implant, proved successful revival by normal structural, functional and contractile layers without any growth abnormalities throughout three months period. The successful implantation model of amniotic membrane will encourage its use on human beings for renovation in the surgical management of bladder cancers and restoring damaged or diseased urinary bladders.

We report the first case of vertical fixation by fibrin glue-assisted secondary posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in a case of surgical aphakia. Advantages of vertical fixation are discussed.

Purpose: This study was designed to analyze the risk factors resulting in high intraocular pressure (IOP), which was accepted as IOP higher than 22 mmHg, following uncomplicated phacoemulsification. Materials and Methods: The records of 812 eyes of 584 patients who underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification were evaluated. There were 330 men and 254 women ranging between the age of 26 and 89 years (65.4 ± 9.8 years). The preoperative, postoperative first day (day 1), first week (day 7), and first month (day 30) IOP values were analyzed. Data on history of diabetes, glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation (PXF), incision site, capsular staining with trypan blue, and surgeon were recorded. A multinomial regression analysis was performed to analyse the relationship of the factors with postoperative high IOP. Results: The mean IOP was 15.6 ± 4.3 mmHg preoperatively. Postoperatively that were changed to 19.7 ± 9.0 mmHg at day 1, 12.7 ± 4.5 mmHg at day 7, and 12.8 ± 3.7 mmHg at day 30. The factors such as surgeon, presence of PXF, diabetes, surgical incision site, and trypan blue were not related to the postoperative high IOP (P > 0.05, in all). The only factor that related to high IOP at all visits was glaucoma (P < 0.005). Conclusion: According to our results, preoperative diagnosis of glaucoma seems to be the only factor to affect the postoperative IOP higher than 22 mmHg.

Aims: To investigate the effect of surgery type on the postoperative astigmatism in pterygium surgery. Settings and Design: Retrospective comparative clinical trial. Materials and Methods: Data of 240 eyes that underwent pterygium excision were investigated. Following removal of the pterygium, patients underwent 5 different types of surgeries: Conjunctival autograft with sutures (CAG-s) or fibrin glue (CAG-g), conjunctival rotational flap (CRF), or amniotic membrane transplantation with either suture (AMT-s) or with glue (AMT-g). The preoperative and postoperative keratometric measurements, evaluated using an automated keratorefractometer, were noted. Statistical Analysis: The overall changes in BCVA and astigmatic degree were evaluated using Wilcoxon signed rank test. The difference in astigmatic values between groups was calculated using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: The most commonly performed procedure was CAG-s (N = 115), followed by CAG-g (N = 53), CRF (N = 47), AMT-s (N = 15), and AMT-g (N = 10). Following surgery, astigmatic values decreased from 3.47 ± 2.50 D to 1.29 ± 1.07 D (P < 0.001, paired t test). The changes in astigmatism was significantly related to the preoperative size of the pterygium (ρ = 3.464, P = 0.005). The postoperative astigmatism correlated with preoperative astigmatism (ρ = 0.351, P < 0.001, Spearman correlation analysis). The changes in astigmatic values was not related to the method of surgery (P = 0.055, ANOVA). Conclusion: Pterygium results in high corneal astigmatism, which decreases to an acceptable level following excision. According to our study, the type of grafting as CAG, CRF or AMT or the use of suture or glue to fixate the graft does not have a significant effect on the change in astigmatism degree.

Aims: This study aims to investigate the effects of intravitreal octreotide on the growth factors, which have significant roles in the pathogenesis of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). Settings and Design: An experimental trial. Materials and Methods: 21 guinea pigs were randomly assigned to form 3 groups each including 7 animals. In group 1 (the control group), 0.2 ml saline solution was applied intravitreally in a location of 1.5 mm behind the limbus. In group 2 (the sham group), 0.07 IU dispase in 0.1 ml and 0.1 ml saline solution were applied via the same route. The guinea pigs in group 3 (the treatment group) were applied 0.07 IU dispase in 0.1 ml and 1 mg octreotide in 0.1 ml via the same route. Octreotide injection was applied twice during the period of 10 weeks of the experiment. At the end of the 10 weeks, eyes were enucleated and retinal homogenates were prepared. The platelet derivated growth factor (PDGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF 1) and transforming growth factor (TGF ß) levels in homogenized retina tissue were measured by Enzyme Linked-Immuno-Sorbent Assay (ELISA) method. Statistical Analysis Used: Kruskal-Wallis variance analysis and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: In the treatment group, a significant decrease was observed in retinal PDGF levels (P < 0.01) while decreases in TGF ß and IGF 1 levels were not found to be significant (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Intravitreally applied octreotide at a dose of 1 mg has a highly strong effect on PDGF. This study suggests that intravitreal octreotide may suppress PVR development and that octreotide may merit investigation for PVR prophylaxis.

Reconstruction techniques using autologous hamstring tendons were generally applied for chronic Achilles tendon rupture with a large defect size. Previous studies have reported good clinical results of this technique for young or middle-aged patients, however, the clinical outcomes in older patients have been unclear. This retrospective case series reviewed four male patients aged >70 years (mean age, 78.5 years) who underwent Achilles tendon reconstruction using the hamstring tendon autograft for chronic rupture of the Achilles tendon with a large tendon defect. The proximal-distal length between the healthy tendon stumps was measured using sagittal T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score and postoperative complications were evaluated. The duration from the traumatic event or appearance of symptoms to surgery was 3.8 (range, 2-6) months. The mean measured gap between the healthy tendon stumps was 67.5 mm on MRI. The AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score improved from 67.3 to 99.5 at the mean follow-up period of 40.3 (range, 23-75) months. No donor site morbidity was observed in all patients. Re-rupture was detected at the five-month follow-up in one patient who had removed a hinged ankle-foot orthosis with adjustable heel wedges without permission. Achilles tendon reconstruction using a hamstring tendon is a viable option for treating selected patients with chronic rupture of the Achilles tendon with a large tendon defect even in older patients. Background: The adventitious roots (AR) of plants share the same function as primary and lateral roots (LR), although their development is mainly an adaptive reaction to stress conditions. Regeneration of grafted plants is often accompanied by AR formation thus making the grafting technique a good model for studying AR initiation and development and their means of emergence. Pectins and arabinogalactan proteins (AGP) are helpful markers of particular cellular events, such as programmed cell death (PCD), elongation, proliferation or other differentiation events that accompany AR development. However, little is known about the distribution of pectins and AGPs during AR ontogeny, either in the primordium or stem tissues from which AR arise or their correspondence with these events during LR formation. Results: AR were developed from different stem tissues such as parenchyma, xylem rays and the cambium, depending on the stem age and treatment (grafting versus cutting) of the parental tissue. Immunochemical analysis of the presence of pectic (LM8, LM19, LM20) and AGP (JIM8, JIM13, JIM16) epitopes in AR and AR-associated tissues showed differential, tissue-specific distributions of these epitopes. Two pectic epitopes (LM19, LM20) were developmentally regulated and the occurrence of the LM8 xylogalacturonan epitope in the root cap of the AR differed from other species described so far. AGP epitopes were abundantly present in the cytoplasmic compartments (mainly the tonoplast) and were correlated with the degree of cell vacuolisation. JIM8 and JIM13 epitopes were detected in the more advanced stages of primordium development, whereas the JIM16 epitope was present from the earliest division events of the initial AR cells. The comparison between AR and LR showed quantitative (AGP,) and qualitative (pectins) differences. Conclusion: The chemical compositions of adventitious and lateral root cells show differences that correlate with the different origins of these cells. In AR, developmental changes in the distribution of pectins and AGP suggest the turnover of wall compounds. Our data extend the knowledge about the distribution of pectin and AGP during non-embryogenic root development in a species that is important from an agronomic point of view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Functional outcomes of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) can be improved by fixation of the tuberosities. This study compares clinical and radiologic results of patients with comminuted proximal humeral fractures treated with rTSA, with and without autologous grafting. Methods Thirty-three patients with proximal humeral fractures were treated with rTSA and tuberosity fixation. In 18 patients (group I; mean age, 75 years), tuberosity fixation was augmented with autografting; in 15 patients (group II; mean age, 71 years), graft augmentation was not used. The mean follow-up was 16.7 (range, 12-24) months in group I and 16.8 (range, 12-25) months in group II. Results Radiologic tuberosity union was achieved in 14 of 18 (77.8%) patients who underwent autograft augmentation and in 6 of 15 (40.0%) patients treated without autografting. The mean American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score was 69.6 ± 13.0 in group I and 51.0 ± 20.0 in group II. The mean Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score was 31.9 ± 24.0 in group I and 58.2 ± 24.6 in group II. A significant difference was detected between groups for ASES and DASH scores. Among shoulder range of motion measures, only forward flexion differed significantly between groups I and II (124° ± 23° vs. 98° ± 30°, respectively). External rotation muscle strength was significantly higher in group I (3.36 ± 1.46 kg) than in group II (2.39 ± 2.00 kg). Conclusion In the treatment of complex proximal humeral fractures in elderly patients by rTSA, cancellous block autograft augmentation can increase the rate of tuberosity union and improve functional outcomes. Background and Objective. Early burn scar removal is the standard of care for burn patients; excisional debridement, however, often leads to excision of dermal remnants, making autografting unavoidable. Enzymatic debridement with proteolytic enzymes enriched in Bromelain (Nexobrid®) leaves these dermal remnants to allow spontaneous healing of partial thickness burns. This study evaluates if Nexobrid® (MediWound Ltd., Israel) reduces the need for surgery and autografting in intermediate and deepdermal burns, the reduction in the excised and grafted area, and the development of hypertrophic scarring. Patients and Methods.We conduct a prospective study between January 2015 and February 2016 evaluating 36 patients (11 females, 25 males) whose mean age was 42.89, with burns covering a mean of 7.47% of their total body surface area (6.42% deep burns). All patients would need excision and autografting as their previous standard of care. Results. After enzymatic debridement, only 13 patients (36.1%) needed surgery (p<0.001). The area of burns excised and grafted was reduced (2.67% vs. 4.98% p<0.001). Since wound closure was delayed until 25.69 days, only 11.1% of the patients developed hypertrophic scars. Conclusions. Nexobrid® allows scar removal in deep-dermal and intermediate burns, reducing the need of surgery and the grafted body surface area, while achieving good scars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of peripheral-blood progenitor cell (PBPC) transplantation as a treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients remains uncertain. We presented herein 11 CML patients treated with autografting of PBPC in early chronic phase followed by interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha). Bone marrow samples obtained at diagnosis and during follow-up after autografting as well as leukapheresis products were analyzed by cytogenetics, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The median follow-up of patients after autografting was 22 months (range: 1-49). Two treatment-related deaths occurred in patients enrolled in the study. Eight out of 9 (88.9%) and 7 out of 9 (77.8%) patients achieved hematologic and cytogenetic responses, respectively. Molecular cytogenetic and molecular responses were seen in all 7 patients analyzed (100.0%) and in one single patient (11.1%), respectively. The median percentages of Ph+ (78.0%) metaphases obtained after 6 months of autografting was lower than those obtained at diagnosis (100.0%, P=0.04). The median percentages of FISH+ nuclei obtained at 3 (4.0%), 6 (7.3%) and 9 (14.7%) months after autografting were also lower than that obtained at diagnosis (82.5%; P=0.002; P=0.003; P=0.030, respectively). At the end of the study, 9 patients (81.8%) were alive in chronic phase, 4 of them presenting hematologic, cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic responses. We conclude that autografting performed with PBPC in early chronic phase of CML followed by IFN-alpha results in lower numbers of Ph+ and FISH+ cells in bone marrow.O papel do transplante de célula progenitora periférica (CPP) como tratamento de pacientes com leucemia mielóide crônica (LMC) permanece incerto. Nós apresentamos neste estudo 11 pacientes com LMC tratados com o transplante autólogo (TMO-auto) de CPP durante a fase crônica precoce, seguido de interferon-alfalfa (IFN-alfa). Amostras de medula óssea, obtidas ao diagnóstico e durante o seguimento clínico após o TMO-auto, e dos produtos das leucaféreses foram analisados por meio da citogenética convencional, método de hibridização in situ com fluorescência (FISH) e transcrição reversa e reação em cadeia da polimerase (RT-PCR). A mediana de seguimento dos pacientes após o TMO-auto foi de 22 meses (variação: 1-49). Dois óbitos relacionados ao tratamento ocorreram em pacientes inseridos no estudo. Oito de nove (88,9%) e sete de nove (77,8%) pacientes obtiveram respostas hematológica e citogenética, respectivamente. Respostas citogenética molecular e molecular foram identificadas em todos os sete pacientes analisados (100,0%) e em um único paciente (11,1%), respectivamente. A porcentagem mediana de metáfases Philadelphia positivas (Ph+) (78,0%) obtidas após seis meses do TMO-auto foi menor do que a obtida ao diagnóstico (100,0%, P=0,04). As porcentagens medianas de núcleos FISH+ obtidas aos três (4,0%), seis (7,3%) e nove (14,7%) meses após o TMO-auto foram também menores do que aquela obtida ao diagnóstico (82,5%; P = 0,002; P= 0,003; P = 0,030, respectivamente). Ao término do estudo, nove pacientes (81,8%) estavam vivos em fase crônica, quatro deles com respostas hematológica, citogenética e citogenética molecular. Nós concluímos que o TMO-auto de CPP em fase crônica precoce da LMC, seguido por IFN-alfa, resulta em menor número de células Ph+ e FISH+ na medula óssea.

Primary iridociliary cysts can induce plateau iris configuration and angle closure glaucoma. We report a patient with bilateral, primary, ring-shaped, solitary iridociliary cysts. The right eye displayed normal intraocular pressure, oppositional iridocorneal angle closure, and healthy optic nerve head. The left eye had advanced chronic angle closure glaucoma. The management strategy varied between eyes and is discussed. This, to the best of our knowledge, is the first report of transscleral Diode laser application in an eye with a large iridociliary cyst.

In this case report, we present occurrence of bilateral angle closure glaucoma in a 9-year-old girl with geleophysic dysplasia. Bilateral YAG laser iridotomy was applied, but intraocular pressure (IOP) remained at high levels, necessitating bilateral trabeculectomy with mitomycin C. On her follow-up examinations for 3 years, IOP remained in the mid-20s with no need for further intervention or antiglaucoma medication. There are few reports describing the ocular findings of geleophysic dysplasia in literature. To our knowledge, this is the first case report describing an application of glaucoma surgery and its results at geleophysic dysplasia.

Objective: Use Bayes′ theorem to estimate the intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering effect of medical treatment initiated for glaucoma and determine if IOP comparisons to the baseline IOP of the same eye is clinically useful. Materials and Methods: The probability that treatment with prostaglandin is responsible for an observed 20% decrease in IOP with prostaglandin treatment was calculated using Bayes′ theorem using the following available information: the probability of a 20% decrease in IOP given treatment with prostaglandin, the probability of a treatment effect using prostaglandin and the overall probability of a 20% decrease in IOP. The calculations were repeated to account for a possible 2 mmHg overestimation of effect caused by measurement error in performing applanation tonometry. Results: The probability that treatment is responsible for an observed 20% decrease in IOP following initiation of treatment with a prostaglandin was 99%. After adjusting for measurement error this probability was 98%. Obtaining two IOP measurements marginally increased the probability. Conclusion: Following initiation of treatment with prostaglandin, Bayes′ theorem allows us to infer that treatment effect is the most likely explanation for an observed 20% decrease in IOP from the baseline; this inference remains even after adjusting for known measurement error. The high probability of a treatment effect is due to the high prior odds of treatment effect and the high likelihood ratio for prostaglandin producing such an effect. If data is available, similar calculations can be used for other percentage decreases, other medications and for the monocular trial.

The study was conducted to evaluate the intra-session repeatability of Tonopen AVIA (TPA). 180 eyes of 180 patients (50 eyes with glaucoma, 130 eyes of controls) were recruited for this observational study. The mean age of patients enrolled in the study was 43.9 ± 16.7 yrs (84 males, 96 females). Mean IOP recorded with Tonopen AVIA was 19.5 ± 9.5 mmHg, 19.4 ± 9.6 mmHg and 19.3 ± 9.2 mmHg, respectively in the first, second and third instances (P = 0.656). The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) ranged from 0.996 (95% CI: 0.956 - 0.998) for glaucoma subjects to 0.958 (95% CI: 0.934 - 0.975) for controls. The coefficient of variation in the study population ranged from 3.47% (glaucoma patients) to 8.10% (healthy controls), being 6.07% overall. The coefficient of repeatability varied between 2.96 (glaucoma patients), 3.35 (healthy controls) to 3.24 (overall). Thus, the Tonopen Avia shows good intrasessional repeatability of IOP in both glaucomatous patients and healthy subjects.

A prospective interventional self-control study to analyse the profile and outcome of suture less and glue free limbal conjunctival autograft for the management of primary pterygium was carried out in 80 eyes with primary nasal pterygium requiring surgical excision. Pterygium excision with limbal conjunctival autografting without using glue or sutures was performed in all the eyes followed by bandaging for 24 hours. The patients were followed up post operatively after 24 hrs., on 3rd day, after 1, 3, 6 weeks and at 3 months. They were examined for visual acuity, hemorrhage, wound gape, graft retraction, graft edema, recurrence or any other complication among the study population. The mean age of the patients was 40.78 years (range 19-80), 56.25% of which were females. Graft retraction occurred in 3 eyes (3.75%) and recurrence was seen in 1 eye (1.25%). Hemorrhage was seen in 26 (32.5%) eyes at 24 hours, which persisted in only 06(7.5%) eyes at 3 weeks and resolved completely in 100% of eyes at 6 weeks. Edema was also noted in 4 (5%) eyes, persisted only in 1(1.25%) eye at 3rd day and resolved completely by 1 week. At 6 weeks postoperatively, three (3.75%) eyes showed gain in best corrected visual acuity by one line and one (1.25%) eye by three lines on snellen's drum. No other complication was noted. Background: Large posteromedial defects encountered in severe varus knees during primary total knee arthroplasty can be treated by cementoplasty, structural bone grafts or metallic wedges. The option is selected depending upon the size of the defect. We studied the outcome of autograft (structural and impaction bone grafting) reconstruction of medial tibial bone defects encountered during primary total knee replacement in severe varus knees. Materials and Methods: Out of 675 primary varus knees operated, bone defects in proximal tibia were encountered in 54 knees. Posteromedial defects involving 25-40% of the tibial condyle cut surface and measuring more than 5 mm in depth were grafted using a structural graft obtained from cut distal femur or proximal tibia in 48 knees. For larger, peripheral uncontained vertical defects in six cases, measuring >25 mm in depth and involving >40% cut surface of proximal tibial condyle, impaction bone grafting with a mesh support was used. Results: Bone grafts incorporated in 54 knees in 6 months. There was no graft collapse or stress fractures, loosening or nonunion. The average followup period was 7.8 years (range 5-10 years). We observed an average postoperative increase in the Knee Society Score from 40 to 90 points. There was improvement in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores in terms of pain, stiffness and physical function during activities of daily living. Conclusion: Bone grafting for defects in primary total knee is justified as it is biological, available then and is cost effective besides preserving bone stock for future revisions. Structural grafts should be used in defects >5 mm deep and involving 25-40% of the cut proximal tibial condyle surface. Pterygium is a fibro vascular encroachment of the conjunctival tissue on the cornea causing variable degree of ocular morbidity. Varies surgical modalities have been developing to reduce the recurrence rate, which is the major limitation of Pterygium surgery. The idea of study is to compare the relative efficacy of two well-known procedure i.e., conjunctival autografting and intra operative Mitomycin-C (0.02%) with recurrence to recurrence and complication.

Purpose: This randomized controlled trial compared fresh-frozen versus autologous bone blocks for maxillary horizontal ridge augmentation in patients with Cawood and Howell class IV atrophies. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four patients were allocated to the autologous and fresh-frozen groups in a 1:1 ratio. Patients underwent computed tomography scans 1 week and 6 months after surgery for graft volume and density analysis. Doxycycline was administered at day 120 and day 150 to label new bone formation. Biopsy for histologic and histomorphometric analyses was performed at reentry for implant insertion, 6 months after grafting. Results: Fresh-frozen grafts had lower density than autologous bone. Autologous and fresh-frozen grafts lost, respectively, 25% and 52% of their initial volume ( p = .0041). Histology revealed the presence of newly formed bone within both graft types, but clear signs of inflammation were present in fresh-frozen blocks. STUDY QUESTION Can a vitrification protocol using an ethylene glycol/dimethyl sulphoxide-based solution and a cryopin successfully cryopreserve baboon ovarian tissue? SUMMARY ANSWER Our results show that baboon ovarian tissue can be successfully cryopreserved with our vitrification protocol. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Non-human primates have already been used as an animal model to test vitrification protocols for human ovarian tissue cryopreservation. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION Ovarian biopsies from five adult baboons were vitrified, warmed and autografted for 5 months. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS After grafting, follicle survival, growth and function and also the quality of stromal tissue were assessed histologically and by immunohistochemistry. The influence of the vitrification procedure on the cooling rate was evaluated by a computer model. MAIN RESULTS After vitrification, warming and long-term grafting, follicles were able to grow and maintain their function, as illustrated by Ki67, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF-9) immunostaining. Corpora lutea were also observed, evidencing successful ovulation in all the animals. Stromal tissue quality did not appear to be negatively affected by our cryopreservation procedure, as demonstrated by vascularization and proportions of fibrotic areas, which were similar to those found in fresh ungrafted ovarian tissue. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Despite our promising findings, before applying this technique in a clinical setting, we need to validate it by achieving pregnancies. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS In addition to encouraging results obtained with our vitrification procedure for non-human ovarian tissue, this study also showed, for the first time, expression of AMH and GDF-9 in ovarian follicles. Aims: To investigate the effect of surgery type on the postoperative astigmatism in pterygium surgery. Settings and Design: Retrospective comparative clinical trial. Materials and Methods: Data of 240 eyes that underwent pterygium excision were investigated. Following removal of the pterygium, patients underwent 5 different types of surgeries: Conjunctival autograft with sutures (CAG-s) or fibrin glue (CAG-g), conjunctival rotational flap (CRF), or amniotic membrane transplantation with either suture (AMT-s) or with glue (AMT-g). The preoperative and postoperative keratometric measurements, evaluated using an automated keratorefractometer, were noted. Statistical Analysis: The overall changes in BCVA and astigmatic degree were evaluated using Wilcoxon signed rank test. The difference in astigmatic values between groups was calculated using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: The most commonly performed procedure was CAG-s (N = 115), followed by CAG-g (N = 53), CRF (N = 47), AMT-s (N = 15), and AMT-g (N = 10). Following surgery, astigmatic values decreased from 3.47 ± 2.50 D to 1.29 ± 1.07 D (P < 0.001, paired t test). The changes in astigmatism was significantly related to the preoperative size of the pterygium (ρ = 3.464, P = 0.005). The postoperative astigmatism correlated with preoperative astigmatism (ρ = 0.351, P < 0.001, Spearman correlation analysis). The changes in astigmatic values was not related to the method of surgery (P = 0.055, ANOVA). Conclusion: Pterygium results in high corneal astigmatism, which decreases to an acceptable level following excision. According to our study, the type of grafting as CAG, CRF or AMT or the use of suture or glue to fixate the graft does not have a significant effect on the change in astigmatism degree. Background: One of the success factors in periodontal plastic surgery is the synergistic relationship between involved tissues and vascular supply. Gingiva as a functional unit is unique with a specific vascular configuration and contains the supracrestal portion naturally created to survive over avascular root surfaces. The aim of this randomized controlled trial is to clinically evaluate the treatment of localized gingival recessions by using gingival unit grafts (palatal tissue involving marginal gingiva and papillae) compared with conventional palatal grafts. Methods: Seventeen patients with Class I to II recession defects on mandibular anterior teeth were included and randomly divided into two groups. Recessions were treated with gingival unit grafts in group 1 (n = 8) and with palatal grafts in group 2 (n = 9). Clinical parameters including vertical recession (VR), probing depth, keratinized tissue (KT), and attachment level were recorded at baseline and 8 months after surgery. Results: Both treatments produced significant clinical improvements within the groups. Intergroup comparison revealed significantly higher VR reduction, attachment, and KT gain in group 1 than in group 2; mean percentages of the defect coverage were 91.62% ± 9.74% and 68.97% ± 13.67%, respectively (P<0.05). Healing of the gingival unit donor site was uneventful. Conclusion: Within its limits, this study demonstrates the possibility of treating buccal recessions with gingival unit grafts as an alternative technique using gingival donor graft of site-specific vascular configuration, with better defect coverage, clinical, and esthetic improvements compared with palatal grafts. INTRODUCTION The therapeutic potential of adult stem cells in coronary and peripheral arterial diseases has been proposed in recent years. However, factors possibly predictive of unfavorable angiogenic results have not been clearly identified as yet. OBJECTIVES Identify candidate predictors of poor angiogenesis, as indicated by need for amputation, after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for chronic lower limb ischemia. METHODS A retrospective analytical case-series study was carried out to detect factors possibly associated with hematopoietic stem cell autograft failure due to low angiogenic potential. The study universe was composed of 47 patients (19 women, 28 men) with critical lower limb ischemia in Fontaine stages IIb, III and IV, who received autologous stem cell transplantation at the Dr Gustavo Aldereguia Lima University General Hospital in Cienfuegos, Cuba, from January 2007 through December 2010. Variables studied were sex, age, medical history (high blood pressure, ischemic cardiomyopathy, diabetes mellitus and chronic renal insufficiency), Fontaine ischemia stage, intermittent claudication, pain score on a 1-10 scale, ankle-brachial pressure index in the affected extremity, presence of ulcers, and smoking. Laboratory variables included: blood concentrations of hemoglobin, glucose, creatinine, liver enzymes, cholesterol, triglycerides and LDH; as well as leukocyte and platelet counts, stem cell viability, prothrombin time and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The main response variable was amputation, an indicator of poor angiogenesis. Using logistic regression, a prognostic score of 1 to 4 was developed for each risk factor and scores added to create a risk prediction scale. Predicted risk for amputation and observed amputation rates were compared for patients in three risk groups: low, 0-4; medium, 5-8; and high, 9-12. RESULTS Factors identified as possibly predictive of poor angiogenesis were: final leukocyte count <20 x 109/L after mobilization with granulocyte colony stimulating factor; age 60 years; pain scale score of 10; glycemia of >6 mmol/L; and triglycerides of >1.8 mmol/L. Patients who scored low on predicted amputation risk scale were spared amputation in 90.9% (10/11) of cases, versus 16.7% (2/12) in patients scoring high. CONCLUSIONS Five possible prognostic factors for low angiogenic potential in stem cell autotransplantation were identified and a preliminary scale established to predict in which patients autotransplantation would be more likely to be successful.
