Abstract

Rotation is thought to drive cyclic magnetic activity in the Sun and Sun-like stars. Stellar dynamos, however, are poorly understood owing to the scarcity of observations of rotation and magnetic fields in stars. Here, inferences are drawn on the internal rotation of a distant Sun-like star by studying its global modes of oscillation. We report asteroseismic constraints imposed on the rotation rate and the inclination of the spin axis of the Sun-like star HD 52265, a principal target observed by the CoRoT satellite that is known to host a planetary companion. These seismic inferences are remarkably consistent with an independent spectroscopic observation (rotational line broadening) and with the observed rotation period of star spots. Furthermore, asteroseismology constrains the mass of exoplanet HD 52265b. Under the standard assumption that the stellar spin axis and the axis of the planetary orbit coincide, the minimum spectroscopic mass of the planet can be converted into a true mass of 1.85 (+0.52,-0.42) M_Jupiter, which implies that it is a planet, not a brown dwarf., Comment: Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (5 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables). Abstract

We present the CoRoT light curve of the bright B2.5V star HD 48977 observed during a short run of the mission in 2008, as well as a high-resolution spectrum gathered with the HERMES spectrograph at the Mercator telescope. We use several time series analysis tools to explore the nature of the variations present in the light curve. We perform a detailed analysis of the spectrum of the star to determine its fundamental parameters and its element abundances. We find a large number of high-order g-modes, and one rotationally induced frequency. We find stable low-amplitude frequencies in the p-mode regime as well. We conclude that HD 48977 is a new Slowly Pulsating B star with fundamental parameters found to be Teff = 20000 $\pm$ 1000 K and log(g)=4.2 $/pm$ 0.1. The element abundances are similar to those found for other B stars in the solar neighbourhood. HD 48977 was observed during a short run of the CoRoT satellite implying that the frequency precision is insufficient to perform asteroseismic modelling of the star. Nevertheless, we show that a longer time series of this star would be promising for such modelling. Our present study contributes to a detailed mapping of the instability strips of B stars in view of the dominance of g-mode pulsations in the star, several of which occur in the gravito-inertial regime., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

3. Monitoring a high--amplitude Delta Sct star for 152 days: discovery of 12 additional modes and modulation effects in the light curve of CoRoT 101155310

Abstract

The detection of small-amplitude nonradial modes in high-amplitude Delta Sct (HADS) variables has been very elusive until at least five of them were detected in the light curve of V974 Oph obtained from ground-based observations. The combination of radial and nonradial modes has a high asteroseismic potential, thanks to the strong constraints we can put in the modelling. The continuous monitoring of ASAS 192647-0030.0=CoRoT 101155310 (P=0.1258 d, V=13.4) ensured from space by the CoRoT (Convection, Rotation and planetary Transits) mission constitutes a unique opportunity to exploit such potential. The 22270 CoRoT measurements were performed in the chromatic mode. They span 152 d and cover 1208 consecutive cycles. After the correction for one jump and the long-term drift, the level of the noise turned out to be 29 micromag. The phase shifts and amplitude ratios of the coloured CoRoT data, the HARPS spectra, and the period-luminosity relation were used to determine a self-consistent physical model. In turn, it allowed us to model the oscillation spectrum, also giving feedback on the internal structure of the star. In addition to the fundamental radial mode f1=7.949 c/d with harmonics up to 10f1, we detected 12 independent terms. Linear combinations were also found and the light curve was solved by means of 61 frequencies (smallest amplitude 0.10 mmag). The newest result is the detection of a periodic modulation of the f1 mode (triplets at +/-0.193 c/d centred on f1 and 2f1), discussed as a rotational effect or as an extension of the Blazhko effect to HADS stars. The physical model suggests that CoRoT 101155310 is an evolved star, with a slight subsolar metallic abundance, close to the terminal age main sequence. Abstract

The two pulsating pre-main sequence (PMS) stars V 588 Mon and V 589 Mon were observed by CoRoT for 23.4 days in March 2008 during the Short Run SRa01 and in 2004 and 2006 by MOST for a total of ~70 days. We present their photometric variability up to 1000 $\mu$ Hz and down to residual amplitude noise levels of 23 and 10 ppm of the CoRoT data for V 588 Mon and V 589 Mon, respectively. The CoRoT imagette data as well as the two MOST data sets allowed for detailed frequency analyses using Period04 and SigSpec. We confirm all previously identified frequencies, improve the known pulsation spectra to a total of 21 frequencies for V 588 Mon and 37 for V 589 Mon and compare them to our PMS model predictions. No model oscillation spectrum with l = 0, 1, 2, and 3 p-modes matches all the observed frequencies. When rotation is included we find that the rotationally split modes of the slower rotating star, V 589 Mon, are addressable via perturbative methods while for the more rapidly rotating star, V 588 Mon, they are not and, consequently, will require more sophisticated modeling. The high precision of the CoRoT data allowed us to investigate the large density of frequencies found in the region from 0 to 300 $\mu$Hz. The presence of granulation appears to be a more attractive explanation than the excitation of high-degree modes. Granulation was modeled with a superposition of white noise, a sum of Lorentzian-like functions and a Gaussian. Abstract

The CoRoT (Convection, Rotation and planetary Transits) space mission provides a valuable opportunity to monitor stars with uninterrupted time sampling for up to 150 days at a time. The study of RR Lyrae stars, performed in the framework of the Additional Programmes belonging to the exoplanetary field, will particularly benefit from such dense, long-duration monitoring. The Blazhko effect in RR Lyrae stars is a long-standing, unsolved problem of stellar astrophysics. We used the CoRoT data of the new RR Lyrae variable CoRoT 101128793 (f0=2.119 c/d, P=0.4719296 d) to provide us with more detailed observational facts to understand the physical process behind the phenomenon. The CoRoT data were corrected for one jump and the long-term drift. We applied different period-finding techniques to the corrected timeseries to investigate amplitude and phase modulation. We detected 79 frequencies in the light curve of CoRoT 101128793. They have been identified as the main frequency f0, and its harmonics, two independent terms, the terms related to the Blazhko frequency, and several combination terms. A Blazhko frequency fB=0.056 c/d and a triplet structure around the fundamental radial mode and harmonics were detected, as well as a long-term variability of the Blazhko modulation. Indeed, the amplitude of the main oscillation is decreasing along the CoRoT survey. The Blazhko modulation is one of the smallest observed in RR Lyrae stars. Moreover, the additional modes f1=3.630 and f2=3.159 c/d are detected. Taking its ratio with the fundamental radial mode into account, the term f1 could be the identified as the second radial overtone. Abstract

Surveys for exoplanetary transits are usually limited not by photon noise but rather by the amount of red noise in their data. In particular, although the CoRoT spacebased survey data are being carefully scrutinized, significant new sources of systematic noises are still being discovered. Recently, a magnitude-dependant systematic effect was discovered in the CoRoT data by Mazeh & Guterman et al. and a phenomenological correction was proposed. Here we tie the observed effect a particular type of effect, and in the process generalize the popular Sysrem algorithm to include external parameters in a simultaneous solution with the unknown effects. We show that a post-processing scheme based on this algorithm performs well and indeed allows for the detection of new transit-like signals that were not previously detected., Comment: MNRAS accepted. 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

International audience; CoRoT (Convection, Rotation and Transit) is a mission of high-accuracy photometry with two scientific programmes: asteroseismology and planet finding, using CCDs as detectors. Ten 2048×4096 CCDs manufactured by E2V (42-80) were calibrated on Meudon test bench in order to choose the best ones for flight. A very high instrument stability is needed. Taking into account the environmental perturbations (temperature, attitude control system jitter, radiations, etc.) we studied sensitivity of CCD gain and quantum efficiency to temperature and sensitivity of the output signal to bias voltages. Special attention was paid to pixel capacity and noise sources coming from dark current and pixel response non-uniformity. The calibration results together with the expected voltages and temperature fluctuations are compared with the specifications.

Abstract

The existence of pulsations in HgMn stars is still being debated. To provide the first unambiguous observational detection of pulsations in this class of chemically peculiar objects, the bright star HD 45975 was monitored for nearly two months by the CoRoT satellite. Independent analyses of the light curve provide evidence of monoperiodic variations with a frequency of 0.7572 d-1 and a peak-to-peak amplitude of ~2800 ppm. Multisite, ground-based spectroscopic observations overlapping the CoRoT observations show the star to be a long-period, single-lined binary. Furthermore, with the notable exception of mercury, they reveal the same periodicity as in photometry in the line moments of chemical species exhibiting strong overabundances (e.g. Mn and Y). In contrast, lines of other elements do not show significant variations. As found in otherHgMn stars, the pattern of variability consists in an absorption bump moving redwards across the line profiles. We argue that the photometric and spectroscopic changes are more consistent with an interpretation in terms of rotational modulation of spots at the stellar surface. In this framework, the existence of pulsations producing photometric variations above the ~50 ppm level is unlikely in HD 45975. Abstract

International audience; Fast photometric observations of target stars in the ecliptic have been organised at the Pic du Midi Observatory (2-m TBL and T1M) and the Haute Provence Observatory (T193) in order to search for small Kuiper Belt Objects by stellar occultations. The target stars have been chosen in the Tycho catalog: 18-1201-1 (Vmag=12,4), 585-671-1 (Vmag=11.8), 4669-750-1 (Vmag=11.9 ), 548-592-1 (Vmag=10.9) and 583-907-1 (Vmag=12.8). They are O stars to optimize the brightness/apparent size ratio. The observation sampling was 20 Hz and we got good quality observation during 18 hours, 28 hours and 8 hours at TBL, T1M and T193, respectively. The r.m.s. signal fluctuations, which mainly varies with telescope diameter and star elevation, may be 0.014 for a 2-m telescope. Within such a signal, an event due to a 120 meters KBO diameter is detected at a 3 sigma r.m.s. level. A realistic size distribution in the KBO population leads to one such event for 27 hours observation (Roques and Moncuquet, Icarus, 147, 530, 2000). The observed events are presented and analyzed. Abstract

We present the search for sub-kilometre trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) by re-examining the CoRoT (Convection Rotation and Planetary Transits) asteroseismology observations. The total observation time employed in this work is about 144 000 star hours with signal-to-noise ratio larger than 1000 computed on 30-s intervals. 13 Possible Occultation Events (POEs) were found from the deviation method. These detections gives a density in the ecliptic sky plane of TNOs larger than 400-m radius of $N(R > 400\,\mathrm{m})=1.4^{+4.2} _{-0.7} \times 10^{7}\,\mathrm{deg}^{-2}$. The fit of the density of TNOs with the believed break rbreak = 45 km provides a power-law size distribution index q larger than 3.5. This value is consistent with the detection of two potential events from Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) observations that found q = 3.8 ± 0.2. However, fitting the 13 POEs with the HST/FGS result alone gives a power-law size distribution index of q = 4.5 ± 0.2 in the size range of 0.2–2.0 km.
