Abstract

A typical olive (Olea europaea L.) inflorescence consists of about 20 flowers. However, in many cultivars, only one fruit develops. This is due to massive abscission of flowers and fruitlets, which occurs during the first month after anthesis. In this study, we used the olive cultivar 'Barnea' to characterize the abscission mechanism and to try to increase fruit set by increasing the number of developed fruit per inflorescence. Removing the lateral flowers 3 weeks before anthesis increased fruit set by more than 50%. Removing all inflorescences but one from a branch increased the number of developed fruits from 0.93 to 2.8 during 2017 and from 0.91 to 3.34 fruits per inflorescence in 2018. Sugar quantification in the pistil revealed that starch level is high on the day of anthesis and low 25 days later in abscised as well as in developed fruit. Soluble carbohydrates are low on the day of anthesis, low in abscised flowers/fruitlets 25 days after anthesis and high in developed fruit. Screening the natural variation found in the Israeli germplasm collection revealed that in most cultivars less than one fruit per inflorescence has developed. Abstract

The high-density planting system recently adopted for olive, facilitates the use of efficient over-head mechanical harvesters. To accommodate the harvester only cultivars with restrained vegetative vigor can be used and managed to limit tree size while maintaining high productivity. Spray application of the 0.05% “Magic” (a commercial product containing 50 g L–1 uniconazol), or soil application of 2 and 4 g tree–1 “Magic”, were tested to control the canopy size of fruitful vigorous cultivars to suit the high density hedgerow system and over-head harvesting. Two year old plants were chosen for the initial application. Soil application of 2 g “Magic” (0.1 g tree–1 uniconazol) caused a satisfactory balanced growth inhibition of the vigorous cvs. Barnea, Leccino and Picholine to suit the high density hedgerow system. Thus, a significant increase of the choice of cultivars to be used for over-head harvesting could be significantly increased. The use of vigorous cultivars treated with uniconazol for over-head harvesting started in commercial plantations in 2006. In some cases an increase of the annual dosage was required with aging of the trees. This required increase of the annual soil application of uniconazol with aging of the trees needs further observations. An increase in fruit production due to the optimal uniconazol treatment was apparent, though results were rather erratic. Still, production in treated orchards was at least within the country’s average for each of the tested cultivars during the experimental years., El sistema de cultivo en seto de alta densidad, recientemente adoptado para el olivo, facilita el uso eficiente de cosechadoras cabalgadoras mecánicas. Para que la cosechadora pueda trabajar es necesario utilizar cultivares con poco vigor vegetativo manejados de manera que se limite el tamaño del árbol manteniendo alta productividad. Para controlar el tamaño de la copa de cultivares vigorosos a fin de adaptarlos al cultivo en seto con alta densidad de plantación y recolección con cosechadora cabalgadora, se probó la aplicación en pulverización de “Magic” al 0,05% (producto comercial que contiene 50 g L–1 de uniconazol), o la aplicación al suelo de 2 y 4 g de “Magic” por árbol, utilizando plantas de dos años para la aplicación inicial. La aplicación al suelo de 2 g de “Magic” (0,1 g uniconazol por árbol) en tres cvs vigorosos, Barnea, Leccino y Picholine, provocó una inhibición de crecimiento satisfactoria y equilibrada. Por tanto, esta técnica puede proporcionar un mayor número de cultivares adaptados a la recolección mecánica con cosechadoras cabalgadoras. El uso de cultivares vigorosos tratados con uniconazol para recolección con cosechadora mecánica se inició en 2006 en plantaciones comerciales. En algunos casos fue necesario un aumento de la dosis anual en plantaciones de mayor edad, aunque son necesarias más observaciones. Aunque fue evidente un aumento en la producción de fruto debido al tratamiento óptimo con uniconazol, los resultados fueron bastante irregulares. Sin embargo, la producción en las plantaciones tratadas estuvo al menos dentro de la media del país para cada uno de los cultivares evaluados durante los años de experimentación.

Abstract

This work was undertaken in order to evaluate retrospectively the relative efficacy of ovulation induction by menotrophins and that of in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF–ET) in the treatment of unexplained Infertility. These two treatments were compared between two groups of patients: 87 couples undergoing 446 cycles of ovulation induction by menotrophins (group A) and 72 couples undergo ing 108 cycles of IVF–ET (group B). A total of 30 and 20 pregnancies were achieved in groups A and B for a rate of 34 and 28% per patient, respectively. A similar cumulative pregnancy rate (CPR) was achieved for three cycles of ovulation induction (23%) and one cycle of IVF–ET (22%). The cumulative live birth rate (CLBR) in group A was 22% after three cycles and exceeded that of one IVF–ET cycle (17%). It is concluded that menotrophin treatment in unexplained infertility is highly beneficial and should precede an IVF attempt. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

44. Gastric surgery is not a risk for barrett's esophagus or esophageal adenocarcinoma

Abstract

Background & Aims:: The contribution of duodeno-gastroesophageal reflux to the development of Barrett's esophagus has remained an interesting but controversial topic. The present study assessed the risk for Barrett's esophagus after partial gastrectomy. Methods:: The data of outpatients from a medicine and gastroenterology clinic who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for any reason were analyzed in a case-control study. A case population of 650 patients with short-segment and 366 patients with long-segment Barrett's esophagus was compared in a multivariate logistic regression to a control population of 3047 subjects without Barrett's esophagus or other types of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Results:: In the case population, 25 (4%) patients with short-segment and 15 (4%) patients with long-segment Barrett's esophagus presented with a history of gastric surgery compared with 162 (5%) patients in the control population, yielding an adjusted odds ratio of 0.89 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.54-1.46 for short-segment and an adjusted odds ratio of 0.71 (0.30-1.72) for long-segment Barrett's esophagus. Similar results were obtained in separate analyses of 64 patients with Billroth-1 gastrectomy, 105 patients with Billroth-2 gastrectomy, and 33 patients with vagotomy and pyloroplasty for both short- and long-segment Barrett's esophagus. Caucasian ethnicity, the presence of hiatus hernia, and alcohol consumption were all associated with elevated risks for Barrett's esophagus. Conclusions:: Gastric surgery for benign peptic ulcer disease is not a risk factor for either short- or long-segment Barrett's esophagus. This lack of association between gastric surgery and Barrett's esophagus suggests that reflux of bile without acid is not sufficient to damage the esophageal mucosa.

Abstract

Background: Heterotopic gastric-type mucosa occurs as a flat island or islands of red mucosa in the proximal third of the esophagus where it gives rise to the ''cervical inlet patch'' (CIP). The aim of the present study was to delineate the clinical epidemiology of the CIP, especially its possible relationship to Barrett's esophagus. Methods: A case-control study compared 53 case subjects with CIP and 4882 control subjects without CIP. In a multivariate logistic regression, the presence of CIP was chosen as the outcome variable, whereas demographic characteristics, social habits, and presence of other endoscopic diagnoses served as predictor variables. Results: The prevalence of CIP was 1.1%. Its presence was associated with hiatal hernia (odds ratio 2.26: 95% CI [1.12, 4.56]) gastric ulcer (2.93: 95% CI [1.34, 6.40]) and Barrett's esophagus (4.41: 95% CI [2.31, 8.41]). Conclusions: The coincidence of the cervical inlet patch and Barrett's esophagus could suggest a shared embryonic etiology. (Gastrointest Endosc 2001;53:717-21.)
