Avionics manufacturers continue to improved on its aircraft intruments for flight efficiency. The ground proximity warning systems head for another round of evaluation as airlines complains of longer flying time and higher retrofitting costs. New lines of weather radar systems, satellite communications and navigation guidance systems are being commissioned and certified by the FAA to ensure better aviation operations.

Next generation business aircrafts will be using advanced technologies that allow pilots to better manage flight control-human interface. Companies involved in developing these technologies include Honeywell, Sextant Avionique and Rockwell-Collins. The developments include cursor control devices, three dimensional displays, datalinks and databases among others that will feature high-resolution maps, hot button icons and graphic system synoptics that actually control systems rather than just monitor them.

Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) for avionics have captured the limelight as manufacturers attempt to work out a GNSS air traffic and navigation system. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recommended raising GPS approach minimums for runways unequipped with an ILS to avoid incurring costs for installing and maintaining approach-light systems because of agency budget considerations. The FAA also stated that decisions have to be made on who shall install and maintain local area GPS augmentation systems.

The advent of new communication and navigation technologies has led to the development of a new generation of intelligent commercial aircraft. These aircraft, which are already being used by airlines such as Qantas and Air New Zealand, are equipped with sophisticated communication and navigation systems, including Global Positioning Systems, future air-navigation systems and satellite-based datalink communication systems. The avionics industry is also developing other technologies that promise to make commercial aviation safer and more reliable.

Bell Helicopter 230 aircrafts equipped with AlliedSignal Inc. 's KFC 500 Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) offer passengers an exceptionally smooth ride. The KFC 500 AFCS provides the Bell 230 with a better level of guidance and control refinement that is noticed once the autopilot function is engaged. The dual channel, fail passive autopilot can be engaged or coupled to the flight director once the aircraft passes through 800 feet agl and 50 KIAS. The pilot does not have to take manual control of the aircraft until the aircraft descends to 100 feet agl and slows to 50 KIAS on final approach.
