1. RoLargeSum: A Large Dialect-Aware Romanian News Dataset for Summary, Headline, and Keyword Generation

Abstract

Using supervised automatic summarisation methods requires sufficient corpora that include pairs of documents and their summaries. Similarly to many tasks in natural language processing, most of the datasets available for summarization are in English, posing challenges for developing summarization models in other languages. Thus, in this work, we introduce RoLargeSum, a novel large-scale summarization dataset for the Romanian language crawled from various publicly available news websites from Romania and the Republic of Moldova that were thoroughly cleaned to ensure a high-quality standard. RoLargeSum contains more than 615K news articles, together with their summaries, as well as their headlines, keywords, dialect, and other metadata that we found on the targeted websites. We further evaluated the performance of several BART variants and open-source large language models on RoLargeSum for benchmarking purposes. We manually evaluated the results of the best-performing system to gain insight into the potential pitfalls of this data set and future development., Comment: Accepted at COLING 2024 (long papers)

2. Investigating synergies between chemical reaction networks (CRN) and mathematical epidemiology (ME), using the Mathematica package Epid-CRN

Abstract

In this essay, we investigate some relations between Chemical Reaction Networks (CRN) and Mathematical Epidemiology (ME) and report on several pleasant surprises which we had simply by putting these two topics together. Firstly, we propose a definition of ME models as a subset of CRN models. Secondly, we review a fundamental stability result for boundary points, known in ME as the NGM method since it replaces the investigation of the Jacobian by that of a matrix whose origins lie in probability (the theory of branching processes). This important result seems to be little known outside of ME; even in ME, it has not been made clear before that the method gets sometimes the right answer, even though the conditions of the NGM theorem are not all satisfied. Thus, beyond the theorem, there is a heuristic approach, the validity conditions for which are not sufficiently understood. Thirdly, we show that some simple CRN models with absolute concentration robustness (ACR), are close qualitatively to simple ME models, in the sense that they have an unique disease free equilibrium, and a unique interior fixed point, and the latter enters the positive domain and becomes stable precisely when $R_0:=s_{dfe} \mathcal{R}=\frac{s_{dfe}}{s_e}>1.$ (where $s$ denotes the "ACR species"). Thus, for these "ME type models", a "relay phenomena" takes place: precisely when the DFE loses stability, a new fixed point enters the domain, and takes over. Last but not least, we offer in the associated GitHub repository https://github.com/adhalanay/epidemiology_crns a Mathematica package, Epid-CRN, which is addressed to researchers of both disciplines, and provide illustrative notebooks, which in particular solve a few minor open ME and CRN problems. Our package may also be used to study easy cases of analogue continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) ME and CRN models.

3. Advancing Mathematical Epidemiology and Chemical Reaction Network Theory via Synergies Between Them

Abstract

Our paper reviews some key concepts in chemical reaction network theory and mathematical epidemiology, and examines their intersection, with three goals. The first is to make the case that mathematical epidemiology (ME), and also related sciences like population dynamics, virology, ecology, etc., could benefit by adopting the universal language of essentially non-negative kinetic systems as developed by chemical reaction network (CRN) researchers. In this direction, our investigation of the relations between CRN and ME lead us to propose for the first time a definition of ME models, stated in Open Problem 1. Our second goal is to inform researchers outside ME of the convenient next generation matrix (NGM) approach for studying the stability of boundary points, which do not seem suficiently well known. Last but not least, we want to help students and researchers who know nothing about either ME or CRN to learn them quickly, by offering them a Mathematica package "BootCamp", located at https://github.com/adhalanay/epidemiology_crns, including illustrating notebooks (and certain sections below will contain associated suggested notebooks; however, readers with experience may safely skip the bootcamp). We hope that the files indicated in the titles of various sections will be helpful, though of course improvement is always possible, and we ask the help of the readers for that.

4. RELATE: A Modern Processing Platform for Romanian Language

Abstract

This paper presents the design and evolution of the RELATE platform. It provides a high-performance environment for natural language processing activities, specially constructed for Romanian language. Initially developed for text processing, it has been recently updated to integrate audio processing tools. Technical details are provided with regard to core components. We further present different usage scenarios, derived from actual use in national and international research projects, thus demonstrating that RELATE is a mature, modern, state-of-the-art platform for processing Romanian language corpora. Finally, we present very recent developments including bimodal (text and audio) features available within the platform.

5. RoQLlama: A Lightweight Romanian Adapted Language Model

Abstract

The remarkable achievements obtained by open-source large language models (LLMs) in recent years have predominantly been concentrated on tasks involving the English language. In this paper, we aim to advance the performance of Llama2 models on Romanian tasks. We tackle the problem of reduced computing resources by using QLoRA for training. We release RoQLlama-7b, a quantized LLM, which shows equal or improved results compared to its full-sized counterpart when tested on seven Romanian downstream tasks in the zero-shot setup. Also, it consistently achieves higher average scores across all few-shot prompts. 7. Do Cure Violence Programs Reduce Gun Violence? Evidence from New York City

Abstract

Cure Violence is a community violence intervention program that aims to reduce gun violence by mediating conflicts, "treating" high-risk individuals, and changing community norms. Using NYC shootings data from 2006-2023, we assess the efficacy of Cure Violence using both difference-in-differences and event study models. We find that, on average, Cure Violence is associated with a 14% reduction in shootings relative to the counterfactual. This association persists in the years after treatment, neither increasing nor decreasing much over time. We exploit variation in the geography and timing of Cure implementation to argue against alternative explanations. Additionally, we find suggestive evidence of spillover effects into nearby precincts, as well as increasing returns to opening new Cure programs. Interpreted causally, our results imply that around 1,300 shootings were avoided between 2012-2023 due to Cure -- generating a net social surplus of $2.45 billion and achieving a benefit-cost ratio of 6.5:1.

8. Finding bifurcations in mathematical epidemiology via reaction network methods

Abstract

Mathematical Epidemiology (ME) shares with Chemical Reaction Network Theory (CRNT) the basic mathematical structure of its dynamical systems. Despite this central similarity, methods from CRNT have been seldom applied to solving problems in ME. We explore here the applicability of CRNT methods to find bifurcations at endemic equilibria of ME models. We adapt three CRNT methods to the features of ME. First, we prove that essentially all ME models admit Hopf bifurcations for certain monotone choices of the interaction functions. Second, we offer a parametrization of equilibria Jacobians of ME systems where few interactions are not in mass action form. Third, for a quite general class of models, we show that periodic oscillations in closed systems imply periodic oscillations when demography is added. Finally, we apply such results to two families of networks: a general SIR model with a nonlinear force of infection and treatment rate and a recent SIRnS model with a gradual increase in infectiousness. Abstract

Background: Decision-making alterations are present in psychiatric illnesses like major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD), and schizophrenia, linked to symptoms of the respective disorders. We sought to analyze unique and shared decision-making alterations in these disorders, which is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment, especially given potential comorbidities. Methods: Using 2 computational modelling approaches--logistic regression and hierarchical Bayesian modelling--we analyzed alterations in model-based and model-free decision-making in a transdiagnostic cohort of patients with MDD, OCD, or schizophrenia. Our aim was to identify disorder-specific and shared alterations and their associations with symptoms. Results: We included 23 patients with MDD, 25 patients with OCD, 27 patients with schizophrenia, and 25 controls. Overall, participants of all groups relied on model-free decision-making. Patients with schizophrenia had the lowest learning rate and highest switching rate, indicating low perseverance. Furthermore, patients with OCD were more random in both task stages than controls and patients with MDD. All patient groups exhibited more randomness in responses than controls, with the schizophrenia group showing the highest levels. Increased model- free behaviour correlated with elevated depressive symptoms, and more model-based decision-making was linked to lower anhedonia levels across all patient groups. Limitations: The sample size in each group was small. Conclusion: This study highlights disorder-specific and shared decision-making alterations among people with MDD, OCD, or schizophrenia. Our findings suggest that anhedonia and depressive symptoms, which are present in all 3 disorders, share underlying behavioural mechanisms. Improving model-based behaviour may be a target for intervention and treatment. Abstract

This work introduces HistNERo, the first Romanian corpus for Named Entity Recognition (NER) in historical newspapers. The dataset contains 323k tokens of text, covering more than half of the 19th century (i.e., 1817) until the late part of the 20th century (i.e., 1990). Eight native Romanian speakers annotated the dataset with five named entities. The samples belong to one of the following four historical regions of Romania, namely Bessarabia, Moldavia, Transylvania, and Wallachia. We employed this proposed dataset to perform several experiments for NER using Romanian pre-trained language models. Our results show that the best model achieved a strict F1-score of 55.69%. Also, by reducing the discrepancies between regions through a novel domain adaption technique, we improved the performance on this corpus to a strict F1-score of 66.80%, representing an absolute gain of more than 10%., Comment: Accepted at the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR 2024)

Abstract

In this note, we present a simple proof of an analogue of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality relevant to products of determinants. Specifically, we show that $$ |\det(A^*MB)|^2\leq \det(A^*MA)\cdot \det(B^*MB),\quad A,B\in \mathbb{C}^{m\times n},$$ where $M\in\mathbb{C}^{m\times m}$ is hermitian positive definite. Here $m$ and $n$ are arbitrary. In case $m\leq n$, equality holds trivially. Equality holds when $m>n$ and $\text{rank}(A)=\text{rank}(B)=n$ if and only if the columns of $A$ and the columns of $B$ span the same subspace of $\mathbb{C}^m$., Comment: 7

Abstract

Deficits in memory performance have been linked to a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. While many studies have assessed the memory impacts of individual conditions, this study considers a broader perspective by evaluating how memory recall is differentially associated with nine common neuropsychiatric conditions using data drawn from 55 international studies, aggregating 15,883 unique participants aged 15-90. The effects of dementia, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinsons disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder on immediate, short-, and long-delay verbal learning and memory (VLM) scores were estimated relative to matched healthy individuals. Random forest models identified age, years of education, and site as important VLM covariates. A Bayesian harmonization approach was used to isolate and remove site effects. Regression estimated the adjusted association of each clinical group with VLM scores. Memory deficits were strongly associated with dementia and schizophrenia (p < 0.001), while neither depression nor ADHD showed consistent associations with VLM scores (p > 0.05). Differences associated with clinical conditions were larger for longer delayed recall duration items. By comparing VLM across clinical conditions, this study provides a foundation for enhanced diagnostic precision and offers new insights into disease management of comorbid disorders.

27. Evaluation of stenoses using AI video models applied to coronary angiography.

Abstract

The coronary angiogram is the gold standard for evaluating the severity of coronary artery disease stenoses. Presently, the assessment is conducted visually by cardiologists, a method that lacks standardization. This study introduces DeepCoro, a ground-breaking AI-driven pipeline that integrates advanced vessel tracking and a video-based Swin3D model that was trained and validated on a dataset comprised of 182,418 coronary angiography videos spanning 5 years. DeepCoro achieved a notable precision of 71.89% in identifying coronary artery segments and demonstrated a mean absolute error of 20.15% (95% CI: 19.88-20.40) and a classification AUROC of 0.8294 (95% CI: 0.8215-0.8373) in stenosis percentage prediction compared to traditional cardiologist assessments. When compared to two expert interventional cardiologists, DeepCoro achieved lower variability than the clinical reports (19.09%; 95% CI: 18.55-19.58 vs 21.00%; 95% CI: 20.20-21.76, respectively). In addition, DeepCoro can be fine-tuned to a different modality type. When fine-tuned on quantitative coronary angiography assessments, DeepCoro attained an even lower mean absolute error of 7.75% (95% CI: 7.37-8.07), underscoring the reduced variability inherent to this method. This study establishes DeepCoro as an innovative video-based, adaptable tool in coronary artery disease analysis, significantly enhancing the precision and reliability of stenosis assessment.

Abstract

This letter introduces LYT-Net, a novel lightweight transformer-based model for low-light image enhancement (LLIE). LYT-Net consists of several layers and detachable blocks, including our novel blocks--Channel-Wise Denoiser (CWD) and Multi-Stage Squeeze & Excite Fusion (MSEF)--along with the traditional Transformer block, Multi-Headed Self-Attention (MHSA). In our method we adopt a dual-path approach, treating chrominance channels U and V and luminance channel Y as separate entities to help the model better handle illumination adjustment and corruption restoration. Our comprehensive evaluation on established LLIE datasets demonstrates that, despite its low complexity, our model outperforms recent LLIE methods. Cartea Valorificarea Stațiunilor Balneo-Climatice-Maritime. Ediție Interbelică este o inițiativă a profesioniștilor din domeniul turismului din perioada interbelică pentru dezvoltarea și promovarea turismului maritim de cură de la Marea Neagră din România. Lucrarea argumentează necesitatea înființării societății Balneo Climatica SA având în vedere resursele naturale unice din România și potențialul dovedit încă de atunci de a atrage turiști străini la Marea Neagră pentru tratament. In prefața cărții, se specifică calitatea climatului de la Marea Neagră, considerată superioară celei din țări ca Spania și Italia. Conform autorilor, litoralul Mării Negre are o superioritate incontestabilă din punct de vedere al valorii terapeutice, precum climatul unic și prezența lacurilor cu nămol terapeutic. Autorul prefeței specifică ”Marea Neagră are o superioritate incontestabilă din punct de vedere al valorii terapeutice al litoralului său”.

Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

Qubits based on ions trapped in linear radio-frequency traps form a successful platform for quantum computing, due to their high fidelity of operations, all-to-all connectivity and degree of local control. In principle there is no fundamental limit to the number of ion-based qubits that can be confined in a single 1D register. However, in practice there are two main issues associated with long trapped-ion crystals, that stem from the 'softening' of their modes of motion, upon scaling up: high heating rates of the ions' motion, and a dense motional spectrum; both impede the performance of high-fidelity qubit operations. Here we propose a holistic, scalable architecture for quantum computing with large ion-crystals that overcomes these issues. Our method relies on dynamically-operated optical potentials, that instantaneously segment the ion-crystal into cells of a manageable size. We show that these cells behave as nearly independent quantum registers, allowing for parallel entangling gates on all cells. The ability to reconfigure the optical potentials guarantees connectivity across the full ion-crystal, and also enables efficient mid-circuit measurements. We study the implementation of large-scale parallel multi-qubit entangling gates that operate simultaneously on all cells, and present a protocol to compensate for crosstalk errors, enabling full-scale usage of an extensively large register. We illustrate that this architecture is advantageous both for fault-tolerant digital quantum computation and for analog quantum simulations.

Abstract

This paper examines the impact of digitalization and sustainability on corporate governance in Romania and the European Union. The study paper compares the digital progress of Romania with other European countries, using different specific indexes such as EGDI, SDG Index, ICT Development Index, and DESI indicators. Even if Romania is making progress regarding digital transformation and is involved in many programs that see an increase in digitalization, the results obtained in this paper show a low level compared to other countries from the EU. Romania has problems with cybersecurity, digital infrastructure, and digital inclusiveness. To increase its level of digitalization and sustainability, along with this level of corporate governance, it should be inspired by the good practices that North European countries adopted. So, with the integration of good strategies of corporate governance and measures of digitalization, this country can accelerate its transition to the best countries that have already achieved good results, creating this way a pathway to achieving objectives of sustainable development.

45. Written Language: A Promising Gateway to Anxiety Disorders Assessment

Abstract

Currently, self-report measures are the primary assessment tool for anxiety disorders. Since they have some limitations, alternative measurements, such as language-based measures, are worth investigating. This paper explores which language markers signal anxiety in fictitious stories written in response to four Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) cards. Participants (n = 492) from a non-probabilistic convenience sample were asked to write a short story next to each TAT card after completing the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7. We used RoLIWC2015 to conduct the text analysis and applied the LASSO method to identify which language markers predict anxiety. The results showed that the respondents scoring high on anxiety also tend to use more words expressing negative emotions, and fewer words expressing positive emotions. Moreover, their language contained a higher frequency of words that implied semantic differentiation (i.e., but, else) and a lower frequency of words indicating leisure. In conclusion, this paper aims to shed new light on the multimethod assessment of anxiety, mainly focused on specific language signatures as reliable predictors of anxiety symptoms. Further research using more extensive text data is recommended to discover more linguistic markers and improve prediction accuracy.

Abstract

This paper generalizes and corrects a famous paper (more than 200 citations) concerning Hopf and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations due to L. Zhou and M. Fan, "Dynamics of an SIR epidemic model with limited medical resources revisited", in which we discovered a significant numerical error. Importantly, unlike the paper of Zhou and Fan and several other papers that followed them, we offer a notebook where the reader may recover all the results and modify them for analyzing similar models. Our calculations lead to the introduction of some interesting symbolic objects, "Groebner eliminated traces and determinants" - see (4.5), (4.6), which seem to have appeared here for the first time and which might be of independent interest. We hope our paper might serve as yet another alarm bell regarding the importance of accompanying papers involving complicated hand computations by electronic notebooks.

This work addresses this shortcoming by analyzing several architectures and optimizations on the underrepresented, short-scale Romanian language dataset called Wild LRRo. Most notably, we compare different backend modules, demonstrating the effectiveness of adding ample regularization methods. We obtain state-of-the-art results using our proposed method, namely cross-lingual domain adaptation and unlabeled videos from English and German datasets to help the model learn language-invariant features. Abstract

Surgical masks have played a crucial role in healthcare facilities to protect against respiratory and infectious diseases, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the synthetic fibers, mainly made of polypropylene, used in their production may adversely affect the environment and human health. Recent studies have confirmed the presence of microplastics and fibers in human lungs and have related these synthetic particles with the occurrence of pulmonary ground glass nodules. Using a piston system to simulate human breathing, this study investigates the role of surgical masks as a direct source of inhalation of microplastics. Results reveal the release of particles of sizes ranging from nanometers (300 nm) to millimeters (~2 mm) during normal breathing conditions, raising concerns about the potential health risks. Notably, large visible particles (> 1 mm) were observed to be ejected from masks with limited wear after only a few breathing cycles. Given the widespread use of masks by healthcare workers and the potential future need for mask usage by the general population during seasonal infectious diseases or new pandemics, developing face masks using safe materials for both users and the environment is imperative., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Carriers of the 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants exhibit regional and global brain differences compared with noncarriers. However, interpreting regional differences is challenging if a global difference drives the regional brain differences. Intraindividual variability measures can be used to test for regional differences beyond global differences in brain structure. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging data were used to obtain regional brain values for 1q21.1 distal deletion (n = 30) and duplication (n = 27) and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 deletion (n = 170) and duplication (n = 243) carriers and matched noncarriers (n = 2350). Regional intra-deviation scores, i.e., the standardized difference between an individuals regional difference and global difference, were used to test for regional differences that diverge from the global difference. RESULTS: For the 1q21.1 distal deletion carriers, cortical surface area for regions in the medial visual cortex, posterior cingulate, and temporal pole differed less and regions in the prefrontal and superior temporal cortex differed more than the global difference in cortical surface area. For the 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 deletion carriers, cortical thickness in regions in the medial visual cortex, auditory cortex, and temporal pole differed less and the prefrontal and somatosensory cortex differed more than the global difference in cortical thickness. CONCLUSIONS: We find evidence for regional effects beyond differences in global brain measures in 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants. The results provide new insight into brain profiling of the 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants, with the potential to increase understanding of the mechanisms involved in altered neurodevelopment.

50. E-FAST Ultrasound Training Curriculum for Prehospital Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Clinicians

Abstract

Audience and Type of Curriculum: Audience and type of curriculum: This hybrid, asynchronous curriculum is designed for prehospital clinician colleagues, including but not limited to emergency medical technicians (EMT), advanced EMTs (AEMT), EMT-paramedics (EMT-P), critical care EMT-Ps (CCEMTP), critical care transport nurses (CCTN), and certified flight registered nurses (CFRN) to learn and practice ultrasound fundamentals in the setting of a standardized extended focused assessment with sonography in trauma (E- FAST) exam.Length of Curriculum: Over a five-month curriculum, learners will perform a pre-test, review online module lectures, attend an ultrasound scanning workshop, and perform post-test examinations.Introduction: The extended-focused assessment with sonography in trauma (E-FAST) exam can identify intrathoracic and intraabdominal free fluid, as well as pneumothoraces. The E-FAST ultrasound exam has previously been taught to clinicians of various backgrounds in healthcare including emergency medical service (EMS). However, an open-access, systemized curriculum for teaching E-FAST exams to EMS clinicians has not been published.Educational Goals: By the end of these training activities, prehospital EMS learners will be able to demonstrate foundational ultrasound skills in scanning, interpretation, and artifact recognition by identifying pertinent organs and anatomically relevant structures for an E-FAST examination. Learners will differentiate between normal and pathologic E-FAST ultrasound images by identifying the presence of free fluid and lung sliding. Learners will also explain the clinical significance and application of detecting free fluid during an E- FAST scan.Educational Methods: The educational strategies used in this curriculum include a hybrid, asynchronous curriculum encompassing 2.5 hours of lectures derived from online learning modules and in-person review. In addition, learners will attend 2 hours of hands-on proctored ultrasound scanning practicing E-FAST examinations.Research Methods: An online 13-question pre-test was administered prior to the study. An online post-test and in-person scanning OSCEs were administered at least eight weeks after their scheduled workshop consisting of an online 13-question multiple-choice post-test, a confidence survey, and a hands-on E-FAST Objectively Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) session. A non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed between each pre-test and post-test metric to examine the statistical differences of paired data.Results: Post-test scores demonstrated statistically significant improvement in both image interpretation exams and ultrasound self-efficacy from the pre-test. The mean pre-test and post-test scores were 55.46% (7.21 ± 1.99) and 84.23% (10.89 ± 1.59) correct out of 13 questions, respectively (p < 0.0001). Participants surveyed an increase in self-efficacy reflected by a Likert scale for ultrasound usage and image interpretation (p < 0.005).
