En el presente estudio se han revisado las historias clínicas de 10 caballos ingresados en el Servicio de Medicina y Cirugía Equina del Hospital Clínico Veterinario de la Universidad de Murcia en los que, ya sea como motivo de consulta principal, o como acompañamiento a cualquier otra patología, han requerido de una endoscopia de las vías aéreas altas durante el curso académico 2014/2015, por presentar todos ellos síntomas respiratorios, siendo estos pacientes el 4,01% del total de casos del Servicio. Se ha observado que 9/10 (90%) de los animales revisados fueron machos, que 6/10 (60%) superaba los 10 años de edad y que 5/10 (50%) pacientes pertenecían a la raza Pura Raza Español (P.R.E), mientras que el 5/10 (50%) restante pertenecían a razas de gran alzada, como Frisón, Koninklijk Warmbloed Paard Nederland (KWPN) y Hols-teiner. Se ha determinado que la hemiplejia laríngea izquierda fue la patología más prevalente en este grupo de animales presentándose en 6/10 (60%) casos, de los cuales 3/6 (50%) resultó pertenecer a la raza P.R.E. De estos animales positivos a hemiplejia laríngea, 6/6 (100%) fueron machos, y 4/6 (67%) superaba el rango de afectación esperado, entre 2 y 5 años, para esta patología. Dos de los seis afectados (33%) se sometieron a cirugía, resultando la misma muy satisfactoria. En cuanto al impacto económico, las hemiplejias laríngeas supusieron el 83,54% de lo recaudado por las afecciones de vías aéreas superiores que requirieron endosco-pia, las cuales tuvieron un peso económico del 6,5% en el montante total recaudado por el servicio Medicina y Cirugía Equina durante este periodo. Estos datos reafirman que la técnica diagnóstica endoscópica aumenta la calidad de los diagnósticos efectuados y de forma directa e indirecta incrementa también los ingresos veterinarios. ABSTRACT: This is a retrospective research in which we have analyzed the medical records of 10 horses admitted to the Equine Medicine and Surgery Service of the Veterinary Hospital (Murcia University) during the academic course 2014/2015, which have required an endoscopy of the upper airways, due to respiratory symptoms presented in all of them, that pointed to a problem in the upper airways. It has been observed that 90 % of the studied animals were males, that 60 % were older than 10 years old and that 50 % of patients were P.R.E. (Spanish bred), the other 50% belonged to high-rise breeds as Frison, KWPN and Holsteiner. It has been determined that left laryngeal hemiplegia was the most prevalent disease in this group of animals with a percentage of 60 % from the total cases. Of this percentage, 50 % were Spanish-bred (P.R.E), being the other 50% Frisón and Holsteiner. The 100 % of patients were males, and 67 % were out of the expected and previously observed range of the affectation age, between 2 and 5 years, for this pathology. About the surgeries, the prosthetic laryngoplasty and ventriculocordectomy was practiced on 33 % of affected patients, and the results were very satisfactory. In terms of economic impact, laryngeal hemiplegia accounted for 83.54 % of the cases from the upper airways conditions requiring endoscopy, which had a 6.5% economic weight in the total revenues collected by the Equine Medicine and Surgery Service of the Clinical Veterinary Hospital during this period. These data reaffirms the usefulness of endoscopic technique in equine medicine, since it not only increases the quality of the diagnoses, but it also increases directly and indirectly the veterinarian incomes.

A retrospective study was carried out in 26 dogs referred to the Internal Medicine Service (Endoscopy Unit) of the Clinical Veterinary Hospital of Murcia University, diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease affecting the anterior gastrointestinal tract. Haematological, endoscopic and pathologic findings were considered to assess potential correlation between these parameters. Neither hypoproteinemia nor hypoalbuminemia had a significant correlation with the degree of inflammation in the gastrointestinal mucosa. However, the animals with a lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate, presented a tendency to hypoalbuminemia. A statistically significant correlation (P < 0.05) was found between the type of infiltrate and the finding of congestion in gastroduodenal mucosa. An increased congestion was related to the lymphoplasmocytary infiltrate. There was also a correlation between the degree of congestion and the infiltrate intensity in the gastroduodenal mucosa, which approximated to the statistical significance, in spite of not being statistically significant (P < 0.1). In addition, friability is associated with inflammation in duodenum, and the animals who did not have a proper closure of the cardia presented esophagitis by reflux. &nbsp, Se ha realizado un estudio retrospectivo a 26 perros, machos y hembras, que acudieron al Servicio de Medicina Interna (Unidad de Endoscopia) del Hospital Clínico Veterinario de la Facultad de Veterinaria de la Universidad de Murcia (España), a los que se les diagnosticó enfermedad inflamatoria crónica intestinal del tracto gastrointestinal anterior. Los casos se eligieron en función del diagnóstico clínico, endoscópico y anatomopatológico realizado, con el objetivo de evaluar potenciales correlaciones entre estos parámetros. La disminución de proteínas totales y la albúmina no fue estadísticamente significativa en relación con el grado de inflamación de la mucosa gastrointestinal, no obstante, los animales que presentaban un infiltrado de tipo linfoplasmocitario tenían tendencia a la pérdida de albúmina. Se encontró una correlación estadísticamente significativa (P < 0,05) entre el tipo de infiltrado y la presencia de congestión en la mucosa de estómago y duodeno. Una mayor congestión a estos niveles se corresponde con el infiltrado linfoplasmocitario. También se obtuvo un resultado que, a pesar de no ser estadísticamente significativo, sí se aproxima a la significación estadística (P < 0,1) entre el grado de congestión y la intensidad del infiltrado, ya que un grado de congestión mayor de la mucosa se corresponde con una mayor intensidad de infiltrado linfoplasmocitario, tanto a nivel gástrico como duodenal. Además se vio que la friabilidad está asociada a inflamación en duodeno, y los animales que no tenían un correcto cierre del cardias presentaban esofagitis por reflujo. &nbsp

Un perro de 3 años de edad, macho, raza Pomerania, es remitido al Hospital Clínico Veterinario con signos de disfagia esofágica desde hace tres días, coincidiendo con la aparición de una botella de fertilizante mordida. El fertilizante es un álcali. La analítica sanguínea, la radiografía simple torácica y el esofagograma de contraste torácico no evidencian alteraciones. Se realiza la esofagoscopia y el diagnóstico definitivo es estenosis esofágica, acompañada de inflamación y un grado grave de daño en la mucosa. Como terapéutica para resolver la estenosis se lleva a cabo el tratamiento de elección, que es la dilatación con balón guiada endoscópicamente, donde se realizan varias dilataciones con el mismo procedimiento. Posteriormente, se instaura un tratamiento médico-dietético para resolver la inflamación esofágica y conseguir la recuperación sistémica del animal. La evolución del paciente es favorable, dejando de presentar los signos clínicos, aunque se mantiene un tratamiento dietético a base de dieta húmeda. En este artículo se incluye un caso completo de una de las causas propuestas como posibles desencadenantes de estenosis esofágica o, al menos, de esofagitis grave.

Invadopodia are proteolytically active membrane protrusions that extend from the ventral surface of invasive tumoral cells grown on an extracellular matrix (ECM). The core machinery controlling invadopodia biogenesis is regulated by the Rho GTPase Cdc42. To understand the upstream events regulating invadopodia biogenesis, we investigated the role of Fgd1, a Cdc42-specific guanine nucleotide exchange factor. Loss of Fgd1 causes the rare inherited human developmental disease faciogenital dysplasia. Here, we show that Fgd1 is required for invadopodia biogenesis and ECM degradation in an invasive cell model and functions by modulation of Cdc42 activation. We also find that Fgd1 is expressed in human prostate and breast cancer as opposed to normal tissue and that expression levels matched tumor aggressiveness. Our findings suggest a central role for Fgd1 in the focal degradation of the ECM in vitro and, for the first time, show a connection between Fgd1 and cancer progression, proposing that it might function during tumorigenesis.

Mutations in the FGD1 gene are responsible for the X-linked disorder known as faciogenital dysplasia (FGDY). FGD1 encodes a guanine nucleotide exchange factor that specifically activates the GTPase Cdc42. In turn, Cdc42 is an important regulator of membrane trafficking, although little is known about FGD1 involvement in this process. During development, FGD1 is highly expressed during bone growth and mineralization, and therefore a lack of the functional protein leads to a severe phenotype. Whether the secretion of proteins, which is a process essential for bone formation, is altered by mutations in FGD1 is of great interest. We initially show here that FGD1 is preferentially associated with the trans-Golgi network (TGN), suggesting its involvement in export of proteins from the Golgi. Indeed, expression of a dominant-negative FGD1 mutant and RNA interference of FGD1 both resulted in a reduction in post-Golgi transport of various cargoes (including bone-specific proteins in osteoblasts). Live-cell imaging reveals that formation of post-Golgi transport intermediates directed to the cell surface is inhibited in FGD1-deficient cells, apparently due to an impairment of TGN membrane extension along microtubules. These effects depend on FGD1 regulation of Cdc42 activation and its association with the Golgi membranes and they may contribute to FGDY pathogenesis
