On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G_{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G_{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.075001]. This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based on fundamental physics principles, is possible. This Letter reports on the target, laser, design, and experimental advancements that led to this result.

A study on the neutron production from single and double gas puff Z-pinches on the CESZAR linear transformer driver with ∼0.45 MA current and 170 ns rise time is presented. Total neutron yield measurements made with a LaBr activation detector are compared for three configurations, using a double nozzle setup. When a single, hollow, deuterium gas shell was used, reliable implosions could only be attained at higher load mass than the optimal value to match implosion time with the driver rise time, with neutron yields of ∼106 per pulse. The use of a double gas puff configuration with a deuterium center jet allowed a reduction in the shell density and operation closer to machine-matched conditions, recording up to (4.1 ± 0.3) × 107 neutrons/pulse when either Kr or D2 was used in the shell. For a comparable mass and implosion time, using a higher atomic-number gas in the outer shell results in more unstable plasma surface and smaller plasma radius at the location of instability bubbles, which, however, do not seem to consistently correlate with a higher neutron yield. Comparing implosion dynamics with models and neutron yields with literature scaling suggests that the machine current is not well coupled to the plasma during the final stages of compression. Optimizing current and energy coupling to the pinched plasma is critical to improving performance, particularly in low-impedance drivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Azimuthal magnetic field measurements obtained during the implosion phase of an oxygen gas-puff Z-pinch on a 500 kA peak current and 180 ns rise time linear transformer driver are presented. While a fraction of the driver current was measured within the imploding plasma, key initial conditions were found to significantly impact the delivery of current to the plasma load. The electrode geometry was modified to assist the initial dielectric breakdown and resulted in improved shot reproducibility. Optimization of the gas injection plenum pressure and timing resulted in an increase in the current coupling parameter, defined as the ratio of the measured value of B θ to the expected value, from 50% to 75%. The degree of radial expansion of the gas puff in the load region, which is suspected to lead to the observed current loss during the implosion, was reduced by shortening the valve opening duration. Additionally, a pre-embedded axial magnetic field of up to 0.2 T was found to have no significant impact on the plasma-current coupling of the oxygen implosions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The predicted implosion performance of deuterium-tritium fuel capsules in indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion experiments relies on precise calculations of the x-ray drive in laser-heated cavities (hohlraums). This requires accurate, spectrally dependent simulations of laser to x-ray conversion efficiencies and x-ray absorption losses to the hohlraum wall. A set of National Ignition Facility experiments have identified a cause for the long-standing hohlraum "drive deficit" as the overprediction of gold emission at ∼2.5 keV in nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium coronal plasma regions within the hohlraum. Reducing the emission and absorption opacity in this spectral region by ∼20% brings simulations into agreement with measured x-ray fluxes and spectra.
