Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of $\nu_\mu$ disappearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of $2.74 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure $\Delta m^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at $\sin^2\theta_{23} = $ 0.43 and 0.60. Abstract

We report results from the first search for $\nu_\mu\to\nu_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to $2.74\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of $0.99\pm0.11$ (syst.) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of $1.07\pm0.14$ (syst.). The $3.3\sigma$ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors $0.1\pi < \delta_{CP} < 0.5\pi$ in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. This paper describes the hardware and operations of the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam at Fermilab. It elaborates on the design considerations for the beam as a whole and for individual elements. The most important design details of individual components are described. Beam monitoring systems and procedures, including the tuning and alignment of the beam and NuMI long-term performance, are also discussed.

Abstract

We report an improved measurement of muon anti-neutrino disappearance over a distance of 735km using the MINOS detectors and the Fermilab Main Injector neutrino beam in a muon anti-neutrino enhanced configuration. From a total exposure of 2.95e20 protons on target, of which 42% have not been previously analyzed, we make the most precise measurement of the anti-neutrino "atmospheric" delta-m squared = 2.62 +0.31/-0.28 (stat.) +/- 0.09 (syst.) and constrain the anti-neutrino atmospheric mixing angle >0.75 (90%CL). These values are in agreement with those measured for muon neutrinos, removing the tension reported previously., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. In submission to Phys.Rev.Lett

Abstract

We have searched for sidereal variations in the rate of antineutrino interactions in the MINOS Near Detector. Using antineutrinos produced by the NuMI beam, we find no statistically significant sidereal modulation in the rate. When this result is placed in the context of the Standard Model Extension theory we are able to place upper limits on the coefficients defining the theory. These limits are used in combination with the results from an earlier analysis of MINOS neutrino data to further constrain the coefficients., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

We report constraints on antineutrino oscillation parameters that were obtained by using the two MINOS detectors to measure the 7% muon antineutrino component of the NuMI neutrino beam. In the Far Detector, we select 130 events in the charged-current muon antineutrino sample, compared to a prediction of 136.4 +/- 11.7(stat) ^{+10.2}_{-8.9}(syst) events under the assumption |dm2bar|=2.32x10^-3 eV^2, snthetabar=1.0. Abstract

We report the results of a search for $\nu_{e}$ appearance in a $\nu_{\mu}$ beam in the MINOS long-baseline neutrino experiment. With an improved analysis and an increased exposure of $8.2\times10^{20}$ protons on the NuMI target at Fermilab, we find that $2\sin^2(\theta_{23})\sin^2(2\theta_{13})<0.12\ (0.20)$ at 90% confidence level for $\delta\mathord{=}0$ and the normal (inverted) neutrino mass hierarchy, with a best fit of $2\sin^2(\theta_{23})\sin^2(2\theta_{13})\,\mathord{=}\,0.041^{+0.047}_{-0.031}\ (0.079^{+0.071}_{-0.053})$. Abstract

Results are reported from a search for active to sterile neutrino oscillations in the MINOS long-baseline experiment, based on the observation of neutral-current neutrino interactions, from an exposure to the NuMI neutrino beam of $7.07\times10^{20}$ protons on target. A total of 802 neutral-current event candidates is observed in the Far Detector, compared to an expected number of $754\pm28\rm{(stat.)}\pm{37}\rm{(syst.)}$ for oscillations among three active flavors. Abstract

This letter reports the first direct observation of muon antineutrino disappearance. The MINOS experiment has taken data with an accelerator beam optimized for muon antineutrino production, accumulating an exposure of $1.71\times 10^{20}$ protons on target. In the Far Detector, 97 charged current muon antineutrino events are observed. The no-oscillation hypothesis predicts 156 events and is excluded at $6.3\sigma$. The best fit to oscillation yields $\Delta \bar{m}^{2}=(3.36^{+0.46}_{-0.40}\textrm{(stat.)}\pm0.06\textrm{(syst.)})\times 10^{-3}\,\eV^{2}$, $\sin^{2}(2\bar{\theta})=0.86^{+0.11}_{-0.12}\textrm{(stat.)}\pm0.01\textrm{(syst.)}$. Abstract

Measurements of neutrino oscillations using the disappearance of muon neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam as observed by the two MINOS detectors are reported. New analysis methods have been applied to an enlarged data sample from an exposure of $7.25 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. A fit to neutrino oscillations yields values of $|\Delta m^2| = (2.32^{+0.12}_{-0.08})\times10^{-3}$\,eV$^2$ for the atmospheric mass splitting and $\rm \sin^2\!(2\theta) > 0.90$ (90%\,C.L.) for the mixing angle. Abstract

We searched for a sidereal modulation in the MINOS far detector neutrino rate. Such a signal would be a consequence of Lorentz and CPT violation as described by the Standard-Model Extension framework. It also would be the first detection of a perturbative effect to conventional neutrino mass oscillations. We found no evidence for this sidereal signature and the upper limits placed on the magnitudes of the Lorentz and CPT violating coefficients describing the theory are an improvement by factors of $20-510$ over the current best limits found using the MINOS near detector., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

This is an updated version of the NOvA proposal. The detector is a 30 kiloton tracking calorimeter, 15.7 m by 15.7 m by 132 m long, with alternating horizontal and vertical rectangular cells of liquid scintillator contained in PVC extrusion modules. Light from each 15.7 m long cell of liquid scintillator filled PVC is collected by a wavelength shifting fiber and routed to an avalanche photodiode pixel. The reach of NOvA for sin^2(2_theta_13) and related topics is increased relative to earlier versions of the proposal with the assumption of increased protons available from the Fermilab Main Injector following the end of Tevatron Collider operations in 2009., Comment: 112 pages

Abstract

The atmospheric neutrino flavour ratio measured using a 1.52 kton-year exposure of Soudan 2 is found to be 0.72 +- 0.19 +0.05 -0.07 relative to the expected value from a Monte Carlo calculation. 14. Dynamics and Ecosystem threats of Bidirectional Cordgrass Hybridization in San Francisco Bay

Abstract

Hybrids between alien cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora, introduced in the 1970s, and native California cordgrass, S. foliosa are a menace to the ecology of San Francisco Bay, spreading to aggressively invade open mud, displacing native species, hindering flood control, navigation, and other uses of this habitat. We proposed to determine the key elements of the ecology of the hybrid cordgrass invasion: ecological amplitude of parental species and hybrids, dynamics of seedling movement and recruitment, and broad spread of hybrids around the Bay and up the Sacramento Delta. Our previous field and molecular work suggested that vigorous hybrids grow taller and more densely than either parental species; they should have greatest competitive abilities and tidal range. To experimentally compare ecological amplitudes among cordgrass plants, we measured vegetative vigor and sexual reproduction of cordgrass genotypes planted in common gardens on the intertidal plane. To identify essential components of seedling recruitment, we planned to characterized seed movement on the tides, persistence in the soil seed bank, and germination and establishment of cordgrass genotypes in experimental field plots. To document the rate and extent of the spread of hybrids around the Bay, we annually surveyed and genetically characterized cordgrass seedlings and plants in marshes where hybrids were established as well as previously un-invaded marshes.

Abstract

This article presents some of the key findings of a mixed-method exploratory case study investigating the perceptions and realities of new teachers’ engagement in and with research. Newly qualified teachers are well prepared to engage with research literature for the development of practice, and to employ the research skills which they develop during their undergraduate degrees and their initial training programmes. In school, their research knowledge and skills are seldom put to good use, however. Should initial teacher education therefore abandon research methods modules and focus on developing the skills which enable new teachers to access and critically evaluate existing research evidence? The study employed a hybrid analytical framework (Fereday & Muir-Cochrane 2006), a three-stage process of inductive and deductive theme-generation and scrutiny.

Abstract

In 2014, a DNA-based phylogenetic study confirming the paraphyly of the grasssubtribeSporobolinaeproposed the creation of a large monophyletic genusSporobolus, includ-ing (among others) species previously included in the generaSpartina,Calamovilfa, andSporobolus. Spartinaspecies have contributed substantially (and continue contributing) to ourknowledge in multiple disciplines, including ecology, evolutionary biology, molecular biology,biogeography, experimental ecology, biological invasions, environmental management, restora-tion ecology, history, economics, and sociology. There is no rationale so compelling to subsumethe nameSpartinaas a subgenus that could rival the striking, global iconic history and use ofthe nameSpartinafor over 200 yr. We do not agree with the subjective arguments underlyingthe proposal to changeSpartinatoSporobolus.We understand the importance of both theobjective phylogenetic insights and of the subjective formalized nomenclature and hope thatby opening this debate we will encourage positive feedback that will strengthen taxonomicdecisions with an interdisciplinary perspective. We consider that the strongly distinct, mono-phyletic cladeSpartinashould simply and efficiently be treated as the genusSpartina.
