Abstract

Modeling detector response is a key challenge in time projection chambers. We cast this problem as an unpaired point cloud translation task, between data collected from simulations and from experimental runs. Effective translation can assist with both noise rejection and the construction of high-fidelity simulators. Building on recent work in diffusion probabilistic models, we present a novel framework for performing this mapping. Abstract

Static and mobile radiation detectors can be deployed in urban environments for a range of nuclear security applications, including radiological source search-and-tracking scenarios. Modeling detector performance for such applications is challenging, as it does not depend solely on the detector capabilities themselves. Many factors must be taken into consideration, including specific source and background signatures, the topology and constraints of the deployment environment, the presence of nuisance sources, and whether detectors are mobile or static. When considering the simultaneous deployment of multiple, heterogeneous detectors, assessment of the system-wide performance requires the simulation of the individual detectors, and a system-level analysis of the detection performance. In radiological source search-and-tracking scenarios, performance is mostly dominated by the probability of encounter, which depends on the specifics of a given deployment, e.g., static vs. mobile detectors or a combination of both modalities, the number of detectors deployed, the dynamic vs. static setting of false alarm rates, and individual vs. networked operation. The Urban Deployment Model (UDM) toolset was specifically developed to cover the gap in the available generic frameworks for the simulation of radiation detector deployments at city scales. UDM provides a unified and modular framework to support the simulation and performance characterization of heterogeneous detector deployments in urban environments. This paper presents the key components along the UDM workflow.

Abstract

We discuss the reconstruction of low-energy nuclear reaction kinematics from charged-particle tracks in solenoidal spectrometers working in Active Target Time Projection Chamber mode. In this operation mode, reaction products are tracked within the active gas medium of the Active Target with a three dimensional space point cloud. We have inferred the reaction kinematics from the point cloud using an algorithm based on a linear quadratic estimator (Kalman filter). The performance of this algorithm has been evaluated using experimental data from nuclear reactions measured with the Active Target Time Projection Chamber (AT-TPC) detector.

5. Automatic trajectory recognition in Active Target Time Projection Chambers data by means of hierarchical clustering

Abstract

The automatic reconstruction of three-dimensional particle tracks from Active Target Time Projection Chambers data can be a challenging task, especially in the presence of noise. In this article, we propose a non-parametric algorithm that is based on the idea of clustering point triplets instead of the original points. We define an appropriate distance measure on point triplets and then apply a single-link hierarchical clustering on the triplets. Compared to parametric approaches like RANSAC or the Hough transform, the new algorithm has the advantage of potentially finding trajectories even of shapes that are not known beforehand. This feature is particularly important in low-energy nuclear physics experiments with Active Targets operating inside a magnetic field. The algorithm has been validated using data from experiments performed with the Active Target Time Projection Chamber developed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL).The results demonstrate the capability of the algorithm to identify and isolate particle tracks that describe non-analytical trajectories. For curved tracks, the vertex detection recall was 86\% and the precision 94\%. For straight tracks, the vertex detection recall was 96\% and the precision 98\%. 19 pags., 16 figs., 8 tabs., We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R3B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σΔE/ ΔE of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Abstract

Measurement of root-mean-square radii of proton distributions of 17–22N from charge-changing cross section shows the emergence of thick neutron skin towards the neutron-drip line. Signature of N = 14 shell gap has been found in nitrogen isotopes along with the emergence of neutron halo in 22N. The measured radii are in good agreement with the shell model calculations.

Abstract

The 30P(p,¿)31S reaction plays an important role in understanding the nucleosynthesis of A=30 nuclides in oxygen-neon novae. The Gaseous Detector with Germanium Tagging was used to measure 31Cl ß-delayed proton decay through the key Jp=3/2+, 260-keV resonance. The intensity I260ßp=8.3+1.2-0.9×10-6 represents the weakest ß-delayed, charged-particle emission ever measured below 400 keV, resulting in a proton branching ratio of Gp/G=2.5+0.4-0.3×10-4. By combining this measurement with shell-model calculations for G¿ and past work on other resonances, the total 30P(p,¿)31S rate has been determined with reduced uncertainty. The new rate has been used in hydrodynamic simulations to model the composition of nova ejecta, leading to a concrete prediction of 30Si:28Si excesses in presolar nova grains and the calibration of nuclear thermometers., Postprint (author's final draft)

Abstract

We performed a missing-mass spectroscopy experiment of the 12C(p, d) reaction at 2.5 GeV proton energy in order to search for η′ mesic nuclei. An excitation-energy spectrum of 11C was obtained around the η′ production threshold. As no significant peak structure was observed in the spectrum, upper limits of the formation cross section of η′ mesic nuclei have been determined. Preliminary results of the experiment as well as future prospects are given.

Abstract

Elastic and inelastic alpha scatterings on C10 were measured using a 68-MeV/u radioactive C10 beam incident on the recently developed MAIKo active target system. The phenomenological effective α-N interaction and the point-nucleon density distribution in the ground state were determined from the elastic scattering data. The cross sections of the inelastic alpha scattering were calculated using this interaction and density distribution and were compared with the experiment to determine the neutron quadrupole transition matrix element Mn between the ground state and the 21+ state at Ex=3.35 MeV in C10. The deduced neutron transition matrix element is Mn=6.9±0.7(fit)±1.2(sys)fm2. The ratio of the neutron transition strength to proton transition strength was determined as Mn/Mp=1.05±0.11(fit)±0.17(sys), which indicates that the quadrupole transition between the ground state and the 21+ state in C10 is less neutron dominant compared to that in C16., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

Measurement of root-mean-square radii of proton distributions of 17–22N from charge-changing cross section shows the emergence of thick neutron skin towards the neutron-drip line. Signature of N = 14 shell gap has been found in nitrogen isotopes along with the emergence of neutron halo in 22N. The measured radii are in good agreement with the shell model calculations.
