Chiliadenus montanus(Vahl.) Brullo is a wild herb that grows in narrow parts of Jordan and is locally named Hneedeh. Despite being used for treating mild abdominal and respiratory ailments, Hneedeh is still locally known on a very small scale, and its healing capabilities are still waiting for a solid scientific justification. No previous studies were made to explore the antibacterial potential of Jordanian Hneedeh as well as its chemical composition despite being researched by scientists from neighboring countries. For this reason, this research aimed to unveil the active compounds behind the medicinal properties of wild C. montanus collected from Garissa-Jordan by analyzing the essential oil using the GC MS system. Also, the antibacterial activity was explored in two extracts (methanolic and ethanolic) collected from the succulent branches of C. montanus was examined using Microdilution and Disc Diffusion Assays. Data revealed the presence of 23 compounds grouped into eight classes and oxygenated monoterpenes were the predominant class (40.36%).Terpinen-4-ol, which is known for its super curative antibacterial and antitumoral powers, was indicated to be the major chemical compound in the essential oil of Hneedeh as it comprised (23.3%) of the essential oil, which disagreed with other previous studies made on the same plants growing in neighboring counties. Moreover, both extract types restricted growth in most tested bacterial types. The results recorded in the Microdilution Assay showed that the inhibitory effect of both extract types was stronger thanthose obtained in the antibiotic treatment (control) in E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Meanwhile, both methanolic and ethanolic extracts were as effective as the antibiotic when administrated to Bacillus subtilis and Salmonella sp. at similar minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) values. Moreover, Disc Diffusion Assay showed that both extract types could prevent the development of six bacteria types while no effect was recorded in Klebsiella pneumoniae. However, E coli bacteria was the most affected strain. The presence of the oxygenated monoterpenes, especially Terpinen-4-ol at premium levels, might be the causal agent behind the remarkable antibacterial powers of C. montanus extract. To our knowledge, this is the first time that C. montanus which grows wild in the village of Ghareesa is reported to contain Terpinen-4-ol as the main active ingredient, which is unlike results reported in other studies conducted on similar plant species growing in other countries. Background Attachment is a pattern of interaction and communication established and developed between the mother and the newborn after birth. As it is important for the growth of mentally and physically healthy individuals, it develops during pregnancy and continues after birth. The aim of study was to evaluate the effect of pre-cesarean section (CS) instruction on post-cesarean maternal-newborn attachment behaviors. Design A quasi-experimental (posttest only) design was adopted for the current study. Sample: a purposive sample of 130 post-CS women was recruited and randomly assignment to study and control groups (65 women each). Tools A structured interview questionnaire and postpartum maternal-newborn attachment behavior observational tools were used to collect data. Results There were highly statistically significant differences between study and control groups regarding the mean total attachment score (86.32±23.02 vs. 70.05±26.44 in the study and control group, respectively; P=0.001). Moreover, there were statistically significant differences between both groups regarding the mean scores of emotional, keeping close, caring behaviors, and time of initiation of breastfeeding after CS (P=0.001). Conclusion Providing mothers with the necessary bonding instructions before delivery had a significant effect on post-CS maternal-newborn attachment behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is one of the major causes of disability and death worldwide. Currently, intravenous administration of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA), initiated within 4.5 hours after symptom onset, is the standard therapy for AIS. We aimed to predict the 30-day functional outcome of AIS patients who received alteplase in comparison with non- thrombolyzed patients and to evaluate the predictors of the unfavorable outcome after 30 days. Methods: All the data of 80 AIS patients who received rt-PA during the period from 2019 to 2021 were prospectively collected and analyzed. For comparison, 80 patients who received regular treatment, rather than rt-PA within the first 24 h, were selected to match the alteplase group as regards the baseline data and included in the study as a control group. The functional outcome of the thrombolyzed patients after 30 days was evaluated in comparison with controls by using a modified ranking scale. Results: After a 30-day follow-up period, the mortality rate was slightly higher among the rt-PA group (12.5%) in comparison with the control group (10%), however, this difference was not significant. Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) was significantly higher in the alteplase group than in non- thrombolyzed patients (13.8% vs 3.8%). More patients had a favorable outcome (mRS = 0--2) in the rt-PA group than in the control group (28.7% vs 15%). Age, high baseline blood glucose level, systolic blood pressure, NIHSS score on admission and after 24h, body mass index (BMI) (≥ 30), AF, cardioembolic stroke and occurrence of ICH stroke were significant predictors of functional outcome after IV thrombolysis. Gender, hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus (DM), hyperlipidemia, smoking, Ischemic heart disease, previous stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) and timing of initiation of thrombolytic therapy had a non-significant effect. Conclusion: After 30-day follow-up period, rt-PA had a significant more increase of favorable functional outcome with increased risk of ICH. Older age, baseline hyperglycemia, high SPB, high NIHSS (either on admission or after 24h), obesity, cardioembolic stroke subtype, history of AF and occurrence of ICH were significant predictors of unfavorable functional outcome after thrombolysis. Background: Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally. Most of the anticancer drugs showed poor selectivity. Medicinal plants have proven, historically, their value as a source of molecules with therapeutic potential. Aim and objective: This study aims to optimize the method of extraction, identification, qualitative and quantitative analysis of Capsaicin (CAP) from Jordanian Capsicum annuum (C. annuum), and to investigate the anticancer activity of the crude extract.Methods: The plants extract from C. annuum was obtained by Soxhlet extraction, HPLC were used for qualitative and quantitative analysis, and Cytotoxic potentials was investigated by Cell viability (MTT).Results: Our results showed that Hexan solvent represented a convenient yield of extraction and the highest percentage of CAP yield with better purity of extract in comparison with other solvents, Jordan Valley ‘’Al-Ghor’’ showed the highest percentage of CAP yield in extract. Additionally, C. annuum crude extract showed dose depended cytotoxicity activity against a cancer cell. Conclusion, we have optimized the isolated, qualitative and quantitative analysis of CAP from the fruits of C. annuum growing in Jordan in fast and reproducible method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the current study, the compositions of the essential oil obtained from leaves of Ocimum basilicum 'Cinnamon' grown in Jordan in a greenhouse was analysed. The antitumor activity of the essential oil was examined against three different cancer cell lines including MDA-MB-231, MCF7 and U-87 MG. The hydrodistillation method was used to extract the essential oil from Ocimum basilicum and the chemical components were analyzed and identified using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. The dry weight yield of essential oil was 0.50 % (w/w). Thirty-one components representing 97.80 % of the essential oil were identified. The main chemical components revealed the presence of linalool, eugenol, eucalyptol, hinesol, trans-α-bergamotene and γ-cadinene as the major constituents. In conclusion, the essential oil extracted from greenhouse cultivated Ocimum basilicum European chemotype showed potent antitumor activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
