Aim: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and hyperacute serum (HAS) were compared in a novel human model of ex vivo bone damage induced by oxygen–glucose deprivation (OGD). Materials & methods: Osteoarthritic subchondral bone pieces were harvested from discarded femoral heads during hip replacement surgery and subjected to transient OGD. Results: Proteome profiling revealed that PRP is more angiopoietic, whereas HAS is more antiangiopoietic in composition. However, treatment of OGD-exposed bone with multiple PRP preparations had no effect on cell counts, whereas HAS restored cell proliferation capacity and rescued viable cell number following OGD. Conclusion: A similar pro-proliferation effect was observed with recombinant growth factors, indicating that HAS may be an alternative agent for enhancing the regeneration of damaged bone cells.

Aim: We compared the long-term results of two treatment regimes in avascular femoral head necrosis. Methods: We performed a retrospective clinical observational study on 19 hips that were operated on by core decompression and autologous bone impaction enhanced with platelet-rich plasma (platelet-rich plasma+bone autograft group). As a control, 13 hips were operated on by core decompression only (decompression group). Joint replacement was evaluated as the primary endpoint of the study, functional results were evaluated according to the Harris Hip Score and bone density measurements were performed. The historical mid-term results of conversion total hip arthroplasty (THA) are acceptable; however, the complication rates are high. In total, 39 patients (45 hips) from 2 institutions underwent conversion THA from 1993-2006 and were retrospectively evaluated. The mean age was 48.3 years, the mean follow-up time was 8.7 years, and the mean duration arthrodesis prior to conversion THA was 18.2 years. The outcomes included operative time, blood loss, leg-length discrepancy (LLD), thigh circumference, Harris Hip Score (HHS), complications, and radiographic evaluation. House constructions in Europe are going through important transformations. Light framed constructions, both using steel and wood, are gaining more and more market share. As these construction techniques are new for most European countries there is a generalized need for codes of practice to be available for the design and detailing of such structures. Furthermore, some of the regionsin Europe are also seismically active, and in these regions thereisneed for earthquake design specifications, which are non existent at present. The present paper describes a part of an experimental investigation undertaken to determine the lateral load bearing capacity of wood-framed OSB-sheeted wall-panels utilized in housing applications. In the first phase components of the wood-frame panels were tested and a FE modelling attempt was made to determine the load bearing capacity of entire wall-panels. The preparation phase of the wall experiments is also briefly presented.
