4. Enhancing LSPR sensitivity of Au gratings through graphene coupling to Au film

Abstract

A particular interesting plasmonic system is that of metallic nanostructures interacting with metal films. As the LSPR behavior of gold nanostructures (Au NPs) on the top of a gold thin film is exquisitely sensitive to the spacer distance of the film-Au NPs, we investigate in the present work the influence of a few-layered graphene spacer on the LSPR behavior of the NPs. The idea is to evidence the role of few-layered graphene as one of the thinnest possible spacer. We first show that the coupling to the Au film induces a strong lowering at around 507nm and sharpening of the main LSPR of the Au NPs. Moreover, a blue shift in the main LSP resonance of about 13 nm is observed in the presence of a few-layered graphene spacer when compared to the case where gold nanostructures are directly linked to a gold thin film. Numerical simulations suggest that this LSP mode is dipolar and that the hot spots of the electric field are pushed to the top corners of the NPs, which makes it very sensitive to surrounding medium optical index changes and thus appealing for sensing applications. A figure of merit (FoM) of such a system (gold/graphene/ Au NPs) is 2.8, as compared to 2.1 for gold/Au NPs either a 33% sensitivity gain and opens up new sensing strategies.

Abstract

We present here an original process combining top-down and bottom-up approaches by annealing a thin gold film evaporated onto a hole template made by etching a PS-PMMA copolymer film. Such process allows a better control of the gold nanoparticle size distribution which provides a sharper localized surface plasmon resonance. This makes such route appealing for sensing applications since the figure of merit of the Au nanoparticles obtained after thermal evaporation is more than doubled. Such process could besides allow tuning the localized surface plasmon resonance by using copolymer with various molecular weights and thus be attractive for surface enhanced raman spectroscopy.

Abstract

We study numerically and experimentally the second-harmonic generation (SHG) from rectangular metagratings of V-shaped gold nanoantennas. We show that by carefully engineering the array pitch to steer the diffraction orders toward the single antenna emission, the extracted signal is maximized. This enhancement is attributed to the angular overlap between the radiation pattern and array factor and is comparable to the improvement yielded by the coupling of surface lattice resonances (SLRs) with local modes. Moreover, we demonstrate a simple technique to experimentally reconstruct the emission diagram of an antenna from measurements of the collective grating response as a function of the excitation angle. Excellent agreement is obtained with simulations when the sample is immersed either in air or in water, which is crucial in view of future sensing application. Thanks to the high signal-to-noise ratio and low dependence on the statistical particle dispersity, this method constitutes an effective alternative to back-focal plane imaging when very weak signals such as SHG are involved.

Abstract

Au sortir du territoire héduen, les deux étapes routières de Ludna à Saint- Georges-de-Reneins et d'Asa Paulini à Anse (Rhône) sont nommées par les itinéraires routiers antiques sur la route de Lugdunum, dans un espace relativement restreint compris entre la Saône à l'est, les Monts du Beaujolais à l'ouest et les rivières de l'Ardière et de l'Azergues au nord et au sud. La première de ces étapes a principalement fait l'objet d'une fouille programmée entre 2003 et 2009. L'histoire archéologique de la seconde est plus complexe, puisque, face à l'urbanisation accélérée de la commune d'Anse, les fouilles d'archéologie préventive ont, au cours de la première décennie des années 2000, succédé à un rythme soutenu aux travaux des érudits des xixe et xxe siècles. Réuni à partir de 2008 dans un projet collectif de recherches dirigé par Jean-Claude Béal, le groupe de chercheurs, d'horizons divers, a eu pour objectif d'associer données anciennes réexaminées et données récentes dans une confrontation de ces deux étapes. Derrière l'apparente identité de leur statut, leur nature se révèle très différente. D'un côté, à Ludna, une bourgade s'est développée dès l'époque augustéenne, remarquable par l'ampleur des travaux d'aménagement public et la présence de structures de stockage. De l'autre, à Asa Paulini, on peut douter de l'existence même d'une agglomération avant la fin de l'Antiquité ; en revanche, une topographie favorable et la proximité de la capitale des Gaules explique sans doute que des habitats isolés de natures diverses et pour certains très prestigieux se juxtaposent dès le Haut-Empire, avant la construction d'une enceinte de taille restreinte qui, à un moment du Bas‑Empire, a pu jouer un rôle dans l'hébergement et la circulation des hommes et des marchandises, notamment sans doute en direction de Lyon.
