1. DWA-3D: A Reactive Planner for Robust and Efficient Autonomous UAV Navigation

Abstract

Despite the growing impact of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) across various industries, most of current available solutions lack for a robust autonomous navigation system to deal with the appearance of obstacles safely. This work presents an approach to perform autonomous UAV planning and navigation in scenarios in which a safe and high maneuverability is required, due to the cluttered environment and the narrow rooms to move. The system combines an RRT* global planner with a newly proposed reactive planner, DWA-3D, which is the extension of the well known DWA method for 2D robots. We provide a theoretical-empirical method for adjusting the parameters of the objective function to optimize, easing the classical difficulty for tuning them. An onboard LiDAR provides a 3D point cloud, which is projected on an Octomap in which the planning and navigation decisions are made. There is not a prior map; the system builds and updates the map online, from the current and the past LiDAR information included in the Octomap. Extensive real-world experiments were conducted to validate the system and to obtain a fine tuning of the involved parameters. These experiments allowed us to provide a set of values that ensure safe operation across all the tested scenarios. Just by weighting two parameters, it is possible to prioritize either horizontal path alignment or vertical (height) tracking, resulting in enhancing vertical or lateral avoidance, respectively. Additionally, our DWA-3D proposal is able to navigate successfully even in absence of a global planner or with one that does not consider the drone's size. Finally, the conducted experiments show that computation time with the proposed parameters is not only bounded but also remains stable around 40 ms, regardless of the scenario complexity., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures

We study the dynamic behaviour of (weighted) composition operators on the space of holomorphic functions on a plane domain. Any such operator is hypercyclic if and only if it is topologically mixing, and when the symbol is automorphic, such an operator is supercyclic if and only if it is mixing. When the domain is a punctured plane, a composition operator is supercyclic if and only if it satisfies the Frequent Hypercyclity Criterion, and when the domain is conformally equivalent to a punctured disc, such an operator is hypercyclic if and only if it satisfies the Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion. Abstract

The carried-out experiment aimed to assess the influence of ash derived from the thermochemical conversion of feathers (AGF) as a soil amendment, and Dactylis glomerata L. as a test plant in aided phytostabilization of soil strongly contaminated by Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn. The influence of AHG on the chemical properties of soil (pH as well as total and CaCl2-extracted heavy metals) as well as the plant yield and concentration of heavy metals in the roots and shoots. The applied soil amendment influenced an increase in the pH values of soil (by 0.4 units) and a reduction in CaCl2-extractable forms of Zn (25%), Cu (23%), Cd (20%) and Pb (12%), as well as total forms of Cu (35%), Zn (35%), Pb (20%) and Cd (17%) in the soil. The plant yield of the shoots of Dactylis glomerata L. following the application of AGF was 31% higher when compared to the control series. The roots of the tested plant in the AGF series contained higher values of the analyzed heavy metals in relation to the shoots, which was especially visible in the case of Pb (more than twice as high) and Cd (37%).

Abstract

In the context of online ion range verification in particle therapy, the CLaRyS collaboration is developing Prompt-Gamma (PG) detection systems. The originality in the CLaRyS approach is to use a beam-tagging hodoscope in coincidence with the gamma detectors to provide both temporal and spatial information of the incoming ions. The ion range sensitivity of such PG detection systems could be improved by detecting single ions with a 100 ps ($\sigma$) time resolution, through a quality assurance procedure at low beam intensity at the beginning of the treatment session. This work presents the investigations led to assess the performance of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond detectors to fulfill these requirements. A $^{90}$Sr beta source, 68 MeV protons, 95 MeV/u carbon ions and a synchrotron X-ray pulsed beam were used to measure the time resolution, single ion detection efficiency and proton counting capability of various CVD diamond samples. An offline technique, based on double-sided readout with fast current preamplifiers and used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, is also presented. The different tests highlighted Time-Of-Flight resolutions ranging from 13 ps ($\sigma$) to 250 ps ($\sigma$), depending on the experimental conditions. The single 68 MeV proton detection efficiency of various large area polycrystalline (pCVD) samples was measured to be $>$96% using coincidence measurements with a single-crystal reference detector. Single-crystal CVD (sCVD) diamond proved to be able to count a discrete number of simultaneous protons while it was not achievable with a polycrystalline sample. Considering the results of the present study, two diamond hodoscope demonstrators are under development: one based on sCVD, and one of larger size based on pCVD. Abstract

Given a subset of $X\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{n}$ we can associate with every point $x\in \mathbb{R}^{n}$ a vector space $V$ of maximal dimension with the property that for some ball centered at $x$, the subset $X$ coincides inside the ball with a union of lines parallel with $V$. A point is singular if $V$ has dimension $0$. In an earlier paper we proved that a $(\mathbb{R}, +,< ,\mathbb{Z})$-definable relation $X$ is actually definable in $(\mathbb{R}, +,< ,1)$ if and only if the number of singular points is finite and every rational section of $X$ is $(\mathbb{R}, +,< ,1)$-definable, where a rational section is a set obtained from $X$ by fixing some component to a rational value. Here we show that we can dispense with the hypothesis of $X$ being $(\mathbb{R}, +,< ,\mathbb{Z})$-definable by assuming that the components of the singular points are rational numbers. This provides a topological characterization of first-order definability in the structure $(\mathbb{R}, +,< ,1)$. It also allows us to deliver a self-definable criterion (in Muchnik's terminology) of $(\mathbb{R}, +,< ,1)$- and $(\mathbb{R}, +,< ,\mathbb{Z})$-definability for a wide class of relations, which turns into an effective criterion provided that the corresponding theory is decidable. In particular these results apply to the class of $k-$recognizable relations on reals, and allow us to prove that it is decidable whether a $k-$recognizable relation (of any arity) is $l-$recognizable for every base $l \geq 2$.

Abstract

Antibiotics with significant environmental toxicity, e.g., tetracyclines (TCs), are often used in large quantities worldwide, with 50–80% of the applied dose ending up in the environment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exposure to tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and minocycline hydrochloride (MIN) on L. minor. Our research evaluated the phytotoxicity of the TCs by analyzing plant growth and biomass and evaluating assimilation pigment levels and fluorescence. The research was extended with the ability potential of duckweed as a tool for removing TCs from water/wastewater. The results demonstrated that both TCs influenced Ir, Iy, biomass, and photosynthetic efficiency. The uptake of TC and MIN by duckweed was proportional to the concentration in the growth medium. The TC was absorbed more readily, reaching up to 8.09 mg × g−1 of dry weight (DW) at the highest concentration (19.2 mg × L−1), while MIN reached 6.01 mg × g−1 of DW. As indicated, the consequences of the influence of TC on plants were slightly smaller, in comparison to MIN, while the plants could biosorb this drug, even at the lowest tested concentration. This study has shown that using plants for drug biosorption can be an effective standalone or complementary method for water and wastewater treatment.

Abstract

We show that it is decidable whether or not a relation on the reals definable in the structure $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<, \mathbb{Z} \rangle$ can be defined in the structure $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<, 1 \rangle$. This result is achieved by obtaining a topological characterization of $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<, 1 \rangle$-definable relations in the family of $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<, \mathbb{Z} \rangle$-definable relations and then by following Muchnik's approach of showing that the characterization of the relation $X$ can be expressed in the logic of $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<,1, X \rangle$. The above characterization allows us to prove that there is no intermediate structure between $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<, \mathbb{Z} \rangle$ and $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<, 1 \rangle$. We also show that a $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<, \mathbb{Z} \rangle$-definable relation is $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<, 1 \rangle$-definable if and only if its intersection with every $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<, 1 \rangle$-definable line is $\langle \mathbb{R}, +,<, 1 \rangle$-definable. Abstract

Diamond is a material in use at many nuclear and high energy facilities due to its inherent radiation tolerance and ease of use. We have characterized detectors based on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond before and after proton irradiation. We present preliminary results of the spatial resolution of unirradiated and irradiated CVD diamond strip sensors. In addition, we measured the pulse height versus particle rate of unirradiated and irradiated polycrystalline CVD (pCVD) diamond pad detectors up to a particle flux of $20\,\mathrm{MHz/cm^2}$ and a fluence up to $4 \times 10^{15}\,n/\mathrm{cm^2}$., Comment: Talk presented at the 2019 Meeting of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society (DPF2019), July 29 - August 2, 2019, Northeastern University, Boston, C1907293

Abstract

We study the existence of hypercyclic algebras for convolution operators $\Phi(D)$ on the space of entire functions whose symbol $\Phi$ has unimodular constant term. In particular, we provide new eigenvalue criteria for the existence of densely strongly algebrable sets of hypercyclic vectors.

Abstract

We report on the development of a 10B conversion layer optimized for ultra-cold neutron detection with silicon detectors. The efficiency of this layer is high and roughly uniform over a large ultra-cold neutron velocity range. The designed titanium-boron-nickel multilayer film was deposited on silicon using a microwave plasma-assisted co-sputtering method (first, for test purpose, on silicon wafers, then directly on the surface of a CCD sensor).
