Abstract: The inclusive production cross sections of the charmed mesons D^0, D^+, D_s^+ and D^{*+} have been measured in interactions of 920 GeV protons on C, Ti, and W targets with the HERA-B detector at the HERA storage ring. Differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and Feynman's x variable are given for the central rapidity region and for transverse momenta up to $\pT=3.5$ GeV/$c$. The atomic mass number dependence and the leading to non-leading particle production asymmetries are presented as well., Comment: Submitted to EPJ C

Abstract: The electromagnetic calorimeter of the HERA-B experiment built at the HERA proton accelerator at DESY (Hamburg) is described. The construction characteristics of the detector, of the related front-end, readout, trigger and service electronics are discussed together with the constraints and the motivations which inspired the design philosophy. The detector performance are presented as obtained from the analysis of the data acquired during the HERA-B running period, including calibration procedures and achievements and the electron identification capability exploiting a method, proposed here for the first time, based on the observation of the associated bremsstrahlung γ. Finally, some observed physical signals and a short overview of the main obtained physics results are presented.

Abstract: The inclusive production cross sections of the strange vector mesons K*0, K*0bar, and phi have been measured in interactions of 920 GeV protons with C, Ti, and W targets with the HERA-B detector at the HERA storage ring. Differential cross sections as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum have been measured in the central rapidity region and for transverse momenta up to pT=3.5 GeV/c. The atomic number dependence is parametrised as sigma(pA) = sigma(pN)*A**alpha, where sigma(pN) is the proton-nucleon cross section. Within the phase space accessible, alpha(K*0) = 0.86+/-0.03, alpha(K*0bar) = 0.87+/-0.03, and alpha(phi) = 0.96+/-0.02. The total proton-nucleon cross sections, determined by extrapolating the differential measurements to full phase space, are sigma(pN->K*0) = 5.06+/-0.54 mb, sigma(pN->K*0bar) = 4.02+/-0.45 mb, and sigma(pN->phi) = 1.17+/-0.11 mb. The Cronin effect is observed for the first time for vector mesons containing strange quarks; compared to the measurements of Cronin et al. for K+- mesons, the measured values of alpha for phi mesons coincide with those of K- mesons for all transverse momenta, while the enhancement for K*0 / K*0bar mesons is smaller., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Eur Phys J C

A choice of the solution on the basis of the Cockcroft–Walton voltage multiplier is validated. Schematics developed are discussed. A special section describes the behaviour of the crucial components under irradiation since radiation tolerance becomes one of the most important items in the severe HERA- B radiation environment. Abstract: The scintillator tiles with direct readout by silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been studied. The SiPM is placed inside the dimple machined in the center of the big face of 30×30×3 mm3 tile. The different dimple geometries were studied. The tiles with the optimal dimple design show the uniformity of response comparable to the tiles with fiber readout. The direct-readout approach provides a reasonable way for the construction of supermultichannel calorimeters.

Abstract: The spatial nonuniformities of the response and the absolute light yield in calorimeter modules with interleaved absorber and scintillator layers were investigated on high-energy muon and electron beams. A program for detailed simulation of light collection in scintillator tiles of the calorimeter using the Monte Carlo method was developed to describe the whole set of experimental results. The experimental data are in good agreement with the results of simulation.

Abstract: The mid-rapidity ( d σ p N / d y at y = 0 ) and total ( σ p N ) production cross sections of Jψ mesons are measured in proton–nucleus interactions. Data collected by the HERA-B experiment in interactions of 920 GeV / c protons with carbon, titanium and tungsten targets are used for this analysis. The Jψ mesons are reconstructed by their decay into lepton pairs. The total production cross section obtained is σ p N J / ψ = 663 ± 74 ± 46 nb / nucleon . In addition, our result is compared with previous measurements.

Abstract: A measurement of the polarization of Λ and Λ ¯ baryons produced in pC and pW collisions at s = 41.6 GeV has been performed with the HERA-B spectrometer. The measurements cover the kinematic range of 0.6 GeV / c p ⊥ 1.2 GeV / c in transverse momentum and − 0.15 x F 0.01 in Feynman-x. The polarization results from the two different targets agree within the statistical error. In the combined data set, the largest deviation from zero, + 0.054 ± 0.029 , is measured for x F ≲ − 0.07 . Zero polarization is expected at x F = 0 in the absence of nuclear effects. The polarization results for the Λ agree with a parametrization of previous measurements which were performed at positive x F values, where the Λ polarization is negative. Results of Λ ¯ polarization measurements are consistent with zero.

Abstract: We report on the design, construction and performance of a prototype for a high-granularity tile hadronic calorimeter for a future international linear collider detector. Scintillating tiles are read out via wavelength-shifting fibers that guide the scintillation light to a novel photodetector, the silicon photomultiplier. A prototype has been tested using a positron test beam at DESY. The results are compared with a reference prototype calorimeter equipped with multichannel vacuum photomultipliers. Detector calibration, noise, linearity and stability are discussed, and the energy response in a 1–6 GeV positron beam is compared with simulations. The present results demonstrate that the silicon photomultiplier is well-suited as photodetectors in calorimeters and thus has been selected for the construction of a 1 m 3 calorimeter prototype to operate in hadron beams.

Abstract: We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay D 0 → μ + μ − using 50 × 10 6 events recorded with a dimuon trigger in interactions of 920 GeV protons with nuclei by the HERA-B experiment. We find no evidence for such decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction B ( D 0 → μ + μ − ) 2.0 × 10 − 6 .

Abstract: Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (U) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((U) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

Abstract: Using data collected by the HERA-B experiment, we have measured the fraction of J\psi's produced via radiative chi_c decays in interactions of 920 GeV protons with carbon and titanium targets. We obtained R_{\chi_c} = 0.32 \pm 0.06_{stat} \pm 0.04_{sys} for the fraction of J\psi from chi_c decays averaged over proton-carbon and proton-titanium collisions. This result is in agreement with previous measurements and is compared with theoretical predictions., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figs

Abstract: Using the HERA-B detector, the b-bbar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b-bbar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi, by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi->ll decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both $e^+e^-$ and $\mu^+\mu^-$ channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section $\sigma(b \bar b) = 32 ^{+14}_{-12} (stat) ^{+6}_{-7} (sys) nb/nucleon$., Comment: 22 pages, 10 Postscript figures

Abstract: Measurements of the kinematic distributions of $J/\psi$ mesons produced in $p-$C, $p-$Ti and $p-$W collisions at $\sqrt{s}=41.6 \mathrm{GeV}$ in the Feynman-$x$ region $-0.34 < x_{F} < 0.14$ and for transverse momentum up to $p_T = 5.4 \mathrm{GeV}/c$ are presented. The $x_F$ and $p_T$ dependencies of the nuclear suppression parameter, $\alpha$, are also given. The results are based on $2.4 \cdot 10^{5}$ $J/\psi$ mesons in both the $e^+ e^-$ and $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decay channels. The data have been collected by the HERA-B experiment at the HERA proton ring of the DESY laboratory. The measurement explores the negative region of $x_{F}$ for the first time. The average value of $\alpha$ in the measured $x_{F}$ region is $0.981 \pm 0.015$. The data suggest that the strong nuclear suppression of $J/\psi$ production previously observed at high $x_F$ turns into an enhancement at negative $x_F$., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables

Abstract: A measurement of the ratio R_chic = (chic -> Jpsi + gam)/ Jpsi in pC, pTi and pW interactions at 920 GeV/c (sqrt{s}=41.6 GeV) in the Feynman-x range -0.35 < x_F(Jpsi) < 0.15 is presented. Both mu+mu- and e+e- Jpsi decay channels are observed with an overall statistics of about 15000 chic events, which is by far the largest available sample in pA collisions. The result is R_chic = 0.188+-0.013(st)(+0.024)(-0.022)(sys) averaged over the different materials, when no Jpsi and chic polarisations are considered. The chic_1 to chic_2 production ratio R_12 = R_chic1/R_chic2 is measured to be 1.02+-0.40, leading to a cross section ratio sigma(chic_1)/sigma(chic_2)=0.57+-0.23. The dependence of R_chic on the Feynman-x of the Jpsi, x_F(Jpsi), and its transverse momentum, p_T(Jpsi), is studied, as well as its dependence on the atomic number, A, of the target. For the first time, an extensive study of possible biases on R_chic and R_12 due to the dependence of acceptance on the polarization states of Jpsi and chic is performed. By varying the polarisation parameter, lambda(obs), of all produced Jpsi's by two sigma around the value measured by HERA-B, and considering the maximum variation due to the possible chic_1 and chic_2 polarisations, it is shown that R_chic could change by a factor between 1.02 and 1.21 and R_12 by a factor between 0.89 and 1.16., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: A detailed description of an original method used to measure the luminosity accumulated by the HERA-B experiment for a data sample taken during the 2002-2003 HERA running period is reported. We show that, with this method, a total luminosity measurement can be achieved with a typical precision, including overall systematic uncertainties, at a level of 5% or better. We also report evidence for the detection of delta-rays generated in the target and comment on the possible use of such delta rays to measure luminosity., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Ratios of the Psi' over the J/psi production cross sections in the dilepton channel for C, Ti and W targets have been measured in 920 GeV proton-nucleus interactions with the HERA-B detector at the HERA storage ring. The Psi' and J/psi states were reconstructed in both the mu+mu- and the e+e- decay modes. The measurements covered the kinematic range -0.35 < x_F < 0.1 with transverse momentum p_T < 4.5 GeV/c. The Psi' to J/psi production ratio is almost constant in the covered x_F range and shows a slow increase with p_T. The angular dependence of the ratio has been used to measure the difference of the Psi' and J/psi polarization. All results for the muon and electron decay channels are in good agreement: their ratio, averaged over all events, is R_psi'(mu)/R_psi'(e)=1.00+-0.08+-0.04. This result constitutes a new, direct experimental constraint on the double ratio of branching fractions, (B'(mu)*B(e))/(B(mu)*B'(e)), of Psi' and J/psi in the two channels., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: The mid-rapidity (dsigma_(pN)/dy at y=0) and total sigma_(pN) production cross sections of J/Psi mesons are measured in proton-nucleus interactions. Data collected by the HERA-B experiment in interactions of 920 GeV/c protons with carbon, titanium and tungsten targets are used for this analysis. The J/Psi mesons are reconstructed by their decay into lepton pairs. The total production cross section obtained is sigma_(pN)(J/Psi) = 663 +- 74 +- 46 nb/nucleon. In addition, our result is compared with previous measurements.

Abstract: A new measurement of the b-bbar production cross section in 920 GeV proton-nucleus collisions is presented by the HERA-B collaboration. The b-bbar production is tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi mesons, by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi->ll decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction point. Both e+e- and mu+mu- channels are reconstructed, for a total of 83 +- 12 inclusive b->J/psi X events found. The combined analysis yields a b-bbar to prompt J/psi cross section ratio of {frac{{Deltasigma(bbbar)}}{{Deltasigma_{jpsi}}}} = 0.032pm 0.005 stat pm 0.004 sys measured in the x_f acceptance (-0.35

Abstract: We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay $D^0 to mu^+mu^-$ using $50 times 10^6$ events recorded with a dimuon trigger in interactions of 920 GeV protons with nuclei by the HERA-B experiment. We find no evidence for such decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction $Br(D^0 to mu^+mu^-)

Abstract: We have searched for Theta^+(1540) and Xi^{--}(1862) pentaquark candidates in proton-induced reactions on C, Ti and W targets at mid-rapidity and sqrt{s} = 41.6 GeV. In 2x10^8 inelastic events we find no evidence for narrow (sigma~5 MeV) signals in the Theta^+ -> pK_s and Xi^{--} -> Xi^-pi^- channels; our 95% CL upper limits (UL) for the inclusive production cross section times branching fraction Bx(dsigma/dy)|_{y~0} are 3.7 and 2.5 microb/N. The UL of the yield ratio of [Theta^+ / Lambda(1520)] < 2.7% is significantly lower than model predictions. Our UL of [BxXi^{--} / Xi(1530)^0] < 4% is at variance with the results that have provided first evidence for the Xi^{--} signal.

Abstract: A prototype module for an International Linear Collider (ILC) detector was built, installed, and tested between 2006 and 2009 at CERN and Fermilab as part of the CALICE test beam program, in order to study the possibilities of extending energy sampling behind a hadronic calorimeter and to study the possibilities of providing muon tracking. The "tail catcher/muon tracker" (TCMT) is composed of 320 extruded scintillator strips (dimensions 1000 mm x 50 mm x 5 mm) packaged in 16 one-meter square planes interleaved between steel plates. The scintillator strips were read out with wavelength shifting fibers and silicon photomultipliers. The planes were arranged with alternating horizontal and vertical strip orientations. Data were collected for muons and pions in the energy range 6 GeV to 80 GeV. Utilizing data taken in 2006, this paper describes the design and construction of the TCMT, performance characteristics, and a beam-based evaluation of the ability of the TCMT to improve hadronic energy resolution in a prototype ILC detector. For a typical configuration of an ILC detector with a coil situated outside a calorimeter system with a thickness of 5.5 nuclear interaction lengths, a TCMT would improve relative energy resolution by 6-16 % for pions between 20 and 80 GeV., 23 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables, submitted to JINST

Abstract: The CALICE collaboration is studying the design of high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters for future International Linear Collider detectors. For the hadronic calorimeter, one option is a highly granular sampling calorimeter with steel as absorber and scintillator layers as active material. High granularity is obtained by segmenting the scintillator into small tiles individually read out via silicon photo-multipliers (SiPM). A prototype has been built, consisting of thirty-eight sensitive layers, segmented into about eight thousand channels. In 2007 the prototype was exposed to positrons and hadrons using the CERN SPS beam, covering a wide range of beam energies and incidence angles. The challenge of cell equalization and calibration of such a large number of channels is best validated using electromagnetic processes. The response of the prototype steel-scintillator calorimeter, including linearity and uniformity, to electrons is investigated and described.

Abstract: An analog hadron calorimeter (AHCAL) prototype of 5.3 nuclear interaction lengths thickness has been constructed by members of the CALICE Collaboration. The AHCAL prototype consists of a 38-layer sandwich structure of steel plates and highly-segmented scintillator tiles that are read out by wavelength-shifting fibers coupled to SiPMs. The signal is amplified and shaped with a custom-designed ASIC. A calibration/monitoring system based on LED light was developed to monitor the SiPM gain and to measure the full SiPM response curve in order to correct for non-linearity. Ultimately, the physics goals are the study of hadron shower shapes and testing the concept of particle flow. The technical goal consists of measuring the performance and reliability of 7608 SiPMs. The AHCAL was commissioned in test beams at DESY and CERN. The entire prototype was completed in 2007 and recorded hadron showers, electron showers and muons at different energies and incident angles in test beams at CERN and Fermilab., Comment: 36 pages, 32 figures

Abstract: The research of the light yield from the scintillator tiles with direct readout by silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) has been performed. The tile size is 30 x 30 x 3 mm3 as planned for the AHCAL of the ILD at the ILC. The different tile geometries were studied. The uniformity of light yield has been optimized and one geometry has been selected. The results are compared to the studies on the same topic, performed by another groups.

Abstract: A new measurement of the $b\overline{b}$ production cross section in 920 GeV proton-nucleus collisions is presented by the HERA-B Collaboration. The $b\overline{b}$ production is tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ mesons by exploiting the longitudinal separation of $J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{l}^{+}{l}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction point. Both ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ channels are reconstructed for a total of $83\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}12$ inclusive $b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}X$ events found. The combined analysis yields a $b\overline{b}$ to prompt $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ cross section ratio of $\frac{\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\sigma}(b\overline{b})}{\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{J/\ensuremath{\psi}}}=0.032\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.005}_{\mathrm{stat}}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.004}_{\mathrm{sys}}$ measured in the ${x}_{F}$ acceptance ($\ensuremath{-}0.35l{x}_{F}l0.15$), extrapolated to $\ensuremath{\sigma}(b\overline{b})=14.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{2.2}_{\mathrm{stat}}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{2.4}_{\mathrm{sys}}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{\text{nb/nucleon}}$ in the total phase space.

Abstract: We have searched for ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$(1540) and ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$(1862) pentaquark candidates in proton-inducedreactions on C, Ti, and W targets at midrapidity and $\sqrt{s}=41.6\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$. In $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{8}$ inelastic eventswe find no evidence for narrow ($\ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{\approx}5\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{M}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$) signals in the ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p{K}_{S}^{0}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ channels; our 95% C.L. upper limits (UL) forthe inclusive production cross section times branching fraction $\mathcal{B}\text{ }d\ensuremath{\sigma}/dy{|}_{y\ensuremath{\approx}0}$ are $(4--16)\ensuremath{\mu}b/N$ for a ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$ mass between 1521 and 1555 MeV,and $2.5\ensuremath{\mu}b/N$ for the ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$. The UL of the yield ratio of ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}/\ensuremath{\Lambda}(1520)l(3--12)%$ is significantly lower than model predictions.Our UL of $\mathcal{B}\text{ }{\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}/\ensuremath{\Xi}(1530{)}^{0}l4%$ is at variance with the results that have provided the first evidencefor the ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$.

Abstract: A study of the angular distributions of leptons from decays of J/psi's produced in p-C and p-W collisions at sqrt{s}=41.6 GeV has been performed in the Feynman-x region -0.34 < x_F < 0.14 and for transverse momentum up to 5.4 GeV/c. The data were collected by the HERA-B experiment at the HERA proton ring of the DESY laboratory. The results, based on a clean selection of 2.3 x 10^5 J/psi's reconstructed in both the e^+ e^- and mu^+ mu^- decay channels, indicate that J/psi's are produced with longitudinal polarization. The magnitude of the effect is maximal at low p_T. For p_T >1 GeV/c a significant dependence on the reference frame is found: the polar anisotropy is more pronounced in the Collins-Soper frame and almost vanishes in the helicity frame, where, instead, a significant azimuthal anisotropy arises., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 8 tables

Abstract: The studies presented in this paper provide a first experimental test of the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA) concept using data recorded in high granularity calorimeters. Pairs of overlaid pion showers from CALICE 2007 test beam data are reconstructed by the PandoraPFA program developed to implement PFA for a future lepton collider. Recovery of a neutral hadron's energy in the vicinity of a charged hadron is studied. The impact of the two overlapping hadron showers on energy resolution is investigated. The dependence of the confusion error on the distance between a 10 GeV neutral hadron and a charged pion is derived for pion energies of 10 and 30 GeV which are representative of a 100 GeV jet. The comparison of these test beam data results with Monte Carlo simulation is done for various hadron shower models within the GEANT4 framework. The results for simulated particles and for beam data are in good agreement thereby providing support for previous simulation studies of the power of Particle Flow Calorimetry at a future lepton collider. CALICE 2007 test beam data were used to test the PandoraPFA program. The program capability to recover a neutral hadron energy in the vicinity of a charged hadron was studied. The impact of overlapping of two hadron showers on energy resolution was investigated. The dependence of the confusion error on the distance between a 10 GeV neutral hadron and a charged pion was derived for pion energies of 10 and 30 GeV which are representative of a 100 GeV jet. The comparison of these test beam data results with Monte Carlo simulation was done for LHEP and QGSP BERT physics lists. The probability of correct recovering of neutral hadron energy has been calculated. The dependence of the confusion error on the neutral hadron energy was also studied. The confusion error averaged over 100 GeV jet fragment energies has been estimated for the case of one neutral and one charged hadron.
