Comprehensive assessment of the health status of 142 children born In Research Center of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Perinatology, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, showed that 92% of children not only survived, but were healthy and their neuropsychic development was normal for age. The hormonal and immunity status was virtually normal. The authors come to a conclusion that extracorporeal fertilization and artificial insemination in the treatment of a sterile marriage are Justified and effective. The health status of the children who are born is normal, provided certain indications are adhered to.

The effect of cyclic adenosine-3′,5′-phosphate (cyclic AMP) on cleavage of early embryos of the sea urchinStrongylocentrotusintermedius was studied. A nontoxic concentration of cyclic AMP was found to have a protective action against the embryotoxic effect of serotonin antagonists NK-122 and chlorpromazine, as well as a protective action against the effect of a toxic concentration of prostaglandin F2α; prostaglandin F2α also had a protective action against the effect of a toxic concentration of cyclic AMP.

The action of chlorpromazine, serotonin and prostaglandin F2-alpha on the cellular membrane potential of 2-cell mouse embryos, as well as a protective effect of serotonin and prostaglandin F2-alpha against the inhibition of the membrane potential by chlorpromazine were studied. Chlorporomazine (1.10-5 g/ml) proved to induce a strong decrease of the membrane potential, but serotonin, prostaglandin F2-alpha were ineffective. Serotonin (1.10-4 g/ml) prevented the action of chlorpormazine (2.10-6 g/ml), whereas prostaglandin F2-alpha (4-8.10-6 g/ml) was ineffective in this respect.

The authors presented results of the assessment of morphological parameters and human embryo division rate in preimplantation when various schemes of superovulation stimulation were used in the routine for extracorporeal fertilization. A great number of embryos with favourable morphologic signs were obtained due to the routine. It was demonstrated that over 50% of all the embryos employed in various schemes of superovulation stimulation were at the stage of four and more blastomeres by the moment of their implantation to the uterine cavity 44-48 hrs after the in vitro insemination. A significant increment in the rate of embryo preimplantation development in vitro was revealed during superovulation stimulation with clomifen citrate in combination with an inductor versus the stimulation with the inductor alone. There was no difference in the frequency of conception induced by the transfer of embryos in all the groups exposed to simulation of superovulation.

In spermatozoa of certain patients nucleotide sequences of hepatitis B virus were revealed in an integrated (chromosomal) and free states by means of dot- and blot-hybridization with a cloned HBV-probe. These observations support the conclusion made earlier on the lack of strict hepatotropism for HBV and, in addition, point to a possible involvement of HBV genomes in some molecular pathologies of men.
