1. Results and Limits of Time-Division Multiplexing for the BICEP Array High-Frequency Receivers.

Abstract: Time-division multiplexing is the readout architecture of choice for many ground and space experiments, as it is a very mature technology with proven outstanding low-frequency noise stability, which represents a central challenge in multiplexing. Once fully populated, each of the two BICEP Array high-frequency receivers, observing at 150 GHz and 220/270 GHz, will have 7776 TES detectors tiled on the focal plane. The constraints set by these two receivers required a redesign of the warm readout electronics. The new version of the standard multichannel electronics, developed and built at the University of British Columbia, is presented here for the first time. BICEP Array operates time-division multiplexing readout technology to the limits of its capabilities in terms of multiplexing rate, noise and cross talk, and applies them in rigorously demanding scientific application requiring extreme noise performance and systematic error control. Future experiments like CMB-S4 plan to use TES bolometers with time-division/SQUID-based readout for an even larger number of detectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2. A truncated primordial power spectrum and its impact on B-mode polarization

Abstract: The absence of large-angle correlations in the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), confirmed by three independent satellite missions, creates significant tension with the standard model of cosmology. Previous work has shown, however, that a truncation, kmin, of the primordial power spectrum comprehensively resolves the anomaly and the missing power at ℓ≲5 (the low multipoles). Since this cutoff is consistent with the hypothesized delay of inflation well beyond the Planck time, we are strongly motivated to consider its possible impact on other observational signatures. In this Letter, we analyze and predict its influence on the most revealing probe awaiting measurement by upcoming missions—the B-mode polarization of the CMB, whose accurate determination should greatly impact the inflationary picture. We highlight the quantitative power of this discriminant by specifically considering the LiteBIRD mission, predicting the effect of kmin on both the angular power spectrum and the angular correlation function of the B-mode, for a range of tensor-to-scalar ratios, r. While its impact on the latter appears to be negligible, kmin should have a very pronounced effect on the former. We show that for r=0.036, kmin's impact on CℓBB at low ℓ's should be easily detectable by LiteBIRD, but will be largely hidden by the total uncertainty of the measurement if r≲0.02.

Abstract: The Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization (BICEP)/Keck (BK) collaboration is currently leading the quest for the highest-sensitivity measurements of the polarized cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies on a degree scale with a series of cryogenic telescopes, of which BICEP Array (BA) is the latest Stage-3 upgrade with a total of ∼ 32,000 detectors. The instrument comprises 4 receivers spanning 30–270 GHz, with the low-frequency 30/40 GHz deployed to the South Pole Station in late 2019. The full complement of receivers is forecast to set the most stringent constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r. Building on these advances, the overarching small-aperture telescope concept is already being used as the reference for further Stage-4 experiment design. This paper describes the development of the BICEP Array 150 GHz detector module and its fabrication requirements, with highlights on the high-density time division multiplexing (TDM) design of the cryogenic circuit boards. The low-impedance wiring required between the detectors and the first stage of superconducting quantum interference device amplifiers is crucial to maintaining a stable bias current on the detectors. A novel multi-layer FR4 Printed Circuit Board with superconducting traces, capable of reading out up to 648 detectors, is detailed along with its validation tests. An ultra-high-density TDM detector module concept we developed for a CMB-S4-like experiment that allows up to 1920 detectors to be read out is also presented. TDM has been chosen as the detector readout technology for the Cosmic Microwave Background Stage-4 (CMB-S4) experiment based on its proven low-noise performance, predictable costs, and overall maturity of the architecture. The heritage for TDM is rooted in mm- and sub-mm-wave experiments dating back 20 years and has since evolved to support a multiplexing factor of 64x in Stage-3 experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Post-inflationary non-Gaussianities on the cosmic microwave background

Abstract: The cosmic microwave background (CMB) provides unprecedented details about the history of our universe and helps to establish the standard model in modern cosmology. With the ongoing and future CMB observations, higher precision can be achieved and novel windows will be opened for studying different phenomena. Non-Gaussianity is one of the most exciting effects which fascinate many cosmologists. While numerous alternative inflationary models predict detectable primordial non-Gaussianities generated during inflation, the single-field slow-roll inflation of the standard model is known to produce negligible non-Gaussianities. However, post-inflationary processes guarantee the generation of non-Gaussianities through the nonlinear evolution of our universe after inflation, regardless of the underlying inflationary theory. These non-Gaussianities not only may contaminate the potential primordial non-Gaussian signals, but also may offer independent tests for late-time physics (such as General Relativity). Therefore, it is of great interest to study them quantitatively. In this thesis, we will study the post-inflationary non-Gaussianities in two main aspects. First, we calculate the CMB bispectrum imprinted by the 2nd-order perturbations during recombination. We carry out a numerical calculation including all the dominant effects at recombination and separate them consistently from the late-time effects. We find that the recombination bispectrum is subdominant compared to the ISW-lensing bispectrum. Although the effect will not be detectable for the Planck mission, its signal-to-noise is large enough that they present themselves as systematics. Thus, it has to be taken into account in future experiments. Second, we formulate the lensing, redshift and time-delay effects through the Boltzmann equation. The new formalism allows us to explicitly list out all the approximations implied in the canonical remapping approach. In particular, we quantify the correction of the CMB temperature power spectrum from the lens-lens couplings and confirm that the correction is small.

Abstract: Branches of cosmic inflationary models, such as slow-roll inflation, predict a background of primordial gravitational waves that imprints a unique odd-parity "B-mode" pattern in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at amplitudes that are within experimental reach. The BICEP/Keck (BK) experiment targets this primordial signature, the amplitude of which is parameterized by the tensor-to-scalar ratio r, by observing the polarized microwave sky through the exceptionally clean and stable atmosphere at the South Pole. B-mode measurements require an instrument with exquisite sensitivity, tight control of systematics, and wide frequency coverage to disentangle the primordial signal from the Galactic foregrounds. BICEP Array represents the most recent stage of the BK program and comprises four BICEP3-class receivers observing at 30/40, 95, 150 and 220/270 GHz. The 30/40 GHz receiver will be deployed at the South Pole during the 2019/2020 austral summer. After 3 full years of observations with 30,000+ detectors, BICEP Array will measure primordial gravitational waves to a precision σ (r) between 0.002 and 0.004, depending on foreground complexity and the degree of lensing removal. In this paper, we give an overview of the instrument, highlighting the design features in terms of cryogenics, magnetic shielding, detectors and readout architecture as well as reporting on the integration and tests that are ongoing with the first receiver at 30/40 GHz. Abstract: The BICEP/Keck (BK) experiment aims to detect the imprint of primordial gravitational waves in the cosmic microwave background polarization, which would be direct evidence of the inflation theory. While the tensor-to-scalar ratio has been constrained to be r 0.05 < 0.06 at 95% c.l., further improvements on this upper limit are hindered by polarized galactic foreground emissions and removal of gravitational lensing polarization. The 30/40 GHz receiver of the BICEP Array (BA) will deploy at the end of 2019 and will constrain the synchrotron foreground with unprecedented accuracy within the BK sky patch. We will show the design of the 30/40 GHz detectors and test results summarizing its performance. The low optical and atmospheric loading at these frequencies requires our TES detectors to have low saturation power in order to be photon noise dominated. To realize the low thermal conductivity required from a 250 mK base temperature, we developed new bolometer leg designs. We will present the relevant measured detector parameters: G, T c , R n , P sat , and spectral bands, and noise spectra. We achieved a per bolometer NEP including all noise components of 2.07 × 10 - 17 W / Hz , including an anticipated photon noise level 1.54 × 10 - 17 W / Hz . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: LiteBIRD is a candidate satellite for a strategic large mission of JAXA. With its expected launch in the middle of the 2020s with a H3 rocket, LiteBIRD plans to map the polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation over the full sky with unprecedented precision. The full success of LiteBIRD is to achieve δ r < 0.001 , where δ r is the total error on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r. The required angular coverage corresponds to 2 ≤ ℓ ≤ 200 , where ℓ is the multipole moment. This allows us to test well-motivated cosmic inflation models. Full-sky surveys for 3 years at a Lagrangian point L2 will be carried out for 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz with two telescopes to achieve the total sensitivity of 2.5 μ K arcmin with a typical angular resolution of 0.5 ∘ at 150 GHz. Each telescope is equipped with a half-wave plate system for polarization signal modulation and a focal plane filled with polarization-sensitive TES bolometers. 10. Constraining Inflation Models with the BICEP/Keck B-mode Experiments

Abstract: Modern observational Cosmology is highly developed and the observable Universe on a large scale is currently well described by the standard LCDM model. The model has a small number of free parameters and describes how the Universe evolved from a hot, dense and homogeneous state with primordial perturbations that are Gaussian, adiabatic and close to scale-invariant. The inflation paradigm extends the LCDM model and interprets the initial conditions as natural consequences of a hypothesized exponential expansion. However, generic inflationary models make a prediction that has not yet been observed: the existence of a background of primordial gravitational waves (PGWs), which would leave an imprint of B-mode polarization in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Measuring the degree-scale B-mode polarization therefore emerges as one of the most promising methods to detect or set limits on PGWs. For the past decade, the BICEP/Keck collaboration has been operating a series of telescopes at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station optimized for B-mode observation. These telescopes are compact refracting polarimeters mapping about 2% of the sky under the exceptionally stable and transparent atmosphere of the Geographical South Pole. They observe at a broad range of frequencies to separate the cosmological signals from polarized Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emission which dominate at the two ends of the microwave regime. In this dissertation, we discuss the BICEP/Keck experimental progress in two major areas. We first present the "BK18 analysis" utilizing data collected up to the 2018 observing season, in conjunction with selected WMAP and Planck polarization maps. The analysis particularly exploits new data from (1) the 3-year BICEP3 map, the current deepest CMB polarization measurement at the foreground-minimum 95 GHz; and (2) the Keck 220 GHz map which has a higher signal-to-noise ratio on the dust foreground than the Planck 353 GHz map. The likelihood analysis of the BB auto- and cross-spectra of the maps reduces the experimental uncertainty on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r to sigma(r)=0.009, and the inference of r from our baseline model is tightened to r=0.014+0.010-0.011 and r

Abstract: LiteBIRD Collaboration: et al., LiteBIRD the Lite (Light) satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection, is a space mission for primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) selected LiteBIRD in May 2019 as a strategic large-class (L-class) mission, with an expected launch in the late 2020s using JAXA’s H3 rocket. LiteBIRD is planned to orbit the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2, where it will map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the entire sky for three years, with three telescopes in 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz, to achieve an unprecedented total sensitivity of 2.2 μK-arcmin, with a typical angular resolution of 0.5○ at 100 GHz. The primary scientific objective of LiteBIRD is to search for the signal from cosmic inflation, either making a discovery or ruling out well-motivated inflationary models. The measurements of LiteBIRD will also provide us with insight into the quantum nature of gravity and other new physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. We provide an overview of the LiteBIRD project, including scientific objectives, mission and system requirements, operation concept, spacecraft and payload module design, expected scientific outcomes, potential design extensions and synergies with other projects. 12. Component separation for CMB polarization data using neural networks

Abstract: [EN] The cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation was emitted at very early times, shortly after the Big Bang. It reaches the earth from every direction and, even though it has become weak and has suffered some changes on its way, it gives important information on how the universe was and how it is evolving. The radiation from the CMB is polarized, and different information can be extracted from each polarization mode. In articular, the detection of primordial B-modes would imply the existence of a primordial background of gravitational waves, which is predicted by inflation, and would in turn greatly reinforce this theory. The B- mode of polarization is very weak, and its observations are very contaminated from Galactic diffuse emission. This project has focused on creating a component separation method using neural networks (NNs) to recover the signal of the CMB from multi-frequency observations of the full sky containing thermal dust and synchrotron foregrounds. The NN models have been optimized for observations of the satellite LiteBIRD, due to be launched in 2027 and whose goal is precisely to obtain measurements of the primordial B-modes, training the models with simulations following specifications of that instrument. Promising results have been obtained, with relative errors of the predictions around 11% in the region of the sky with less intense foregrounds, better than with a standard technique such as ILC. This study suggests that a robust component separation method could be obtained with NNs; still, more has to be analyzed regarding the models and the residuals from foregrounds and noise that are produced, as well as the response of the networks to different foregrounds., [ES] La radiación del fondo cósmico de microondas (FCM) fue emitida poco después del Big Bang. Llega a la tierra desde todas las direcciones y, aunque se ha hecho más débil y ha sufrido algunos cambios por el camino, da información muy valiosa sobre como era el universo y como esta evolucionando. La radiación del FCM está polarizada, y distinta información se puede obtener de cada modo. En particular, la detección de los modos B primordiales implicaría la existencia de un fondo primordial de ondas gravitacionales, el cual esta predicho por inflación, y reforzaría fuertemente esta teoría. El modo B de polarización es muy débil, y sus observaciones vienen muy contaminadas por emisión galáctica difusa. Este proyecto se ha centrado en crear un método de separación de componentes usando redes neuronales (RNs) para recuperar la señal del FCM de observaciones a todo el cielo a distintas frecuencias que contienen componentes de emisión de polvo térmico y synchrotron. Las RNs han sido optimizadas para observaciones del satélite LiteBIRD, programado para ser lanzado en 2027 y cuyo objetivo es precisamente la medición de los modos B primordiales, entrenando los modelos con simulaciones siguiendo las especificaciones de ese instrumento. Se han obtenido resultados prometedores, con errores relativos de las predicciones cerca del 11 % en la región del cielo con contaminación menos intensa, mejor que con una técnica estándar como el ILC. Abstract: Polarbear-2A is the first of three receivers in the Simons array, a cosmic microwave background experiment located on the Atacama Plateau in Chile. Polarbear-2A was deployed and achieved the first light in January 2019 by mapping the microwave emission from planet observations. Commissioning work is underway to prepare the receiver for science observations.

Abstract: Event: SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, 2020, Online.-- et al., LiteBIRD, the Lite (Light) satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection, is a space mission for primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. JAXA selected LiteBIRD in May 2019 as a strategic large-class (L-class) mission, with its expected launch in the late 2020s using JAXA’s H3 rocket. LiteBIRD plans to map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the full sky with unprecedented precision. Its main scientific objective is to carry out a definitive search for the signal from cosmic inflation, either making a discovery or ruling out well-motivated inflationary models. The measurements of LiteBIRD will also provide us with an insight into the quantum nature of gravity and other new physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. To this end, LiteBIRD will perform full-sky surveys for three years at the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2 for 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz with three telescopes, to achieve a total sensitivity of 2.16 µK-arcmin with a typical angular resolution of 0.5◦ at 100 GHz. Abstract: LiteBIRD is a next-generation satellite mission to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. On large angular scales the B-mode polarization of the CMB carries the imprint of primordial gravitational waves, and its precise measurement would provide a powerful probe of the epoch of inflation. The goal of LiteBIRD is to achieve a measurement of the characterizing tensor to scalar ratio $$r$$ to an uncertainty of $$\delta r=0.001$$ . In order to achieve this goal we will employ a kilo-pixel superconducting detector array on a cryogenically cooled sub-Kelvin focal plane with an optical system at a temperature of 4 K. We are currently considering two detector array options; transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers and microwave kinetic inductance detectors. In this paper we give an overview of LiteBIRD and describe a TES-based polarimeter designed to achieve the target sensitivity of 2 $$\upmu $$ K arcmin over the frequency range 50-320 GHz. 17. Precision of future experiments measuring primordial tensor fluctuation.

Abstract: Recently the second phase of Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization (BICEP2) claimed a detection of the tensor-to-scalar ratio ( r) of primordial fluctuation at 5ρ confidence level. If it is true, this large and measurable amplitude ( r ∼- 0.2) of B-mode polarization indicates that it is possible to measure the shape of CMB B-mode polarization with future experiments. Given the current understanding of the experimental noise and foreground contamination, we forecast the precision of r and the tensor spectral index n measurements from Planck, Spider and POLARBEAR with n as a free parameter. We quantitatively determine the signal-to-noise of the measurement in r- n parameter space for the three experiments. The forecasted signal-to-noise ratio of the B-mode polarization somewhat depends on n, but strongly depends on the true value of r. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: International audience; Polarbear-2A is the first of three receivers in the Simons array, a cosmic microwave background experiment located on the Atacama Plateau in Chile. Polarbear-2A was deployed and achieved the first light in January 2019 by mapping the microwave emission from planet observations. Commissioning work is underway to prepare the receiver for science observations.

In particular, its anisotropies in temperature, measured for the first time by satellite COBE then more finely by the experiment WMAP and the PLANCK satellite. The predicted existence of anisotropies of polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background is currently been part of the privileged field of experimentation of the study of the CMB. Indeed, the proof of exists modes B of polarization, single signature of the paramount gravitational waves, currently is the object of an intensive experimental research by the means in particular of the instrument BICEP2 which would have detected its signature in 2014 in values of the tensor report on scalar R = 0.2. Project QUBIC makes party of these experiments intended to reveal the modes B of polarization thanks to its instrument based on the technique of the interferometers and the development of bolometers array, asking for a thorough field of investigation including, amongst other things, the solid state physics, the physics of the low temperatures and cosmology. The thesis presented here is within this framework, with for objective making of a bolometers array whose performance and optimization should make it possible to acquire the necessary sensitivity to the observation of the B-mode polarization. The various experimental techniques acquired with the CSNSM of Orsay indeed make it possible to consider the optimization of the key elements of the bolometers array while being pressed in particular on amorphous alloy of NbxSi1-x for making of an optimized thermal sensor, and on an innovative material, titanium-vanadium alloy, for the clarification of an effective superconducting absorber of radiation, whose low specific heat must make it possible to reach a response time of the detector about ten millisecond, value of the response time necessary to an effective reading of the signal of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The manuscript of thesis here present has as an ambition to develop the physical principles necessary to the field of investigation of work to be achieved. Thus, this study proposes to work out the various elements of a bolometer, joining together a thermal sensor optimized as well as an absorber of radiation of low specific heat, making it possible to consider the clarification of a bolometers array optimized within the framework of the project QUBIC whose observation campaign is envisaged during 2015 with the dome C of the south pole.; Depuis sa découverte en 1964, l’étude du Fond Diffus Cosmologique dans le domaine des longueurs d’ondes millimétriques est devenue un enjeu majeur de la recherche expérimentale dans le domaine de la cosmologie. Abstract: We report on the preliminary performance of the Bicep2 mm-wave polarimeter, deployed in 2009 to the South Pole and will observe through 2012. Bicep2 is currently imaging the polarization of the cosmic microwave background at 150 GHz using an array of 512 antenna-coupled superconducting bolometers. It has been designed for high sensitivity and low systematics in order to pursue the primordial B-mode polarization signal. The instrument and its characterization are presented in this thesis, with particular attention to the detectors and readout system. The instrument sensitivity, mapping speed are discussed along with the expected constraint on the scalar-to-tensor ratio that should be made from one year of data.

Abstract: The measurement of the B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background is one of the most important targets in cosmology. Indeed, if detected, it would be the signature of primordial gravitational waves. This goal is also one of the biggest instrumental challenges in term of sensitivity and systematic cleanness. This can be achieved only by intelligent detection architecture, sensitive detectors and efficient components. In this document, we present an original detection architecture based on bolometric interferometry and used for QUBIC instrument. We also study superconducting planar devices to be used in this kind of architecture. Among them, there are filters, orthogonal mode transducers and phase shifters., La mesure du fond diffus cosmologique est depuis les années 1980 au centre des préoccupations majeures de la cosmologie observationnelle. Aujourd'hui, le défis est la détection des modes B de polarisation de ce rayonnement. Ceux-ci constituent une signature des ondes gravitationnelles primordiales. Afin de pouvoir atteindre cet objectif, nous avons besoin d'instruments offrant des performances exceptionnelles autant au niveau des composants que de l'architecture. Cette thèse s'intéresse de près à des composants planaires supra-conducteurs conçus pour être intégrés dans ces instruments : en particulier des filtres, des diplexeurs de polarisation et des modulateurs de phase. Ces composants pourront être utilisés dans l'interférométrie bolométrique, une architecture de détection particulièrement novatrice. L'expérience QUBIC dédié à l'observation des modes B est basé sur une telle architecture.

26. Beam Characterization and Systematics of the Bicep2 and Keck Array Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization Experiments

Abstract: Inflation, which posits an exponential expansion in the early universe, is well motivated since it resolves questions that are left unexplained by standard LCDM cosmology, such as the flatness and homogeneity of the universe. The exponential expansion of universe during inflation explains the structure in the universe by freezing out the quantum fluctuations of space. These quantum fluctuations are also expected to generate a background of gravitational waves which would then imprint a B-mode polarization signal on the Cosmic Microwave Background. The Bicep2 and Keck Array experiments search for B-mode polarization from inflationary gravitational waves in the Cosmic Microwave Background. Bicep2 and the Keck Array use small aperture, cold, on-axis refracting optics optimized to target the degree angular scales at which the inflationary B-mode polarization is expected to peak. In this thesis we describe the optical design of Bicep2 and the Keck Array. The small aperture design allows us to fully characterize the far-field performance of the instrument on site at the South Pole using thermal and amplified sources on the ground. We describe the efforts taken to characterize the main beam shapes of each polarization sensitive bolometer, as well as the differential beam paramters of each co-located orthogonally polarized detector pair. We study the residual temperature to polarization leakage induced by the beam mismatches after the principle modes have been mitigated in the analysis., Physics

Abstract: International audience; The rotational component of the CMB polarization, the so-called B-modes, is one of the major topic for next generation CMB experiments. This signal traces the effect on the CMB due to primordial gravitational waves produced during the inflationary epoch, probing the physics of the very early universe at GUT energy scales. This is a challenge, being the expected amplitude of B-mode polarization ~ 0.1μK. In this paper we describe the BRAIN experiment, a bolometric interferometer which combines high sensitivity bolometric detectors with the excellent control of systematic effects proper of interferometers. Being a ground based experiment, we identified Dome Charlie in Antarctica as the best site for such measurements. In order to validate the goodness of the site, as well as some of the implemented technical solutions, we built a pathfinder experiment which has been successfully operated during last Antarctic summer, and we report about preliminary results obtained.
