1. Performance of transgenic Bt cotton of different Bt events under IPM in rainfed situation

Abstract

The field experiment was carried out at ARS, Dharwad farm, Karnataka, India during 2010-11 to study the performance of Bt cotton hybrids, viz. Bunny BG-I, Bunny BG-II, JK Durga and Nathbaba developed through different Bt events under IPM practices. The performance of the Bt hybrids with IPM practices (module) was compared with farmers practices. IPM module encompassed, Bt cotton seeds treated with imidacloprid 70WS, sowing of redgram as a refuge, detopping of shoot tip, installation of pheromone traps, and selective use of chemicals for sucking pests control, whereas farmers practice relied only on chemical interventions. The results revealed that among the Bt genotypes, Bunny BG-II under IPM, recorded lower population of aphids, thrips, leaf hopper and mirid bugs (3.94,9.09,2.07/3 leaves and 3.10/25 squares respectively) followed by Bunny BG-I(4.44, 9.74, 2.26/3 leaves and 3.12/25 squares respectively). However non-significant variation among the genotypes was observed under IPM. Further, irrespective of the modules, bollworm population was not observed in any of the Bt cotton genotypes. Although the larval population of Helicoverpa was recorded in Non Bt, the population was considerably low with IPM practice (0.98/plant) as compared to the farmers practice (1.96/plant) due to target specific interventions. The fruiting bodies damage was negligible in both the modules with hybrids containing two genes compared to hybrids with single Bt gene. On the contrary, modules with non Bt cotton registered significantly higher fruiting bodies damage. Among the genotypes, Bunny BG-II integrated in IPM registered higher seed cotton yield of 25.20 q/ha followed by 24.57 q/ha in Nathbaba with more profit. It is evident from the results that performance of Bunny BG-II was found to be better as indicated by lower infestation and higher seed cotton yield under IPM practice. more...

Field experiments were conducted during kharif 2010-2011 and 2011-12, in the field of Department of Agricultural Entomology, College of Agriculture, Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth, Parbhani (Maharashtra). During this experiment, significantly highest population (1.70 LB/5 plants) of lady bird beetle,(1.00 chrysopa /5 plants) of chrysopa and (1.60 spiders /5 plants) of spider were observed in untreated control and were at par with MAU IPM module. Abstract

The investigation was carried out during kharif 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 in order to know the effect of different IPM module on insect pests of soybean. Significantly lower population of (2.54 larvae/ mrl) H.armigera, per cent pod damage (4.23%) by H.armigera were observed in MAU module. The minimum larval population of semilooper (3.62 larvae/mrl), S.litura (2.64 larvae/mrl) and per cent leaflet damage (6.71%) due to leaf miner, the minimum per cent defoliation (10.49%) due to defoliators were observed in chemical control followed by MAU module. more...

Cyantraniliprole 10.26% OD @ 600 ml, flonicamid 50% WG @ 150 g, fipronil 5% SC @ 1000 ml and buprofezin 25% SC @ 1000 ml were most effective against aphids than neonicotinoids. Highest population of Coccinella septempunctata after first spray was observed in untreated control (1.92) followed by Bt (1.70), Beauveria bassiana (1.66) whereas during second spray more number of C. septempunctata observed in untreated control (2.01) followed by Azadirachtin 1500 ppm (1.77) and NSKE 5% (1.74). Abstract

Pod borer complex, Helicoverpa armigera, Melanagromyza obtusa and Exelastis atomosa are the serious pests of pigeonpea. Realising their economic importance, investigations were carried out at the Vasantarao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth, Parbhani during kharif 2011 and 2012 to evaluate the efficacy of various IPM modules. The study revealed that all IPM modules were significantly superior over unprotected (M-3). The pod damage caused by M. obtusa was low in IPM module (M-2) as against unprotected module. There were no significant differences in pod damage caused by E. atomosa. The effectiveness of IPM modules was also reflected on the grain yield. Three IPM modules viz. M-1, M-2 and M-3 produced higher yields (9.70, 9.56 and 9.12 q/ha, respectively) as compared to untreated control (6.80 q/ha).
