Introduction Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a prevalent and disabling condition characterized by a wide variety of phenotypic expressions. Several studies have reinforced the hypothesis of OCD heterogeneity by proposing subtypes based on predominant symptomatology (Mataix-Cols et al., 2005), course (Tukel et al., 2007), and comorbidities (Mahasuar et al., 2011). Early-onset OCD could be considered a neurodevelopmental subtype of OCD, with evidence of distinct neurocircuits supporting disease progression (Park et al., 2022). Objectives The aim of the present study is to evaluate the sociodemographic and clinical differences between the early-onset and late-onset subtypes in a large patient cohort. Introduction Medication adherence was defined by the WHO as “the extent to which a person’s behavior coincides with the medical advice given” (WHO, 2003). Existing literature indicates that approximately 49% of patients with major psychiatric disorders do not fully adhere to their prescribed psychopharmacological therapy (Colom et al, 2002). Non-adherence can lead to partial therapeutic responses or treatment resistance, increased risk of relapse, re-hospitalization, elevated suicide risk, and overall poorer functioning, thereby compromising the patient-doctor therapeutic relationship (Garcìa et al, 2016). Objectives The aim of the present study was to assess potential differences in terms of clinical features related to adherence to treatment in a large cohort of psychiatric patients of an Italian psychiatric department. Methods The study included 307 psychiatric patients, of any gender or age, diagnosed with unipolar depression (UD), bipolar depression (BD), anxiety disorders (AD), schizophrenic spectrum disorders (SS) or a primary diagnosis of personality disorders (PD), based on DSM-5 criteria. Patients were consecutively recruited from the Department of Psychiatry at Luigi Sacco University Hospital, in Milan. The patient’s adherence to treatment was evaluated using the Clinician Rating Scale (CRS), with a cut-off of ≥ 5 defining adherence subgroups (A+: score ≥ 5; A-: score < 5). Comparative and predictive analysis were performed for the whole sample and the two adherence subgroups. Results Overall, nearly one-third of the whole sample reported suboptimal medication adherence. Specifically, rates were approximately 35.3% and 32.7% for BD and SS, respectively, followed by 30.8% for PD, 28% for AD and, 20.3% for UD (see Figure 1). Introduction People with mental illness are overrepresented throughout the criminal justice system. In Italy, an ongoing process of deinstitutionalization has been enacted: the Judicial Psychiatric Hospitals are now on the edge of their closure in favor of small-scale therapeutic facilities (Residenze per l’Esecuzione delle Misure di Sicurezza - REMS). Law 81/2014 prescribes that a patient cannot stay in a REMS for a period longer than a prison sentence for the same index offense. Therefore, when patients end their duty for criminal behaviors, their clinical management moves back to outpatient psychiatric centers. Elevated risks of violent behavior are not equally shared across the spectrum of psychiatric disorders. In the past several years, multiple studies in the field of forensic psychiatry confirmed a close relationship between violent offenders and comorbid substance abuse. Objectives In order to broaden the research in this area, we analyzed sociodemographic, clinical and forensic variables of a group of psychiatric patients with a history of criminal behaviors, attending an outpatient psychiatric service in Milan, with a focus on substance abuse. Methods This is a cross-sectional single center study, conducted in 2020. Seventy-six subjects with a history of criminal behaviors aged 18 years or more and attending an outpatient psychiatric service were included. Demographic and clinical variables collected during clinical interviews with patients were retrospectively retrieved from patients’ medical records. Appropriate statistical analyses for categorical and continuous variables were conducted. Results Data were available for 76 patients, 51,3% of them had lifetime substance abuse. Lifetime substance abuse was significantly more common in patients with long-acting injectable antipsychotics therapy, >3 psychiatric hospitalizations, history of previous crimes and economic crime (Table 1). Introduction Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an evidence-based treatment and rTMS protocols have been included in international guidelines for patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). The daily administration of standard rTMS protocols, typically over several weeks, could be a limiting factor (e.g., time off from work, commuting issues). To intensify the antidepressant response and to reduce the number of stimulation days, it has been proposed that increasing the number of rTMS sessions performed per day could be more effective and help to reduce the burden for patients and clinicians. Although there is much interest in accelerated TMS protocols, little is known about their efficacy and tolerability, and the literature on the topic is still scarce. Objectives To compare the efficacy and tolerability of two rTMS protocols (standard vs. accelerated) as augmentative strategies in patients with TRD. Methods In the present ongoing, open-label, trial 14 patients meeting DSM-5 criteria for major depressive episode (either unipolar or bipolar), classified as partial responders or non-responders to adequate pharmacological treatment, were randomized to receive either standard (one session per day, five days a week, for four weeks; n= 7) or accelerated (two sessions per day, five days a week, for two weeks; n=6) rTMS treatment protocols. In both cases, rTMS was performed on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, high frequency (10 Hz) at 120% of the motor threshold, 3000 pulses per sessions. Primary outcome measures included HAM-D, MADRS, and CGI-S scores at baseline (T0), at the end of rTMS treatment (T1), and after 1 month (T2), as well as tolerability based on adverse effects. Paired Samples t-Test for continuous variables was used to compare psychometric scales at each timepoint, while t-Test was used to compare differences between the two groups. Introduction Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Tic Disorder (TD) are two highly disabling, comorbid and difficult-to-treat conditions. DSM-5 acknowledged a new “tic-related” specifier for OCD, i.e., Obsessive-Compulsive Tic-related Disorder (OCTD), which may show poor treatment response. Objectives The aim of the present study was to evaluate rates and clinical correlates of response, remission and resistance to treatment in a large multicentre sample of OCD patients with versus without tics. Methods 398 patients with a DSM-5 diagnosis of OCD with and without comorbid TD was assessed from ten psychiatric departments across Italy. Treatment response profiles in the whole sample were analysed comparing the rates of response, remission and treatment-resistance as well as related clinical features. Multivariate logistic regressions were performed to highlight possible treatment response related factors. Results Later ages of onset of TD and OCD were found in the remission group. Moreover, significantly higher rates of psychiatric comorbidities, TD, and lifetime suicidal ideation and attempts were associated to the treatment-resistant group, with larger degrees of perceived worsened quality of life and family involvement. Conclusions While remission was related to later ages of OCD and TD onset, specific clinical factors, such as early onset and presence of psychiatric comorbidities and concomitant TD, predicted a worse treatment response, with a significant impairment in quality of life for both patients and their caregivers. These findings suggest a worse profile of treatment response for patients with OCTD. Disclosure No significant relationships.

Introduction Several evidence recognizes Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) as a promising biomarker in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders, including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), considering the involvement of epigenetic regulation in BDNF altered expression. Objectives This study aims to investigate, in a sample of OCD patients, the epigenetic modulation in terms of levels of methylation and hydroxymethylation on the BDNF gene exon I promoter. Methods Fifty OCD patients, recruited from Psychiatry Unit 2, Sacco University Hospital in Milan and fifty healthy controls, comparable by age and gender. Saliva samples were collected by oral swab and epigenetic analysis were performed at the University of Teramo. Statistical analyses were performed with t test with Bonferroni correction. Results Data analysis showed a significant decrease in 5-methyl cytosine levels (5mC) (mean OCD: 1.221%; mean CTRL: 1.784%; p < 0.001) and a significant increase in 5-Hydroxy-methyl cytosine levels (5hmC) (mean OCD: 1.018%; mean CTRL: 0.527% p< 0.0001) in BDNF gene exon I promoter of OCD patients compared to controls. Regarding 5mC of site 3 and 5hmC of site 1 and 2 of the exon I promoter CpG islands, no statistical significance was found. Conclusions Present results showed significant differences in epigenetic modulation of BDNF gene, which might not be univocally interpreted. They could represent an intrinsic OCD characteristic or the effect of antidepressant drugs, assumed by all recruited patients. Further studies, comparing OCD subjects in treatment vs drug-free, are necessary to define BDNF epigenetic modulation role and its possible use as biomarker in the characterization of OCD. Introduction During the COVID-19 pandemic, health workers represented a group particularly vulnerable to work-related stress, but prevention and management of psychiatric symptoms are still under evaluation. Neurofeedback is a safe and non-invasive neuromodulation technique with the target of training participants in the self-regulation of neural substrates underlying specific psychiatric disorders. Protocols based on the increase of alpha frequencies, associated with the process of relaxation, are used for the treatment of stress, anxiety and sleep disturbances. Objectives The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of an alpha-increase NF protocol for the treatment of stress in healthcare workers exposed to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Eighteen medical doctors belonging to the Sacco Hospital were recruited during the COVID-19 health emergency and underwent a 10 sessions NF alpha-increase protocol during two consecutive weeks. The level of stress was assessed at the beginning (T0) and at the end (T1) of the protocol through the following questionnaires: Severity of Acute Symptoms Stress (SASS), Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Brief-COPE. Statistical analyses were performed with Paired Samples t-Test for continuous variables, setting significance at p < 0.05. Results A significant increase in alpha waves mean values between T0 and T1 was observed. In addition, a significant reduction in the PSQI test score between T0 and T1 was observed. Conclusions Alpha-increase protocol showed promising results in terms of stress modulation, sleep quality improvement and safety profile in a pilot sample of health-care workers. Larger controlled studies are warranted to confirm present results.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the influence of periodontal status, clinical data, and serum markers on salivary leptin levels in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods: A case–control study was conducted with 38 patients with SLE and 29 healthy controls. Periodontal data included periodontal probing depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and gingival bleeding on probing (BOP). Stimulated saliva samples were collected to analyze salivary leptin levels. Clinical and serum data were collected from the SLE group. Statistical analysis included the t-test, Mann–Whitney test, Spearman correlation coefficient, and a structural equation model. Results: The SLE group had a lower salivary leptin level than the control group (P = 0.002). The model revealed that SLE had an inverse and independent effect on salivary leptin (standardized estimate = − 0.289, P = 0.023). Moreover, salivary leptin level negatively correlated with the serum levels of triglyceride, creatinine, and leukocytes, positively correlated with the serum total cholesterol, but was not significantly correlated with the periodontal status. Conclusion: These findings suggest that patients with SLE have a lower salivary leptin level. In addition, the level of salivary leptin does not appear to be related to periodontal status in patients with SLE.

We examined whether weight loss following HAES®-based interventions associates with changes in cardiometabolic risk factors and quality of life of women with obesity. This was an exploratory, ancillary analysis of a 7-month, mixed-method, randomized controlled trial. Fifty-five women (age: 33.0 ± 7.2; BMI: 30–39.9 kg/m2) were included in this study. OBJECTIVES: To prospectively evaluate demographic, anthropometric and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in pediatric patients with laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) METHODS: This was a longitudinal observational study of surviving pediatric post-COVID-19 patients (n=53) and pediatric subjects without laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 included as controls (n=52) was performed. RESULTS: The median duration between COVID-19 diagnosis (n=53) and follow-up was 4.4 months (0.8-10.7). Twenty-three of 53 (43%) patients reported at least one persistent symptom at the longitudinal follow-up visit and 12/53 (23%) had long COVID-19, with at least one symptom lasting for >12 weeks. The most frequently reported symptoms at the longitudinal follow-up visit were headache (19%), severe recurrent headache (9%), tiredness (9%), dyspnea (8%), and concentration difficulty (4%). At the longitudinal follow-up visit, the frequencies of anemia (11% versus 0%, p=0.030), lymphopenia (42% versus 18%, p=0.020), C-reactive protein level of >30 mg/L (35% versus 0%, p=0.0001), and D-dimer level of >1000 ng/mL (43% versus 6%, p=0.0004) significantly reduced compared with baseline values. Chest X-ray abnormalities (11% versus 2%, p=0.178) and cardiac alterations on echocardiogram (33% versus 22%, p=0.462) were similar at both visits. Comparison of characteristic data between patients with COVID-19 at the longitudinal follow-up visit and controls showed similar age (p=0.962), proportion of male sex (p=0.907), ethnicity (p=0.566), family minimum monthly wage (p=0.664), body mass index (p=0.601), and pediatric pre-existing chronic conditions (p=1.000). The Pediatric Quality of Live Inventory 4.0 scores, median physical score (69 [0-100] versus 81 [34-100], p=0.012), and school score (60 [15-100] versus 70 [15-95], p=0.028) were significantly lower in pediatric patients with COVID-19 at the longitudinal follow-up visit than in controls. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients with COVID-19 showed a longitudinal impact on HRQoL parameters, particularly in physical/school domains, reinforcing the need for a prospective multidisciplinary approach for these patients. These data highlight the importance of closer monitoring of children and adolescents by the clinical team after COVID-19.

Abstract We investigated fat women’s perceptions of their own bodies and their experiences with weight-related discriminations, and how these situations affected their well-being. Thirty-nine obese women were interviewed, and three axes of analysis were identified: (1) repercussions of being fat, (2) living with a fat body, and (3) am I a person or just a fat body? These axes were composed of eight themes which had similar meaning or complemented each other. The results showed our participants had mechanisms to diminish the magnitude of their stigmatized bodies (e.g., attempting to lose weight and changing their current food choices). Participants also reported being fat had physical and psychological consequences for them. Most notably, their larger bodies influenced their self-evaluation, making them feel devalued, unlovable, incapable, and incomplete. They reported stigmatizing experiences in familiar situations, at the workplace and in public spaces, and reported being stigmatized by both close and unknown individuals, including healthcare professionals. These professionals were reported to treat patients disrespectfully, which urges attention to health care inequalities for obese people. Our results stress stigmatizing attitudes towards fat people and their own considerations about themselves have negative consequences in their physical and mental well-being.

Objetivou-se analisar qualitativamente a percepção de mulheres obesas sobre ter um corpo gordo e como elas vivenciaram e foram impactadas por essa condição corporal antes e depois de participarem de uma intervenção não prescritiva, multidisciplinar e baseada na abordagem “Health atEverySize®”. Trata-se de ensaio clínico prospectivo, quasi-experimental, com um ano de duração. Os dados qualitativos foram coletados por meio da condução de três grupos focais e de entrevistas individuais semiestruturadas. Inicialmente, 30 participantes foram recrutadas; 14 concluíram a intervenção. A partir dos dados dos grupos focais e das entrevistas individuais, três eixos interpretativos foram criados: 1) impactos do corpo gordo; 2) opiniões sobre o próprio corpo e a docilidade do corpo gordo; e 3) movimentação do corpo. As participantes relataram que o corpo gordo impactou na construção de aspectos da sua personalidade, diminuindo, por exemplo, possibilidades de vínculos e interações sociais. A partir dos estímulos da intervenção proposta, segundo as percepções das participantes, tais aspectos foram positivamente afetados. Elas também relataram ter sofrido experiências de assédio moral e discriminação por causa de seus corpos. A partir da exposição às estratégias desta intervenção, as participantes relataram se sentir mais empoderadas para lidar com expectativas acerca de seus corpos e mais confortáveis com sua condição corporal atual. Por fim, relataram transitar de experiências negativas associadas à movimentação do corpo para experiências positivas com as mesmas, motivando-as a inserir mais atividades físicas em suas rotinas, além de proporcionar ganhos fisiológicos e psicológicos. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients may show increased insulin resistance (IR) when compared with their healthy peers. Exercise training has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity in other insulin-resistant populations, but it has never been tested in SLE. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy of a moderate-intensity exercise training program on insulin sensitivity and potential underlying mechanisms in SLE patients with mild/inactive disease. A 12-week, randomized controlled trial was conducted. Nineteen SLE patients were randomly assigned into two groups: trained (SLE-TR, n = 9) and non-trained (SLE-NT, n = 10). Before and after 12 weeks of the exercise training program, patients underwent a meal test (MT), from which surrogates of insulin sensitivity and beta-cell function were determined. Muscle biopsies were performed after the MT for the assessment of total and membrane GLUT4 and proteins related to insulin signaling [Akt and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)]. SLE-TR showed, when compared with SLE-NT, significant decreases in fasting insulin [−39 vs. +14%, p = 0.009, effect size (ES) = −1.0] and in the insulin response to MT (−23 vs. +21%, p = 0.007, ES = −1.1), homeostasis model assessment IR (−30 vs. +15%, p = 0.005, ES = −1.1), a tendency toward decreased proinsulin response to MT (−19 vs. +6%, p = 0.07, ES = −0.9) and increased glucagon response to MT (+3 vs. −3%, p = 0.09, ES = 0.6), and significant increases in the Matsuda index (+66 vs. −31%, p = 0.004, ES = 0.9) and fasting glucagon (+4 vs. −8%, p = 0.03, ES = 0.7). No significant differences between SLT-TR and SLT-NT were observed in fasting glucose, glucose response to MT, and insulinogenic index (all p > 0.05). SLE-TR showed a significant increase in AMPK Thr 172 phosphorylation when compared to SLE-NT (+73 vs. −12%, p = 0.014, ES = 1.3), whereas no significant differences between groups were observed in Akt Ser 473 phosphorylation, total and membrane GLUT4 expression, and GLUT4 translocation (all p > 0.05). In conclusion, a 12-week moderate-intensity aerobic exercise training program improved insulin sensitivity in SLE patients with mild/inactive disease. Endothelial cells are thought to play a central role in the pathogenesis of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) supplementation has been shown to improve endothelial function in a number of diseases; thus, it could be of high clinical relevance in APS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of n-3 PUFA supplementation on endothelial function (primary outcome) of patients with primary APS (PAPS). A 16-week randomized clinical trial was conducted with 22 adult women with PAPS. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive placebo (PL, n = 11) or n-3 PUFA (ω-3, n = 11) supplementation. Before (pre) and after (post) 16 weeks of the intervention, patients were assessed for endothelial function (peripheral artery tonometry) (primary outcome). Patients were also assessed for systemic markers of endothelial cell activation, inflammatory markers, dietary intake, international normalized ratio (INR), and adverse effects. At post, ω-3 group presented significant increases in endothelial function estimates reactive hyperemia index (RHI) and logarithmic transformation of RHI (LnRHI) when compared with PL (+13 vs. −12%, p = 0.06, ES = 0.9; and +23 vs. −22%, p = 0.02, ES = 1.0). No changes were observed for e-selectin, vascular adhesion molecule-1, and fibrinogen levels (p > 0.05). In addition, ω-3 group showed decreased circulating levels of interleukin-10 (−4 vs. +45%, p = 0.04, ES = −0.9) and tumor necrosis factor (−13 vs. +0.3%, p = 0.04, ES = −0.95) and a tendency toward a lower intercellular adhesion molecule-1 response (+3 vs. +48%, p = 0.1, ES = −0.7) at post when compared with PL. No changes in dietary intake, INR, or self-reported adverse effects were observed. In conclusion, 16 weeks of n-3 PUFA supplementation improved endothelial function in patients with well-controlled PAPS. These results support a role of n-3 PUFA supplementation as an adjuvant therapy in APS. Registered at http://ClinicalTrials.gov as NCT01956188.

Health at Every Size® (HAES®) is a weight-neutral approach focused on promoting healthy behaviors in people with different body sizes. This study examined multiple physiological, attitudinal, nutritional, and behavioral effects of a newly developed, intensive, interdisciplinary HAES®-based intervention in obese women. This was a prospective, seven-month, randomized (2:1), controlled, mixed-method clinical trial. The intervention group (I-HAES®; n = 39) took part in an intensified HAES®-based intervention comprising a physical activity program, nutrition counseling sessions, and philosophical workshops. The control group (CTRL; n = 19) underwent a traditional HAES®-based intervention. Before and after the interventions, participants were assessed for physiological, psychological, and behavioral parameters (quantitative data) and took part in focus groups (qualitative data). Body weight, body mass index, and waist and hip circumferences did not significantly differ within or between groups (P > 0.05). I-HAES® showed increased peak oxygen uptake and improved performance in the timed-stand test (P = 0.004 and P = 0.004, between-group comparisons). No significant within- or between-group differences were observed for objectively measured physical activity levels, even though the majority of the I-HAES® participants indicated that they were engaged in or had plans to include physical activity in their routines. I-HAES® resulted in improvements in eating attitudes and practices. The I-HAES® group showed significantly improved all Body Attitude Questionnaire subscale and all Figure Rating Scale scores (P ≤ 0.05 for all parameters, within-group comparisons), whereas the CTRL group showed slight or no changes. Both groups had significant improvements in health-related quality of life parameters, although the I-HAES® group had superior gains in the "physical health," "psychological health," and "overall perception of quality of life and health" (P = 0.05, 0.03, and 0.02, respectively, between-group comparisons) domains. Finally, most of the quantitative improvements were explained by qualitative data. Our results show that this new intensified HAES®-based intervention improved participants' eating attitudes and practices, perception of body image, physical capacity, and health-related quality of life despite the lack of changes in body weight and physical activity levels, showing that our novel approach was superior to a traditional HAES®-based program.

OBJECTIVES: The Mikania laevigata extract (MLE) (popularly known in Brazil as "guaco") possesses anti-inflammatory properties. In the present study we tested the effects of MLE in a periodontitis experimental model in rats. We also investigated possible mechanisms underlying such effects. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Periodontal disease was induced by a ligature placed around the mandibular first molars of each animal. Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: non-ligated animals treated with vehicle; non-ligated animals treated with MLE (10 mg/kg, daily); ligature-induced animals treated with vehicle and ligature-induced animals treated with MLE (10 mg/kg, daily). Thirty days after the induction of periodontal disease, the animals were euthanized and mandibles and gingival tissues removed for further analysis. RESULTS: Morphometric analysis of alveolar bone loss demonstrated that MLE-treated animals presented a decreased alveolar bone loss and a lower expression of the activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) measured by immunohistochemistry. Moreover, gingival tissues from the MLE-treated group showed decreased neutrophil migration myeloperoxidase (MPO) assay. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that MLE may be useful to control bone resorption during progression of experimental periodontitis in rats.

This study explored the effects of Health at Every Size®-based intervention on obese women by qualitatively evaluating participants’ perception towards the program and quantitatively evaluating changes related to psychological, behavioral and body composition assessments. A prospective one-year quasi-experimental mixed-method trial was conducted. The mixed method design was characterized by a spiral method, and quantitative and qualitative findings were combined during the interpretation phase. The qualitative data involved three focus groups; and quantitative data comprised physiological, psychological and behavioral assessments. Initially, 30 participants were recruited; 14 concluded the intervention. From the focus groups, the following interpretative axes were constructed: the intervention as a period of discoveries; shifting parameters: psychological, physical and behavioral changes; eating changes, and; redefining success. Body weight, body mass index, total body fat mass and body fat percentage were significantly decreased after the intervention (-3.6, -3.2, -13.0, and -11.1%, respectively; p≤0.05, within-time effect). Participants reported being more physically active, and perceiving better their bodies. Eating-wise, participants reported that the hunger and satiety cues and the consumption of more frequent meals facilitated their eating changes. Finally, participants reported that they could identify feelings with eating choices and refrain from the restrained behavior. These qualitative improvements were accompanied by modest but significant improvements in quantitative assessments. Clinicaltrials.gov registration: NCT02102061.

Abstract Background Muscle atrophy and strength loss are common adverse outcomes following bariatric surgery. This randomized, controlled trial investigated the effects of exercise training on bariatric surgery‐induced loss of muscle mass and function. Additionally, we investigated the effects of the intervention on molecular and histological mediators of muscle remodelling. Methods Eighty women with obesity were randomly assigned to a Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass (RYGB: n = 40, age = 42 ± 8 years) or RYGB plus exercise training group (RYGB + ET: n = 40, age = 38 ± 7 years). Clinical and laboratory parameters were assessed at baseline, and 3 (POST3) and 9 months (POST9) after surgery. The 6 month, three‐times‐a‐week, exercise intervention (resistance plus aerobic exercise) was initiated 3 months post‐surgery (for RYGB + ET). A healthy, lean, age‐matched control group was recruited to provide reference values for selected variables. Results Surgery resulted in a similar (P = 0.66) reduction in lower‐limb muscle strength in RYGB and RYGB+ET (−26% vs. −31%), which was rescued to baseline values in RYGB + ET (P = 0.21 vs. baseline) but not in RYGB (P 0.05 vs. baseline) but not RYGB (P > 0.01 vs. baseline).
