Abstract

Abstract The MEG experiment, designed to search for the $${\mu ^+ \rightarrow \hbox {e}^+ \gamma }$$ μ+→e+γ decay, completed data-taking in 2013 reaching a sensitivity level of $${5.3\times 10^{-13}}$$ 5.3×10-13 for the branching ratio. In order to increase the sensitivity reach of the experiment by an order of magnitude to the level of $$6\times 10^{-14}$$ 6×10-14 , a total upgrade, involving substantial changes to the experiment, has been undertaken, known as MEG II. We present both the motivation for the upgrade and a detailed overview of the design of the experiment and of the expected detector performance.

Abstract

Experiments with the CMD-3 detector at the VEPP-2000 electron–positron collider in the range of center of mass collision energies from 0.32 to 2 GeV have been performed since December 2010. The amount of accumulated data corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 60 pb-1. The resultsof a preliminary analysis are presented for the following annihilation channels: e + e - → 3(π+π-), 2(π+π-π0), K + K -π+π-, K + K -, $$p\bar p$$ , and π+π-. Since processes of electron–positron annihilation that involve the production of multihadron states proceed through several intermediate states, their analysis is necessary for the correct description of the emission-angle and invariant-mass distributions of product particles.

Abstract

In 2007, at the Institute of Nuclear Physics (Novosibirsk), the construction of the VEPP-2000 electron-positron collider was completed. The first electron beam was injected into the accelerator structure with turned-off solenoids of the final focus. This mode was used to tune all subsystems of the facility and to train the vacuum chamber using synchrotron radiation at electron currents of up to 150 mA. The VEPP-2000 structure with small beta functions and partially turned-on solenoids was used for the first testing of the “round beams” scheme at an energy of 508 MeV. Beam-beam effects were studied in strong-weak and strong-strong modes. Measurements of the beam sizes in both cases showed a dependence corresponding to model predictions for round colliding beams. Using a modernized SND (spherical neutral detector), the first energy calibration of the VEPP-2000 collider was performed by measuring the excitation curve of the phimeson resonance; the phi-meson mass is known with high accuracy from previous experiments at VEEP-2M. In October 2009, a KMD-3 (cryogenic magnetic detector) was installed at the VEPP-2000 facility, and the physics program with both the SND and LMD-3 particle detectors was started in the energy range of 1–1.9 GeV. This first experimental season was completed in summer 2010 with precision energy calibration by resonant depolarization.

Abstract

A thin superconducting solenoid is designed to provide a magnetic field of 1.5 T in the CMD-3 detector. The solenoid and an LXe calorimeter are placed in the common vacuum vessel of the detector. The solenoid is passively protected by subdivision and inductive coupling methods. The radiation thickness of the coil is 0.085X0, and the achieved E/M ratio is 6.9 kJ/kg. In 2007, the solenoid was tested in a prototype iron yoke, where the operational parameters were achieved. This paper reports the performance of the solenoid in the CMD-3 detector. The solenoid has been operated safely at a 1.35-T magnetic field. There were 19 quenches caused by various factors at magnetic fields in the range of 0.6-1.38 T. After a quench, the solenoid absorbed about 40% of the stored energy and warmed up to 42-55 K. A significant influence of quench-induced eddy currents on the detector design elements was observed. Liquid helium consumption at steady operation was about 3.5 L/h. Possible application of the achieved results to designing thinner solenoids is discussed.

Abstract

A search for the decay μ + → e + γ , performed at PSI and based on data from the initial three months of operation of the MEG experiment, yields an upper limit on the branching ratio of BR ( μ + → e + γ ) ⩽ 2.8 × 10 − 11 (90% C.L.). This corresponds to the measurement of positrons and photons from ∼ 10 14 stopped μ + -decays by means of a superconducting positron spectrometer and a 900 litre liquid xenon photon detector.

Abstract

The ϕ → π+π−γγ and ϕ → π+π−η decays are sought in the experimental data obtained with the CMD-2 detector in the region of the ϕ-meson resonance. Upper limits ℛ(ϕ → ππγγ)< 1.2 × 10−4 and ℛ(ϕ → ππη) < 6.1 × 10−5 (both at a C.L. of 90%) are determined for the branching ratios of these decays.

A new experiment is described to detect a permanent electric dipole moment of the proton with a sensitivity of $10^{-29}e\cdot$cm by using polarized "magic" momentum $0.7$~GeV/c protons in an all-electric storage ring. Systematic errors relevant to the experiment are discussed and techniques to address them are presented. The cross section for the process $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ is measured in the c.m. energy range 1.04-1.38 GeV from 995 000 selected collinear events including 860000 $e^+e^-$ events, 82000 $\mu^+\mu^-$ events, and 33000 $\pi^+\pi^-$ events. Abstract

The MEG experiment at PSI searches for the decay μ→eγ at a level of ≈10^−13 on the branching ratio BR(μ→eγ/μ→tot), well beyond the present experimental limit (BR≤1.2×10^−11) and is sensitive to the predictions of SUSY-GUT theories. To reach this goal the experiment uses one of the most intense continuous surface muon beams available (≈10^8μ/s) and relies on advanced technology (LXe calorimetry, a gradient-field superconducting spectrometer as well as flexible and powerful trigger and acquisition systems). In order to maintain the highest possible energy, time and spatial resolutions for such detector, frequent calibration and monitoring, using a Cockcroft–Walton proton accelerator, are required. The proton beam is brought to the centre of MEG by a special bellows insertion system and travels in a direction opposite to the one of the normal μ-beam. Protons interact with a lithium tetraborate (Li2B4O7) nuclear target and produce one γ (17.6 MeV) from the reaction 3-7 Li(p, γ)8-4 or two coincident γs (11.67 and 4.4 MeV) from the reaction 11-5 B(p, γ)12-6 C*. The 17.6 MeV γ is used for calibrating and monitoring the LXe calorimeter (σEγ/Eγ=3.85±0.15% at 17.6 MeV) while the coincident 11.67 and 4.4 MeV γs are used to measure the relative timing of the calorimeter and the spectrometer timing counters (σ_delta_t=0.450±0.015ns).

Abstract

We present a new result based on an analysis of the data collected by the MEG detector at the Paul Scherrer Institut in 2009 and 2010, in search of the lepton-flavor-violating decay μ→eγ. The likelihood analysis of the combined data sample, which corresponds to a total of 1.8×10^14 muon decays, gives a 90% C.L. upper limit of 2.4×10^-12 on the branching ratio of the μ→eγ decay, constituting the most stringent limit on the existence of this decay to date.

Abstract

A search for the decay μ+→e+γ, performed at PSI and based on data from the initial three months of operation of the MEG experiment, yields an upper limit on the branching ratio of BR(μ+→e+γ)2.8×10^−11 (90% C.L.). This corresponds to the measurement of positrons and photons from ~10^14 stopped μ+ decays by means of a superconducting positron spectrometer and a 900 litre liquid xenon photon detector.

Abstract

The g-2 experiment dipole consists of a single 48 turn, 15.1 meter diameter outer solenoid and a pair of 24 turn inner solenoids, 13.4 meters in diameter. The inner solenoids are hooked in series and are run at a polarity that is opposite that of the outer solenoid, thus creating a dipole field in the space between the inner and outer solenoids. The dipole flux is returned by a C shaped continuous iron yoke. The superconducting solenoid coils are closely coupled to the solenoid mandrels and as such are subject to quench back. This report presents the results of various tests on the g-2 magnet system operating within its iron return yoke. These tests include quench back time constant measurements for the inner and outer solenoids and measurements of the response of the two-phase forced cooled helium cryogenic system to magnet quenches. The overall effectiveness of the g-2 magnet quench protection system was measured.

The cross section of the process e+e- -> pi+pi- has been measured at the CMD-2 detector in the 370-520 MeV center-of-mass (c.m.) energy range. A systematic uncertainty of the measurement is 0.7 %. Abstract

A description is given of a new experiment to measure the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) to between σ = 10−24 e − cm and 10−25 e − cm, which would be 5 to 6 orders of magnitude improvement over the current world average. Muons are stored in a magnetic ring. Precession due to Thomas precession and the magnetic moment are canceled with the proper combination of applied E and B fields. Only precession due to a non‐vanishing EDM remains, resulting in a large amplification of the EDM signal. The method has general applicability to charged particles.

In this paper a new method is presented for particles in storage rings which could reach a statistical sensitivity of 10**(-27) e cm for the deuteron EDM. Abstract

A higher precision measurement of the anomalous g value, a_mu = (g-2)/2, for the positive muon has been made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, based on data collected in the year 2000. The result a_{mu^+} = 11 659 204(7)(5) times 10^{-10} (0.7 ppm) is in good agreement with previous measurements and has an error about one half that of the combined previous data. The present world average experimental value is a_mu(exp) = 11 659 203(8) times 10^{-10} (0.7 ppm)., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. submitted to Physical Review Letters. as accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. Abstract

The Cryogenic Magnetic Detector (CMD‐2) and main it’s parameters are shortly described. The results for the cross sections of e+e− annihilation into hadrons are presented in the c.m. energy range from 0.37 to 1.39 GeV. The total integrated luminosity of about 31 pb−1 has been collected. The new results for the ρ and ω meson parameters were obtained. The pion form factor was determinated with a 0.6% systematic uncertainty. The major decay modes of the φ meson as well as multihadron final states have been studied in a broad energy range.

Abstract

The muon g-2 experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory is described, including its motivation, goal and present status. The latest result based on 1998 data is aμ+=g−2/2=11 659 191(59)×10−10 (5 ppm), where the error is primarily statistical. This value agrees with the present theoretical value. Data obtained thus far and now being analyzed should have a statistical error of about 0.5 ppm.

Abstract

This article discusses tests of CPT and Lorentz invariance with data from the muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. According to an extension of the Standard Model by Kostelecky et al., CPT/Lorentz violating terms in the Lagrangian induce a shift of the anomaly frequency omega_a of muons in a magnetic field. This shift is predicted to be different for positive and negative muons and to oscillate with the Earth's sidereal frequency. Abstract

The new muon (g−2) experiment at BNL aims at a final precision of 0.35 ppm on the muon anomaly. The experiment has completed four runs beginning in 1997 and has sub-ppm data on tape. Analyzed data include a published 13 ppm result from our initial commissioning run and a recently completed 5 ppm result from our 1998 initial muon injection run. We are actively working on the remainder of the data analysis and on systematic studies.

Abstract

A new and improved experiment for measuring the muon magnetic anomaly at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was successfully started and has yielded first results. New major components of the experiment include a superferric storage ring, a superconducting inflector, electrostatic quadrupoles, lead-scintillating fiber electron calorimeters and a high precision NMR magnetic field measurement and control system. The first measurement of the ratio R of the spin precession frequency of the positive muon relative to that of a free proton gives R=(3.707 219±0.000 048)×10−3. It is similar in accuracy and in good agreement with previous CERN measurements for μ+ and μ−. A muon kicker has been installed to boost the number of stored particles in the storage ring magnet and was successfully commissioned recently. The data acquired so far is expected to lower significantly the uncertainty in R. First extensive data-taking will start soon.

Abstract

The general purpose detector CMD-2 at the VEPP-2M electron-positron collider at Novosibirsk has collected about 11 pb−1 of integrated luminosity in the center-of-mass energy range from 0.36 up to 1.38 GeV. Data in the ρ-meson energy range from 0.61 to 0.96 GeV have been analysed and preliminary results on the e+e−→π+π− cross-section in this energy range are presented.

Abstract

The muon (g−2) experiment at Brookhaven has just completed a 3-month run for checkout and initial data-taking. In the first two months beam was taken in a parasitic mode where one out of ten AGS pulses was delivered for commissioning of the beam line, quadrupoles, detectors, and data acquisition system. This was followed by four weeks of dedicated data collection. The main components of the experiment, which include the pion/muon beam line, the superconducting inflector, the superferric storage ring with its pulsed electric quadrupoles and magnetic field measurement system, and the detector system based on lead-scintillating fiber electron calorimeters, have been satisfactorily commissioned. The muon (g−2) precession frequency is clearly seen as a large signal. It is estimaed that over 25×106 decay positrons with energies greater than 1.5 GeV have been detected.

Abstract

An ultra precise 3 GeV/c storage ring with a 14.5 kG super-ferric magnet is under construction at the Brookhaven AGS for the measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment to 0.35 PPM accuracy. This requires a magnetic field which is constant to ≈ 1 PPM and is known sufficiently well that the magnetic field integral averaged over the muon orbits can be calculated to 0.1 PPM. First the magnetic field will be statically shimmed by various techniques. Pole face winding will be used for final small static and dynamic corrections. Very elaborate NMR field monitoring techniques are required. A “movable trolley” located inside the vacuum chamber and the electrostatic focusing quadrupoles will measure the field throughout the muon storage volume. The trolley “siding” is 180˚ from the injection point where no electric quadrupoles are located. Injection can be interrupted so the trolley can circle the ring. Also ≈ 200 NMR probes located outside the vacuum chamber monitor the field during physics running and control the pole face windings. The very large (≈ 15 m diameter) superconducting coils (SC) are designed. Test winding will soon commence. Orders for the magnet steel can now be placed. R and D on various pulsed and SC dc injection methods is ongoing.

Abstract

The pion electromagnetic form factor has been measured at the VEPP-2M collider in the c.m. energy range 360 MeV–1400 MeV with the detectors OLYA and CMD. On the basis of all available data for the pion form factor collected in the timelike region, the following values for ρ-meson parameters were obtained: m ρ = 775.9 ± 1.1 MeV, σ ρ = 150.5 ± 3.0 MeV. The ω-meson branching ratio into π + π − pair, electromagnetic radius of the pion, ππ scattering length in the P-wave and the strong interaction contribution to the muon ( g − 2) value were found to be B ωππ = (2.3 ± 0.4)%, 〈 r π 2 〉 = 0.422 ± 0.013 fm 2 , a 1 1 = 0.033 ± 0.033m π −3 , a H = (68.4 ± 1.1) × 10 −9 .

Abstract

A cylindrical drift chamber is designed for the Cryogenic magnetic detector (CMD-2) at the VEPP-2M electron-positron collider. The chamber has 512 signal wires which are arranged in 80 jet-type cells. A spatial resolution better than 100 μm has been achieved with prototype for tracks of cosmic particles. The second coordinate is determined by the charge division method with an accuracy of 0.5%.

Abstract

The MEG (Mu to Electron Gamma) experiment has been running at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland since 2008 to search for the decay μ +→e+ γ by using one of the most intense continuous μ + beams in the world. This paper presents the MEG components: the positron spectrometer, including a thin target, a superconducting magnet, a set of drift chambers for measuring the muon decay vertex and the positron momentum, a timing counter for measuring the positron time, and a liquid xenon detector for measuring the photon energy, position and time. The trigger system, the read-out electronics and the data acquisition system are also presented in detail.
