This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. Abstract: The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $\omega_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of $a_{\mu}({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis and fitting of the data to measure the precession frequency. It also presents the averaging of the results from the eleven separate determinations of \omega_a, and the systematic uncertainties on the result., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures. Abstract: The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has measured the anomalous precession frequency $a^{}_\mu = (g^{}_\mu-2)/2$ of the muon to a combined precision of 0.46 parts per million with data collected during its first physics run in 2018. This paper documents the measurement of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring. The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $\omega^{}_a$/$\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_\mu$. The reported uncertainty on $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, mapping, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb., Comment: Added one citation and corrected missing normalization in Eqs (35) and (36)

Abstract: This paper presents the beam dynamics systematic corrections and their uncertainties for the Run-1 data set of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment. Two corrections to the measured muon precession frequency $\omega_a^m$ are associated with well-known effects owing to the use of electrostatic quadrupole (ESQ) vertical focusing in the storage ring. An average vertically oriented motional magnetic field is felt by relativistic muons passing transversely through the radial electric field components created by the ESQ system. The correction depends on the stored momentum distribution and the tunes of the ring, which has relatively weak vertical focusing. Vertical betatron motions imply that the muons do not orbit the ring in a plane exactly orthogonal to the vertical magnetic field direction. A correction is necessary to account for an average pitch angle associated with their trajectories. A third small correction is necessary because muons that escape the ring during the storage time are slightly biased in initial spin phase compared to the parent distribution. Finally, because two high-voltage resistors in the ESQ network had longer than designed RC time constants, the vertical and horizontal centroids and envelopes of the stored muon beam drifted slightly, but coherently, during each storage ring fill. This led to the discovery of an important phase-acceptance relationship that requires a correction. The sum of the corrections to $\omega_a^m$ is 0.50 $\pm$ 0.09 ppm; the uncertainty is small compared to the 0.43 ppm statistical precision of $\omega_a^m$., Comment: 35 pages, 29 figures. Abstract: Experiments are proposed to measure (first longitudinal, then, later, using Stern-Gerlach (SG) deflection, transverse) polarization of an electron beam by measuring the excitation induced in a resonant cavity. With ideal resonator construction and positioning there would be no resonator excitation caused directly by the beam charge. But, because the electron charge is so large relative to its magnetic moment, special beam preparation and polarization modulation are required to suppress this background. Signal levels and foreground to background ratios are calculated.

Abstract: Summary A single screw technique is described as a temporary transphyseal bridge for the treatment of fetlock varus angular limb deformity in foals. This has been compared to tension band wiring with regards to rate of correction, cosmetic result and incidence of complications. The single screw was found to be an effective technique resulting in more rapid improvement of deviations in foals aged up to 5 months. Complications were minimal following both techniques and the final cosmetic result was better following single screw surgery.

Abstract: In the muon ( g - 2 ) experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the spin precession frequency ω a is obtained from a standard χ 2 minimization fit applied to the time distribution of decay electrons. The unusually high accuracy ( ∼ 0.5 ppm ) of the experiment puts stringent requirements on the quality of the fit and the level of understanding of the statistical properties of the fitted parameters. We discuss the properties of the fits and their implications on the derived value for ω a , including estimates of the effect of an imperfect fit function, methods of including additional external information to reduce the error, the effects of splitting the data into many smaller subsets of data, applying different weighting methods to the data using energy information, and various tests of data suitability.

Abstract: The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is one of the most precisely measured quantities in experimental particle physics. Its latest measurement at Brookhaven National Laboratory deviates from the Standard Model expectation by approximately 3.5 standard deviations. Abstract: There is a long standing discrepancy between the Standard Model prediction for the muon and the value measured by the Brookhaven E821 Experiment. At present the discrepancy stands at about three standard deviations, with a comparable accuracy between experiment and theory. Two new proposals – at Fermilab and J-PARC – plan to improve the experimental uncertainty by a factor of 4, and it is expected that there will be a significant reduction in the uncertainty of the Standard Model prediction. I will review the status of the planned experiment at Fermilab, E989, which will analyse 21 times more muons than the BNL experiment and discuss how the systematic uncertainty will be reduced by a factor of 3 such that a precision of 0.14 ppm can be achieved.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to examine the effects of learned resourcefulness training (LRT) on health of elders in retirement communities (RCs). In a clinical trial, 46 elders in four randomly selected RCs received resourcefulness training and were compared to 43 elders in four RCs who participated in a focused reflection reminiscence (FRR) group. The two groups were similar at baseline. Repeated measures analysis of variance revealed no changes on anxiety or depression over time; however, both were significantly correlated with functional status (r's = 0.29 and 0.35, p's < 0.01), self-assessed health (r's = -0.18 and -0.26, p's < 0.05), and resourcefulness (r's = -0.24 and -0.21, p's < 0.05). Although main effects for group were not significant, interaction effects of group and time on self-assessed health and functional status were found. These findings suggest that although teaching resourcefulness to groups of elders in RCs may have beneficial effects on improving their perception of health and functioning over time, significant effects on mental health may not be apparent.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The USCOM ultrasonic cardiac output monitor (USCOM Pty Ltd, Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia) is a non-invasive device that determines cardiac output by continuous-wave Doppler ultrasound. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the USCOM device compared with the thermodilution technique in intensive care patients who had just undergone cardiac surgery. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study in the 18-bed intensive care unit of a 600-bed tertiary referral hospital. Twenty-four mechanically ventilated patients were studied immediately following cardiac surgery. We evaluated the USCOM monitor by comparing its output with paired measurements obtained by the standard thermodilution technique using a pulmonary artery catheter. RESULTS: Forty paired measurements were obtained in 22 patients. We were unable to obtain an acceptable signal in the remaining two patients. Comparison of the two techniques showed a bias of 0.18 and limits of agreement of -1.43 to 1.78. The agreement may not be as good between techniques at higher cardiac output values. CONCLUSIONS: The USCOM monitor has a place in intensive care monitoring. It is accurate, rapid, safe, well-tolerated, non-invasive and cost-effective. The learning curve for skill acquisition is very short. However, during the learning phase the USCOM monitor measurements are rather 'operator dependent'. Its suitability for use in high and low cardiac output states requires further validation

Abstract: The current status of the updated results from the CMD-2 detector is presented. The cross sections of e + e − annihilation into hadrons were measured in the c.m. energy range from 0.37 to 1.39 GeV and are based on the total integrated luminosity of about 30 pb −1 . Results of refitting experimental data for the ρ, ω and mesons are reviewed.

Abstract: The cross section of the process e + e − → ωπ 0 → π 0 π 0 γ has been measured in the c.m. energy range 920–1380 MeV with the CMD-2 detector. Its energy dependence is well described by the interference of the ρ (770) and ρ (1450) mesons decaying to ωπ 0 . Upper limits for the cross sections of the direct processes e + e − → π 0 π 0 γ , ηπ 0 γ have been set.

Abstract: The status of the muon g — 2 experiment at the AGS facility of Brookhaven National Laboratory is discussed. Data obtained in 1999 with positive muons has been analyzed and published. The final data set contained 0.95 × 10 9 events and had an accuracy of 1.3 ppm . Approximately four times more data with positive muons and three times more data with negative muons were obtained in 2000 and 2001, respectively. These data were obtained with a more uniform magnetic field and with different storage ring tunes. An accuracy of the order of 0.5 ppm is anticipated.

Abstract: The measurement of the (g−2) value of leptons provides a unique test of theory since it is the only quantity (unlike charge and mass) calculable in the framework of the Standard Model of elementary particles. The muon (g−2) experiment E821 is currently in progress at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Four data taking runs for positive muons and one run for negative muons were successfully accomplished in 1997–2000 and 2001, respectively. Results of the 1997–2000 runs have been published, thus completing our experiment for μ+. Data analysis for the 2001 run for μ− is currently in progress. To provide measurement of $a_\mu = \tfrac{1} {2}(g - 2)_{\mu ^ - }$ at the same level of accuracy as for $a_{\mu ^ + } = \tfrac{1} {2}(g - 2)_{\mu ^ + }$, we need to have one more data taking run.

Abstract: The muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has the goal of determining the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a μ (=( g- 2)/2) , to the very high precision of 0.35 parts per million and thus requires a storage ring magnet with great stability and homogeneity. A super-ferric storage ring has been constructed in which the field is to be known to 0.1 ppm . In addition, a new type of air core superconducting inflector has been developed and constructed, which successfully serves as the injection magnet. The injection magnet cancels the storage ring field, 1.5 T , seen by the entering muon beam very close to the storage ring aperture. At the same time, it gives negligible influence to the knowledge of the uniform main magnetic field in the muon storage region located at just 23 mm away from the beam channel. This was accomplished using a new double cosine theta design for the magnetic field which traps most of the return field, and then surrounding the magnet with a special superconducting sheet which traps the remaining return field. The magnet is operated using a warm-to-cold cryogenic cycle which avoids affecting the precision field of the storage ring. This article describes the design, research development, fabrication process, and final performance of this new type of superconducting magnet.

Abstract: A precise measurement of the anomalous g value, a(mu)(+) = (g - 2)/2, for the positive muon has been made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The result a(mu)(+) = 11 659 202(14)(6) x 10(-10) (1.3 ppm) is in good agreement with previous measurements and has an error one third that of the combined previous data. The current theoretical value from the standard model is a(mu) (SM)= 11 659 159.6(6.7) x 10(-10) (0.57 ppm) and a(mu)(exp)-a(mu)(SM) = 42(16) x 10(-10) in which a(mu)(exp) is the world average experimental value.

Abstract: A Hall probe device has been built to measure the radial component of the magnetic field in the muon (g-2) storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The ultraprecise (g-2) magnet provides a dominantly vertical magnetic field of about 1:45 T. In order to limit the vertical shift of the muon orbit, the average radial field component should be no more than 5 � 10 � 5 of the vertical field. Our measurements with the Hall probe device achieved an accuracy of 1 � 10 � 5 , which is one of the most precise measurements with Hall probes. This provides adequate accuracy for shimming and control of the radial field. # 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: By the end of an excellent data taking in 1999, we collected approximate to1 billion decay positrons with energy greater than 2 GeV and 30 mus after injection. The analysis of the 1999 data set were performed in parallel by various teams in the collaboration and each team provides a different approach to the analysis. The projected errors are expected to be of order 1.3 ppm statistical and below 0.5 ppm systematic. The data obtained in the 2000 run contains,approximate to4 times more decay positrons compared to 1999.

Abstract: The CPLEAR set-up (modified) has been used to determine the KL–KS mass difference by a method where neutral-kaon strangeness oscillations are monitored through kaon strong interactions, rather than semileptonic decays, thus requiring no assumptions on CPT invariance for the decay amplitudes. The result, Δm=(0.5343±0.0063stat±0.0025syst)×1010ℏ/s, provides a valuable input for CPT tests.

Abstract: Using the 1.9 pb −1 of data collected with the CMD-2 detector at VEPP-2M the decay mode φ→ηγ, η→π+π−π0 has been studied. The obtained branching ratio is B(φ→ηγ)=(1.18±0.03±0.06)%.

Abstract: The muon (g-2) experiment at Brookhaven completed a first run in June and July 1997. The main components of the experiment, which include the superconducting inflector, the superferric storage ring, the electrostatic quadrupoles and the lead-scintillating fiber electron calorimeters, have been commissioned satisfactorily. Our first measurement of the ratio R of the spin precession frequency of the positive muon relative to that of a free proton, R=(3.707219/spl plusmn/0.000048)/spl times/10/sup -3/, is in good agreement with the previous CERN measurements for /spl mu//sup +/ and /spl mu//sup -/, and has approximately the same uncertainty as each of these measurements. In spring 1998 a muon kicker was installed and successfully tested in the storage ring magnet and a significant improvement in the knowledge of the muon g-factor is expected from upcoming runs in August 1998 and January 1999.

Abstract: The muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven has successfully completed two exploratory runs using pion injection and direct muon injection for checkout and initial data taking. The main components of the experiment, which include the pion beam line, the superconducting storage ring and inflector magnets, the muon kicker and the lead-scintillating fiber calorimeters have been satisfactorily commissioned. First results on the anomalous magnetic moment of the positive muon from pion injection are in good agreement with previous experimental results for a(mu+) and a(mu-) from CERN and of comparable accuracy (13 ppm). Analysis of the 1998 muon injection run is in progress and expected to improve the precision to about 4 ppm. A first production run is scheduled for January 1999 with the goal of reaching the 1 ppm error level.

Abstract: A study of the φ → π + π − π 0 decay mode has been performed using a data sample of about 2.0 million φ decays collected by the CMD-2 detector at VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk. The following parameters of the φ -meson have been measured: Br ( φ → π + π − π 0 )=0.145±0.009±0.003 and δ φ − ω =162±17°. The analysis of the Dalitz plot showed the dominance of the φ → ρπ intermediate mechanism, the limits for the ratio of the direct amplitude of φ →3 π to that of φ → ρπ are −0.16 a 1 φ → π + π − η and direct φ → ργγ have been found for the first time: Br ( φ → π + π − η ) −4 and Br ( φ → ργγ ) −4 at 90% C.L.

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment measured the eigentime-dependent asymmetry in the rates of initially tagged K 0 and K 0 decaying to π 0 π 0 π 0 in order to study the interference between the CP-violating K S and the CP-conserving K L decay amplitudes. Without assuming CPT invariance, we obtain for the CP-violation parameter η 000 the values Re( η 000 )=0.18±0.14 stat. ±0.06 syst. and Im( η 000 )=0.15±0.20 stat. ±0.03 syst. . Requiring Re( η 000 ) to be equal to Re(ϵ) we obtain Im( η 000 )=−0.05±0.12 stat. ±0.05 syst. . The corresponding upper limit for the branching ratio of the K S →π 0 π 0 π 0 decay is deduced to be B K S →π 0 π 0 π 0 −5 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: The CP-violation parameter \etazero\ is determined through the eigentime-dependent asymmetry in the rates of initially tagged \kzerob\ and \kzero\ decaying to \pizero \pizero. From the analysis of the complete data set we obtain the values $ \absetazero = [2.47 \pm 0.31_{\mbox{stat.}} \pm 0.24_{\mbox{syst.}}] \times 10^{-3} $ and $ \phizero = 42.0^0 \pm 5.6_{\mbox{stat.}}^0 \pm 1.9_{\mbox{syst.}}^0 % \pm 0.3_{\mbox{$\Delta$m}}^0 . $

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment at CERN measures the time dependent decay rate asymmetries of initially pure K0 and K 0 states to study CP,T and CPT symmetries in the neutral kaon system. The latest results on η+−, Δm and x are reported, as well as direct tests of T violation and CPT violation in K0- K 0 oscillations. Our results are consistent with CPT invariance and allow for an improved limit on the K0- K 0 mass difference. Further, a possible loss of quantum coherence of the neutral kaon system has been tested to a level near the Planck scale.

Abstract: A measurement of the branching ratio for K s → e + e − decay was performed with the CPLEAR detector at LEAR. Full event reconstruction together with calorimeter e/π separation allowed for powerful background rejection and high signal acceptance. Analysis of data taken up to 1994 yields the result: Br(K s → e + e − ) −7 (90 % CL).

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment at CERN uses time-dependent decay-rate asymmetries between K 0 and K 0 to measure η +− . The analysis and the systematic errors are discussed. The preliminary results from all our data are φ +− = 43.5 0 ± 0.5 0 stat ± 0.5 syst ± 0.4 Δm and | η +−| = (2.316 ± 0.025 stat ± 0.028 syst ± 0.009 τ S ) × 10 −3 . The dominant part in the systematic error of φ +− is due to the regeneration correction. A dedicated experiment was performed to reduce this error considerably.

Abstract: The g-2 experiment dipole consists of a single 48 turn, 15.1 meter diameter outer solenoid and a pair of 24 turn inner solenoids, 13.4 meters in diameter. The inner solenoids are hooked in series and are run at a polarity that is opposite that of the outer solenoid, thus creating a dipole field in the space between the inner and outer solenoids. The dipole flux is returned by a C shaped continuous iron yoke. The superconducting solenoid coils are closely coupled to the solenoid mandrels and as such are subject to quench back. This report presents the results of various tests on the g-2 magnet system operating within its iron return yoke. These tests include quench back time constant measurements for the inner and outer solenoids and measurements of the response of the two-phase forced cooled helium cryogenic system to magnet quenches. The overall effectiveness of the g-2 magnet quench protection system was measured.

Abstract: We present a detailed report of the method, setup, analysis and results of a precision measurement of the positive muon lifetime. The experiment was conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute using a time-structured, nearly 100%-polarized, surface muon beam and a segmented, fast-timing, plastic scintillator array. The measurement employed two target arrangements; a magnetized ferromagnetic target with a ~4 kG internal magnetic field and a crystal quartz target in a 130 G external magnetic field. Approximately 1.6 x 10^{12} positrons were accumulated and together the data yield a muon lifetime of tau_{mu}(MuLan) = 2196980.3(2.2) ps (1.0 ppm), thirty times more precise than previous generations of lifetime experiments. The lifetime measurement yields the most accurate value of the Fermi constant G_F (MuLan) = 1.1663787(6) x 10^{-5} GeV^{-2} (0.5 ppm). Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment at CERN studies theCP, T andCPT symmetries in the neutral-kaon system by measuring the rate asymmetries between the decays of initially pure K0 and $$\overline {K^0 } $$ states. Using data taken between 1990 and mid 1994, precise measurements of |η+-|,φ +- and Δm are reported. The comparison of φ+- the superweak phase gives one of the most sensitive tests ofCPT invariance and leads to a new limit on the $$K^0 - \overline {K^0 } $$ mass difference.

Abstract: Antiproton annihilation at rest in gaseous hydrogen (16 bar pressure) to the final states ρ(770)X andf2(1270)X, whereX stands for one or more neutral mesons, has been studied at LEAR using the CPLEAR detector. Relative branching ratios are given forX =π0,2π0, 3π0 ω in the ρ case, and forX =π0, η in thef2 case. The annihilation channel$\bar pp \to \rho 3\pi ^0 $ has not been measured before. The fraction of P-wave annihilation is deduced from the ratiof2π0/ρπ0 to be 0.38±0.07, in good agreement with the result previously obtained by CPLEAR from the ratioK+K-/π+π-.

Abstract: Cholinergic systems in the midbrain of the eel were identified by using histochemical procedures for the demonstration of the enzymes choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and acetylcholinesterase. Neurons detected by both methods are located in the stratum periventriculare of the tectum, cranial motor nuclei III and IV, nucleus isthmi, nucleus gustatorius secundarius, nucleus reticularis superior, and nucleus lateralis valvulae. Some projections of these cell groups were studied by injecting horseradish peroxidase into selected brain regions. Cholinergic neurons make up about 10% of the neurons in the stratum periventriculare of the tectum and are a subset of the type-XIV neurons. Neurons in n. isthmi project primarily to the ipsilateral tectum; some cholinergic isthmal neurons project to n. pretectalis superficialis. A few ChAT-positive axons, perhaps belonging to the tectopetal system, were observed in the optic nerve. The cholinergic neurons of n. gustatorius secundarious project to the inferior lobes of the hypothalamus. The neurons of the superior reticular nucleus are a cholinergic subset of the superior reticular formation. Their axons project rostrally, probably to the thalamus and pretectum. The findings are discussed in relation to functional features of the mesencephalon, particularly in relation to locomotory control.

Abstract: The branching ratio for the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ weak radiative decay $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}n\ensuremath{\gamma}$ has been measured. Three statistically independent results from the same experiment (Brookhaven E811) are reported here. They are combined with a previously published measurement, also from Brookhaven E811, to yield a result of $\frac{(\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}n\ensuremath{\gamma})}{(\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{anything})}=(1.75\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, based on 1800 events after background subtraction. This represents a factor of 75 increase in statistics over the previous world total. A comparison with recent theoretical papers shows that no existing model provides a completely satisfactory description of all data on weak radiative decays. A search is also reported for the radiative capture process ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Sigma}(1385)\ensuremath{\gamma}$ at rest. No signal was observed and an upper limit on the branching ratio of $\frac{[{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Sigma}(1385)\ensuremath{\gamma}]}{[{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{anything}]}l4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ (90% C.L.) was determined.

43. Measurement of the Positive Muon Lifetime and Determination of the Fermi Constant to Part-per-Million Precision

Abstract: We report a measurement of the positive muon lifetime to a precision of 1.0 parts per million (ppm); it is the most precise particle lifetime ever measured. The experiment used a time-structured, low-energy muon beam and a segmented plastic scintillator array to record more than 2 x 10^{12} decays. Two different stopping target configurations were employed in independent data-taking periods. The combined results give tau_{mu^+}(MuLan) = 2196980.3(2.2) ps, more than 15 times as precise as any previous experiment. The muon lifetime gives the most precise value for the Fermi constant: G_F(MuLan) = 1.1663788 (7) x 10^-5 GeV^-2 (0.6 ppm). It is also used to extract the mu^-p singlet capture rate, which determines the proton's weak induced pseudoscalar coupling g_P., Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract: The branching ratio for the \ensuremath{\Lambda} weak radiative decay has been measured to be B(\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}n+\ensuremath{\gamma})/(\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}anything) =[1.78\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.24(stat)${\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}_{0.16}^{0.14}$(syst)]\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}3}$. A low-energy kaon beam was used to produce the \ensuremath{\Lambda} hyperons via the reaction ${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$+p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}+${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$ at rest. Photons from the signal channel and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$ decay were detected with a NaI(Tl) array. The final spectrum contains 287 events after background subtraction, an order of magnitude more events than from the only previous measurement.

45. The Influence of Cerebellar Lesions on the Swimming Performance of the Trout

Abstract: The influence of partial cerebellar ablation on the performance of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, swimming in a water tunnel was studied. Before surgery, all fish maintained a steady position in the water tunnel at all speeds tested. A linear relationship was found between the specific velocity (body lengths−1) and the tail-beat frequency. After partial cerebellectomy, the fish swam well in the tunnel at low speeds, retaining the relationship between tail-beat frequency and specific velocity, but they were unable to maintain a steady position at water speeds requiring tail-beat frequencies above 3.5 s−1 and were swept backwards. Two sham-operated fish swam at all water speeds tested. Post mortem histological investigation showed that the lesions were restricted to the cerebellar corpus. We conclude that the cerebellum plays no role in the generation of motor programmes but may be essential for their selection and implementation.

Abstract: Three independent searches for an electric dipole moment (EDM) of the positive and negative muons have been performed, using spin precession data from the muon g-2 storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Details on the experimental apparatus and the three analyses are presented. Since the individual results on the positive and negative muon, as well as the combined result, d=-0.1(0.9)E-19 e-cm, are all consistent with zero, we set a new muon EDM limit, |d| < 1.9E-19 e-cm (95% C.L.). 47. The New (g-2) Experiment: A proposal to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment to +-0.14 ppm precision

Abstract: We propose to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a{sub {mu}}, to 0.14 ppm-a fourfold improvement over the 0.54 ppm precision obtained in the BNL experiment E821. The muon anomaly is a fundamental quantity and its precise determination will have lasting value. The current measurement was statistics limited, suggesting that greater precision can be obtained in a higher-rate, next-generation experiment. We outline a plan to use the unique FNAL complex of proton accelerators and rings to produce high-intensity bunches of muons, which will be directed into the relocated BNL muon storage ring. The physics goal of our experiment is a precision on the muon anomaly of 16 x 10{sup -11}, which will require 21 times the statistics of the BNL measurement, as well a factor of 3 reduction in the overall systematic error. Our goal is well matched to anticipated advances in the worldwide effort to determine the standard model (SM) value of the anomaly. The present comparison, {Delta}a{sub {mu}} (Expt: -SM) = (295 {+-} 81) x 10{sup -11}, is already suggestive of possible new physics contributions to the muon anomaly. Assuming that the current theory error of 51 x 10{sup -11} is reduced to 30 x 10{sup -11} onmore » the time scale of the completion of our experiment, a future {Delta}a{sub {mu}} comparison would have a combined uncertainty of {approx} 34 x 10{sup -11}, which will be a sensitive and complementary benchmark for proposed standard model extensions. The experimental data will also be used to improve the muon EDM limit by up to a factor of 100 and make a higher-precision test of Lorentz and CPT violation. We describe in this Proposal why the FNAL complex provides a uniquely ideal facility for a next-generation (g-2) experiment. The experiment is compatible with the fixed-target neutrino program; indeed, it requires only the unused Booster batch cycles and can acquire the desired statistics in less than two years of running. The proton beam preparations are largely aligned with the new Mu2e experimental requirements. The (g-2) experiment itself is based on the solid foundation of E821 at BNL, with modest improvements related to systematic error control. We outline the motivation, conceptual plans, and details of the tasks, anticipated budget, and timeline in this proposal.« less

Abstract: Total cross sections, angular, and mass distributions for the reaction {pi}{sup {minus}}{ital p}{r arrow}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{ital n} have been measured for {ital p}{sub {pi}}{sup {minus}}(lab)=7--140 MeV/{ital c} above threshold. The threshold amplitude was used to determine a value for the chiral-symmetry-breaking parameter, {xi}, of {minus}0.98{plus minus}0.52. The {pi}{pi} scattering lengths {ital a}{sub {ital I}} for isospin {ital I}=0 and 2 are derived from this result, together with a current-algebra sum rule. The results are {ital a}{sub 0}=(0.207{plus minus}0.028){ital m}{sub {pi}}{sup {minus}1} and {ital a}{sub 2}=({minus}0.022{plus minus}0.011){ital m}{sub {pi}}{sup {minus}1}. These values are consistent with chiral symmetry broken by the Weinberg {pi}{pi} interaction and the effects of the {ital f}{sub 0}(975) scalar meson.

Abstract: The practice of depositing units of autologous blood to prepare for elective surgery is steadily increasing. This article outlines the advantages and limitations of autologous blood donations. Secondary analysis from a study of functional recovery following total knee replacement compares functional outcomes of people who predeposited autologous units with those who did not. Clinical implications and suggestions are made for managing the patient's physiologic status during the donation process, as well as hemodynamic status during the postoperative transfusion period.

50. Effects of Vagal Sensory Input on the Breathing Rhythm of the Carp

Abstract: Electrical stimulation of an epibranchial vagal ganglion, which innervates the gill region, had a marked influence on the respiratory rhythm of the carp Cyprinus carpio. Vagal input could initiate ventilation in fish displaying intermittent respiration. In fish breathing steadily, vagal stimuli could reset the respiratory rhythm by modifying the existing breathing cycle. An increase of stimulus intensity evoked a cough-like movement, thus delaying the onset of following cycles. Rhythmic stimulation, at intervals not more than 10 % longer or shorter than the breathing cycle period, could entrain the respiratory rhythm in a one-to-one ratio. Larger differences between the stimulation interval and the period of the breathing cycle resulted in either a cyclic modification of the respiratory cycle period or entrainment patterns with coupling ratios of 2:1 or 2:3. Coughing decreased in frequency or even stopped during rhythmic vagal stimulation.
