1. Effectiveness of interventions designed to mitigate the negative health outcomes of informal caregiving to older adults: an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Abstract: Objectives This umbrella review aimed to evaluate whether certain interventions can mitigate the negative health consequences of caregiving, which interventions are more effective than others depending on the circumstances, and how these interventions are experienced by caregivers themselves.Design An umbrella review of systematic reviews was conducted.Data sources Quantitative (with or without meta-analyses), qualitative and mixed-methods systematic reviews were included.Eligibility criteria Reviews were considered eligible if they met the following criteria: included primary studies targeting informal (ie, unpaid) caregivers of older people or persons presenting with ageing-related diseases; focused on support interventions and assessed their effectiveness (quantitative reviews) or their implementation and/or lived experience of the target population (qualitative reviews); included physical or mental health-related outcomes of informal caregivers.Data extraction and synthesis A total of 47 reviews were included, covering 619 distinct primary studies. Each potentially eligible review underwent critical appraisal and citation overlap assessment. Data were extracted independently by two reviewers and cross-checked. Quantitative review results were synthesised narratively and presented in tabular format, while qualitative findings were compiled using the mega-aggregation framework synthesis method.Results The evidence regarding the effectiveness of interventions on physical and mental health outcomes was inconclusive. Quantitative reviews were highly discordant, whereas qualitative reviews only reported practical, emotional and relational benefits. Multicomponent and person-centred interventions seemed to yield highest effectiveness and acceptability. Heterogeneity among caregivers, care receivers and care contexts was often overlooked. Important issues related to the low quality of evidence and futile overproduction of similar reviews were identified.Conclusions Lack of robust evidence calls for better intervention research and evaluation practices. It may be warranted to avoid one-size-fits-all approaches to intervention design. While providing informal care may be a positive experience, it can also exert a considerable strain on caregivers’ physical and mental health. How to best support the needs of informal caregivers remains largely debated. This umbrella review (review of systematic reviews) aims to evaluate (1) whether effective interventions can mitigate the negative health outcomes of informal caregiving, (2) whether certain types of interventions are more effective than others, (3) whether effectiveness of interventions depends on caregiver/receiver, context or implementation characteristics and (4) how these interventions are perceived in terms of acceptability, feasibility and added value.Methods and analysis We will include systematic reviews of primary studies focusing on the effectiveness of interventions (public or private, unifaceted or multifaceted, delivered by health or social care professionals or volunteers) aimed at reducing the impact of caregiving on caregivers’ physical or mental health. This will also include quantitative and qualitative syntheses of implementation studies. The literature search will include the following databases: Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Web of Science. A key informant-guided search of grey literature will be performed. Quality appraisal will be conducted with the AMSTAR-2 checklist for quantitative reviews and with an ad hoc checklist for qualitative syntheses. Narrative and tabular summaries of extracted data will be produced, and framework synthesis will be employed for weaving together evidence from quantitative studies in effectiveness reviews with findings on implementation from qualitative studies.Ethics and dissemination This umbrella review will use data from secondary sources and will not involve interactions with study participants; it is thus exempt from ethical approval. 3. Changes in Job Quality as People Work Beyond Pensionable Age in Sweden

Abstract: Large numbers of people remain in paid work after pensionable age, often in bridge jobs or with reduced working hours. Remarkably, knowledge about the quality of these jobs relative to those taken prior to pension eligibility is very limited. In this paper, we examined changes in job quality among workers in their sixties in the context of contemporaneous changes in work intensity and employment characteristics. This study is based on data from the biennial Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health (SLOSH, 2006–2018, n = 1890–3013). Job quality outcomes were physical (dangerous, strenuous or unpleasant work) and psychosocial (job strain, effort-reward imbalance, work time control) working conditions and job satisfaction. First difference estimation was used to observe within-individual wave-to-wave changes in job quality over ages 61/62–69/70. Changes in working hours, employment characteristics (shifting to a non-permanent contract, the private sector and self-employment) and health were included as covariates. The typical individual who worked beyond pensionable age experienced statistically significant improvements in job quality. Improvements in psychosocial working conditions and job satisfaction were larger for those who reduced working hours and shifted from permanent to non-permanent contracts, from the public into the private sector and from wage-and-salary to self-employment. Work beyond pensionable age is a distinctive period, characterized by employment that becomes more flexible and rewarding and less stressful. These improvements are a function of older individuals’ preferences and ability to work fewer hours and transition to new lines of work.

4. Does Bridge Employment Mitigate or Exacerbate Inequalities Later in Life?

Abstract: Most older Americans with career employment change jobs at least once before retiring from the labor market. Much is known about the prevalence and determinants of these bridge jobs, yet relatively little is known about the implications of such job changes—compared to direct exits from a career job—upon economic disparities in later life. In this article, we use 26 years of longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study to document the various pathways that older Americans take when exiting the labor force, and examine how bridge employment affects nonhousing wealth and total wealth, including the present discounted value of Social Security benefits. We find that gradual retirement in the form of bridge employment neither exacerbates nor mitigates wealth inequalities among Americans who hold career jobs later in life. That said, we do find some evidence that wealth inequalities grow among the subset of older career workers who transition from career employment to bridge employment at older ages. One policy implication of our article is that it provides evidence that might allay concerns about the potential for disparate financial impacts associated with the gradual retirement process.

Abstract: This paper examines job satisfaction and psychosocial and physical job quality over the late career in three contrasting national settings: Sweden, Japan and the United States. The data come from an ex-post harmonized dataset of individuals aged 50 to 75 years constructed from the biennial Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health (SLOSH, 2006–2018, n=13936 to 15520), Japanese Study of Ageing and Retirement (JSTAR, 2006–2013, n=3704) and the United States Health and Retirement Study (HRS, 2006–2016, n=6239 and 8002). The job quality outcomes were physical labour, psychosocial working conditions (time pressure, discretion, pay satisfaction, job security) and job satisfaction. Random effects modelling was performed with age modelled with spline functions in which two knots were placed at ages indicating eligibility for pensions claiming or mandatory retirement. Interestingly, in each country, post-pensionable-age jobs were generally less stressful, freer, and more satisfying than jobs held by younger workers.

Abstract: Policy responses to population ageing have focused on lengthening working lives, overlooking inequalities in older adults’ participation in unpaid activities. This paper examines participation in paid and unpaid activities between the ages of 55 and 70 to answer two questions: how do people navigate pathways of paid work, informal care, volunteering, civic participation and housework in mid to later life?; and how do these pathways relate to gender, socio-economic and health inequalities? Two-staged latent class analysis was used to identify activity pathways using data from the British Household Panel Survey (1996–2008). Multinomial logistic models assessed associations between latent pathways and socio-demographic and health characteristics. Three pathways were observed: full-time work to low activity (49%), part-time and in-home work (34%) and multiple activities (16%). Aside from retirement from full-time work, the pathways of participation in paid and unpaid activities were characterised by continuity; substitution between different forms of paid and unpaid work was not observed. Participation in multiple paid and unpaid activities was more common for respondents in better health and of higher socio-economic status. Since the promotion of paid work and volunteering in later life may mainly benefit individuals in advantaged circumstances, policies should avoid taking a blanket approach to encouraging participation in multiple activities, a key component of active ageing.

Abstract: Providing unpaid informal care to someone who is ill or disabled is a common experience in later life. While a supportive and potentially rewarding role, informal care can become a time and emotionally demanding activity, which may hinder older adults’ quality of life. In a context of rising demand for informal carers, we investigated how caregiving states and transitions are linked to overall levels and changes in quality of life, and how the relationship varies according to care intensity and burden. We used fixed effects and change analyses to examine six-wave panel data (2008–2018) from the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health (SLOSH, n = 5076; ages 50–74). The CASP-19 scale is used to assess both positive and negative aspects of older adults’ quality of life. Caregiving was related with lower levels of quality of life in a graded manner, with those providing more weekly hours and reporting greater burden experiencing larger declines. Two-year transitions corresponding to starting, ceasing and continuing care provision were associated with lower levels of quality of life, compared to continuously not caregiving. Starting and ceasing caregiving were associated with negative and positive changes in quality of life score, respectively, suggesting that cessation of care leads to improvements despite persistent lower overall levels of quality of life. Measures to reduce care burden or time spent providing informal care are likely to improve the quality of life of older people.

Abstract: We report on the first detection of very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula by a Cherenkov telescope in dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) configuration. The result has been achieved by means of the 4 m size ASTRI-Horn telescope, operated on Mt. Etna (Italy) and developed in the context of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory preparatory phase. The dual-mirror SC design is aplanatic and characterized by a small plate scale, allowing us to implement large field of view cameras with small-size pixel sensors and a high compactness. The curved focal plane of the ASTRI camera is covered by silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs), managed by an unconventional front-end electronics based on a customized peak-sensing detector mode. The system includes internal and external calibration systems, hardware and software for control and acquisition, and the complete data archiving and processing chain. The observations of the Crab Nebula were carried out in December 2018, during the telescope verification phase, for a total observation time (after data selection) of 24.4 h, equally divided into on- and off-axis source exposure. The camera system was still under commissioning and its functionality was not yet completely exploited. Furthermore, due to recent eruptions of the Etna Volcano, the mirror reflection efficiency was reduced. Nevertheless, the observations led to the detection of the source with a statistical significance of 5.4 sigma above an energy threshold of ~3 TeV. This result provides an important step towards the use of dual-mirror systems in Cherenkov gamma-ray astronomy. Abstract: The aim of this article is to present a single photon counting technique applied to the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes as an alternative to the charge integration technique used by most experiments in the field. A comparison of the two techniques has been performed, assuming suitable and realistic telescope layouts but different methods to treat and convert the electrical signals at the output of the light sensors. A set of γ-ray induced showers, with primary energies ranging from 300 GeV to 10 TeV, has been simulated for this comparison. The study has been performed both for a single telescope and for a three-telescope array. The results show, in both cases, considerably higher trigger efficiencies in the single photon counting method, with respect to the analog one, particularly at the lowest energies. Single telescope energy thresholds for the two methods are also reported and discussed.

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. Abstract: Since their discovery, almost one century ago, cosmic rays provide a powerful tool to investigate phenomena covering both astrophysical and fundamental physics issues. The detection of cosmic rays from low to extreme energies is potentially linked to some of the most intriguing and still unsolved questions of physics and cosmology. Among them, are the nature of the dark matter, the apparent disappearance of the antimatter, the existence of a new exotic form of matter, e.g., strangelets. At the highest energies, the sources and the mechanisms by which cosmic rays are generated and/or accelerated are still a puzzling issue for today’s astrophysicists. In order to answer these questions several experiments are planned during the next decade, from space, stratosphere or ground, to perform a multifrequency exploration of the cosmic ray spectrum.

Abstract: JEM-EUSO is a space science mission to explore the extreme energies and physics of the Universe. Its instrument will watch the darkside of the earth and will detect UV photons emitted from the extensive air shower caused by an ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR above 1018 eV), or an extremely high energy cosmic ray (EHECR) particle (e.g. above about 1020 eV). Such a high-rigidity particle as the latter arrives almost in a straight line from its origin through the magnetic fields of our Milky Way Galaxy and is expected to allow us to trace the source location by its arrival direction. This can open the door to new astronomy with charged particles. In its 5 years of operation including the tilted mode, Extreme Universe Space Observatory an Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) will detect at least 1000 events with E > 7 × 1019 eV with the Greisen–Zatsepin–Ku’zmin (GZK) suppression spectrum. It can determine the energy spectrum and source locations of GZK to super-GZK regions with a statistical accuracy of several percent. JEM-EUSO is planned to be deployed by H2 transfer vehicle (HTV) and will be attached to the Japanese Experiment Module/Exposure Facility (JEM/EF) of International Space Station. JAXA has selected JEM-EUSO as one of the mission candidates of the second phase utilization of JEM/EF for launch in the early-to-mid 2010 s.

Abstract: This study examined hippocampal volume as a putative biomarker for psychotic illness in the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes (B-SNIP) psychosis sample, contrasting manual tracing and semiautomated (FreeSurfer) region-of-interest outcomes. The study sample (n = 596) included probands with schizophrenia (SZ, n = 71), schizoaffective disorder (SAD, n = 70), and psychotic bipolar I disorder (BDP, n = 86); their first-degree relatives (SZ-Rel, n = 74; SAD-Rel, n = 62; BDP-Rel, n = 88); and healthy controls (HC, n = 145). Hippocampal volumes were derived from 3Tesla T1-weighted MPRAGE images using manual tracing/3DSlicer3.6.3 and semiautomated parcellation/FreeSurfer5.1,64bit. Volumetric outcomes from both methodologies were contrasted in HC and probands and relatives across the 3 diagnoses, using mixed-effect regression models (SAS9.3 Proc MIXED); Pearson correlations between manual tracing and FreeSurfer outcomes were computed. SZ (P = .0007-.02) and SAD (P = .003-.14) had lower hippocampal volumes compared with HC, whereas BDP showed normal volumes bilaterally (P = .18-.55). All relative groups had hippocampal volumes not different from controls (P = .12-.97) and higher than those observed in probands (P = .003-.09), except for FreeSurfer measures in bipolar probands vs relatives (P = .64-.99). Outcomes from manual tracing and FreeSurfer showed direct, moderate to strong, correlations (r = .51-.73, P < .05). These findings from a large psychosis sample support decreased hippocampal volume as a putative biomarker for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, but not for psychotic bipolar I disorder, and may reflect a cumulative effect of divergent primary disease processes and/or lifetime medication use. Manual tracing and semiautomated parcellation regional volumetric approaches may provide useful outcomes for defining measurable biomarkers underlying severe mental illness.

18. SFN-scope: an innovative field analysis system for SFN DVB-T signals

Abstract: With the transition to digital TV and the adoption of Single Frequency Networks (SFN), the quality control of the terrestrial broadcast signal becomes much more complex, because a given geographical area is served by several transmitters simultaneously. If the SFN has national extension, this difficulty is exacerbated by the fact that the density of transmitters can be very high in certain areas. The paper describes an innovative system for the identification of signals received from a set of transmitters in a DVB-T SFN. The SFN-Scope is based on the use of specific Cell-id values in the TPS carriers for each transmitter. The resulting signal is still SFN compliant for all cells but the TPS cells. By solving the linear system of the N channel frequency responses associated with N transmitters, the SFN-Scope extracts the identities of all the transmitters constituting the received signal. Furthermore, with a Compressive Sensing technique, it is possible to disaggregate the overall impulse response into N individual impulse responses, to easily identify individual transmitters.

20. The Milagro anticenter hot spots: cosmic rays from the Geminga supernova?

Abstract: The Milagro experiment has announced the discovery of an excess flux of TeV cosmic rays from the general direction of the heliotail, also close to the Galactic anticenter. We investigate the hypothesis that the excess cosmic rays were produced in the SN explosion that gave birth to the Geminga pulsar. The assumptions underlying our proposed scenario are that the Geminga supernova occurred about 3.4 10^5 years ago (as indicated by the spin down timescale), that a burst of cosmic rays was injected with total energy 10^49 erg (i.e., about 1% of a typical SN output), and that the Geminga pulsar was born with a positive radial velocity of 100--200 km s^-1. We find that our hypothesis is consistent with the available information. In a first variant (likely oversimplified), the cosmic rays have diffused according to the Bohm prescription (i.e., with a diffusion coefficient on the order of c times r_L, with c the speed of light and r_L the Larmor radius). An alternative scheme assumes that diffusion only occurred initially, and the final propagation to the Sun was a free streaming in a diverging magnetic field. If the observed cosmic ray excess does indeed arise from the Geminga SN explosion, the long--sought "smoking gun" connecting cosmic rays with supernovae would finally be at hand. Abstract: Synaptic glutamate signaling in brain is highly complex and includes multiple interacting receptors, modulating cotransmitters and distinct regional dynamics. Medial temporal lobe (MTL) memory structures receive excitatory inputs from neocortical sensory and associational projections: afferents from neocortex pass to parahippocampal cortex, then to layers II/III of entorhinal cortex, and then onto hippocampal subfields. Principles of Hebbian plasticity govern synaptic encoding of memory signals, and homeostatic plasticity processes influence the activity of the memory system as a whole. Hippocampal imaging studies in schizophrenia have identified 2 alterations in MTL--increases in baseline blood perfusion and decreases in task-related activation. These observations along with converging postsynaptic hippocampal protein changes suggest that homeostatic plasticity mechanisms might be altered in schizophrenia hippocampus. If hippocampal pattern separation is diminished due to partial dentate gyrus failure (resulting in 'spurious associations') and also if pattern completion is accelerated and increasingly inaccurate due to increased CA3 associational activity, then it is conceivable that associations could be false and, especially if driven by anxiety or stress, could generate psychotic content, with the mistaken associations being laid down in memory, despite their psychotic content, especially delusions and thought disorder.

Abstract: Models which describe oscillatory metastability for several types of flip-flops are proposed. A constant-slew-rate model is first used to find the bounds on circuit parameters which discriminate between analog and oscillatory metastability. A variable-slew-rate model is then used to evaluate resolving time as a function of input timing. Two classes of flip-flops, homogeneous and inhomogeneous, are defined, and their performances in terms of resolving time are compared. It is shown that, in many cases, inhomogeneous flip-flops provide significant improvements with respect to resolving time when oscillatory metastability is involved. The analytical results are verified by comparison with SPICE simulation results. >

Abstract: The longitudinal development and other characteristics of the EECR induced atmospheric showers can be studied from space by detecting the fluorescence light induced in the atmospheric nitrogen. According to the Airwatch concept a single fast detector can be used for measuring both intensity and time development of the streak of fluorescence light produced by the atmospheric shower induced by an EECR. In questa nota si descrivono la problematica scientifica connessa con i raggi cosmici di altissima energia, le problematiche tecniche legate all'osservazione dallo spazio degli sciami atmosferici estesi e si descrivono le linee di una possibile partecipazione dell'INFN al programma AirWatch ed al progetto EUSO in particolare.

Abstract: We are developing a new telescope, named FIGARO-IV, for γ-ray astronomy above 100 MeV, in which the electron-positron pairs, produced by photons in lead converters, are tracked in several independent planes of Limited Streamer Tubes (LST). Because of its large sensitive area and good angular resolution, this telescope is well suitable, and competitive with respect to satellite-based detectors as EGRET, to localise discrete γ-ray sources in a relatively short observation time, to detect high-energy γ-ray bursts and to investigate both periodic and random time variability on -ray sources.

Abstract: We present serological evidence that Dirofilaria immitis was the causative agent of subcutaneous nodules in two patients. ELISA and enzyme-linked immunoblot analysis showed that the two human sera had a reactivity pattern similar to that of D. immitis rabbit immune serum. The reaction pattern of the human sera was very different to that of Dirofilaria repens rabbit immune serum. In the light of our findings, the traditional view that subcutaneous filarial nodules are due to D. repens has to be revised.

Abstract: Two hundred ninety-five injury descriptions from 135 consecutive patients treated at a level-I trauma center were coded by three human coders (H1, H2, H3) and by TRI-CODE (T), a PC-based artificial intelligence software program. Two study coders are nationally recognized experts who teach AIS coding for its developers (the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine); the third has 5 years experience in ICD and AIS coding. A "correct coding" (CC) was established for the study injury descriptions. Coding results were obtained for each coder relative to the CC. The correct ICD codes were selected in 96% of cases for H2, 92% for H1, 91% for T, and 86% for H3. The three human coders agreed on 222 (75%) injuries. The correct 7 digit AIS codes (six identifying digits and the severity digit) were selected in 93% of cases for H2, 87% for T, 77% for H3, and 73% for H1. The correct AIS severity codes (seventh digit only) were selected in 98.3% of cases for H2, 96.3% for T, 93.9% for H3, and 90.8% for H1. On the basis of the weighted kappa statistic TRI-CODE had excellent agreement with the correct coding (CC) of AIS severities. Each human coder had excellent agreement with CC and with TRI-CODE. Coders H1 and H2 were in excellent agreement. Coder H3 was in good agreement with H1 and H2. However, errors among the human coders often occur for different codes, accentuating the variability.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract: A large international collaboration from the high energy astrophysics community has proposed the Tracking and Imaging Gamma Ray Experiment (TIGRE) for future space observations. TIGRE will image and perform energy spectroscopy measurements on celestial sources of gamma rays in the energy range from 1 to 100 MeV. This has been a difficult energy range experimentally for gamma ray astronomy but is vital for the future considering the recent exciting measurements below 1 and above 100 MeV. TIGRE is both a double scatter Compton and gamma ray pair telescope with direct imaging of individual gamma ray events.Multi‐layers of Si strip detectors are used as Compton and pair converters CsI(Tl) scintillation detectors are used as a position sensitive calorimeter. Alternatively, thick GE strip detectors may be used for the calorimeter. Abstract: During the third flight of the FIGARO II experiment on July 9th 1990 the Crab pulsar PSR0531+21 has been kept in the axis of the telescope during 7.5 hours.On line analysis showed the pulsar light curve with only 5 minutes of data acquisition time.The complete analysis of the observation will probably help to search for gamma ray line in the pulsed part of the spectrum.Particularly a line around 450 keV has been previously detected by some experiments but at low statistical level and attributed ambiguously to the Nebula.

Abstract: Pulsed γ radiation from the Geminga pulsar was recorded by the COS B satellite from 50 MeV to 5 GeV between 1975 and 1982. It has been analysed to derive the source spectral properties as a function of time and phase. The two main peaks are separated by 0.50 ± 0.01 in phase. Significant pulsed emission has also been detected in both phase regions between the two main peaks. Significant spectral differences with phase have been found; the emission from the first peak is slightly softer than from the second one and the Interpeak 2 radiation is extremely soft. The first peak emission remained stable within the statistics over 7 years while the flux from the other phase intervals changed significantly with time. The phase dependence of the variability implies that all the observed source emission should be pulsed and that it consists of four discrete beams with different apertures and spectra. Abstract: The Crab pulsar (PSR0531 + 21) was one of the earliest identified sources of high-energy γ radiation1–6. As such it was selected as the first object of detailed study by ESA's γ-ray astronomy satellite COS B, launched in August 1975. The experiment and mission have been described elsewhere7. In the first 6 yr of operation COS B has made five observations (each of 30–40 days duration) in which PSR0531 + 21 was within 15° of the centre of the field of view. The first of these confirmed the result of the SAS 2 experiment that the γ-ray light curve for energies above a few tens of MeV consisted essentially of two equally strong peaks but the later measurements found a decrease in the strength of the second peak relative to the first. No change was observed in the 2–12 keV X-ray light curve simultaneously measured by COS B. The total data from the five observations contain the first evidence of interpulse emission between the two peaks in the energy range 50–3,000 MeV.

Abstract: The paper presents a large area, balloon borne, NaI(Tl) detector for low-energy gamma rays with temporal signature: Figaro. The main detector is a mosaic of 12 NaI(Tl) tiles 22.5 x 15 x 5 cm, for a total geometric area of 4050 sq cm. In the energy band 140 keV-6 MeV, the expected background counting rate at float altitude is in the range of two to three thousand counts per second. For pulsar analysis the expected 3sigma sensitivity for 5 hours exposition time is 2.5 10 to the -4th ph/sq cm.s.MeV (150-500 keV) 1.5 10 to the -4th ph/sq cm.s.MeV (1-6 MeV). This performance, together with the large effective area and the relatively short duration of a balloon flight, make Figaro particularly suitable for the identification of sources by means of temporal analysis. For objectives in the Northern sky, including the Crab pulsar, a transmediterranean flight is planned for the summer of 1982 a Southern mission is scheduled in Brazil for the fall of 1983 (Vela, PSR 1822-09).

Abstract: When we talk of Gamma-Ray Astronomy we refer in general to celestial photons covering the energy domain from a fraction of MeV up to the highest detected energies at hundreds or thousands of GeV. The six to seven decades altogether spanning the overall energy range constitute a very wide domain to be compared with those of the optical (less than one decade) or of the neighbouring X-Ray Astronomy (about two decades). The observational technique varies widely with changing energy; detector performances and characteristic parameters are not, in general, comparable.

Abstract: Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. Abstract: When we talk of Gamma-Ray Astronomy we refer in general to ce lestial photons covering the energy domain from a fraction of MeV up to the highest detected energies at hundreds or thousands of GeV. The six to seven decades altogether spanning the overall energy range constitute a very wide domain to be compared with those of the optical (less than one decade) or of the neighbouring X-Ray Astronomy (about two decades). The observational technique varies widely with changing energy; detector performances and characteristic parameters are not, in general, comparable. All of this has inevitably introduced, for the Gamma-Ray field, an additional subdivision in at least three sub-sectors: Low and Medium Energy : 0.1 to 20–30 MeV. Intermediate and High Energy: 30 MeV to 5–10 GeV. Very High Energy : the region beyond.

Abstract: This test plan describes the objectives, power system, instrumentation, and data processing for a utility off-peak photovoltaic power system to be tested at the MIT/LL Photovoltaic Systems Test Bed. This plan constitutes the first in a series of residential PV system tests that will be conducted at this facility. When subsequent tests are defined, they will be described in a test plan similar to this one. This test is designed to represent a residential system powering the diversified electrical load (stove, refrigerator, dryer, etc.) of a single-family residence. An 8-kW photovoltaic array is used along with 50-kW of lead-acid battery storage and a 6-kW dc-to-ac inverter. Leads, using actual appliances, are timer controlled to represent a typical residential usage profile and backup electrical power is provided by the local utility in an off-peak-only basis.

Abstract: We report on the BeppoSAX observations of the gamma-ray blazar PKS 0528+134 performed in Feb and Mar 1997, during a multiwavelength campaign involving EGRET and ground based telescopes. The source was in a faint and hard state, with energy spectral index alpha=0.48+-0.04 between 0.1 and 10 keV, and [2-10] keV flux of 2.7E-12 erg/cm2/s. No significant variability was observed. The source was detected in the 20-120 keV band by the PDS, with a flux lying slightly above the extrapolation from lower X-ray energies. Comparing this low state with previous higher states of the source, there is an indication that the X-ray spectrum hardens and the gamma-ray spectrum steepens when the source is fainter., 4 pages, LateX, 5 figures (included). Abstract: We present preliminary results of Beppo SAX and ASCA observations of the Galactic field containing the unidentified γ-ray transient GRO J1838-04. Several weak X-ray sources are detected within the EGRET error box. No obvious counterpart of GRO J1838-04 is evident from these observations. More multiwavelength observations are necessary to identify the nature of this non-blazar γ-ray transient.

Abstract: The unique pulsar/Be star system PSR B1259-63/SS2883 [1] had their second “usable” periastron fly-by on May 29 ∼ 19:00 UT ( T ). The original plan of observing the pulsar with the BeppoSAX NFIs some two months before and after periastron and to monitor it during the passage with five, one week interleaved observations, could not be accomplished. PSR B1259-63 was instead observed five times by BeppoSAX during 1997: on March 22 ( T -68 days) and on September 2, 8, 17, 25 ( T +96, 102, 111, 118 days) for a total exposure time of 178.7 ks for each MECS and 36.1 ks for the LECS. Here we present the preliminary results from the spectral and temporal analysis and compare them with previous ROSAT and ASCA observations.

49. Statistical significance of the 59-s periodicity of Geminga and 1EO630 + 178

Abstract: Bignami et al.1 have reported evidence for an increasing 59-s period in the X-ray emission from the high-energy (E ≳ 50 MeV) γ-ray source Geminga. Their claim is based on results of a search for periodicities at around 59s in the emission from the X-ray source 1EO630 + 178, which has been proposed as a possible counterpart of Geminga2. We show here that the primitive indication by SAS-2 (ref. 3) of a 59-s periodicity in the γ-ray flux from Geminga is not statistically significant, and because it has also not been confirmed by COS-B (ref. 4), must be disregarded; the statistical significance of the results obtained from periodicity searches in the X-ray data is significantly lower than that reported by Bignami et al.1. As a consequence, the identification of 1E0630 + 178 with the γ-ray source 2CG195 + 04 (Geminga) through a 59-s pulsation cannot be claimed.

Abstract: THE discovery of a high-energy γ-ray source at α(1950) = 12h 29 min±6 min, δ(1950)= +3°±1.5° is reported here. Arguments are given for the identification with 3C273. If this identification is correct, the γ-ray luminosity of 3C273 in the energy range 50–500 MeV is 2×1046 erg s−1 for H0 = 60 km s−1 Mpc−1.
