Abstract

The contiguity processor of the Delphi detector, which is composed of 12 Fastbus modules (one for each time-projection-chamber sector), is the main second-level track trigger component in the experiment. More than 3000 MIPS (million instructions per second) of processing power are achieved by 4608 processing elements (PEs) packed in specially designed application-specific integrated circuits. High interconnectivity among PEs (bidimensional lattice) and a highly parallel algorithm (contiguity mask) allow a three-dimensional vertex reconstruction less than 5 mu s. An overview of the single-instruction multiple-data architecture together with the programming language and the interactive debugging tools for the processor are given. >

Abstract

The lifetime of the tau lepton has been measured by two independent methods using a silicon microvertex detector installed in the DELPHI detector. The signed impact parameter distribution of the one prong decays yielded a lifetime of ττ = 321 ± 36 (stat.) ± 16 (syst.) fs, while the decay length distribution of three prong decays gave the result ττ = 310 ± 31 (stat.) ± 9 (syst.) fs. The final value of the combined result was ττ = 314 ± 25 fs. The ratio of the Fermi coupling constant from tau decay relative to that from muon decay was found to be 0.95 ± 0.04, compatible with the hypothesis of lepton universality., 0, info:eu-repo/semantics/published
