This is a content analysis of coverage by the Seattle Times, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Seattle Star (mainstream papers), and the Northwest Enterprise (NWE, a Black press weekly newspaper) of the 1938 Berry Lawson police brutality case in Seattle, Washington. This study proposed to answer three research questions: (1) How did each type of news organization, Eurocentric and Black, frame the Lawson case? (2) Are these frames the same for both types of papers? (3) If not, how do the papers frame the case differently? The NWE's frame was Afrocentric. The mainstream papers' frame was Eurocentric. DNA mismatch repair (DMR) functions to maintain genome stability. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells deficient in DMR show a microsatellite instability (MSI) phenotype characterized by repeat length alterations at microsatellite sequences. Mice deficient in Pms2, a mammalian homolog of bacterial mutL, develop cancer and display MSI in all tissues examined, including the male germ line where a frequency of ~10% was observed. To determine the consequences of maternal DMR deficiency on genetic stability, we analyzed [F.sub.1] progeny from [Pms2.sup.-/-] female mice mated with wild-type males. Our analysis indicates that MSI in the female germ line was ~9%. MSI was also observed in paternal alleles, a surprising result since the alleles were obtained from wild-type males and the embryos were therefore DMR proficient. We propose that mosaicism for paternal alleles is a maternal effect that results from Pms2 deficiency during the early cleavage divisions. The absence of DMR in one-cell embryos leads to the formation of unrepaired replication errors in early cell divisions of the zygote. The occurrence of postzygotic mutation in the early mouse embryo suggests that Pms2 deficiency is a maternal effect, one of a limited number identified in the mouse and the first to involve a DNA repair gene.

DNA mismatch repair gene PMS2 plays a role in DNA mismatch repair in several kinds of tissues. The animals lacking PMS2 seem vulnerable to sarcomas and lymphomas. PMS2 lacking males are impotent and able to produce only abnormal spermatozoa. The investigation of axial element and synaptonemal complex creation during prophase of meiosis I shows abnormalities in chromosome synapsis. These findings indicate relation among mismatch repair, genetic recombination and chromosome synapsis in meiosis.

A human gene encodes a human MutL homologue protein (hMLH1) which is similar to the bacterial DNA mismatch protein MutL. The protein hMLH1 is situated on human chromosome 3p21-23. hMLH1, like the human DNA mismatch pair gene homologue hMSH2, can be related to non-polyposis colon cancer.

In 2014 Brittany Maynard, 29, diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, moved from California to Oregon, one of few U.S. states with legal aid in dying, so she could determine when and how she would die. We used theoretical constructs of framing, ideology, and hegemony as we inductively identified frames that emerged from the coverage in prominent U.S. publications and contextualized them within existing hegemonic attitudes. Although news frames initially focused on an event (her decision), they eventually covered thematic issues underlying her decision. In 2016, the District of Columbia City Council passed the Death With Dignity Act. Afterward, Congress attempted to block its implementation by first invoking Congress's power to overturn the law and then, when unsuccessful in that effort, withhold money from the District. Previous studies examining local news media coverage of aid-in-dying legislation have identified several recurrent frames. D.C. news publications invoked those frames as well as others more specific to the District. Understanding how aid in dying and related legislation is portrayed in newspaper coverage is important as more jurisdictions consider legalization of the practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
