We analyze a dynamic credit market where banks choose lending standards, modeled as costly effort to screen out bad borrowers. Tighter standards worsen the borrower pool, increasing banks' incentives to employ tight standards in the future. This dynamic complementarity in lending standards can amplify and prolong downturns, decreasing lending and increasing credit spreads. Because lending standards have negative externalities, the market can converge to a steady state with inefficiently tight lending standards. This paper sheds light on the role of firm social connectedness in multiple banking relationships, controlling for other firm-level determinants. Using a large sample of Italian manufacturing firms, we develop novel text-based measures of firm connectedness and multiple banking relationships. We measure firm connectedness by exploiting information on the number of links that a non-financial firm has with any other non-financial firm through individuals who hold a position (such as shareholder, administrator, and technical or administrative employee) in both firms. The paper finds empirical evidence that firm connectedness is positively associated with the number of banks lending to the firm. This effect is stronger for younger, smaller, and more indebted firms, suggesting that firm connectedness favors the diffusion of soft information and ultimately their access to multiple sources of credit by reducing negotiation and transaction costs. Connectedness, on the other hand, does not seem to reduce firms' incentives to increase the number of lenders in order to minimize hold-up risks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A two-sided "credit-line channel"—relating to drawdowns and repayments—explains the severe drop and partial subsequent recovery in bank stock prices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Banks with greater exposure to undrawn credit lines saw larger stock price declines but performed better outside of crises periods. Despite deposit inflows, high drawdowns led to reduced bank lending, suggestive of capital encumbrance upon drawdowns. Repayments of credit lines unencumbered capital which explains the stock price recovery starting Q2 2020. We estimate the effect of carbon pricing policy on bank credit to greenhouse-gas-emitting firms. Our analyses exploit the geographic restrictions inherent in California's cap-and-trade bill and a discontinuity in the embedded free permit threshold of the federal Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill. Affected high emission firms face shorter loan maturities, lower access to permanent forms of bank financing, higher interest rates, and higher participation of shadow banks in their lending syndicates. These effects are concentrated among private firms, while credit terms of public firms are largely unaffected. Overall, we show that banks respond quickly to realizations of transition risk. The opening of equity markets to foreign investment by developing countries appears to generate an enormously large positive growth effect (see Bekaert, Harvey, and Lundblad (2005), Journal of Financial Economics 77, 3–55) in spite of a relatively small role of such markets for financing investment in most economies. We propose a spillover channel from equity market opening to lower costs of bank loans, which helps to explain this puzzle. From analyzing bank loan data associated with China's introduction of the Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors program, we find significant support for this channel. We compare the investment of standalone firms across regions after a positive shock to the investment opportunities generated by a large-scale highway development project. We show that the standalones' investment sensitivity is lower in regions with a higher density of business groups in the local area. We investigate mechanisms driving our results and find support for a financing mechanism whereby banks allocate capital preferentially to group-affiliated firms in responding to the increase in credit demand. Using regulatory data, we study German bank lending in countries targeted by financial sanctions. We find that domestic banks in Germany reduce lending in sanctioned countries, whereas their foreign bank affiliates outside Germany increase lending. In some cases, this is because the bank affiliates' host countries have not imposed sanctions themselves. However, even German bank affiliates in host countries that enact sanctions like Germany increase lending if these host countries lack strong institutions and anticrime policies. These findings suggest that even universally adopted sanctions distort bank capital flows and competition if the level of their enforcement varies across bank locations. We find that organization capital is negatively related to the cost of bank loans. This finding is robust to additional analyses including those that address omitted variable bias and reverse causality. In addition, we find that organization capital reduces all-in-spread-undrawn. When we decompose the bank loan cost, we find that organization capital increases facility fees due to its risk-engendering characteristics. Finally, we find that organization capital is positively associated with a high likelihood of the presence of inventors and innovation output, consistent with the argument that organization capital is embedded in the key talent within a firm. The strength of the U.S. dollar has attributes of a barometer of dollar credit conditions, with a stronger dollar associated with tighter dollar credit conditions. We find that following dollar appreciation, exporters that are more reliant on dollar-funded bank credit suffer a greater decline in credit and slowdown in exports, including those exporting to the United States. Our findings shed light on the role of the U.S. dollar in the interaction between financial globalization and international trade and show a novel channel of exchange rate transmission that goes in the opposite direction to the competitiveness channel. This paper provides the first evidence of positive bank-to-bank spillovers. I show that geographic linkages between banks that engage in home lending in the same geographic region transmit positive shocks from one bank to another. I exploit shocks to the deposit base of banks located in counties experiencing shale oil booms and show that a nonshocked bank in a nonboom county expands lending more if its linkages have greater exposure to shale booms. We identify a novel way of evergreening loans in India. A low-quality bank lends to a related party of an insolvent borrower, and the loan recipient transfers the funds to the insolvent borrower using internal capital markets. Incremental investments, interest rates charged, and loan delinquency rates collectively indicate evergreening. These loans are unlikely to represent arm's length transactions or rescue of troubled related firms by stronger firms to prevent group-wide spillover effects. Hand-collecting credit line drawdowns that firms classify as long-term debt, we first document how long-term drawdowns rise with high investment needs or weak external capital market conditions. Nearly all drawdown proceeds finance long-term investment, including M&A activity. Unrated and lower-rated firms rely more on long-term drawdowns than high or very poorly rated firms. We further find that credit lines have tighter covenants than terms loans. Drawdowns are repaid fairly quickly and often refinanced with other long-term debt. Our findings support the monitored liquidity insurance theory of credit lines and highlight that long-term drawdowns act as a valuable bridge financing mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of the state's proposal to accelerate the development of new type of forestry operating entities in rural area, we provide an analysis of how forestland‐tenure disputes affect the long‐term investment behavior through credit constraints based on the perspective of forestland‐tenure disputes. Based on the survey data of 485 new type of forestry operating entities in nine provinces across China, the empirical analysis is conducted using the Tobit model and mediating effect model, while paying attention to the heterogeneity of management scale and different entity types on the impact of new type of forestry operating entity's long‐term investment behavior. The conclusions are as follows: both forestland‐tenure disputes and dispute areas have a significant negative impact on the new type of forestry operating entity's long‐term investment. In addition, forestland‐tenure disputes not only have a direct negative impact on the long‐term investment but also have an indirect negative impact on the long‐term investment by constraining the new type of forestry operating entity's bank loan and expanding the loan gap. It is suggested to improve the forestland trading market, regulate the order of trading, and implement the policy of forest tenure mortgage to provide stable policy guarantee and external conditions for fully activating the vitality of forestland management. Purpose: In the backdrop of an increase in market-based banking activities, this paper aims to study operational efficiency of Indian banking sector during 2009–2010 through 2017–2018 considering Capital Gain and Gain from Forex Market (as desirable outputs) and Slippage (as undesirable byproducts) simultaneously, along with Advances – a desirable output considered in the traditional banking performance assessment literature. This enables to have an assessment of performance (as captured by the measured efficiency scores) of Indian Banks following an alternative viewpoint about the banking activities. The authors also explain such efficiency scores in terms of bank-specific factors, banking industry competition scenario and interest rate channel. Design/methodology/approach: Using data envelopment analysis (DEA) method, the authors estimate six alternatives but interlinked operational efficiency scores (TES) of the Indian domestic commercial banks. In the second stage, they explain such TES in terms of bank-specific factors, banking industry competition scenario and interest rate channel. Findings: The authors observe that the private sector banks as a group outperform those under public ownership. Moreover, although the private sector banks could maintain somewhat consistency in their operational efficiency performance over the sample period, public sector banks clearly show a declining tendency. The second stage econometric estimation results show that the priority sector lending has a negative effect on efficiency. Interestingly, the authors get varying results for the relationship between maturity and efficiency score depending on banks' strategies on stressed assets management. Furthermore, the analyses result that banks are not so efficient in managing relatively larger-volume loans. It is also observed that banks' efficiency positively depends on the Credit-to-Deposit (CD) ratio. It is found that the overall operational efficiency of the banks to manage their credit risk portfolio improves with a reduction in the lending rate (LR). However, the interaction of lending activities and capital market shows that with the increase in LR, corporate borrowers may switch to capital market to explore for desired funds, which may induce the banking sector to investment in capital markets and create a positive market sentiment. Originality/value: Literature, although scanty, is there dealing stressed assets of a bank as some undesirable byproducts of its operational and business activities. However, such literature mostly done within the traditional framework of banking business activities and modern market-based business activities are almost absent in the literature. This paper examines the impact of credit flows, both at the aggregated and disaggregated level, on current account balances for five Southeast Asian economies. Evidence shows that total credit flows improve the current account position, especially in India and Indonesia, in the presence of adequate financial development. Nevertheless, for China, we find that credit flows lead to a decline in current account balances. When disaggregating the total credit flows, in the case of China, we find that household credit negatively influences the current account balance while the bank and business do not have any significant effect. Similarly, for India, we find that most of the improvement in the current account from credit flows comes from household and bank credit. Interestingly, in the case of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, we find evidence of aggregation bias. The asymmetric impact of disaggregated credit flows implies that policy prescriptions based on aggregate credit flows may be ill-advised and macroeconomic policymakers must implement targeted measures for different types of credit. This paper studies the effectiveness of government‐backed credit guarantees to the infrastructure sector. We propose a two‐sector model with financial intermediary frictions so that infrastructure producers rely on bank loans to finance production. Governments can intervene in the credit market by providing a partial guarantee. We find that a credit guarantee increases infrastructure production, leading to a high fiscal multiplier in the longer run. In the near term, however, higher infrastructure‐sector wages crowd out private‐sector labor supply. Importantly, the higher leverage associated with credit expansion raises nonperforming loans, and this channel is particularly pronounced if the government‐backed credit guarantees linger. We document novel evidence on the spillover effect of a corporate control regulation on local mortgage markets. We find that banks directly targeted by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) to rectify their internal control weaknesses reduce mortgage originations following the regulation's enactment. This causes mortgage credit to be reallocated toward other banks in the same local markets: while competing public banks expand lending to safer borrowers, private banks increase lending toward risky applicants. This paper presents an investigation of the interconnection between firm size and efficiency under the financial constraints lens. Specifically, we used the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique to measure the efficiency of a sample of large, medium-sized and small private Italian firms, using the firms' default risk as an undesirable output. Our findings indicate that larger companies perform better than medium-sized and smaller companies in terms of efficiency (across all business profiles), including default on bank loans. Based on indicators widely employed to characterize the bank-firm relationship, our study demonstrates the need to improve the efficiency of the Italian entrepreneurial system, consisting mainly of small companies, through their dimensional growth. This paper examines the impact of three culturally endorsed leadership prototypes on bank lending corruption. We bring together studies that approach the corruption of bank lending officers from the perspective of a principal-agent problem and studies from the leadership literature, suggesting leadership as an alternative to contractual solutions to agency problems. We hypothesize, based on these views, that culturally endorsed leadership styles that improve (worsen) the leader-subordinate relationships have a negative (positive) effect on bank lending corruption. Using a sample of around 3,500 firms from 36 countries, we find that the prosocial leadership prototype and the nonautonomous leadership prototype do not matter, whereas the self-serving leadership prototype has a positive and statistically significant effect on bank lending corruption. These findings are robust to the inclusion of various control variables in the regressions, and alternative estimation approaches, including ones that account for endogeneity concerns. Furthermore, we find that the power of bank regulators and the age of the credit information sharing mechanism play a moderating role in the relationship between the self-serving leadership prototype and bank lending corruption. This paper explores the effects of bank lending shocks on the export behavior of Spanish firms. For that purpose, we combine data on exports at the firm‐product‐destination level with a matched bank‐firm dataset incorporating information on the universe of corporate loans from 2002 to 2013. Armed with this dataset, we identify bank‐year specific credit supply shocks and estimate their impact on firms' exports at the product‐destination level. Do banks price the risk of stranded fossil fuel reserves? To address this question, we hand collect global data on corporate fossil fuel reserves from 2002 to 2016, match it with syndicated loans, and subsequently compare the loan rate charged to fossil fuel firms — along their climate policy exposure — to other firms. We find that banks price climate policy exposure, especially after 2015. We also uncover that our main effect further increases for loans with longer maturity, that loan size to fossil fuel firms increases, and that ‛Green' banks also charge higher loan rates to fossil fuel firms. We investigate how negative news coverage of borrower's impacts on climate change affects bank loan contracting. Using a sample of publicly traded US firms for the period 2000–2016, we show that loans initiated following negative news coverage about firm's adverse climate-related incidents have significantly higher spreads, shorter maturities, more covenant restrictions, and a higher likelihood of collateral security requirements. We find no changes in client firm's credit fundamentals after such incidents, indicating that lender's reputational concerns rather than the longer-term environmental impacts of their borrower's actions are the primary drivers of these changes. This observation highlights the need for increased scrutiny of banks' lending practices to ensure that they are genuinely committed to sustainability rather than merely engaging in symbolic actions. The post-deployment challenges in developing and upgrading blockchain smart contracts necessitate a high level of accuracy in their development and business logic. However, current methodologies for verifying the business logic of smart contracts frequently fail to address their alignment with end-user business requirements. This paper introduces a two-step language transformation process to bridge this gap. Initially, we establish a transformation rule from the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) to Prolog, enabling the translation of business processes into a Prolog representation. This step not only validates the business process logic but also ensures it meets user specifications. Subsequently, we introduce a transformation rule from the BPMN to Go, which facilitates the transformation of the BPMN model, once validated, into a Go language smart contract. To enhance usability, we have engineered a dedicated tool that streamlines this transformation process. We present a case study involving a banking loan process to exemplify the utility of our tool in creating BPMN diagrams, conducting requirement and syntax validations, and effecting the transformation to Go smart contracts. The case study and empirical results suggest that our methodology and the accompanying tool mitigate the complexities inherent in smart contract development. This paper aims to improve the level of social credit system and the accuracy and efficiency of bank users' credit scoring by using business intelligence technology based on deep neural network (DNN). Firstly, based on the theory of personal credit evaluation factors, a comprehensive credit evaluation factor system is constructed, taking into account social and economic background, consumption habits, behavior patterns and other factors. Meanwhile, back propagation neural network (BPNN) theory is introduced as the core method of modeling to cope with the nonlinear relationship in the credit scoring task and the demand of large-scale data processing. Secondly, by analyzing the operation process of BPNN in detail, the specific application in credit scoring model is emphasized. Finally, on the basis of theory and operation, this paper implements a credit scoring model for bank users based on BPNN theory. The experimental results show that the model realized in this paper can automatically discover the key attributes and internal rules in the sampled data, and adjust the weight and threshold of the network by modifying the parameters and network structure to meet the expected requirements. The accuracy of the credit score of the predicted sample data reaches 99.5%, and the prediction error is very small, which has a good prediction effect. This paper provides a feasible solution for business intelligence and DNN in the field of credit scoring, and also provides strong empirical support for improving the level of social credit system. At the heart of the Eurozone crisis was a dramatic divergence in interest rates between member states and a reversal of previously booming cross-border credit expansion from 'core' to 'periphery' by European banks. The resulting crisis and retreat behind national borders across the Eurozone challenged European elites' decade-long project of producing European scale as a space for financial accumulation. The Eurozone crisis has been well-described but post-crisis geographies of financial integration have received limited attention. We chart the financial positionality of member states and the relations between them in the period 2012–2019 using a variety of metrics including intra-Eurozone cross-border bank lending. The post-crisis period is dominated by the European Central Bank's determination to do 'whatever it takes' to save the Euro and its financial system. The resulting asset purchases give it a qualitatively different place in the Eurozone financial system and end the crisis period's retreat behind national borders. But they do not restore pre-crisis dynamics, and, in addition, unevenness along national lines remains. The crisis era core and peripheral labels still hold but the data also reveal important nuances: not least that the distribution of giant banks matters and offshore financial centres cut across core/periphery boundaries. Yet, even as there is no return to booming core-to-periphery credit, German lending into the Eurozone and its counterpart, Italian borrowing, symbolizes the continuing fragility of the Eurozone banking system. This article analyzes the factors that impact allowance for impairment losses on banks in Indonesia, after the implementation of Indonesian Financial Accounting Standards (IFAS) 71. IFAS 71 became effective in 2020, replacing IFAS 55. IFAS 71 introduced several new methods for calculating the allowance for impairment losses. We collected data from conventional banks listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2016--2020. We created two models: the first will test the impact of several key factors like loans provided by banks, non-performing loans, and interest income towards allowance for impairment losses, while the second will test IFAS 71 implementation for these factors towards allowance for impairment losses. Out of these three factors, we concluded loans provided by banks hurt impairment loss allowance while the other two have a positive effect, regardless of IFAS 71 implementation. However, while this allowance is found to be higher after IFAS 71, the three key factors do not have a significantly stronger effect after IFAS 71 implementation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates whether bank credit extended to the non-financial private business sector may be boosting regional economic growth in Mexico. For this purpose, a panel of annual data by state for the period 2005-2018 was constructed and dynamic model estimations were carried out using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). The results suggest that increases in the level of bank credit extended to private non-financial firms increased the state's GDP per capita growth, a result consistent with the emphasis in Mexico - and internationally - regarding the need to promote policy measures that stimulate the healthy development of a country's financial system. Furthermore, the research offers some counterfactuals to analyze the effect on a state's GDP per capita growth rate when it moves from a lower to a higher quartile within the CREDIT allocation. This analysis is therefore expected to reveal more information about the systemic efficiency of the banking system and better capture the contractual relationships between banks and their clients, something that is impossible to obtain from country-level data from international studies. In this study, we explore the relationship among debt capacity, cash holdings and financial constraints by using the deviation in leverage as a proxy for debt capacity. Our findings show a positive relationship between cash holdings and debt capacity. Furthermore, financially constrained firms benefit more from holding cash that leads to larger increases in debt capacity and easier access to bank loans and credit lines by reducing the heterogeneous beliefs of creditors. Keyword analysis reveals emerging trends, including the influence of ESG factors on banks' financial performance, regional variations in ESG integration within banking, and risk assessment related to ESG factors and credit risk in banks. Beyond the 2007–2008 financial crisis, the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank and the acquisition of Credit Suisse by the Swiss investment bank UBS Group AG in 2023 have brought fresh attention to the need for new regulatory capital, liquidity risk management, and leverage requirements. To meet tightened capital requirements, banks have to increase their capital ratios either by increasing equity or by decreasing risk-weighted assets. Both options lead to banks' performance deterioration. One remedy for banks to recover is raising their lending spread. A critical question is how much the lending spread should be increased to offset the drop in the bank's financial performance level. In this study, we focus on the asymmetries and efficiency consequences of performance indices such as economic value added (EVA) and the more commonly used return on equity (ROE) in determining the loan spread. Using data on the largest U.S. banks over the period 2018–2022, our results show that the ROE rule significantly overestimates the magnitude of the lending spreads required to offset the negative financial consequences of increases in capital ratios. The EVA approach, on the other hand, prescribes on average a significantly lower lending spread of 0.4505 basis points against a lending spread of 21.0441 basis points associated with the use of the ROE approach. The efficiency and the level of lending spreads should enable banks to maintain their competitive advantages in the loan markets impacting overall economic productivity and growth. This paper investigates the impact of US uncertainty shocks on China's macroeconomy with a focus on the dynamic response of investment. Using a structural vector autoregression (VAR) model, we find that the wait-and-see mechanism of aggregate investment in the face of heightened US uncertainty disappears in China. Robust evidence confirms that the increase in state-owned enterprises' investment in response to heightened uncertainty explains this puzzle, while private-owned enterprises' investment decreases as expected. We apply regime-dependent local projections to link uncertainty shocks with credit regimes to explore whether the impact of US uncertainty shocks on investment in China has varied over time in connection with the states of bank loans. The empirical results support a positive response of state-owned enterprises' investment to increased US uncertainty during the tightening of medium- and long-term bank loans but a negative reaction when short-term bank loans are tightening. Finally, we show that economic policy uncertainty conveying political signals leads to a decline in state-owned enterprises' investment. This study uses matched firm‐bank‐FDI data from 1989 to 2016 to explore how a firm's financial constraints affect its foreign affiliate ownership structure choice. Importantly, it tests the hypothesis that parent firms with banks as their largest shareholders hold lower ownership shares in their foreign subsidiaries, in part due to typical bank risk‐averse behaviour. The empirical analysis confirms that foreign subsidiary ownership ratios are negatively associated with parent firms' debt ratios. Moreover, this study finds evidence that greater bank ownership of the investing parent leads to lower foreign affiliate ownership shares. However, this result is not robust to two specifications: 'crisis times' when bank lending is greatly restricted to all borrowers, and a follow‐the‐customer relationship where the bank already has an overseas subsidiary in the host country. This paper explores the relationship between legal origin, revenue diversification, and bank lending behavior. The analysis is based on a sample of 2590 commercial banks operating in 139 developing countries from 2004 to 2022. Using various panel data estimation techniques and alternative measures of bank lending behavior, the results indicate that banks in common law countries experience lower levels of loan growth compared to their counterparts in civil law countries. The study results also show that revenue diversification indirectly alleviates the negative effect of loan growth in banks originating from a common law legal origin. Notably, this effect is not observed in banks within low‐income and African countries, highlighting the importance of policies aimed at enhancing institutional capacity within their legal and judicial systems. Institutional investors increasingly hold firms in both the industrial and financial sectors. These cross-industry holdings link firms to "outside" banks that they have not borrowed from, creating a network between the two sectors. We show that such networks reduce firms' loan spreads. This effect is more prominent when cross-holders are actively involved in borrowers' routine operations and when they have stronger incentives to advocate for borrowers in the loan process. Furthermore, outside banks begin to lend more to firms once the two parties become linked. This network is "behind-the-scenes" because it does not arise from prior interactions between firms and banks, but is instead built through institutions' cross-holdings. Leveraging on a new quarterly dataset of capital control adjustments, we find renewed evidence that the introduction or tightening of capital controls in one economy increases capital inflows to other similar borrowing economies, an effect often called capital flow deflection. However, not all flows are deflected alike. Capital flow deflection is primarily driven by portfolio investment and bank credit, and only controls targeting these types of flows generate this externality. Moreover, analysing bilateral capital flows in order to capture investing countries' characteristics, we find that capital controls tend to deflect flows from advanced economies' portfolio equity investors, while controls on bank‐related flows primarily deflects lending from emerging market banks. We investigate the bank lending channel of negative nominal policy rates from an empirical and theoretical perspective. For the empirical results, we rely on Swedish data, including daily bank-level lending rates. We find that retail household deposit rates are subject to a lower bound (DLB). Empirically, once the DLB is met, the pass-through to mortgage lending rates and credit volumes is substantially lower and bank equity values decline in response to further policy rate cuts. We construct a banking sector model and use our estimate of the pass-through of negative policy rates to lending rates as an identified moment to parameterize the model and assess the impact of negative policy rates in general equilibrium. We collected over 1600 estimates on the relationship between bank capital and lending and construct 40 variables to capture the context in which these estimates are obtained. Accounting for potential publication bias, we find that a 1 percentage point (pp) increase in capital (regulatory) ratio results in around 0.3 pp increase in annual credit growth, while changes to capital requirements cause a decrease of around 0.7 pp. Using Bayesian and frequentist model averaging, we show that the relationship between bank capital and lending changes over time, reflecting the post‐crisis period of increasingly demanding bank capital regulation and subdued profitability. We also find that the reported estimates of semi‐elasticities are significantly influenced by the empirical approach chosen by researchers. Our findings suggest that the literature fails to provide policymakers with reliable estimates of the effects of capital regulation on bank lending, and our study offers insights that could help guide future research. Purpose: This study analyzed the impact on the persistence of Chilean university students who had received a government-guaranteed loan (CAE). Design/methodology/approach: Using academic and administrative data from 2016 to 2019, provided by 11 Chilean universities, a discrete-time survival model was constructed. The model was based on data of 5,276 students in the 2016 cohort and included sociodemographic variables, academic background prior to entering university and academic performance once in university. As a robustness check of our results to observable confounding, the analysis was repeated using a control group constructed using propensity score matching (PSM). Findings: The results reveal that students who receive a bank loan (CAE) were more likely to remain in undergraduate studies for at least the first two years of university, as opposed to their peers who did not receive financial aid. In addition, they show the importance of academic performance in retention. Originality/value: The article advances in the identification of the impact of bank loans on permanence. Although previous research has evaluated the impact of the CAE, it has been conducted on small samples of students. These studies also lacked student records associated with their academic performance at the university. We examine the relation between disaster risk and banks' loan loss provisions (LLP). We propose a disaster risk measure based on the natural disasters declared as major disasters by the Federal Emergency Management Agency over a 15-year span. We theoretically support and empirically validate our measure using three different approaches, including the UN Sendai Framework for disaster risk reduction, which relates disaster risk to natural hazard exposure, vulnerability and capacity, and hazard characteristics. Using more than 445,000 bank-quarter observations, we document that banks located in U.S. counties with higher disaster risk recognize larger LLP after controlling for other bank-level factors related to LLP. We employ several techniques to ensure the robustness of our findings, including difference-in-differences estimation and matched samples. In additional analysis, we explore the characteristics that better enable banks to recognize disaster risk in their LLP, and investigate the consequences of managing disaster risk through LLP. Our results are important, especially because of the increasing concern about disaster risk and because they inform the growing debate on the economic consequences of disaster risk and the ability of the banking system to proactively manage the resulting credit risk through LLP. The Dutch health system is financed predominantly by commercial bank loans, especially after the market-oriented reform in 2006, when government investment guarantees were abandoned. Commercial capital markets were envisaged to improve efficient capital allocation and management. We analyzed the effects of commercial bank loans on interest rates, investments and allocative efficiency in the Dutch healthcare sector. We aimed to explain variation in interest rates by financial performance of healthcare providers, hypothesizing that the reform reduced interest rates for financially well-performing providers. Using financial data from publicly available annual reports, we explored the effect of financial performance on long-term loan interest rates through pooled linear regressions. Our data showed that financial reserves have steadily increased, although profitability margins have declined since 2011–2013 (depending on the sector). While nominal interest rates have generally declined since 2006, the risk surplus on healthcare loans has steadily increased. Furthermore, we observed no significant relation between the financial performance of healthcare providers and interest rates on capital loans. Maintaining additional financial reserves provided no apparent benefit to capital costs. This suggests that healthcare providers may consider whether financial reserves should be maintained at current levels or can better be used for direct investments. Moreover, healthcare policymakers should evaluate whether the increase in risk surplus combined with an apparent lack of reward for financial scrutiny is a desired outcome of the reform. Purpose: The marginalisation of female entrepreneurs in accessing credit is well documented. Yet, how female entrepreneurs navigate through the marginalisation to gain funding is under-explored. Design/methodology/approach: The authors address this gap using qualitative data from 30 female entrepreneurs in three neighbourhoods with varying socio-economic characteristics in Ghana's capital, Accra. Findings: The authors find a marked aversion to bank loans among respondents. Consequently, they nurtured trust in their social circles in order to facilitate access to informal credit from internal (e.g. family and friends) and external (e.g. trade credit, associations and religious organisations) sources. This aversion to loans from formal financial institutions (FFIs) had a socio-cultural aspect, including cumbersome application procedures, a deep-rooted fear of the social consequences of defaulting and religious prohibition against interest payment for Islamic traders. Social implications: This paper shows that providing formal access to credit is not enough to support women's entrepreneurship if the socio-cultural factors inhibiting women's access to credit from FFIs are not addressed. Originality/value: The findings suggest that trust is an important factor that bridges the gap in female entrepreneurs' access to funding given their heavy reliance on informal sources of funding.
