Abstract

Solar radiation is made up of three components of electromagnetic waves: infrared, visible and ultraviolet. The infrared component is the cause of thermal energy, the visible spectrum allows to see through the eyes and the ultraviolet component is the most energetic and damaging. Solar radiation has several benefits, such as helping to synthesize vitamin D in the skin, favors blood circulation, among others benefits for the human body. In the Earth, it is the main source of energy for agriculture, also used as an alternative source of energy to hydrocarbons, through solar cells. The solar irradiance represents the surface power density with units W/m$^2$ in SI. Too much exposure can cause damage and an increase in value over the time can be can be also damaging. In this work it was used an open data base provided by Secretar\'ia del Medio Ambiente, from which a statistical analysis was performed of the solar irradiance values measured at various meteorological stations in Mexico City and the so-called metropolitan area, from 2018 to 2021. This analysis was carried out per years, months and days. From the solar irradiance values distributions, it was obtained the averages, maximums and means were it was found there was no variation in the solar irradiance values over this period of years.

Abstract

The solar radiation are electromagnetic waves, composed of infrared, visible spectrum and ultraviolet. The infrared component is the cause of thermal energy, the visible spectrum allows to see and the ultraviolet component is the most energetic part and dangerous for the human body (skin and eyes). The ultraviolet rays are divided in a wavelength range, in three parts; called UVA (100-280 nm), UVB (280-315 nm) and UVC (315-400 nm). The UVC are the most energetic (followed by the UVB rays ), however are stopped in the ozone layer. In this work it shown a statistical analysis of the UVB index measured by five station in Mexico City, from the years 2000 to 2022. Through a Gaussian fit distribution, it was found that the range when the IUVB value exceeds the value of seven, which is from 11:00 to 16:00, having an average mean value of 13:09 hrs. $\pm$ 4 min. i.e. the time at which the UVB index reaches its maximum value. This occurs in the months from February to October. More than 80% of radiation is for UVB values less than 7 and less than the remaining 20% is for IUVB values greater than 7. Finally, it was possible to observe that the mean value per year, reaches its maximum when the solar cycles occurs, which was in the years 2003 and 2013.

3. Characterization in Geant4 of different PET configurations

Abstract

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a Nuclear Medicine technique that creates images that allow the study of metabolic activity and organ function using radiopharmaceuticals. Continuous improvement of scintillation detectors for radiation in PET as well as improvement in electronic detectors (e.g., SiPMs) and signal processing, makes the field of PET a fast and changing environment. If industry desires to build new systems implementing these technological improvements, it is of its interest to develop modelling strategies that can provide information on how to build them, reducing time and material costs. Bearing this in mind three different PET configurations, were simulated in Geant4, to determine which one presented the best performance according to quality parameters such as spatial resolution (SR), coincident time resolution (CTR) and acceptance value (A). This was done with three different (in size) pairs of LYSO crystals + SiPM detectors. It was found that the 2 Modules system presented worst results than the two Ring detector configurations. Between the Ring configurations the first was marginally better than the second.

Abstract

The radiolysis of water is an important study in microdosimetry, one of the resulting and important molecules in this study is the $OH^-$. Theoretical quantum mechanics calculations are used to obtain the differential cross section for the elastic collision, first excited state and ionization of water molecule. For the ionization case, obtaining $OH^-$ is studied. As incident particles are considered electrons and protons, independently for each phenomena previously mentioned. The differential cross section was obtained by the amplitude function. The water molecule model used to calculations consisted by the two protons of the hydrogen atom that make up the water molecule and the structure-less and doubly charged oxygen. For the proton incident particle case, the identical particle analysis was used. The results show the angular dependence and therefore the interference phenomenon between the incident wave and the deflected wave

Abstract

Considering the lack of consensus related to the impact of selective IL-6 receptor inhibition on bone remodeling and the scarcity of reports, especially on large bone defects, this study proposed to evaluate the biological impact of the selective inhibitor of interleukin-6 receptor (tocilizumab) in an experimental model of critical calvarial defect in rats. In this preclinical and in vivo study, 24 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups (n=12/group): defect treated with collagen sponge (CG) and defect treated with collagen sponge associated with 2 mg/kg tocilizumab (TCZ). The defect in the parietal bone was created using an 8-mm diameter trephine drill. After 90 days, the animals were euthanized, and tissue samples (skull caps) were evaluated through micro-CT, histological, immunohistochemistry, cytokines, and RT-qPCR analyses. Tocilizumab reduced mononuclear inflammatory infiltration (P0.05). The bone cells (osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes) in the defect area were similar in both groups (P>0.05). Tocilizumab reduced inflammatory cytokines, decreased osteogenic protein, and increased proteases in a critical bone defect in rats. Ninety days after the local application of tocilizumab in the cranial defect, we did not find a significant formation of bone tissue compared with a collagen sponge.

Abstract

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. 9. DNA damage modeled with Geant4-DNA: effects of plasmid DNA conformation and experimental conditions

Abstract

The chemical stage of the Monte Carlo track-structure (MCTS) code Geant4-DNA was extended for its use in DNA strand break (SB) simulations and compared against published experimental data. Geant4-DNA simulations were performed using pUC19 plasmids (2686 base pairs) in a buffered solution of DMSO irradiated by60Co or137Csγ-rays. A comprehensive evaluation of SSB yields was performed considering DMSO, DNA concentration, dose and plasmid supercoiling. The latter was measured using the super helix density value used in a Brownian dynamics plasmid generation algorithm. The Geant4-DNA implementation of the independent reaction times method (IRT), developed to simulate the reaction kinetics of radiochemical species, allowed to score the fraction of supercoiled, relaxed and linearized plasmid fractions as a function of the absorbed dose. The percentage of the number of SB after •OH + DNA and H• + DNA reactions, referred as SSB efficiency, obtained using MCTS were 13.77% and 0.74% respectively. This is in reasonable agreement with published values of 12% and 0.8%. The SSB yields as a function of DMSO concentration, DNA concentration and super helix density recreated the expected published experimental behaviors within 5%, one standard deviation. The dose response of SSB and DSB yields agreed with published measurements within 5%, one standard deviation. We demonstrated that the developed extension of IRT in Geant4-DNA, facilitated the reproduction of experimental conditions. Furthermore, its calculations were strongly in agreement with experimental data. These two facts will facilitate the use of this extension in future radiobiological applications, aiding the study of DNA damage mechanisms with a high level of detail.

10. Electric charge estimation using a SensL SiPM

Abstract

The silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs) are commonly used in the construction of radiation detectors such as those used in high energy experiments and its applications, where an excellent time resolution is required for triggering. In most of this cases, the trigger systems electric charge information is discarded due to limitations in data acquisition. In this work we propose a method using a simple radiation detector based on an organic plastic scintillator $2\times2\times0.3$~cm$^3$ size, to estimate the electric charge obtained from the acquisition of the fast output signal of a SensL SiPM model C-60035-4P-EVB. Our results suggest a linear relation between the reconstructed electric charge from the fast output of the SiPM used with respect to the one reconstructed with its standard signal output. Abstract

We compute the Lambda and anti-Lambda global polarization in semi-central heavy-ion collisions modeling the source as consisting of a high-density core and a less dense corona. We show that when more Lambdas than anti-Lambdas are produced in the corona, and this is combined with a smaller number of Lambdas coming from the core, as compared to those coming from the corona, an amplification effect for the anti-Lambda with respect to that of Lambda polarization can occur. This amplification becomes more important for lower collision energies and quantitatively accounts for the Lambda and anti-Lambda polarizations measured by the STAR beam energy scan., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Agriculture is one of the most critical activities developed today by humankind and is in constant technical evolution to supply food and other essential products to everlasting and increasing demand. New machines, seeds, and fertilizers were developed to increase the productivity of cultivated areas. It is estimated that by 2050 we will have a population of 9 billion people and the production of food to meet this demand must occur sustainably. To achieve this goal, it is paramount the adoption of sustainable management techniques for agroecosystems. However, this is a complex task due to a large number of variables involved. One of the solutions for the handling and treatment of such diverse data is the use of Green IS. In this work, we adopt a methodology called Indicators of Sustainability in Agroecosystems (Indicadores de Sustentabilidade em Agroecossistemas -- ISA), implement an information system based on it and apply Data Science techniques over the gathered data - from 100 real rural properties - to compute which are the most relevant ISA Indicators for the final ISA Sustainability Index Score. As a result, we have developed a set of tools for data collection, processing, visualization, and analysis of the sustainability of a rural property or region, following the ISA methodology. We also have that with only 7 of the 21 Indicators present in ISA we can identify the level of sustainability in more than 90% of cases, allowing for a new discussion about shrinking the amount of data needed for the computation of ISA, or remodelling the final computation of the Sustainability Index so other Indicators can be more expressive. Users of the solutions developed in this work can identify best practices for sustainability in participating agroecosystems.

Abstract

FLASH radiotherapy delivers a high dose (≥10 Gy) at a high rate (≥40 Gy/s). In this way, particles are delivered in pulses as short as a few nanoseconds. At that rate, intertrack reactions between chemical species produced within the same pulse may affect the heterogeneous chemistry stage of water radiolysis. This stochastic process suits the capabilities of the Monte Carlo method, which can model intertrack effects to aid in radiobiology research, including the design and interpretation of experiments. In this work, the TOPAS-nBio Monte Carlo track-structure code was expanded to allow simulations of intertrack effects in the chemical stage of water radiolysis. Simulation of the behavior of radiolytic yields over a long period of time (up to 50 s) was verified by simulating radiolysis in a Fricke dosimeter irradiated by 60Co γ rays. In addition, LET-dependent G values of protons delivered in single squared pulses of widths, 1 ns, 1 µs and 10 µs, were obtained and compared to simulations using no intertrack considerations. The Fricke simulation for the calculated G value of Fe3+ ion at 50 s was within 0.4% of the accepted value from ICRU Report 34. For LET-dependent G values at the end of the chemical stage, intertrack effects were significant at LET values below 2 keV/µm. Above 2 keV/µm the reaction kinetics remained limited locally within each track and thus, effects of intertrack reactions remained low. Therefore, when track structure simulations are used to investigate the biological damage of FLASH irradiation, these intertrack reactions should be considered. The TOPAS-nBio framework with the expansion to intertrack chemistry simulation provides a useful tool to assist in this task.

Abstract

We present results for time resolution studies performed on three different scintillating plastics and two silicon photo-multipliers. These studies are intended to determine whether scintillating plastic/silicon photo-multiplier systems can be employed to provide a fast trigger signal for NICA's Multi Purpose Detector (MPD). Our results show that such a system made of cells with transverse dimensions of order of a few cm, coupled to silicon photo-multipliers, provides a time resolution of about 50 ps, which can be even further improved to attain the MPD trigger requirements of 20 ps.

Abstract

The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) is to be installed at the Nuclotron Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). Its main goal is to study the phase diagram of the strongly interacting matter produced in heavy-ion collisions. These studies, while providing insight into the physics of heavy-ion collisions, are relevant for improving our understanding of the evolution of the early Universe and the formation of neutron stars. In order to extend the MPD trigger capabilities, we propose to include a high granularity beam-beam monitoring detector (BE-BE) to provide a level-0 trigger signal with an expected time resolution of 30 ps. This new detector will improve the determination of the reaction plane by the MPD experiment, a key measurement for flow studies that provides physics insight into the early stages of the reaction. In this work, we use simulated Au+Au collisions at NICA energies to show the potential of such a detector to determine the event plane resolution, providing further redundancy to the detectors originally considered for this purpose namely, the Fast Forward Detector (FFD) and the Hadron Calorimeter (HCAL). Abstract

There are currently over 160 known gamma-ray pulsars. While most of them are detected only from space, at least two are now seen also from the ground. MAGIC and VERITAS have measured the gamma ray pulsed emission of the Crab pulsar up to hundreds of GeV and more recently MAGIC has reported emission at $\sim2$ TeV. Furthermore, in the Southern Hemisphere, H.E.S.S. has detected the Vela pulsar above 30 GeV. In addition, non-pulsed TeV emission coincident with pulsars has been detected by many groups, including the Milagro Collaboration. In order to characterise the behaviour of Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) under a sudden increase of 1 GeV - 1 TeV background photons from a Gamma Ray Burst (GRB), simulations were conducted and compared to data acquired by the WCD of the Large Aperture GRB Observatory (LAGO). Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) are efficient detectors for detecting GRBs in the 10 GeV - 1 TeV energy range using the single particle technique, given their sensitivity to low energy secondary photons produced by high energy photons when cascading in the atmosphere. The Large Aperture GRB Observatory (LAGO) operates arrays of WCD in high altitude sites (above 4500 m a.s.l.) in Bolivia, Mexico and Venezuela, with planned extension to Peru. Details on the operation and stability of these WCD in remote sites with high background rates of particles will be detailed, and compared to simulations. Abstract

A new genus is described for Neonympha gripheC. Felder & R. Felder, 1867, to contribute toward a revision of the polyphyletic genus EuptychoidesForster, 1964. Based on DNA sequence data, GraphitaNakahara, Marín & Barbosa, gen. nov. is strongly supported as a member of a clade of predominantly southeastern Brazilian taxa, in which it is weakly supported as sister to a well-supported clade containing PharneuptychiaForster, 1964, MoneuptychiaForster, 1964 and the E. castrensis(Schaus, 1902) species complex. The data show that Graphita griphecomb. nov. is not related to other Euptychoidesand not very closely related to any other sampled euptychiines, and thus support the description of this new genus. In addition, we provide morphological illustrations and a distribution map for this taxon based on museum specimens.

Abstract

Radiation heat transfer is often ignored in several studies as it has few significant effects in some cases. However, when using a participating fluid, where the molecules interact with the radiative spectrum, these effects cannot be disregarded. A numerical study of the heat transfer by natural convection and radiation in two square enclosures (with and without protrusions) using a transparent (non-participating) and semi-transparent (participating) fluid medium was carried out in this study. The governing equations were discretized using the finite volume technique and solved using a CFD code ANSYS CFX. The heat transfer by radiation was modeled using the differential approach. The model proposed in this study was validated with the data available in the literature with errors of less than 3%. The results showed that the addition of the participant fluid (CO2) promotes a better condition for heat transfer. It was proven that the use of the participating medium caused an increase in the Nusselt number, indicating an increase in heat transfer by convection. The presence of protrusions reduces the thermal stratification zone for the pure convection case (CP) and provides a better temperature distribution for the cases conjugated with air (CRAIR) and CO2 (CRCO2) when compared to the cases without protrusions. It is observed that for all cases, the geometry with protrusion presented the highest values for the Nusselt number, indicating that the insertion of the protrusion increases the heat transfer in the enclosure by up to 11%. The airflow values for the conjugated cases are more than 300% higher than those presented for the pure convection case for any Rayleigh number value. The heat flow increased by up to 4 times when the radiation effect was considered. The average Nusselt number increased with the increase in the Rayleigh number and with the coupling of radiation in the energy equation. Abstract

Background: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is the most serious manifestation of rheumatic fever, which may also affect the brain. The current study assessed the prevalence of neuropsychiatric manifestations in patients with RHD, including clinical features associated with basal ganglia motor dysfunction (BGMD). Methods: We conducted neurologic and psychiatric assessments in consecutive patients with RHD referred to a tertiary center for heart valve diseases. Echocardiography was performed to assess the pattern of valvular involvement and RHD severity. Validated questionnaires for the evaluation of cognition, depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) were applied. BGMD was clinically defined by the presence of hyperkinetic movement disorders. Results: Fifty patients with age of 43.2 ± 10.8 years, 84% female, were included. Mitral valve was affected in 47 patients (94%), and 21 of them (42%) also had aortic valve involvement. Chorea (22%), chronic tics (18%), OCS (48%), major depression (34%), generalized anxiety disorder (54%), cognitive complaints (66%), migraine (52%) and seizures (18%) were frequently reported. The factors associated with BGMD were age (p = 0.018), major depression (p = 0.013), and Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive (Y-BOCS) score (p = 0.011). The severity of heart disease was not associated with BGMD. Conclusions: Neuropsychiatric manifestations are frequent in RHD patients, which may persist up to three decades after acute rheumatic fever. Age, major depression and severity of OCS were independently associated with BGMD. These manifestations deserve a close attention of clinicians and researchers dealing with adult patients with RHD. 44. Quantum Biochemical Investigation of Lys49-PLA2from Bothrops moojeni

Abstract

Envenomation via snakebites occurs largely in areas where it is harder to access the hospital. Its mortality rate and sequelae acquired by the survivors symbolize a big challenge for antivenom therapy. In particular, the homologous phospholipase A2(Lys49-PLA2) proteins can induce myonecrosis and are not effectively neutralized by current treatments. Thus, by taking advantage of crystallographic structures of Bothrops moojeniLys49-PLA2complexed with VRD (varespladib) and AIN (aspirin), a quantum biochemistry study based on the molecular fractionation with conjugate cap scheme within the density functional theory formalism is performed to unveil these complexes’ detailed interaction energies. The calculations revealed that important interactions between ligands and the Lys49-PLA2pocket could occur up to a pocket radius of r= 6.5 (5.0 Å) for VRD (AIN), with the total interaction energy of the VRD ligand being higher than that of the AIN ligand, which is well-correlated with the experimental binding affinity. Furthermore, we have identified the role played by the amino acids LYS0069, LYS0049, LEU0005, ILE0009, CYS0029, GLY0030, HIS0048, PRO0018, ALA0019, CYS0045, TYR0052, TYR0022, PRO0125*, and PHE0126* (LYS0069, LYS0049, GLY0032, LEU0002, and LEU0005) in the VRD↔Lys49-PLA2(AIN↔Lys49-PLA2) complex. Our simulations are a valuable tool to support the big challenge for neutralizing the damages in victims of snakebites.
