27. How complicated actually is genus Ornithogalum?

Abstract

In most of the studies, genus Ornithogalum is characterized as „complicated“, and species are defined as conspecific. This common in large sections such are sect. Heliocharmos, Albuca, Dipcadi, which have more than 30 species within them. The issue is evident if different identification keys are compared. Even species that have specific characteristics, i.e. O. oligophyllum, O. refractum, can easily be misidentified. In the same time, some investigations simplify genus diversity, aiming to describe most of infrageneric taxa as monophyletic. In that sense, from Ornithogalum sensu lato, 19 genera are recognized as monophyletic groups, with claim that they are easily recognized at morphological level as well. Other studies suggest that caryotype evolution went beyond phenotypic evolution. This is one of the explanations why caryotype diversity is above species diversity. All these „complications” and inconsistencies in Ornithogalum taxonomy caused the need to change the problem focus. Ornithogalum s.l. is distinguished with simple morphology. In general, genus and it representatives can be described with few informative characteristics. Problem arises after 19th and 20th century, when more than 150 species were described only in sect. Heliocharmos. Based on that, in this study we try to find out which morphological characteristics are taxonomically important, and can be interpreted efficiently in identification key. We focused on sect. Heliocharmos, distributed in Mediterranean region, and far on the east, north and west of Asia and Europe. Material used for analysis is from Balkan Peninsula, Pannonia plain and neighboring regions. Overall, 26 species, 72 quantitative and 18 qualitative morphological and micromorphological characteristics are analyzed on fresh and pressed herbarium material. For analyses were used Multiple Correspondence Analysis, Principal Component Analysis, and Discriminant Function Analysis, all performed in Statistica ver. 13.3. Taxonomically important characters for morphological recognitions of sect. Heliocharmos and its species are presented, followed by combinations of characters that are useful for description of series or aggregates. In addition, characters that are too variable for quality interpretation, or cannot be recognized in dry specimens and in every phenophase are highlighted, as insufficiently descriptive. At the end, general identification key for sect. Heliocharmos is presented.

40. Typification of names in the Dianthus plumariusgroup in the Carpatho‐Pannonian region

Abstract

Lectotypes are designated for D. plumarius, D. lumnitzeri, D. lumnitzerisubsp. pseudopraecox, D. praecox, D. serotinus(superseding a previous lectotypification) and D. serotinussubsp. kitaibelianus.Epitypes are designated for D. plumarius, D. hungaricusand D. praecox, and a neotype is designated for D. serotinusvar. regis‐stephani. The application of the name D. lumnitzeriin the sense of D. plumariussubsp. plumariusand the application of the name D. hungaricusas a collective species are adopted here. It is also concluded, that D. serotinussubsp. kitaibelianusand D. serotinusvar. regis‐stephaniwere described from the same population. According to the results of the present typifications, 4(–5) taxa of the D. plumariusgroup can be distinguished in the Carpathian Basin and the Western Carpathians.

Abstract

From 2000 onwards, the Herbarium Carpato-Pannonicum collection consisting of vascular plant specimens from the Carpathian Basin has grown rapidly and spectacularly. The registration of the last specimens of the so-called university collection transferred in 1980 from the Loránd Eötvös University to the museum was finally complete. This allowed the newly recruited botanists of the department to turn their attention towards other rewarding tasks. Several materials that had slid into oblivion were now being processed and different collections of various sizes were donated or acquired otherwise by the museum. Financed by grants, a number of significant herbarium collections were purchased, too. On top of all this, and on a new impulse, field work across the country targeted the exploration of Hungarian flora and yielded freshly collected material. Here we give an account on the background, parameters and results of these accessions, as well as other developments in collection management and registration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In 2015, the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF), supported by an Erasmus+ grant, launched an online course on biodiversity and the impact of climate change on wildlife. The course, Biotalent was partly designed by staff members of the Hungarian Natural History Museum. The first module of the course conveyed general knowledge about the evolutionary background of biological diversity, while the second, optional module was centred around the diversity of medicinal plants / reptiles and amphibians. The course was participated by almost 500 students from 25 countries and the best performances were awarded with a field course in Crete, led by experts of the programme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
