The Tropic of Cancer at 23°26′22″ arcs across the open Pacific Ocean over nearly 13,000 km between the tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula and the island of Taiwan off mainland China's coast. Major storms that affect Taiwan's east coast and Gulf of California shores on Mexico's Baja California peninsula are tropical depressions called typhoons in Asia and hurricanes in the Americas. Taiwan is in the path of typhoons that form over the equatorial Pacific to strike east Asia annually. In 2019, Super Typhoon Lekima became the third costliest storm in east Asia, affecting not only Taiwan but also east China and the Ryukyu Islands. Late in the storm season in October 2023, Hurricane Otis became the strongest disturbance on record to strike western Mexico, with winds up to 265 km/h during a Category 5 event. Despite the enormous distance separating them, the tectonically active shores of Taiwan and the Baja California peninsula share foundational bedrock geology dominated by andesite and feature similar patterns of ongoing coastal uplift. This review covers a range of analogous aspects expressed by coastal marine geology, including fossil and modern coral reefs, fossil and modern rhodolith banks, thermal activity in the form of hot springs, and progradation of fossil and modern deltas that emerge from high-elevation drainages. The population density of the Baja California peninsula and the narrow coastal plain of eastern Taiwan is low, but people and infrastructure are affected by storms of increasing intensity under global warming. The two regions represent instructive case studies related by similar geology under comparable factors of oceanic and atmospheric circulation concentrated around the Tropic of Cancer. The two regions also show enormous potential in the development of national parks and geoparks dedicated to the promotion of geoheritage for the benefit of residents and visitors alike. The use of the HVSR (Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio) method on single-station microtremor measurements is well documented in small alluvial plains for bedrock mapping. In large sedimentary basins, like the Po Plain, its application is still debated. To shed some light on this issue, we investigated two seismogenic structures buried below the Po Plain Quaternary deposits: the Mirandola and Casaglia anticlines. We acquired and analysed a dense distribution of HVSR data covering the two areas and mapped the frequency and amplitude values of the observed resonance peaks. The top of both anticlines is highlighted by high amplitude peaks picturing E-W elongated sectors with high-impedance contrast, where Quaternary deposits are reduced in thickness to about 60–130 m and directly overlay the Pliocene (Mirandola) and Miocene (Casaglia) marine units. In Mirandola, the high-amplitude peaks also correspond to higher resonance frequencies, while in Casaglia, the distribution of resonance frequencies is relatively uniform suggesting a flatter crestal region and the lateral continuity of the resonance surface. The combination of peak frequency and amplitude information on a dense grid of measurement points is thus confirmed to be useful for identifying and mapping buried geological structures such as structural highs. This study focuses on developing a relation between fundamental frequency (fo) and the depth of sediments above the bedrock. The fundamental frequency of the site ranges from 1.25 to 27.19 Hz, whereas the depth of sediments above the bedrock varies from 2 to 145 m. The eastern Shimla region has a fundamental frequency variation from 3.6 to 5.5 Hz, whereas the western and central parts have a fundamental frequency variation from 1.24 to 5.5 Hz and high frequency (>20 Hz) at isolated locations. The seismic data has also been recorded in active mode using MSOR (multichannel simulation with one receiver) to derive the dispersion curve, enabling the derivation of a 1-D, shear wave velocity (Vs) model using a joint fit modelling procedure. The 1-D profile shows variation in Vs from 180 m/s at the top to 760 m/s at bedrock. As per the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) classification, the sites show that almost 40% of the city area fall under stiff soil and 60% fall under very stiff soil categories. Since most of the study region is covered with forest and sloping terrain, an empirical relationship (H = 154.36fo–1.451; R2 = 0.91) has been established for assessing the thickness of unconsolidated sediments. Furthermore, the thickness of sediments is determined by forward modelling by keeping the constant velocity at bedrock (Vb) 800 m/s. Additionally, the spatial map for sediment thickness is generated using the interpolation approach in combination with the forward modelling and regression analysis techniques. On February 17 2023, a landslide occurred on a highway slope along the Xiaolangdi Reservoir of the Yellow River, involving approximately 1,200 m3. This event directly resulted in road interruption and had profound social repercussions. This paper researches the landslide using a combination of field investigation, remote sensing imagery, laboratory tests, and numerical simulation. It traces the evolution of landslide occurrences influenced by human engineering activities and investigates the mechanisms by considering climatic factors, water levels fluctuations, and stress changes. The results indicate that: (1) fluctuations in water levels can reduce the stability coefficient of ancient landslides, albeit without directly triggering them. Moreover, alterations in soil stress induced by artificial excavation changes the distribution of the slope plastic zone, consequently altering potential sliding zones. (2) rainfall and temperature emerge as primary factors influencing the occurrence of accumulation landslides, it is particularly susceptible with the transition between winter and spring. (3) freeze-thaw action exerts significant pressure on sandstone bedding, which causes notable expansion deformation. Radio‐echo sounding (RES) shows large‐scale englacial stratigraphic folds are ubiquitous in Greenland's ice sheet. However, there is no consensus yet on how these folds form. Here, we use the full‐Stokes code Underworld2 to simulate ice movements in three‐dimensional convergent flow, mainly considering ice anisotropy due to a crystallographic preferred orientation, vertical viscosity and density gradients in ice layers, and bedrock topography. Our simulated folds show complex patterns and are classified into: large‐scale folds (>100 m amplitude), small‐scale folds (<<100 m) and basal‐shear folds. The amplitudes of large‐scale folds tend to be at their maximum in the middle of the ice column or just below, in accordance with observations in RES data. We conclude that ice anisotropy amplifies the perturbations in ice layers (mainly due to bedrock topography) into large‐scale folds during flow. Density differences between the warm deep ice and cold ice above may enhance fold amplification. Plain Language Summary: Polar ice sheets are composed of compacted former snow layers deposited at the ice surface. If not distorted or deformed, these layers are flat or adapt to the underlying bedrock topography. However, vertical radar scans of Greenland's ice sheet show large‐scale folds of up to hundreds of meters in height. To investigate how these large‐scale folds form, we set up a three‐dimensional numerical ice‐sheet model and simulate fold growth. Our modeling emphasizes the distinctive physical properties of ice required for fold formation, notably its anisotropy (the direction dependency of the flow strength) and power‐law rheology (when ice becomes softer with increasing strain rate). These findings help to better explain ice flow dynamics. Bedrock geology is crucial in structuring alpine plant communities. Old studies mainly focused on the compositional differences between alpine plant communities on carbonate rocks and crystalline rocks, i.e., calcareous vs. siliceous vegetation. Increasing attention is being paid to bedrock types other than calcareous or siliceous ones, viz. those which have intermediate geochemical characteristics between pure calcareous and pure siliceous ones. Among these types of 'intermediate' bedrocks, calc-schists and serpentines are generally characterized by vegetation comprised of a mixture of basiphilous and acidophilous species. We selected several sites in alpine grasslands in the Western Italian Alps, on calc-schist and serpentine bedrocks, located at 2500 ± 100 m above sea level. X-ray fluorescence quantification of major and trace elements, combined with stereomicroscopic examination of bedrock samples with a petrographic approach, revealed a much broader range of bedrock types than recognized by inspection of geological maps. The vegetation investigated in our study was mostly composed of a set of species found more or less frequently in alpine silicicolous or calcicolous plant communities of the Alps and other European mountains. The carbonate content in the bedrock was one of the main drivers of variation in grassland vegetation, not necessarily related to soil pH. The Sjuøyane archipelago is the northernmost land area of Svalbard; thus, it provides a window to study the terrestrial glacial history and dynamics of the Svalbard–Barents Sea Ice Sheet and complement marine geological studies in the region. To reconstruct the glacial history of Sjuøyane, we describe coastal sedimentary sections in Quaternary sediments and constrain their chronology by radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence ages. Erratic boulders and bedrock are sampled for 10Be cosmogenic exposure dating, aiming to determine the deglaciation age and exposure history. Holocene environments are studied based on lake sediments and emerging vegetation from retreating snow patches. The sedimentary sections largely consist of shallow (glacio‐)marine and/or littoral sediments deposited during high relative sea levels. The radiocarbon and luminescence ages suggest they formed during a Middle Weichselian interstadial and after the Late Weichselian glaciation. A wave‐washed bedrock erosional notch and rounded boulders at 36±1 m a.h.t. most likely formed during this interstadial. Most of the cosmogenic 10Be ages are older than the last deglaciation, likely indicating a complex exposure history. One boulder sample suggests that the lowlands were deglaciated 14.7±1.82 ka ago, and two boulder samples with ages of 18.94±3.26 and 22.89±4.05 ka suggest that the highlands were possibly ice‐free at this time. The lake sediments from Isvatnet, Phippsøya, consist of glaciolacustrine silt and clay overlain by gyttja. The gyttja has accumulated at least since 7.0 cal. ka BP. Two radiocarbon ages from emerging vegetation suggest Neoglacial cooling since 3.8 cal. ka BP. A patchy glacial drift at the surface of Sjuøyane and well‐preserved pre‐Late Weichselian sediments suggest that the Late Weichselian glaciation was non‐erosive and/or cold‐based at this part of the north margin of the Svalbard–Barents Sea Ice Sheet. SUMMARY: The Pohang Basin sustained the most extensive seismic damage in the history of instrumental recording in Korea due to the 2017 Mw 5.5 earthquake. The pattern of damage shows marked differences from a radial distribution, suggesting important contributions by local site effects. Our understanding of these site effects and their role in generating seismic damage within the study area remains incomplete, which indicates the need for a thorough exploration of subsurface information, including the thickness of soil to bedrock and basin geometry, in the Pohang Basin. We measured the depth to bedrock in the Pohang Basin using dense ambient noise measurements conducted at 698 sites. We propose a model of basin geometry based on depths and dominant frequencies derived from the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) of microtremor at 698 sites. Most microseismic measurements exhibit one or more clear HVSR peak(s), implying one or more strong impedance contrast(s), which are presumed to represent the interface between the basement and overlying basin-fill sediments at each measurement site. The ambient seismic noise induces resonance at frequencies as low as 0.32 Hz. The relationship between resonance frequency and bedrock depth was derived using data from 27 boreholes to convert the dominant frequencies measured at stations adjacent to the boreholes into corresponding depths to the strong impedance contrast. The relationship was then applied to the dominant frequencies to estimate the depth to bedrock over the whole study area. Maps of resonance frequency and the corresponding depth to bedrock for the study area show that the greatest depths to bedrock are in the coastal area. The maps also reveal lower fundamental frequencies in the area west of the Gokgang Fault. The results indicate a more complex basin structure than previously proposed based on a limited number of direct borehole observations and surface geology. The maps and associated profiles across different parts of the study area show pronounced changes in bedrock depth near inferred blind faults proposed in previous studies, suggesting that maps of bedrock depth based on the HVSR method can be used to infer previously unknown features, including concealed or blind faults that are not observed at the surface. New petrological, geochemical, and P–T modelling results from igneous samples clarify how carbonatite‐lamprophyre magmatism, fluorite and rare earth element (REE) enrichment are petrogenetically related in southern Illinois. P–T modelling reveals that igneous rocks derive from a deep mantle carbonated source, that is consistent with trace element signatures for a fluorine‐rich transition zone origin. Major element systematics suggests liquid‐immiscibility with lamprophyric melts as the origin for Ca‐carbonatites. Heavy REE (HREE) enrichments in Hicks Dome breccias likely formed through preferential partitioning and transport of HREE by brine‐melts, exsolved from a deep carbonatite body. Brine‐melts redistributed HREEs throughout the system along brecciated pathways where they reprecipitated as HREE‐rich phosphate/fluorcarbonate minerals (e.g. xenotime, florencite, synchesite) in host bedrock. The diversity of igneous rocks in southern Illinois highlights the area as an excellent natural laboratory to study carbonated melt petrogenesis and evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tropical glaciers have retreated over recent decades, but whether the magnitude of this retreat exceeds the bounds of Holocene fluctuations is unclear. We measured cosmogenic beryllium-10 and carbon-14 concentrations in recently exposed bedrock at the margin of four glaciers spanning the tropical Andes to reconstruct their past extents relative to today. Nuclide concentrations are near zero in almost all samples, suggesting that these locations were never exposed during the Holocene. Our data imply that many glaciers in the tropics are probably now smaller than they have been in at least 11,700 years, making the tropics the first large region where this milestone has been documented. Slope failure rates may be exacerbated by increased precipitation patterns associated with climate change. Such events are extremely disruptive for local communities affected. Rapid engineering remediation solutions generally require immediate site characterization, including information on depth to intact bedrock and groundwater conditions – often on dangerous or still‐failing slopes. Horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio is a low‐impact technique capable of rapidly providing key information on the subsurface. Here we develop a robust workflow for constrained minimization of horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio data and develop constrained horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio profiling methodologies. We present results from a number of landslide sites in eastern Australia and demonstrate the utility of horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio in delineating both fractured‐rock aquifers at high‐risk sites and colluvium–bedrock contact on active landslide sites, where traditional seismic methods were not practical. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread groundwater contaminants and are present in over 7000 drinking water wells near a North Carolina (NC) PFAS plant (Chemours). To understand options available to affected residents, we used new and previously existing water quality data to investigate deeper aquifers as alternate drinking water supplies and compared the regulatory responses near Chemours and three other PFAS production facilities with nearby contaminated wells. Data from >100 wells show that GenX concentrations decrease with increasing depth through the four aquifers in the study area: surficial, Black Creek, Upper Cape Fear, and bedrock. This illustrates the extent of vertical PFAS penetration through the aquifer sequence following roughly 40 years of atmospheric emissions. Detailed data on 143 water quality parameters in nine deep wells (two Upper Cape Fear, seven bedrock) revealed only eight exceedances of drinking water standards (one each for arsenic, perfluorooctanoic acid [PFOA], iron, chloride, and gross alpha, and three for manganese) and nine exceedances of health advisories (all for sodium). Regulatory responses to PFAS contamination of wells in four states included mention of deeper wells as an alternate water source only for nonresidential users in NC and residential users in Vermont. The bedrock aquifer is currently used by some residents and may be a viable alternative to shallower groundwater, though arsenic treatment may be beneficial at some deep wells and long‐term sustainability of the aquifer should be evaluated. Reasonable retention of safe coal and rock pillars is significant for safe mining and liberating coal resources under thick loose aquifers. The 18,041 working face of Chengcun Mine is taken as the research background. The elastic foundation model of the rock-clay synergistic aquiclude was creatively constructed, and the structural instability criterion was derived. The dynamic evolution law of thin bedrock failure and the vertical settlement law of clay layer are studied by numerical simulation test. A similar material simulation test is used to simulate the development law of water flowing fractured zone and the evolution law of vertical displacement of rock strata under the condition of fluid–solid coupling and to verify the stability of rock-clay synergistic water-resisting structure. The research shows that: (1) The maximum tensile stress in the middle of the long side of the rock stratum at the top of the bedrock is 0.652 MPa, less than its tensile strength threshold. (2) The clay and rock layers at the top of the bedrock have a synergistic settlement. The vertical settlement distribution transitions from a 'concentric circle' to a 'concentric ellipse'. The maximum deformation value in the central area is 0.5 m. (3) The development of water-conducting fractures under the thick loose layer and thin bedrock presents a 'double peak and one valley' shape, with a maximum height of 45.2 m. The onset of glaciation in the late Cenozoic caused rapid bedrock erosion above the snowline; however, whether the influx of eroded sediment is recorded in continental weathering and basin accumulation rates is an ongoing debate. We propose that the transport of glacially eroded bedrock through the fluvial system damps the signal of rapid headwater erosion and results in steady basin‐integrated sediment flux. Using a numerical model with integrated glacial and fluvial erosion, we find that headwater bedrock erosion rates increase rapidly at the onset of glaciation and continue to fluctuate with climatic oscillation. However, bedrock erosion rates decrease in the downstream fluvial system because larger grain sizes from glaciers result in an increase in sediment cover effect. When erosion and sediment flux rates are averaged, long‐term sediment flux is similar to nonglacial flux values, while localized bedrock erosion rates in the glaciated landscape are elevated 2–4 times compared to nonglacial values. Our simulated values are consistent with field measurements of headwater bedrock erosion, and the pattern of sediment flux and fluvial erosion matches paraglacial theory and terrace aggradation records. Thus, we emphasize that the bedload produced from glacial erosion provides a missing link to reconcile late Cenozoic erosion records. However, at the landscape‐scale, there is little to no change in erosion rates across the start of glaciation. In order to connect across these scales, we use a computer model to calculate erosion rates and sediment transfer rates. We find that the increase in sediment size from glaciation will lower erosion rates in rivers. Larger sediment sits on the riverbed and protects the underlying rock from erosion. Despite rapid erosion by glaciers upstream of the river, the slower erosion rates in the river result in a constant rate of sediment transferred out. Therefore, sediment transfer from glacier to river systems is an important process for understanding erosion across landscape scales. Valley width is largely controlled by lithology and upstream drainage area, but little work has focused on identifying the processes through which valleys widen. Bedrock valleys widen by first laterally eroding bedrock valley walls, followed by the collapse of overlying bedrock material that must then be transported away from the valley wall before the valley can continue widening. We hypothesize that talus piles that cannot be transported by the river protect the valley wall and slow valley widening, while talus piles that are rapidly transported allow for uninterrupted valley widening. We used field measurements from 40 locations in both wide and narrow valleys along the Buffalo River, AR to test this hypothesis. Our data show that wide valleys tend to have fewer talus piles and smaller talus grain sizes, whereas talus in narrow valleys is larger in size and more continuous along valley walls. We calculated potential talus block entrainment at each site location and found that talus blocks in wide valleys are potentially entrained and moved away from valley walls during moderate and large flood events, whereas talus blocks in narrow valleys are very rarely moved. Our results show that the potential transport of talus piles protecting bedrock valley walls from widening is controlled by the block size of collapsed bedrock wall material relative to stream competency. Our results also suggest that persistence versus mobility of collapsed talus piles is an important process in the development of wide bedrock valleys. Plain Language Summary: The width of a river valley largely depends on the rock type of the valley walls and the size of the upstream watershed, but we know very little about how a wide bedrock valley is formed. A river widens a bedrock valley by first undercutting the valley wall, causing the overlying material to collapse into the valley bottom. Then, the river must transport the collapsed material away from the valley wall so that the widening can continue. We use field data to test a conceptual model that links the width of bedrock valleys with how easily rivers can transport collapsed wall material. We measured the size of talus blocks and river channel geometry at 40 locations along the wide and narrow valleys of the Buffalo National River in northwest Arkansas. Next, we calculated whether moderate to very large floods can transport talus blocks away from valley walls. We found that in wide valleys the river can sometimes transport talus, while in narrow valleys, no talus blocks could be transported even in the 1000‐year flood. Our results suggest that the widening of bedrock valleys could be stalled by large, immobile blocks of talus that shield valley walls from undercutting and eventual widening. The study of alluvial terraces helps in reconstructing the past geometries of rivers and makes it possible to assess the rate and pattern of fluvial incision and bedrock uplift. The fluctuations of river base levels are particularly variable and complex during the Late Quaternary in the lower course of rivers due to the interplay of responses to sea‐level fluctuations, tectonics and glacio‐isostasy. In this paper, the geometry and chronology of Manoir Brésil, an outcrop of alluvial terraces of the Lower Seine River, northern France, are investigated through a multidisciplinary study. Fluvial incision during MIS 8 in the Lower Seine in relation to sea‐level drop is recorded by an erosional surface cut into the chalk bedrock. This surface is covered by MIS 7 tidal deposits and then by younger, mostly periglacial colluvium (head). Manoir Brésil is therefore considered to be a chronological equivalent of the nearby, well‐studied Tourville‐la‐Rivière outcrop. The deposits are affected by post‐MIS 7 cryoturbation processes. Based on the local elevation of MIS 7 tidal deposits and erosional surfaces at Manoir Brésil, a minimum bedrock uplift rate of 25–40 m/Ma and an erosion rate of 125 m/Ma during glacial periods can be proposed. A regional correlation of the MIS 8 erosional surface is increasingly deformed by uplift towards the North, making it difficult to correlate the fluvial deposits along the Seine without precise chronological control. We interpret this regional tilt as the result of isostasy rebound after glaciations, consistent with the distribution of the elevations of MIS 5e and MIS 7 marine deposits along the English Channel. In the steep terrain of southwestern China, there are numerous complex strata characterized by thin overburden layers and well-behaved underlying bedrock, yet excavation poses significant challenges. This situation is unfavorable for the construction of transmission towers' foundations. To address this issue, inclined anchor short-pile foundations have been proposed as foundations for transmission towers. These foundations not only reduce the depth and construction difficulty of excavation but also make full use of the load-bearing capacity of the bedrock. To investigate the influence of the anchor rods' layout on the uplift resistance characteristics of inclined anchor short-pile foundations, numerical models were established using FLAC3D. The effects of the anchor rods' position and the length of the free segment on the uplift resistance characteristics of inclined anchor short-pile foundations were explored. The results indicated that variations in the anchor rods' position and the length of the free segment had minimal impact on the uplift resistance characteristics of inclined anchor short-pile foundations. The pile head displacements of short piles with different anchor rod positions were similar under both loading conditions. Under pure uplift loads, the maximum displacement before failure was approximately 13 mm, while under combined uplift and horizontal loads, the maximum displacement before failure was around 15 mm. Placing the anchor rod too low increased the difficulty of construction, while positioning it too high resulted in a shorter embedment length of the anchor rod in the pile's body, leading to potential failure at the pile–anchor node. Therefore, it is recommended to position the anchor rod near the center of the short pile's body. As the length of the free segment of the anchor rod decreased, there was a slight reduction in the displacement under the same uplift loading conditions, with an overall difference of less than 5%. However, if full-length anchoring was adopted, the anchor rod was prone to tensile shear failure. Compared with short-pile foundations of the same size, inclined anchor short-pile foundations demonstrated enhanced ultimate bearing capacity under uplift and combined uplift and horizontal loading. The improvement was more significant when horizontal loads were present. Under horizontal loading, the ultimate uplift bearing capacity of inclined anchor short-pile foundations decreased by only 14%, whereas that of single-pile foundations decreased by 24%. The Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover imaged diagenetic textural features in four separate sedimentary units in its exploration of the 25‐m‐thick Shenandoah formation at Jezero Crater, Mars, that we interpreted as probable concretions. These concretions were most abundant in the Hogwallow Flats member of the Shenandoah formation and were restricted to the light‐toned, platy, sulfur‐cemented bedrock at outcrop surfaces, whereas the finely laminated, darker toned, mottled and deformed strata lack concretions. The concretions also had a wide range of morphologies including concentric, oblate, urn, and spheroidal shaped forms that were not clustered, and ranged in size from ∼1 to 16 mm with a median of 2.65 mm. The elemental composition of the concretions compared to the bedrock had greater abundance of magnesium and calcium salts, silicates, and possibly hematite. We compared these Jezero Crater concretions to the geochemistry of concretions from previously published studies and from two new terrestrial analog sites (Gallup Formation, New Mexico and Torrey Pines, California). In addition, we measured organic carbon content of three terrestrial sedimentary analogs of increasing age that contain concretions (Torrey Pines (Pleistocene), Gallup Formation (∼89 Ma), and Moodies Group (∼3.2 Ga)). All measured concretions contained significant concentrations of organic carbon with the maximum organic carbon content (∼2 wt. % Total organic carbon) found in the Moodies Group concretions. Organic carbon abundances in terrestrial concretions was controlled more by the formation mechanism and relative timing of concretion development rather than deposit age. These findings suggested that concretions at Jezero Crater reflect local sites of enhanced biosignature preservation potential. As urbanization progresses and city populations grow, river-crossing tunnels assume a crucial role in transportation networks, with the maximum scour depth constituting a critical parameter influencing tunnel safety. Using Line 6 of the Nanning Metro in Guangxi, China as a case study, a two-dimensional hydrosediment mathematical model was employed to investigate variations in maximum bedrock scouring. This study introduces the concept of critical frequency floods and compares it with urban flood control standards to determine the appropriate flood frequency for calculating maximum bedrock scour depth. The impact of bed sediment particle size on maximum scour depth is quantified, revealing a decrease in scour depth of 0.3 to 0.6 m for every 1 mm increase in particle size. The relationship between bed sedimentation and the Froude number demonstrates an upward-opening parabolic symmetry: lower Froude numbers correspond to relatively stable beds, while higher numbers correlate with an increased amplitude of bed erosion or deposition. The curve's nadir identifies the critical threshold of the Froude number, facilitating calculation of the channel's critical water depth. In practical engineering applications, a bed under conditions of critical water depth tends to be more stable, thereby favoring the selection of sites for river-crossing tunnels. Across diverse biomes and climate types, plants use water stored in bedrock to sustain plant transpiration. Bedrock water storage (Sbedrock), in addition to soil moisture, thus plays an important role in water cycling and should be accounted for in the context of surface energy balances and streamflow generation. Yet, the extent to which bedrock water storage impacts hydrologic partitioning and influences latent heat fluxes has yet to be quantified at large scales. This is particularly important in Mediterranean climates, where the majority of precipitation is offset from energy delivery and plants must rely on water retained from the wet season to support summer growth. Here we present a simple and modified water balance approach to quantify the role of Sbedrock on controlling hydrologic and energy partitioning. Specifically, we tracked evapotranspiration in excess of precipitation and mapped soil water storage capacity (Ssoil, mm) across the western US in the context of Budyko's water partitioning framework. Our findings indicate that Sbedrock is necessary to sustain plant transpiration across forests in the Sierra Nevada—some of the most productive forests on Earth—as early as April every year, which is counter to the current conventional thought that bedrock is exclusively used late in the dry season under extremely dry conditions. We found that the proportion of water that returns to the atmosphere would decrease dramatically without access to Sbedrock. When converted to latent heat energy, the median monthly flux associated with evapotranspiration of Sbedrock can exceed 100 W/m2 during the dry season. The battering of bedrock by bedload collisions is the primary mechanism by which bedrock rivers erode and landscapes evolve. The energy imparted via impacts acts to detach bedrock via the growth and intersection of surface fractures. We present impact experiments designed to test the influence of particle impact energy on bedrock erosion rates. We found that erosional efficiency increased with increasing impact energy. Notably, these increases in efficiency are not captured by a widely‐used mechanistic bedrock erosion model. Observed increases in erosional efficiency were linked with enhanced elastic energy dissipation captured by differences in the coefficient of restitution. We suggest that this increase in energy dissipation is indicative of enhanced crack extension for high velocity impacts. Our experiments indicate a clear energy‐dependence for bedrock detachment processes that is not yet captured by bedrock incision models but may be integrated into long‐term erosion rates and landscape evolution. We hypothesize that for higher energy impacts, a larger fraction of the incoming energy is used to crack the bedrock, more easily eroding material. We suggest that this effect may be important in determining the influence of extreme events on bedrock erosion over long timescales. Abstract\nHIGHLIGHTSThe fracture connectivity in enhanced geothermal systems plays a vital role in the process of heat extraction. In this paper, a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model with discrete fractures is developed to investigate the influence of fracture connectivity on the heat extraction performance of a geothermal doublet system. The proposed model adopts the assumptions of a one-dimensional fracture element and thin elastic layer. The influences of spacing or connectivity of two discrete fractures on heat extraction efficiency are investigated under varying thermal conductivity and permeability ratios. The evolutions of fracture aperture, production temperature, and heat extraction rate are analyzed. The simulations indicate that the key factors influencing thermal recovery, listed in order of decreasing impact, are the permeability ratio, fracture connectivity, and bedrock thermal conductivity. When the permeability ratio exceeds 10−6, thermal convection becomes the dominant factor, thereby diminishing the impact of fracture connectivity. In contrast, when the bedrock thermal conductivity is greater than 3 W/(m·K), thermal conduction takes precedence, and the efficiency of geothermal heat extraction is enhanced by the preferential flow paths resulting from fracture connectivity. Acid deposition is widespread in Japan, but acidification of stream water is rare in forest ecosystems. Bedrock‐derived cations, including those released into the soil by weathering of bedrock minerals, generally act to neutralize acid deposition and flow out into streams. Volcanic ash, which is widespread in Japan, may also release cations and neutralize acids, but the contribution of volcanic‐ash‐derived cations is currently poorly explored. To assess the importance of volcanic ash as a source of base cations, we examined strontium in two catchments underlain by chert bedrock at Mount Amamaki, Japan. Additionally, we obtained comparative data from two sandstone‐bedrock catchments in the same area. We measured 87Sr/86Sr ratios in samples of stream water, bulk precipitation, riverbed rock, and soil from the catchments. We used the 87Sr/86Sr data to analyze the relative contributions of atmospheric deposition, bedrock, and volcanic ash in soil as sources of Sr in the stream waters. We estimated volcanic ash in soil to contribute between 46% and 78% of stream‐water Sr for one chert‐bedrock catchment, and between 0% and 52% for the other. We conclude that volcanic ash in soil is an important source of Sr in stream water. Thus, volcanic ash can act as a source of base cations and hence contribute to the acid‐neutralizing capacity of soil in forest ecosystems in Japan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Information on the aquifer transmissivity and basement structure of Igarra, southwestern Nigeria, is scarce. Thus, this study aimed to apply electrical resistivity sounding and drilled borehole information to determine the underlying bedrock structure (basement structure) and the aquifer transmissivity of Igarra. Twenty vertical electrical soundings (VES) were carried out along 4 established E-W traverses intending to intercept the fracture systems. The resistivity data acquired were curved matched, and iterated using Schlumberger O' Neil software to obtain layer parameters. The layer parameters were evaluated to obtain the Dar-`Zarrouk parameters, which were used to determine the aquifer transmissivity. The resistivity-sounding result revealed four to six geoelectric layers that comprised topsoil, lateritic soil, weathered basement, fractured basement, partially fractured basement and fresh basement. The VES result revealed an undulating basement, with depths varying from 20.1 m to 53.8 m, suggesting evidence of fracturing and faulting within the basement. Correlation of the VES data and borehole log revealed that the weathered and the fractured basement constitute the aquifers, found between 2.4 - 53.8 m depths, and aquifer thickness ranged from 0.7 - 44.3 m. Analysis of the VES result showed an average computed transmissivity value of 18.48 m2 /day. These values indicate that the basement is undulating with adequate groundwater-yielding materials (aquifer), capable of promoting adequate recharge potentials from precipitation. The horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) methodology is used here to characterize pumice soils and to image the three-dimensional surface geometry of Guadalajara, Mexico. Similar to other Latin American cities, Guadalajara is exposed to high seismic risk, with the particularity of being the largest urban settlement in Latin America built on pumice soils. Methodology has not yet been tested to characterize subsoil depths in pumice sands. Due to the questionable use of traditional geotechnical tests for the analysis of pumice soils, HVSR provides an alternative for its characterization without altering its fragile and porous structure. In this work, resonance frequency (F0) and peak amplitude (A0) are used to constrain the depth of the major impedance contrast that represents the interface between bedrock and pumice soil. Results were compared with borehole depths and other available geotechnical and geophysical data and show good agreement. One of the profiles estimated on the riverbanks that cross the city, reveals different subsoil thickness that could have an impact on different site responses on riverine areas to an eventual earthquake. Aim: Climate is widely understood to determine elevational patterns of soil microbial communities, whereas the effects of parental material are uncertain. Changes in the composition of parental materials along elevational transects could also affect soil microbial communities by influencing soil pH and nutrient availability. Here, we aim to illustrate the combined effects of climate and parental material on the biomass and composition of soil microbial communities along an elevational transect. Location: A subtropical forest on a karst mountain (Mt. Jinfo), China. Taxon: Bacteria and Fungi. Methods: We use phospholipid fatty acid analysis (PLFA) and DNA amplicon high‐throughput sequencing to determine biomass and diversity patterns of soil microbial communities along a subtropical elevational gradient with contrasting parental materials (limestone and clasolite). Results: We observed that the microbial communities were more diverse (α‐diversity) and productive (biomass) on limestone than on clasolite. Additionally, we found that parental material played a role in shaping the composition (β‐diversity) of soil microbial communities along the elevational gradient. The impact of climate on soil microbial communities was found to be significant, albeit relatively weak. Structural equation models provided evidence for both direct and indirect effects of climate and parental material on microbial biomass and α‐diversity along the elevational gradient. Notably, the changes in soil pH, influenced by both parental material and climate, were identified as a key factor driving these effects. Bedrock temperature contains effective information about changes in the crustal stress. A new method of detecting crustal stress change by bedrock temperature (DSCT) has been proposed. Understanding the stress-induced temperature response characteristics of loaded rocks is fundamental for applying DSCT. In this study, temperature observation experiments of different rocks and water-saturated sandstones subjected to tiered cyclic loading were conducted to investigate the temperature–stress relationship throughout the whole rock deformation and failure process. Through experiments, some valuable results are obtained: (i) temperature changes synchronously with stress and has a very strong linear correlation with it; (ii) the magnitude of temperature response to stress (TRS) is approximately 1 mK MPa−1, ranging from strong to weak are sandstone, marble, diorite and basalt, respectively. The differences in TRS of various rocks are determined by their major rock-forming minerals, textures and structures; (iii) the evolution of TRS experiences three stages: the TRS rises rapidly in the compression stage, slowly in the acoustic emission quiet period and a significant increase in TRS before rock failure is observed on marble, sandstone and basalt, consistent with the abnormal bedrock temperature rise preceding earthquakes; (iv) the TRS of water-saturated sandstones is higher compared to the dry ones, and the abnormal sharp increase in TRS before rock failure is also more significant in the former. The mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet is strongly influenced by the dynamics of its outlet glaciers. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to accurately and continuously monitor these glaciers, especially the variation in their frontal positions. A temporally comprehensive parameterization of glacier calving is essential for understanding dynamic changes and constraining ice sheet modeling. However, many current calving front records are limited in terms of temporal resolution as they rely on manual delineation, which is laborious and not appropriate considering the increasing amount of satellite imagery available. In this contribution, we address this problem by applying an automated method to extract calving fronts from optical satellite imagery. The core of this workflow builds on recent advances in the field of deep learning while taking full advantage of multispectral input information. The performance of the method is evaluated using three independent test datasets. For the three datasets, we calculate mean delineation errors of 61.2, 73.7, and 73.5 m, respectively. Eventually, we apply the technique to Landsat-8 imagery. We generate 9243 calving front positions across 23 outlet glaciers in Greenland for the period 2013–2021. Resulting time series not only resolve long-term and seasonal signals but also resolve subseasonal patterns. We discuss the implications for glaciological studies and present a first application for analyzing the effect of bedrock topography on calving front variations. Our method and derived results represent an important step towards the development of intelligent processing strategies for glacier monitoring, opening up new possibilities for studying and modeling the dynamics of Greenland's outlet glaciers. Nanhong agate, esteemed for its vivid color and natural shine, is experiencing a scarcity in supply despite its high demand. The primary deposits of agate, typically found near the surface, have not been extensively explored due to the predominance of traditional manual excavation methods. This research examined the Nanhong agate deposits in the Zhaojue–Meigu region of Liangshan, China, employing the integration of geological and geophysical surveys. Field geological surveys allowed us to outline the general areas where agate is found. Following this, using magnetic surveys, vertical electrical sounding, and controlled-source audio magnetotellurics, agate deposits were located within the conglomerate layer of the second member of the Feixianguan Formation from the Lower Triassic period at depths of less than 100 m. Our results identify mineralized layers, Xuanwei Formation mudstone, and the underlying bedrock, thus supporting the creation of a mineral prediction map. In the formerly glaciated terrains in the northern hemisphere and countries such as Finland, till is the most common sediment covering the bedrock. Specifically, indicator or heavy mineral studies utilising till as a vector for mineral deposits undercover have been successful. The pyrite trace-element composition from in situ mineral analyses has been shown to be an effective discriminator between different mineral deposit types, and this has led to research using heavy mineral pyrite in till to identify potential mineral deposits in a given area. However, pyrite is easily oxidised in till beds, and thus, alternative methods should be considered. Goethite pseudomorphs are more commonly found in the till sediments as remnants after pyrite oxidation. This study evaluates trace element compositions of goethitised pyrite recovered in the till beds from central Lapland in northern Finland. Intra-grain trace-elemental variations gathered using laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) between the intact pyrite core and oxidised rim demonstrated complex dynamics and variations between different trace-element values. For example, Cu, V and Mn exhibited elevated trace-element values in the goethite rim compared to the pyrite core. However, elemental ratios such as Ni/As and Co/Ni remain stable between the pyrite core and oxidised rim. Therefore, these ratios have the potential to be used as a discriminating tool between the pyrite core and oxidised rim. In addition, nanoscale variabilities using focused ion beam (FIB) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilised to inspect possible nano inclusions within the studied heavy mineral grain. Clay mineral proxies have been widely used to reconstruct changes in provenance and the paleoclimate. However, high-altitude clay mineral indications and long-term and orbital variations have not been fully explored. Herein, we present an 800-ka clay-mineral record from a lacustrine sediment core (ZB13-C2) from the Zoige Basin on the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP). X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to identify the clay mineral assemblages and their micro-morphological characteristics of core ZB13-C2. The results revealed that the clay minerals in core ZB13-C2 are mainly illite, with small amounts of chlorite, kaolinite, and smectite (including irregular mixed-layers of illite-smectite (I/S) and chlorite-smectite (C/S)). The clay mineral assemblages and proxies exhibit three stages of change, which are mainly controlled by the Zoige watershed range under different climate conditions. The watershed was limited to the southeastern region with altitudes ranging from ∼3500 to ∼4200 meters above sea level (m a.s.l.), and glacial-interglacial hydraulic erosion controlled the input of bedrock debris during 800–621 ka BP. It expanded to higher altitudes (∼1200 to ∼4700 m a.s.l.) due to stronger seasonal freeze-thaw weathering without significant glacial-interglacial variations under a cooling and drying climate during 621–100 ka BP. Finally, it expanded to its highest altitudes of ∼4700 to ∼5200 m a.s.l. northwest of the watershed after 100 ka BP, and hydraulic erosion increased obviously under a warm climate of the interstadial MIS 3 on the TP. The watershed underwent two major expansions under different climatic conditions at ∼621 ka and 100 ka BP, with the wet/dry alternation became strong at ∼621 ka BP. These results reveal that long-term temperature changes and the wet/dry alternation at high altitudes controlled the watershed range and degree of the physical erosion, and that the indications of clay minerals should be carefully clarified before they are used as climate indicators, especially on the TP. When a seismic wave propagates through a bedrock cover discontinuity, mutations in seismic wave propagation characteristics occur owing to reflection and transmission. In this study, based on the medium model and motion equation, the medium of the bedrock and overburden layer slope were connected by boundary conditions, the variation law of the seismic wave reflection and transmission coefficients at the bedrock cover discontinuity were analyzed, and the attenuation characteristics of the energy of the bedrock and overburden layer slope were studied. It was concluded that the transmission coefficients of the P, SV, and SH waves decreased with increasing incident angle. Further, with increasing incident angle, the reflection coefficients of the P and SH waves first decreased and then increased, whereas that of the SV wave first increased and then decreased. When the incident angle was constant, the attenuation of the seismic wave energy by the bedrock cover interface was directly proportional to the attenuation ratio of the interface. The lower Frasnian (Upper Devonian) Maywood Formation records incision of valleys into lower Paleozoic bedrock in fluvial to estuarine settings in northern Wyoming and deposition in estuarine to marine environments in southern Montana (USA). A distinctive fossil assemblage of microconchids, plant compression fossils, fish fossils, and microspores represent fauna and flora that lived in, and adjacent to, salinity-stressed ecological niches in the upper reaches of the Maywood valleys. A similar fossil assemblage is recorded in older Devonian valley-fill deposits of the Lower Devonian Beartooth Butte Formation, indicating that valley incision and subsequent transgression, occurred repeatedly over a span of nearly 30 million years with organisms tracking the marine incursions into the valleys. The fossil charcoal in the Maywood Formation captures a record of fire in adjacent terrestrial ecosystems. The amount of dioxygen (O2) was thus above the fire window level (16% by volume) and might have been near modern levels in the earliest Late Devonian atmosphere. The nearshore deposits of the Maywood Formation are overlain by extensive shallow carbonate shelf strata of the Jefferson Formation, likely resulting from a global transgression in the earliest Frasnian. The unconformably overlying Madison Limestone is lower Carboniferous, except for a thin basal Upper Devonian unit with marine palynomorphs. The Madison regionally records eastward transgression and establishment of widespread marine deposition. It also contains two positive 813Ccarb excursions (up to ~7.5‰) that make up the mid-Tournaisian (= Kinder-hookian-Osagean boundary) carbon isotope excursion (TICE/KOBE). These isotope data provide a framework for regional and global correlation of northern Rocky Mountain strata and an archive of environmental and evolutionary change during the middle-late Paleozoic transition. Previous research on mixed bedrock‐alluvial anabranching rivers has documented how alluvial islands commonly grow under vegetation influences atop slowly eroding bedrock templates, but timescales of island dynamics remain poorly constrained. We focus on the Vaal River near Parys, South Africa, and combine field investigations, aerial image analyses and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to establish timescales of initiation, growth and erosion for nine bedrock‐cored, tree‐covered, alluvial islands. For each island, two OSL samples were collected in vertical succession from sand‐rich exposures up to 4 m in thickness to establish minimum ages for island initiation (~1802 to 243 years) and to estimate local vertical aggradation rates (~0.20 to 1.8 cm year−1). The diachronous lower ages and lack of systematic upstream‐downstream trend in island age support an interpretation of patchwork initiation, growth, and erosion of islands throughout the late Holocene. Following island initiation, vertical island aggradation occurs in association with establishment of reeds, shrubs and trees, but erosion of island margins or dissection by cross‐cutting channels also can occur. Observations during and after recent large floods (peak discharges >3000 m3 s−1) provide further insights into island dynamics, including the influence of exotic trees (e.g., Eucalyptus spp.) that have colonised many islands in the postcolonial era (last ~150 years). Our findings extend previous conceptual models by constraining timescales of island dynamics and providing new insights into island stability and longevity in mixed bedrock‐alluvial anabranching rivers. Improved communication of findings regarding island geomorphology, ecology and stability can benefit local community engagement, geo/eco‐tourism and education activities, and land use planning. Preferential flow (PF) processes are governed by subsurface soil structures at various scales. Still, model validation and mechanistic understanding of PF are very lacking. We hypothesize that PF at hillslope and larger scales cannot be described and quantified when neglecting small‐scaled spatially variable processes and simplifying the model dimensionality. The objective was to learn from comparing simulation results of multidimensional (1D, 2D, and 3D) and multiscale (pedon, catena, and catchment) modeling approaches with comprehensive datasets, and so as to evaluate PF simulations based on the Richards' equation (solved by the HYDRUS software). Results showed limited alignment between 1D simulations and soil moisture data, mainly affected by vertical changes in porosity, permeability, and precipitation features. 2D and 3D simulations outperformed 1D models. 3D simulations provided satisfactory description of PF dynamics at the pedon scale, considering accurate representations of soil and bedrock structures for three dimensions (vertical, horizontal, and surrounding area). In 2D simulations at the pedon scale, models incorporating dual‐porosity and anisotropy of soils yielded more accurate predictions of water dynamics than single‐porosity and isotropic models. Furthermore, the application of 2D simulation at the catena scale identify PF pathways owing to the enhanced representation of the hydraulic connectivity between different locations along the slope. The results confirmed the significance of multidimensional and multiscale modeling approaches for PF simulations in hillslope hydrology. Considering the complexity and parameterization of 2D and 3D "bottom‐up" physically based models in representing spatial variability within and between soil profiles and/or underlying bedrock geology, the results contribute to creating a modeling framework applicable to identify the PF processes and thus their implications in managing water resources. The continuous ice core record extends 800 000 years into the past, covering the period of 100 000-year glacial cycles but not the transition from 40 000-year glacial cycles (the mid-Pleistocene transition, 1.2–0.7 million years ago). A primary goal of the International Partnerships in Ice Core Sciences is therefore to retrieve a 1.5-million-year-old continuous ice core, increasing our understanding of this major change in the climate system and thus of fundamental climate forcings and feedbacks. However, complex glacial processes, limited bedrock data, and young basal ice in previous cores necessitate careful reconnaissance studies before extracting a full core. Ice borehole optical logging reflects the ice dust content and may be used to date ice quickly and inexpensively if a reference record is known. Here we explore the relationship between ice dust records and well-dated marine dust records from sediment cores in the southern Atlantic and Pacific oceans, which lie along paths of dust sources to Antarctica. We evaluate how representative these records are of Antarctic dust both through the existing ice core record and during the older target age range, suggesting that a newly published 1.5-million-year record from Site U1537 near South America is likely the most robust predictor of the Oldest Ice dust signal. We then assess procedures for rapid dating of potential Oldest Ice sites, noting that the ability to detect dating errors is an essential feature. We emphasize that ongoing efforts to identify, recover, date, and interpret an Oldest Ice core should use care to avoid unfounded assumptions about the 40 kyr world based on the 100 kyr world. Understanding the rates and mechanisms of erosion by subglacial quarrying is a major unsolved problem in geomorphology. Stress enhancement due to load concentration on bedrock ledges between cavities is hypothesized to drive the growth of fractures. Prior work assumed the formation of vertically oriented tensile fractures at the downstream margins of cavities as the controlling process, but did not account for the evolution of the stress field as fractures lengthen, and in particular the dominance of the shearing mode at fracture tips. We used 2D finite element analysis and J‐integral methods to analyze stress intensity factors and fracture growth potentials at the tips of preexisting fractures in loaded bedrock steps, taking into account normal and shear components and measured rock strengths. By examining different step heights, step riser angles, rock types, prior fracture locations and orientations, and extents of ice‐rock contact zones, we identified some situations favorable for fracture growth, especially in brittle rock types. Typically, however, the growth direction will not be vertically downward but angled up‐glacier away from the step riser, a situation unfavorable for quarrying. Moreover, in many situations, the normal stress across fracture planes will be compressive. Non‐vertical step risers buttress the bedrock and also suppress fracture growth. In contrast, reducing the sizes of ice‐rock contact zones not only increases the loading magnitude, as previously recognized, but also increases intensification of tensile stress at the tips of fractures located just up‐glacier. Thus, larger cavities, and hence, fast sliding and low effective pressures, favor quarrying more strongly than previously recognized. Plain Language Summary: Glaciers carve into landscapes, in particular helping to define the terrain of high mountain ranges and high‐latitude continents. A major way glaciers achieve this is subglacial quarrying; by sliding over their substrates, glaciers unevenly concentrate their weight on bedrock bumps and ledges, causing existing bedrock cracks to grow, ultimately dislodging chunks of rock which further scrape along downstream to cause further erosion. Scientists do not yet understand how enough fracturing occurs for quarrying to happen, or how rapidly. We used software to mathematically evaluate the extent to which the uneven pressures cause bedrock flaws to pull apart or slide apart in different situations under glaciers. Factors enhancing erosion include taller bedrock steps, vertical step faces, cracks and pressures positioned closer to step edges, and rock types susceptible to shattering. Our analysis corrected some problems in previous research but also failed to identify how rock fracturing under glaciers could be extensive enough to fully dislodge rocks, an issue we continue to investigate. Bedrock river incision drives the evolution of the Earth's landscape and is influenced by river hydraulic power. However, the relationship between plunging flows and the curvature of bedrock canyons is poorly understood, which encouraged us to explore how the bend's curvature and undulating beds affect plunging flows. A generalized physical model was built to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of plunging flows in a constant curvature flume with plain and undulating beds. Our experimental findings demonstrated that plunging flows were related to secondary circulation, topography, and width‐to‐depth ratios. Plunging flows occurred when secondary circulation reached its peak, and as secondary circulation vanished, the intensity of plunging flows decreased. The undulating bed topography in the bedrock bends suppressed secondary circulation and the development of plunging flows. Bed topography may be a dominant factor in plunging flows in bedrock bends. The potential erosion area in bedrock bends was related to the intensity of plunging flows, which caused velocity inversion to increase the shear stress near the bed. With higher discharges and undulating beds, the intensity of the transverse shear stress of the riverbed near the center was greater. The potential erosion area in bedrock bends was concentrated at the center of the cross‐section around the bend apex upstream. Our experimental results can improve incision models in terms of the distribution of shear stress and flow structure in bedrock bends. Nevertheless, hydrodynamic processes in bedrock bends have been overlooked: the existence of plunging flows has promoted bedrock bed erosion by causing high‐velocities to impinge toward the bed, driving sediment abrasion and wearing the bedrock. During the process of flow plunging, the velocity inversion increases the shear stress near the riverbed. Here, we investigate the phenomenon of flow plunging toward the riverbed in a bedrock canyon that bends with both plain and undulating beds. Secondary circulation was closely associated with the occurrence of plunging flows; when the strength of secondary circulation reached its maximum, plunging flows occurred. However, the topographic effect of the bedrock beds, which presented a U‐shaped profile in a transverse cross‐section, suppressed the development of plunging flows. The transverse shear stress on the riverbed increased with larger discharges and undulating beds. The potential erosion area in bedrock canyon bends was distributed at the center of the cross‐section, near the upstream part of the bend apex. Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are a crucial tool for watershed analysis, offering valuable insights into landscape‐scale hydrology. Traditional watershed delineations are derived by filling a DEM to force flow paths through topographic depressions, thus creating a continuous drainage network throughout the domain. However, this approach is challenged in landscapes with abundant real‐world depression storage, intermittently flowing stream channels, and internally drained lake basin (endorheic basin) such as the Canadian Shield (CS). The CS landscape is characterized by "fill‐and‐spill" surface water hydrology, with runoff flow paths controlled by bedrock sills and rocky cascades that overtop when water levels are high but cease flowing when water levels are low. To better represent these intermittent drainage networks, we apply a non‐traditional, less‐aggressive DEM filling model (Fill‐Spill‐Merge or FSM) to a continental‐scale DEM (MERIT) all of Canada. To ensure adequate filling of DEM noise while also preserving real‐world topographic depressions, we propose a climatic method to initialize a key FSM parameter ("runoff depth") that calibrates observed discharges from 1690 Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) river gauges with climate model P‐ET (precipitation minus evapotranspiration) data. Our application of FSM to all 1690 gauged watersheds identifies 916 significant topographical control points controlling >20% and/or 1000 km2 of their respective areas. The Geikie, Snare, Kazan, Tazin, and Seal rivers may be particularly affected, with impacted watershed areas ranging from 12% to 64%. Extending this approach to ungauged parts of the CS reveals an additional 635 significant topographical control points. Ensemble climate model projections suggest that around 10% of these control points are currently dry but will become active by 2100. This research explicitly determines how CS watersheds are affected by fill‐and‐spill hydrology, and demonstrates the importance of accurate terrain modelling for delineating surface water flow paths in depressional landscapes. Soil erosion, one of the most serious phenomena in watershed management, can be estimated based on various criteria. Land use change is one of the most important factors affecting the susceptibility of soil erosion. In this study, the effect of land use change on soil erosion risk in two plan periods (2005 and 2017) was investigated using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the forest planning units in the Doğancı Dam Watershed, located in Bursa, Türkiye. Eight criteria were evaluated including erosion-related slope, bedrock type, land use/land cover, precipitation, relative relief, aspect, drainage frequency, and density. According to the results, the most effective factor in soil erosion was slope (0.29), while bedrock type and land use/land cover ranked second with 0.19. It was found that full closure forests were characterized by high erosion resistance (0.3), while bare land was characterized as the most sensitive area to erosion (0.39). In terms of spatio-temporal changes in a 12-year period, the areas in the medium and high erosion risk decreased, while low and very low-risk areas increased. The ROC method showed a satisfactory accuracy of 72.8% and 80.2% for the 2005 and 2017 erosion risk maps, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rising energy demands, the depletion of fossil fuels, and their environmental impact necessitate a shift towards sustainable power generation. Concentrating solar power (CSP) offers a promising solution. This study examines a hybridization of a combined cycle power plant (CCPP) based on solar energy with fossil fuel and energy storage in rock layers to increase Saudi Arabia's electricity production from renewable energy. The fuel is used to keep the temperature at the inlet of the gas turbine at 1000 °C, ensuring the power produced by the Rankine cycle remains constant. During the summer, the sun is the main source of power generation, whereas in the winter, reliance on fuel increases significantly. The Brayton cycle operates for 10 h during peak solar radiation periods, storing exhaust heat in rock beds. For the remaining 14 h of the day, this stored heat is discharged to operate the Rankine steam cycle. Simulations and optimizations are performed, and the system is evaluated using a comprehensive 4E analysis (energy, exergy, exergoconomic, and environmental) alongside a sustainability assessment. A parametric evaluation examines the effect of key factors on system performance. The rock bed storage system compensates for solar intermittency, enabling power generation even without sunlight. The study reveals that the system generated 12.334 MW in June, achieving an energy efficiency of 37% and an exergy efficiency of 40.35%. The average electricity cost during this period was 0.0303 USD/kWh, and the carbon footprint was 0.108 kg CO2/kWh. In contrast, during January, the system produced 13.276 MW with an energy efficiency of 37.91% and an exergy efficiency of 44.16%. The average electricity cost in January was 0.045 USD/kWh, and the carbon footprint was 0.1 kg CO2/kWh. Interestingly, solar energy played a significant role: it contributed 81.42% of the heat in June, while in January, it accounted for 46.77%. In situ cosmogenic 14 C (in situ 14 C) in quartz provides a recently developed tool to date exposure of bedrock surfaces of up to ∼ 25 000 years. From outcrops located in east-central Sweden, we tested the accuracy of in situ 14 C dating against (i) a relative sea level (RSL) curve constructed from radiocarbon dating of organic material in isolation basins and (ii) the timing of local deglaciation constructed from a clay varve chronology complemented with traditional radiocarbon dating. Five samples of granitoid bedrock were taken along an elevation transect extending southwestwards from the coast of the Baltic Sea near Forsmark. Because these samples derive from bedrock outcrops positioned below the highest postglacial shoreline, they target the timing of progressive landscape emergence above sea level. In contrast, in situ 14 C concentrations in an additional five samples taken from granitoid outcrops above the highest postglacial shoreline, located 100 km west of Forsmark, should reflect local deglaciation ages. The 10 in situ 14 C measurements provide robust age constraints that, within uncertainties, compare favourably with the RSL curve and the local deglaciation chronology. These data demonstrate the utility of in situ 14 C to accurately date ice sheet deglaciation, and durations of postglacial exposure, in regions where cosmogenic 10 Be and 26 Al routinely return complex exposure results. A portion of the west of Mexico City is densely populated in an abrupt topography, whose volcano-sedimentary materials increase the likelihood of landslides. We exploited the geometry of a quadrangular geophones array to apply Seismic Refraction Tomography (SRT) and Ambient Noise Tomography (ANT) methods and explore the extent of landslide-prone materials. The results show low-velocity areas (Vs < 100 m/s, being Vs group velocities) associated with materials that have lost their resistance due to the increase in pore pressure and the places where eventually, more landslides will occur (120 < Vs < 200 m/s) if mitigation work is not carried out. The most stable zones correspond to materials with velocity values greater than 250 m/s that overlap a bedrock at an average depth of 8 m. Thus, when it is not advisable to perform active source experiments, ANT can provide practical results to determine the extension of the sliding materials.
