12. Bacampicillin in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis—a dose-range study.

Abstract

During the initial clinical evaluation of a new aminopenicillin, bacampicillin, 21 patients were treated for acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. The study was “single-blind” and comprised three dose-levels, which permitted a systematic study of dose-response relationships. Both the ampicillin levels in serum and sputum and the clinical outcome were dose-dependent. Sputum purulence and ampicillin levels were found to be a significant factor for predicting clinical outcome. With 400 to 800 mg bacampicillin t.i.d. mean ampicillin levels inhibitory for were maintained in sputum for at least 6 to 8 h and the clinical results were satisfactory, whereas this time was considerably shorter with the 200 mg t.i.d. dose, which also gave poorer clinical results. The ampicillin sputum to serum level ratio was 13% at I h and 20 % at 3 h after a dose. No sideeffects were observed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

18. Cytochemistry and sensitivity of a human amnion cell-line to Coxsackie A23 (Echo9) virus

Abstract

Summary: A description is given of the isolation of an amnion cell-line. The morphological and cytochemical changes of the 2nd and 4th transfers are compared. It is shown that the 4th transfer becomes insensitive to ECHO virus type 9. The growth pattern changes also, while the Sudan reaction, after having initially been markedly positive, becomes weakly positive. The alkaline phosphatase reaction, negative in the beginning, becomes positive in the 4th transfer. The amnion cells lose their specific characteristics during the adaptation.It is possible that we are dealing here with a general adaptation phenomenon.

Abstract

Serum levels of tetracycline after oral administration were studied by different methods. A generally used microbiological dilution method is of no value; there is agreement between an agar plate diffusion technique and a fluorimetric procedure. It seems that addition of chelating compounds has a good effect on intestinal resorption while the use of coated tablets gives less favourable results.
