Background: The compulsory hospitalization in psychiatric care is widely used by psychiatrists with the collaboration of judicial and administrative authorities, under certain specific conditions that meet the legislation in force established by the Algerian state. Method: In this article, we present a descriptive quantitative study on the practice of psychiatric hospitalizations, on a sample of a ward of hospitalization capacity of 30 patients with mental illnesses, during a period of one month of the year 2022, at the Sidi Chami psychiatric hospital in Oran, Algeria. Results: Among the 30 patients hospitalized for a period of one month in the year 2022 in a single ward of the psychiatric hospital of Sidi Chami in Oran, Algeria. There is a rate of 0% of voluntary hospitalization, against 53% of hospitalization at the request of the Wali and 24% of judicial hospitalization. Recommendation and conclusion: The results obtained in this study show that the practice of compulsory hospitalization in psychiatric care is more frequent than that of other types of hospitalizations. This situation makes it possible to question the causes of this practice and its relationship with the methods of application of the law in hospitalization in psychiatric care in Algeria.
