Conservation permits are hunting permits auctioned annually at banquets, fundraisers and other events sponsored by various conservation groups. What started in the early 1980s as a creative approach to raise needed funds for wildlife conservation has blossomed into a well-regulated program that raises millions of dollars each year. Those dollars are then invested back into wildlife conservation. This novel approach to funding conservation has allowed the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) to seize opportunities, grow the state's wildlife populations and improve wildlife management.

The statewide elk management plan provides overall guidance and direction for Utah’s elk management program. This plan briefly describes general information on elk natural history, management, habitat, and population status. This statewide elk management plan was revised by a 20 person advisory committee. The elk plan was approved by the Wildlife Board on December 1, 2022 and will be in effect for 10 years until December 2032. Two mid-plan reviews spaced 3-4 years apart will be scheduled with the Wildlife Board in the spring of 2026.
