Abstract

International audience; The inventories of marine species of La Reunion (South West Indian Ocean) are still incomplete for several phylum including the Echinodermata. The present knowledge for the five classes is reported here, in the habitats below (1) and above (2) 50 m depth. The overall diversity for (1) is 136 species and for (2), 48 species. On the whole, as in thebroader western Indian Ocean, the Holothuroidea and the Ophiuroidea are the dominant classes. Several new specieshave been described and many still need further research

Abstract

International audience; Previously only known from the western Mascarenes and Aldabra, Centropyge debelius (Pyle 1990) is recorded for the first time at Mayotte and Tromelin islands. These new records expand the geographical distribution of C. debelius in the south-western Indian Ocean, but also the depth range of the species, as the species was observed for the first time at depths shallower than 30 m. It emphasizes the crucial importance to improve the prospecting effort on little studied areas and the "twilight zone" of reef habitats, in order to access to a better understanding of biodiversity and ecological functionalities.; Extension de l'aire de distribution du poisson ange pygmée Centropyge debelius (Pyle, 1990) (Teleostei : Pomacanthidae) endémique du Sud-Ouest de l'océan Indien. Le poisson ange pygmée Centropyge debelius, précédemment connu uniquement des Mascareignes occidentales et du groupe d'Aldabra aux Seychelles, est signalé pour la première fois aux îles de Mayotte et de Tromelin, sud-ouest de l'Océan Indien. Ces nouveaux signalements élargissent la distribution géographique de l'espèce mais également sa gamme de profondeur puisque l'espèce est observée pour la première fois à des profondeurs inférieures à 30 m. Ces observations soulignent l'importance d'augmenter l'effort de prospection sur les zones peu étudiées et les habitats récifaux de la « zone crépusculaire » afin de mieux appréhender leur biodiversité et leur fonctionnalités écologiques.

Abstract

International audience; Monitoring of coral reefs has become a major tool for understanding how they are changing, and for managing them in a context of increasing degradation of coastal ecosystems. The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) has near-global coverage, but there are few remote sites free of direct human impact that can serve as reference sites. This study provides baseline data for the French Iles Eparses in the Mozambique Channel, Western Indian Ocean (WIO), whose coral reefs are little known owing to their limited accessibility, and have been free from fishing pressure for over 20 years. Surveys of coral reef health and fish community structure were undertaken at four of the islands (Europa, Bassas da India, Juan de Nova and Glorieuses) in 2011–2013. Monitoring was conducted using standardized GCRMN methods for benthos and fish communities, at the highest taxonomic level. Benthic cover showed a latitudinal gradient, with higher coral cover and conversely lower algae cover (60% and 14% respectively) in the south of the Mozambique Channel. This could be due to the geomorphology of the islands, the latitudinal temperature gradient, and/or the history of chronic stress and bleaching events during the last decades. Fish also showed a latitudinal gradient with higher diversity in the north, in a center of diversity for the western Indian Ocean already recognized for corals. An exceptional biomass fish was recorded (approximately 3500 kg/ha excluding sharks, compared to a maximum of 1400 kg/ha elsewhere in the WIO). The presence of large predators and sharks in all the islands as well as the absence of fleshy benthic algae were indicators of the good health of the reef systems. Nevertheless, these islands are beginning to experience illegal fishing, particularly in the north of the Mozambique Channel, demonstrating their vulnerability to exploitation and the need to protect them as reference sites for coral reef studies, including of climate change impacts, for the region and globally.

Abstract

International audience; The multidisciplinary programme BioReCIE (Biodiversity, Resources and Conservation of coral reefs at Eparses Is.) inventoried multiple marine animal groups in order to provide information on the coral reef health of the Iles Eparses. All five classes of echinoderms were observed by visual census, photographed and later identified. About 100 species are reported, including a few unidentified ones which require further studies. The Holothuroidea and Ophiuroidea are the most diverse. One new species, the asterinid Aquilonastra chantalae O'Loughlin and McKenzie (2013), was discovered in addition to several new records of echinoderms. The illegal fishery targeting holothurians, which are presently highly valuable resources in this zone, is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Juan de Nova is one of the scattered islands known as Iles Eparses in the Mozambique Channel (Western Indian Ocean). Historically, they have been isolated from many anthropogenic influences which makes them ideal areas to study biodiversity for comparison with areas that are heavily impacted by urbanization and fishing. The programme BioReCie (Biodiversity, Resources and Conservation of Eparses Islands) undertook inventories of several marine groups, including echinoderms, which had hitherto not been assessed in Juan de Nova. A multidisciplinary team surveyed the reef slopes of the island using SCUBA to a depth of 25 m as well as the reef flats at low tide, collecting specimens and taking photos for identification. Sixty echinoderm species were found, with 51 occurring on the reef flats and in the lagoon and 22 on the reef slopes, comprising 21 species of Holothuroidea, 16 Ophiuroidea, 10 Echinoidea, 7 Asteroidea, and 6 Crinoidea. Commercial species of Holothuroidea, some of which are classified as endangered in the IUCN red list, i.e. Thelenota ananas and Holothuria nobilis, were present on the reef flats, reef slopes and in the lagoon of the island, indicating the value that protection has on biodiversity.

Abstract

Les crustacés décapodes et stomatopodes sont inventoriés pour la première fois de l’île de Juan de Nova. Au total 111 espèces sont reconnues, 69 crabes, 28 anomoures, 10 crevettes, 3 stomatopodes et 1 langouste. Cette liste est disponible sur Internet, avec des photographies, dans la base IRENav/CRUSTA (http://crustiesfroverseas.free.fr/search_result.php?refregion=Juan de Nova). Le bilan de cet inventaire est plus modeste que ceux effectués précédemment pendant les campagnes BIORECIE, à Europa en 2011 (175 espèces) et aux Glorieuses en 2012 (157 espèces). Plus qu’à une plus faible biodiversité, ce résultat est attribué aux difficultés d’échantillonnage à Juan de Nova, avec un platier difficile d’accès, très étendu (2-3 km) et découvrant par ailleurs peu aux moments des basses mer de cette campagne. La faune terrestre est un peu plus riche qu’à Europa, avec la présence du crabe de cocotier Birgus latro et du crabe Geograpsus grayi, mais un peu plus pauvre qu’aux Glorieuses qui compte deux espèces supplémentaires (Coenobita brevimanus et Discoplax rotunda). Une tentative de distribution des espèces par habitats est proposée en adoptant une cartographie simplifiée : milieu terrestre, supra et intertidal, platier sableux, platier corallien, front récifal et récif externe. Les inventaires pour les îles Eparses sont également comparés à celui réalisé pour les Comores, essentiellement Mayotte (483 espèces), zone mieux échantillonnée et beaucoup plus riche car disposant de biotopes plus étendus et plus variés. La faune des îles Eparses est typiquement indo-ouest pacifique dans sa composition avec cependant un petit groupe d’espèces qui ne sont connues que de l’ouest de l’océan Indien. Trois espèces ne sont toujours connues que de îles Eparses : Pagurixus annulus et P. europa Komai & Poupin (2013) et Thalamita pseudospinifera Crosnier (1975) Une forme a été identifiée comme cryptique, correspondant vraisemblablement à une nouvelle espèce (Calcinus aff. pulcher).

Abstract

The present study was carried out at 22 stations located on the fringing reefs of the island of Mayotte inside the perimeter of the Marine Natural Park of Mayotte (PNMM). The average assessment of the number of samples of marine litter (ML) collected at these stations was 3.9 ± 1.3 ML per 500 m 2 in winter and 3.8 ± 1.1 ML per 500 m 2 in summer. Plastic ML was dominant, representing approximately 92% of the litter collected at the stations for the two seasons. The majority was plastic ML from fishing gear (lines, nets etc.). Station 18 presented remarkable average densities of 39 ± 4.2 ML per 500 m 2 for the two seasons and differed from the other stations in that the ML came solely from the catchment areas, with a majority of aluminium ML (56%). Approximately half the coral colonies coming into contact with ML presented an impact dominated by the category of "Broken or abraded colonies", with 25% of the colonies being impacted.
