Studies evaluating the prevalence and impact of recurrent rejection (RR) in pediatric heart transplant (HT) are sparse. The purpose of this study was to describe prevalence and impact of RR on cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) and graft loss after pediatric HT. Data on HT from January 1, 2000, to June 30, 2020, in the Pediatric Heart Transplant Society database were included. Freedom from RR (≥2 rejection episodes) was compared by era (early: 2000-2009; current: 2010-2020). Outcomes for children experiencing RR were compared with those experiencing 0 or 1 rejection episodes and by type of RR (antibody-mediated rejection [AMR], acute cellular rejection [ACR], mixed [ACR/AMR]). Of 6,342 HT recipients, 1,035 (17%) experienced RR. In the current era, pediatric HT recipients were less likely to experience RR (P < 0.001). Freedom from CAV was similar for those experiencing RR to those experiencing 0 or 1 episode (96.6% vs 95.3% vs 96.6%); and similar regardless of the type of RR (AMR, ACR, or mixed) (65.5% vs 82.9% vs 100%) (P > 0.05). Freedom from graft loss was significantly lower for those experiencing RR to those experiencing 0 or 1 episode (56.3% vs 72.3% vs 82.3%) and lower for those experiencing recurrent mixed rejection or recurrent AMR compared with those experiencing recurrent ACR (65.3% vs 50% vs 81.8%). Black children experiencing RR subsequently had lower freedom from CAV and graft loss than White children (P < 0.05 for all). Although prevalence of RR has decreased, children experiencing RR are at greatly increased risk for losing their graft, particularly those who have recurrent mixed or antibody-mediated rejection. Background: The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a comprehensive health survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in the U.S., providing valuable insights into the health status of the population. This study focuses on the NHIS child survey between 2019 and 2021, exploring developmental disabilities in U.S. children, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder or attention-deficit disorder (ADHD/ADD), intellectual disability (ID), other developmental delay (other DD), and learning disability (LD). Objective: Leveraging NHIS data, our primary objective is to investigate the latest trends and disparities in the prevalence of developmental disabilities among various racial-ethnic groups. Methods: Employing a repeated cross-sectional design, we analyzed NHIS data from 2019 to 2021, focusing on children aged 3-17. The survey employed a meticulous stratified multi-stage sampling design. We utilized SAS version 9.4 for data analysis, calculating race-ethnicity-specific prevalence rates and employing weighted linear regression and the Rao-Scott chi-square test for trend analysis. Results: Among 19,490 children, prevalence rates varied: ASD (3.11%), ADHD/ADD (9.50%), ID (1.85%), other DD (5.66%), and LD (7.49%). Non-Hispanic black children exhibited higher rates of ID and LD, while non-Hispanic white children had the highest ADHD/ADD prevalence. Disparities persisted across sociodemographic subgroups, with variations in prevalence rates. Conclusion: Our study reveals an increase in ASD prevalence and persistent disparities among racial-ethnic groups. Lemonade (2016) is a genre-blending text that imports cultural and fantastical devices in order to revise, interrogate, and re-examine history–specifically, the traumas inherited from enslavement. In its analysis of history, Lemonade immortalizes Afrodiasporic spiritual practices and enshrines Black women-healers and magic-users as folk heroes. This work advances that the Afrodiasporic spiritual practices and gynocentric connections are used to form Black female collectives. It draws largely on Black and Africana feminist and womanist scholarship to frame an expanded discussion of spirituality and Black motherhood in the American South, and to demonstrate how collectives–sacred, transhistorical communities–are critical to Black female healing. It contextualizes Lemonade’s “chapters,” visuals, and wider narrative, and it examines the Southern psychic and epistemological resources that Beyoncé, as protagonist, consults. In doing so, this work ultimately intends to create new intellectual space for readers to revisit questions of collectivity in Lemonade and consider the indispensability of community for Black women and girls. AbstractThe HIV pandemic in South Africa has tragically left a wake of vertically infected children who have suffered parental loss and social marginalization. Vertically infected HIV-positive children are those who have acquired the virus from their mother during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. In this paper, the development and alienation of the self is explored in a psychoanalytically informed research case study of a black adolescent girl who was vertically infected with HIV and later fostered by a white mother. This case study explores the sociogenic meanings of raced maternal experiences and disease identified in a series of psychoanalytic interviews, using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Drawing from Melanie Klein, Franz Fanon and other feminist and post-colonial psychoanalytic theorists, the early primal raced and diseased scene is considered through internalizations and fixation on the body. Nosipho is first introduced through a short vignette and a discussion of her early maternal relational experiences. The paper then explores the ambivalence experienced by the participant as part of her HIV and raced lived experiences. HIV and raced subjectivities are both powerful internalized conscious as well as unconscious embodied experiences. For Nosipho, it has been a complicated process found in the shared dual mothering experiences between a biological mother who is black and the subsequent white maternal experiences. The interrogation of this embodied dual experiences of having black mothers who are HIV-positive whilst simultaneously having white mothering roles in children who are vertically infected with HIV is a terrain that is infused by deep contradictory and conflicting emotional and affective states around love and hate, joy and despair, fear, and hope, all at once. Patients with a delayed diagnosis of diabetes are more likely to present in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of missed pediatric diabetes diagnoses in emergency departments (EDs) potentially leading to DKA. Cases of children under 19 years old with a first-time diagnosis of diabetes mellitus presenting to EDs in DKA were drawn from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project database. A total of 11,716 cases were included. A delayed diagnosis of diabetes leading to DKA was defined by an ED discharge in the 14 days prior to the DKA diagnosis. The delayed diagnosis cases were analyzed using multivariate analysis to identify risk factors associated with delay, with the primary exposure being child opportunity index (COI) and secondary exposure being race/ethnicity. Rates of complications were compared across groups. Delayed diagnosis of new onset diabetes leading to DKA occurred in 2.9 %. Delayed diagnosis was associated with COI, with 4.5 , 3.5, 1.9, and 1.5 % occurring by increasing COI quartile (p<0.001). Delays were also associated with younger age and non-Hispanic Black race. Patients with a delayed diagnosis were more likely to experience complications (4.4 vs. 2.2 %, p=0.01) including mechanical ventilation, as well as more frequent intensive care unit admissions and longer length of stays. Among children with new-onset DKA, 2.9 % had a delayed diagnosis. Delays were associated with complications. This review of the 2023 Teaching Black History conference "The Sounds of Blackness, Hip-Hop Turns 50" held at Buffalo University's Centre for K-12 Black History and Racial Literacy Education at the Graduate School of Education, pays particular attention to the intersection of feminism, Hip-Hop, and education. This thread is an important, albeit understated one, that for the past five decades has arguably played a pivotal role in helping Black women and their communities challenge the status quo. This review focuses on talks, seminars and workshops that highlighted the roles of women within Hip-Hop, how these roles have evolved and the extent to which the genre has been shaped and influenced by Black women. Significantly too is the role in which Hip-Hop has shaped and influenced wider society's perceptions of Black women; this paradigm is showcased in the reviews of talks such as "Hip-Hop Feminism: Uplifting Black Girls' Voices in ELA", "Coming out of the Shadows: Hip-Hop Black Women's Identity", and "Ladies First: Women in Hip-Hop His/Herstory". The review outlines the transposable benefits of the conference, the widely encompassing array of subjects covered, and looks to next year's installment of the Teaching Black History conference series. Surviving R. Kelly (Part I) (SRK) was intended to amplify the voices of tens of Black and Latino women who have faced sexualized violence at the hands of singer Robert Kelly. The creators hoped to highlight the fact that these women's testimonies had been deemed untrustworthy by the American legal system, and accosted within mainstream American media. Given that a lack of mainstream outrage regarding the violent experiences of Black women is neither new nor isolated to those victimized by Kelly, and considering that SRK documents the stories of visibly Black women, the docuseries constitutes a potential space for resistance to the harms perpetrated against Black girls and women overall. Thus, I will use a feminist critical theoretical lens to examine the extent to which SRK disrupts the imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchal paradigm within which Black girls' and women's accounts of sexualized violence are systematically denied credibility and/or attention. I argue that, while SRK begins to critique the harmful social norms that hinder the testimonies of Black victims/survivors from being both heard and believed, the docuseries falls short of holding responsible both the people and the systems complicit in the marginalization of Black female victims/survivors. Recent decades have seen increases in parents' time with children and their endorsement of time‐intensive parenting, but little is known about adolescents' attitudes regarding the time that parents in general (i.e., not their own parents specifically) spend with children. We analyze separate attitudinal measures of fathers' time and mothers' time with children using data from the eighth and tenth grade Monitoring the Future surveys for 1991 to 2019. Overall, the majority of adolescents agree that most fathers and mothers, but especially fathers, should spend more time with their children than they do. Black girls are the most likely to agree that fathers and mothers should spend more time with their children while white boys are the least likely. The largest increases in agreement that fathers and mothers should spend more time with their children are found for white girls. Exploring parental education and mother's employment as potential mechanisms for these trends, we find that attitudes about the time most fathers and mothers should spend with children have converged across parental education levels and maternal employment statuses over the years of our study. U.S. public schools provide substantially different educational opportunities to students—even within school districts, where attendance zone boundaries (AZBs) shape most children's access to schools. The (re)drawing of AZBs is therefore a highly consequential policy decision. In this paper, I study how AZB changes in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area affect children of different races between 2000 and 2020, including how they alter children's travel times to school and access to school-level educational opportunities. Findings are starkly unequal, with rezoning disproportionately negatively affecting Black and Hispanic children. The Covid-19 pandemic caused widespread closures of early care and education (ECE) facilities that negatively impacted children's socioemotional, behavioral, and academic development. Policies permitting child care centers to remain open by obtaining waivers from closure directives involved varying levels of administrative burden. This study examined administrative burden within waiver policies and its association with ECE stability, as measured by children's enrollment in waiver-obtaining child care centers. I found Black children were significantly less likely than White children to be enrolled in a waiver-obtaining center, and also far less likely to have a center that obtained a waiver very early on in the pandemic. Analyses showed rates of enrollment in waiver-obtaining centers were far lower among children whose centers experienced more administrative burden, and suggested racial disparities in ECE stability were driven by Black children's concentrated residence in communities where the waiver application process was more burdensome. This paper conducts a scoping review to identify studies which use the framework of intersectionality to understand the overrepresentation of Black women, children, and families within the child welfare system. A comprehensive review of electronic databases was conducted as of June 2021. Of the 4,663 records identified, ten peer-reviewed journal articles met criteria for inclusion within the study across the disciplines of social work, law, public health, and criminal justice. Additional empirical, peer-reviewed journal articles are needed to understand the overrepresentation of Black women, children, and families within the child welfare system using the framework of intersectionality. Little is known about how discrimination contributes to health behaviors in childhood. We examined the association between children's exposure to discrimination and their snacking behavior in a sample of youth of color (N = 164, Mage = 11.5 years, 49% female, 60% Black, 40% Hispanic/Latinx). We also explored whether children's body mass index (BMI) or sleepiness moderated the association between discrimination and calorie consumption. The significant link between discrimination and calorie consumption was moderated by children's BMI, such that discrimination was associated with calorie consumption for children with BMI percentiles above 79%. Children's sleepiness did not serve as an additional moderator. AbstractUsing Street Participatory Action Research (Street PAR), we examined the role of subjective neighborhood quality in bypassing adolescence (through adultification) and pro-violence attitudes among Black male youth. One hundred and thirty-seven street-identified, Black adolescent males (M/SDage = 18.07/1.66) were recruited using snowball sampling through social networks of individuals who identified as “street” or engaged in illegal activity. Respondents reported on neighborhood quality, bypassing adolescence, and pro-violence attitudes. Results showed that poorer perceived neighborhood quality correlated positively with bypassing adolescence and pro-violence attitudes. Bypassing adolescence mediated the association between neighborhood quality and pro-violence attitudes. Thus, street-identified Black boys who had more negative perceptions of their neighborhoods endorsed more positive attitudes toward violence and greater bypassing adolescence, or perceived adultification through street life. This novel finding contextualizes the development of violence attitudes in this understudied population and may suggest that bypassing adolescence is an important site of resilience within a street-identified Black masculinity framework. The purpose of this article is to present five areas for research and school leadership practice that centre African American girls. An analysis of critical race feminist research published in peer-reviewed articles yielded five themes for inclusive and affirming leadership research and practices: (1) Centring African American girls’ and their families’ voices, identities and lived experiences in school visioning and decision-making; (2) Enacting a school culture to ensure access to rigorous curriculum that centers African American girls’ lived experiences; (3) Cultivating emotionally safe school environments; (4) Dismantling inequitable discipline policies and practices and creating physically safe school environments and (5) Ensuring professional learning that centers critical race feminisms and builds educator capacity to affirm African American girls. Professionals play an important role in when and how families access autism services. Black families often experience disparate access to autism services compared to White families. Family Peer Advocates (FPAs) are professionals who have personal experience with the diagnostic process, school-based supports, and community-based services, and provide training and support to families. Understanding the experiences of FPAs may help researchers and practitioners better address the needs of Black autistic children and their families. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore FPAs' experiences providing autism-related services and resources for Black families with autistic children. We conducted focus groups with 32 FPAs from two agencies in one southeastern state. Three themes emerged from our inductive data analysis regarding FPA experiences: (a) serving multiple roles; (b) working with "zero resources"; and (c) variations in racial responsivity. Given our findings, we call for FPAs to ensure they are considering and responding to the intersecting impact of race on families' experiences with autism diagnosis and services. Malignant lymphoma is an unusual form of gallbladder neoplasm. Almost all these tumors are diffuse large B-cell lymphomas or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-type lymphomas. Herein, we present a literature review of gallbladder Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) cases that includes also an unpublished case in an HIV-infected child, observed by our center. The patient (a five-year-old black female child) attended the Federal Hospital of Lagoa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, underwent cholecystectomy, and the postoperative pathological analysis of the gallbladder revealed a diagnosis of BL (EBV-positive). Also, HIV serology was performed and returned positive. She was transferred to the Martagão Gesteira Institute of Pediatrics and Childcare for oncological treatment, dying from sepsis and disease progression about 18 months later. The patient did not undergo ART/cART. Previous cases of gallbladder BL were herein described and analyzed to characterize the clinicopathological features and possible similarities. BL can occur in the gallbladder both in the context of HIV infection and in the pediatric population. A biopsy is mandatory in cases with suggestive findings of lymphoma, and an early diagnosis can change the course of the disease. Background Children living in poverty and those of marginalized race or ethnicity experience inferior disease outcomes across many cancers. Whether survival disparities exist in osteosarcoma is poorly defined. We investigated the association between race, ethnicity, and proxied poverty exposures and event-free and overall survival for children with nonmetastatic osteosarcoma receiving care on a cooperative group trial. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of US patients with nonmetastatic, osteosarcoma aged 5-21 years enrolled on the Children's Oncology Group trial AOST0331. Race and ethnicity were categorized to reflect historically marginalized populations, as Hispanic, non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic Other, and non-Hispanic White. Poverty was proxied at the household and neighborhood levels. Overall survival and event-free survival functions of time from trial enrollment were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method. Hypotheses of associations between risks for event-free survival, death, and postrelapse death with race and ethnicity were assessed using log-rank tests. Results Among 758 patients, 25.6% were household-poverty and 28.5% neighborhood-poverty exposed. Of the patients, 21% of children identified as Hispanic, 15.4% non-Hispanic Black, 5.3% non-Hispanic Other, and 54.0% non-Hispanic White. Neither household or neighborhood poverty nor race and ethnicity were statistically significantly associated with risks for event-free survival or death. Postrelapse risk for death differed statistically significantly across race and ethnicity with non-Hispanic Black patients at greatest risk (4-year postrelapse survival 35.7% Hispanic vs 13.0% non-Hispanic Black vs 43.8% non-Hispanic Other vs 38.9% non-Hispanic White; P  = .0046). Conclusions Neither proxied poverty exposures or race and ethnicity were associated with event-free survival or overall survival, suggesting equitable outcomes following frontline osteosarcoma trial-delivered therapy. Richard Wright represents the African American experience of white racism in his novel Native Son and autobiography Black Boy. In the two works, Wright delves into the psychic effects of white racism on young African Americans. From a pragmatic perspective, this article analyzes the conversations between whites and young African Americans in the two works, with the aim of exploring how the conversations can impact on how the young African Americans think about reality and about themselves in relation to whites, that is, how whites attempt to form black subjectivity through conversation. The conversational mechanisms of the formation of black subjectivity are investigated by building on research in pragmatics on conversational cooperation and interpersonal pragmatics. The article first examines the structural features of black-white conversations, and explains the conversational norms by using Grice's theory of conversation as the explanatory framework. The analysis sheds light on the relative nature of Grice's maxims and the inseparability of the informational and the relational aspects of conversation. The article examines the relationship dynamics of black-white conversations by drawing on studies in interpersonal pragmatics. Racially restrictive covenants in housing deeds, commonplace in Minnesota for houses built from the 1910s to the 1950s, provided a foundation for the myriad of policies that made it difficult for people of color to obtain housing. Though covenants were ruled illegal in 1968, their legacy continues to shape neighborhoods. The Mapping Prejudice Project's efforts in Hennepin County, Minnesota, produced the first systematic documentation of racially restrictive covenants. We use this novel data set to explore the relationship between historic covenants and current health and wellbeing outcomes. Using regression analysis to control for neighborhood level covariates, we compare previously covenanted neighborhoods to neighborhoods without covenants. Today, previously covenanted neighborhoods have higher life expectancy and lower rates of obesity, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and asthma than neighborhoods without racially restrictive covenants. Additionally, previously covenanted neighborhoods have less upward mobility for children from poorer households, and there are larger gaps in upward mobility between white and Black children. These findings contribute to a growing literature that shows racist policies, even decades after they are legally enforceable, leave an imprint on neighborhoods. Using the novel data from the Mapping Prejudice Project, we provide statistical analysis that confirms qualitative and anecdotal evidence on the role of racial covenants in shaping neighborhoods. "Textures: The History and Art of Black Hair" and "Black Hair in a White World" are two books that explore the significance of Black hair in relation to politics, discrimination, and self-image. The books feature essays and personal narratives that discuss the natural hair movement and its connection to Black American culture and identity. The books also analyze cultural artifacts and artworks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the history and representation of Black hair. This study expanded on research examining families' roles in youth gender development that has investigated boys' versus girls' family experiences by using a within-family design to study the gender socialization of brothers versus sisters from the same families. We drew from archival data collected in 2001–2002 from an ethnic homogeneous sample of Black American mother–father families (N = 128) who were raising at least one son and one daughter; the majority of youth were adolescents (range 2–31 years). In separate home interviews, mothers and fathers described whether and how they socialized their sons versus daughters about education, their futures, and racism and discrimination. Across these three domains, most parents reported that they did not socialize their sons and daughters differently. Nonetheless, several themes emerged that illuminated race and race–gender intersectionality in parents' socialization, both resistance and accommodation to traditional gender norms, and the role of children's personal characteristics in parents' socialization, with similar themes evident among parents who did and who did not report socializing sons and daughters differently. Black children and their families encounter systemic disadvantages in their journey to and through an autism diagnosis. Black families often experience social and systemic barriers to service use. Providing family-centered, psychoeducational interventions can reduce barriers to service access and utilization for Black families raising autistic children. Fostering Advocacy, Communication, Empowerment, and Support (FACES) has demonstrated preliminary efficacy in strengthening outcomes among Black families, yet little is known about the long-term impact of the intervention. The purpose of this qualitative interview study was to understand the experiences of FACES graduates 16 months after the intervention. Four major themes emerged: (a) strengthened advocacy, (b) strengthened empowerment, (c) systemic barriers, and (d) home and community barriers. We provide implications for research and practice. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) confer risk to the mental health of Black youth, but few studies have examined how youth gender, family, and neighborhood factors jointly influence the psychological impact of adversity. This study investigates if family resilience and neighborhood cohesion jointly moderate the link between latent ACE profiles and mental health among Black girls and boys. This study uses data from the National Survey of Children's Health, combined across the years 2016 through 2021, and includes a nationally representative sample of 5,493 Black youth (48% female) between the ages of 12 and 17. Two patterns of ACEs were identified using latent class analysis characterized by no-to-minimal ACE exposure and moderate-to-high ACE exposure. Membership in the high-ACEs class increased the risk for internalizing problems among Black boys (b = 0.56, p <.001) and girls (b = 0.42, p <.01). Only boys in the high-ACEs class who also reported low levels of family resilience and low neighborhood cohesion evidenced an increased risk for externalizing concerns (b = 0.70, p <.001). Conversely, only girls in the high-ACEs class who reported high levels of family resilience and low levels of neighborhood cohesion evidenced an increased risk for externalizing problems (b = 0.69, p <.01). Findings suggest that the impact of ACEs on mental health is not uniform across Black boys and girls, and that family and neighborhood-level factors may collectively shape the impact of ACEs on the mental health among Black youth in unique ways. General Scientific Summary: This study suggests that the absence of family resilience and neighborhood cohesion increases the risk for externalizing problems among Black boys with a chronic history of adverse childhood experiences. This is a conceptual paper that explores critiquing picturebooks set in Africa. The paper is grounded in BlackCrit (Black Critical Theory) and Racial and Ethnic Socialization (RES). Using pragmatism as a method, we offer a detailed analysis of 3 carefully selected books, on the broad basis of authenticity, accuracy, and respectfulness. A deeper dive into the books looks for hidden messages that dehumanize, oversimplify, exotify, and generally present Africa from a Eurocentric lens. The critique goes beyond the books by looking at how they are shared on YouTube and other forums that offer pedagogical ideas for sharing the books with children. Overall, from the critique we find that books authored by cultural insiders are favorable while the reverse is, in most cases, true with authors who are cultural outsiders. The paper emphasizes the power of accurate, authentic, and respectful pro-Blackness representations as beneficial for all children in developing positive behaviors, attitudes and agency toward pro-Blackness and antiracist rhetoric. • Teacher and child race are important as racialized interactions impact children's development. • The quality of early learning environments may look different for Black and Latine populations. • Various levels of racism and biases may interrupt Black and Latine children's learning. The purpose of the current study is to use secondary data to examine the extent to which the ECERS-3, specifically the factor structure, is equivalent across Black and Latine/Hispanic teachers, racial and ethnic classroom composition, and race/ethnicity of students. Data were drawn from a large-scale 2015-16 validation study of the ECERS-3 in three states (Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Washington) that were using the ECERS-3 as part of their quality rating and improvement systems (QRIS). Approximately 1,063 classrooms serving children between the ages of 3 and 5 were included in the final sample, and about 69 percent of the teachers identified as White. Findings revealed that the basic factor structure of the ECERS-3 was similar in the sample of classrooms when compared across lead teacher race, classroom racial composition, and lead teacher-child match; however, some differences were found in factor loadings and item thresholds. These findings have implications for ensuring that measures to assess global quality consider differential effects of race of the teacher, child, and classroom composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Black girls in the United States are at increased risk for HIV and sexually transmitted infections due to early sexual development, stereotyping, adultification, and lack of protection. The Becoming a Sexual Black Woman framework highlights protection, or lack thereof, as a critical component of Black girls' sexual development. Objective: The purpose of this study was twofold. First, we sought to understand how girls protect their bodies within the societal context of the COVID‐19 pandemic and social injustice. Second, we aimed to explore how Black men can better protect Black girls' sexual development. Method: We conducted 25 in‐depth interviews with Black girls aged 9 to 18 years, primarily across the Midwestern United States. We performed a directed content analysis by reviewing transcripts, coding data, and developing themes. Results: Findings revealed four themes: (a) feeling unsafe, (b) adultification of Black girls' bodies and increased vulnerability to harm, (c) desire for more protection by Black male caregivers, and (d) needing Black men to speak up. Conclusion: Black men's engagement in girls' sexual development may significantly influence the health outcomes of Black girls and women throughout their life course. Understanding how marginalized students experience and perceive mathematics is critical to achieving the goal of inclusive and equitable math pedagogy. We report on 67 focus groups with 251 predominantly Black high schoolers experiencing economic marginalization in the Southern United States and attended to their achievement level and race-gender identities. Students often shared concerns about their teacher's math knowledge for teaching and effectiveness in supporting academic success. Their self-perceptions of math identities varied, and students often did not value advanced math even when they expressed career interests that require advanced math. We discuss practical implications for supporting the math development of marginalized high schoolers, including centering the needs and strengths of Black girls, and propose an expanded inclusive and equitable pedagogical framework. ABSTRACT Moral decisions often involve dilemmas: cases of conflict between competing obligations. In two studies (N = 204), we ask whether children appreciate that reasoning through dilemmas involves acknowledging that there is no single, simple solution. In Study 1, 5‐ to 8‐year‐old US children were randomly assigned to a Moral Dilemma condition, in which story characters face dilemmas between two prosocial actions, or a Personal Cost control, in which story characters face decisions between a matched prosocial action and a self‐interested action. Children were then presented with two reasoners who made the same judgment, but one confidently endorsed one moral action, and the other hesitantly acknowledged both actions. As they aged, children became more likely to prefer the uncertain reasoner's “way of thinking” in the Moral Dilemma compared to the Personal Cost condition. They also inferred that the uncertain reasoner was nicer and more trustworthy than the confident one. In Study 2, when both reasoners acknowledged the dilemma and differed only in their level of uncertainty, 5‐year‐olds preferred the acknowledgment to be accompanied by a confident decision, 6‐ and 7‐year‐olds preferred it be accompanied by uncertainty, and 8‐year‐olds showed no preference. These results show that, before the age at which children can resolve dilemmas successfully on their own, they recognize and value others who approach dilemmas with appropriate humility. There is a well-established body of literature on parent-child sexual communication (PCSC) among Black families. Still, most of this work focuses on reducing sexual risk behaviors among Black girls and focuses less on the multidimensionality of PCSC among Black parents and their daughters. In this qualitative study, we explored Black mother-daughter PCSC by analyzing interviews with 29 Black mothers in the U.S. with daughters ages 6–11. We used consensual qualitative research methods to analyze mother’s responses to questions about the messages and strategies they used when educating their daughters about sex-related topics, such as pleasure and sexual identity. We identified the following themes related to mothers’ goals with their messages: (1) increasing awareness through neutral information, (2) building daughter’s sense of self, (3) challenging societal norms and White heteropatriarchy, and (4) upholding societal norms and White heteropatriarchy. We also developed five themes for mother’s strategies for PCSC: (5) direct and open PCSC, (6) modeling, (7) integrating real-life examples, (8) centering the child, and (9) monitoring and tailoring daughters’ experiences with others. Our findings add to existing research on sex-positive practices among Black families, highlight the need to use critical lenses when exploring PCSC, and have important implications for parent education. Introduction: In the United States (US), racial and socioeconomic disparities have been implicated in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admissions and outcomes, with higher rates of critical illness in more deprived areas. The degree to which this persists despite insurance coverage is unknown. We investigated whether disparities exist in PICU admission and mortality according to socioeconomic position and race in children receiving Medicaid. Methods: Using Medicaid data from 2007–2014 from 23 US states, we tested the association between area level deprivation and race on PICU admission (among hospitalized children) and mortality (among PICU admissions). Race was categorized as Black, White, other and missing. Patient-level ZIP Code was used to generate a multicomponent variable describing area-level social vulnerability index (SVI). Race and SVI were simultaneously tested for associations with PICU admission and mortality. Results: The cohort contained 8,914,347 children (23·0% Black). There was no clear trend in odds of PICU admission by SVI; however, children residing in the most vulnerable quartile had increased PICU mortality (aOR 1·12 (95%CI 1·04–1·20; p = 0·0021). Black children had higher odds of PICU admission (aOR 1·04; 95% CI 1·03–1·05; p < 0·0001) and higher mortality (aOR 1·09; 95% CI 1·02–1·16; p = 0·0109) relative to White children. Substantial state-level variation was apparent, with the odds of mortality in Black children varying from 0·62 to 1·8. Conclusion: In a Medicaid cohort from 2007–2014, children with greater socioeconomic vulnerability had increased odds of PICU mortality. Black children were at increased risk of PICU admission and mortality, with substantial state-level variation. The purpose of this study is to examine how the perceptions of school climate, specifically school relationships, differ for Black girls with and without an individualized education plan (IEP) as compared to their peers. The study utilized survey responses from high school students in a Georgia school district who participated in the 2020 Georgia Student Health Survey (GSHS) prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. A confirmatory factor analysis confirmed a second-order model with eight subscales and measurement invariance was established among ethnicity (race), gender, and disability variables. Results from the ANOVA illustrated that the differences between the mean school climate ratings for Black girls with IEPs as compared to their peers in the Peer Social Support, Adult Social Support, and Cultural Acceptance subscales of the GSHS were statistically significant. Further, small effects for race were detected. Additionally, Black girls with and without IEPs consistently rated school climate the lowest among the subgroups examined. This study should be used to prompt further examination of the influence of intersectionality on schooling experiences, specifically for double or triple-minority students, and to understand what (if any) cultural adaptations exist for frequently used evidence-based strategies/interventions designed to promote a positive school climate. Impact Statement School psychologists play a critical role in creating and maintaining a positive school climate. As leaders in this space, school psychologists can partner with school leaders, teachers, and families to raise awareness of the schooling experiences of minoritized groups, examine how current practices incorporate cultural adaptations, and develop effective interventions that foster relationships, connectedness, cultural acceptance, and community. As such, school psychologists will be primed to think about culturally responsive approaches that will improve schooling experiences and by in large school climate for minoritized groups. This qualitative study aimed to explore the approaches used by Black principal supervisors to professionally develop Black principals in public K–12 settings. Using a phenomenological approach and thematic analysis design, I examined the philosophy and strategies employed by 11 experienced Black principal supervisors in their work to assist Black principals in navigating the U.S. public school system and best ensure the success of their students and staff. Participants were recruited through professional organization networks and participated in virtual one-on-one interviews that were transcribed and analyzed to identify commonalities and challenges in the experiences of Black principal supervisors. Eight themes were identified and appear to be consistent with the literature on principal supervision in alignment with critical race theory and adaptive leadership, each of which helped to guide the study design. Results provide a blueprint for Black school leadership in a way that promotes excellence and transforms schools. Plain language summary: This study looked into how Black supervisors help Black principals get better at their jobs in public schools for kids from kindergarten to 12th grade. I focused on understanding the beliefs and methods of 11 experienced Black supervisors who guide Black principals through the challenges of the U.S. public school system to help their schools and everyone in them succeed. These supervisors were found through professional groups and shared their experiences during online interviews. After recording and studying these interviews, I found eight main themes that match what other studies have found about supervising principals, especially when considering the importance of race and flexible leadership. Background: Black American children are at higher risk for developing asthma than White children. Identifying potential scalable preventive interventions that can reduce the racial disparities in asthma prevalence and associated morbidity and mortality are needed. We leveraged data from an RCT of prenatal supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in Black American women, to explore whether prenatal fatty acid supplementation is associated with offspring wheeze and asthma. Methods: Data were from the Nutrition and Pregnancy Study (NAPS), a double-blind RCT of prenatal DHA supplementation in Black women targeting stress regulation during pregnancy. A subset of mothers (n = 83) completed a standardized questionnaire on offspring wheeze and asthma when children were between 0.5 and 5.5 years of age. DHA levels were measured from venous blood and reported as percent of total fatty acids. Results: Of the 83 mothers providing data on child wheeze and asthma, 57 (68.7%) had been randomized to active DHA and 26 (31.3%) to placebo. Mothers and research staff were blind to group assignment. Comparison at the group assignment level yielded a relative reduction of 32% in the rate of wheeze or asthma among offspring of mothers assigned to active DHA compared to offspring of mothers assigned to placebo (OR = 1.6 [95% CI = 0.50– 5.09], p = 0.426). DHA levels measured at 25– 29 and 33– 37 weeks of gestation differed as a function of offspring wheeze or asthma (t = 2.21, p = 0.015 and t = 2.54, p = 0.007, respectively). Conclusion: These preliminary data suggest that increasing prenatal levels of DHA could be considered as a potential prevention for asthma in Black American children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Objectives: This study examines trends in county-level vaccination coverage before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic among children aged 2–3 and 4–6 years in Tennessee, with a focus on rurality; Methods: Data from the Tennessee Immunization Information System (January 2017 to September 2023) were analyzed for vaccination coverage in children in both age groups. The study categorized the COVID-19 pandemic into three periods: pre-pandemic (P1: January 2017 to December 2019), stay-at-home (P2: January 2020 to May 2021), and reopening (P3: June 2021 to September 2023). Vaccination trends were stratified by vaccine type, rurality, sex, race and ethnicity; Results: During P1, there were no significant changes in trends of vaccination coverage percentages in both rural and urban counties for both age groups. However, vaccination coverage declined significantly during P2 and P3 compared to P1 for most vaccines, except for influenza, which initially increased but later declined. Rural counties experienced a more pronounced decline compared to urban counties during P2 and P3 for both age groups. Within rural and urban counties, vaccination coverage was higher among white children compared to black children, and among non-Hispanic compared to Hispanic children. There were higher coverage percentages in age group 4–6 for all vaccines, except for influenza, compared to 2–3 year group; Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated disparities in childhood vaccination coverage, particularly in rural areas.
