Background: the variations in a child's overall body shape and figure among different countries are attributable to differences in genetics, environmental factors, and the interaction between these elements. This study aims to evaluate the validity, reliability, and appropriateness of applying international growth standards to Jordanian children and adolescents aged 2–19 years old. Methods: 65,828 Jordanian children and adolescents (43% males; 57% females) aged 2–19 years old were selected from the Hakeem Program database and various private schools across Jordan. Height-for-age, weight-for-age, and body mass index (BMI)-for-age were analyzed comparatively for Jordanian children and adolescents against international growth standards. The z-score for each record was computed based on international equations. Results: Mean z-scores for height-for-age, weight-for-age, and BMI-for-age for both genders showed significant deviation from international standards across most age intervals. It was found that in most age groups, Jordanian children and adolescents were shorter and lighter than CDC and WHO standards, except for females at ages ≥ 16 years, who were heavier with higher BMI-for-age values than CDC standards based on weight-for-age and BMI-for-age equations. Moreover, Jordanian males at ages ≥ 12 years had lower BMI-for-age values than CDC standards. Conclusions: Jordanian children and adolescents showed significant deviations in their measurements from international standards and growth reference values. Background: Allied health professionals, nurses and doctors within the New South Wales (NSW) public health system provide trusted health information to a large proportion of families across the state. This means they are well positioned to opportunistically assess and discuss child weight status with families. Prior to 2016, weight status was not routinely addressed in most NSW public health settings, however recent policy changes promote quarterly growth assessments for all children aged under 16 years who attend these facilities. The Ministry of Health recommend health professionals use the 5 As framework, a consultation approach to encourage behaviour change, to identify and manage children with overweight or obesity. This study aimed to explore allied health professionals', nurses' and doctors' perceptions of conducting routine growth assessments and providing lifestyle support to families in a local health district in rural and regional NSW, Australia. Methods: This descriptive, qualitative study involved online focus groups and semi-structured interviews with health professionals. Audio recordings were transcribed and coded for thematic analysis, with rounds of data consolidation between research team members. Results: Allied health professionals, nurses and doctors who work in a variety of settings within a local health district of NSW participated in one of four focus groups (n = 18 participants) or semi-structured interviews (n = 4). The predominant themes related to: (1) health professionals' professional identity and their perceived scope of practice; (2) interpersonal qualities of health professionals; (3) the service delivery ecosystem in which health professionals worked. Diversity in attitudes and beliefs about routine growth assessments were not necessarily specific to discipline or setting. Conclusions: Allied health professionals, nurses and doctors recognise the complexities involved in conducting routine growth assessments and providing lifestyle support to families. The 5 As framework used in NSW public health facilities to encourage behaviour change may not allow clinicians to address these complexities in a patient centred way. The findings of this research will be used to inform future strategies aimed at embedding preventive health discussions into routine clinical practice, and to support health professionals to identify and manage children with overweight or obesity. Health professionals in various settings have the potential to engage in preventive health discussions and play a key role in early identification and management of children with obesity. This research extends our understanding of growth assessments and obesity interventions beyond general practice settings. Nutrition transition and globalization have affected the diet and body composition of all life stages including adolescents. This study aims to compare body weight status, psychological distress and disordered eating (DE), and to compare the association between BMI-for-age z-score (BAZ) and psychological distress with DE among Indonesian and Malaysian urban female adolescents. The adolescents’ weight and height were measured and a self-administered questionnaire was completed by each adolescent. A total of 713 girls (Indonesia = 47.8%, Malaysia = 52.2%), aged 12–19 years from Bekasi, Indonesia and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, participated in this study. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was not significantly different between Indonesian and Malaysian girls (18.2% vs 21.2%). Malaysian girls have a significantly higher prevalence of DE (23.9% vs 3.2%), depression (51.9% vs 26.1%), and stress (41.7% vs 29.6%) than Indonesian girls. However, the prevalence of anxiety in Indonesian girls was significantly higher compared to Malaysian girls (77.7% vs 66.4%). For Indonesian girls, BAZ and stress were significantly positive associated with DE, dieting, and bulimia and food preoccupation. For Malaysian girls, BAZ, anxiety and stress were significantly positive associated with DE. BAZ and stress were significantly positive associated with dieting. Depression and anxiety were significantly and positively associated with bulimia and food preoccupation. For both Indonesian and Malaysian girls, stress was significantly positive associated with oral control. Therefore, future intervention programme on promoting healthy eating among female adolescents should consider the psychological well-being component.

Abstract Background Malnutrition hampers educational performance of schoolchildren coming from low-income families. School feeding program was, thus, launched in public primary schools in Addis Ababa very recently. It is, thus, important to measure the initial nutritional status of participating students to see the effect of the program on their nutritional wellbeing. Methods The first-round survey was made at the initiation of the program. A multi-stage stratified sampling from 50 schools located in the ten sub cities of Addis Ababa yielded 4500 children and adolescents of ages five to 19 years. Data was collected on age, height, weight and MUAC of the schoolchildren. Nutritional status was evaluated using conventional anthropometric indicators, modified Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (mCIAF), and MUAC-for-age. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve was used to examine classification of malnourishment by MUAC-for-age versus BMI-for-age and mCIAF versus MUAC-for-age. Multilevel mixed effects model was applied to investigate variations in the prevalence of malnutrition across sub cities. Findings The area under the ROC curves (AUC) for MUAC-for-age against BMI-for-age z-scores was 0.68 and that of mCIAF against MUAC-for-age was 0.70, respectively, indicating an overall better classification of malnourishment. Mixed effects model showed significant variations in nutritional status of schoolchildren across sub cities. Conventional measures showed that prevalence of stunting, thinness, or underweight among the sample children and adolescents was 23.4, 18.4, and 16.5%, respectively. Global and Indian data indicate that children from all the segments of population face dual nutrition burden and related health consequences. Long-term cohort studies have shown that both the under- and overnutrition are risk factors for overnutrition and non-communicable diseases in adult life. Halting the rise in overnutrition is one of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets to be achieved by 2030. With the development and inclusion of body mass index (BMI)-for-age in the WHO child growth standards, it has become possible to assess over- and undernutrition in short-statured children. In India, the Annual Health Survey (AHS) (2014) and the District Level Household Survey 4 (DLHS4) (2013) undertook measurement of height/length and weight (AHS 557016 and DLHS4 295663) in the 0–18-year of school-age children from selected households. Prevalence of overnutrition in 0–18-year children was calculated from these two surveys by using the WHO standards for BMI-for-age (BMI-for-age z scores (BAZ) > +2 in 0–5 and BAZ > +1 in 5–18-year children) as well as uniform norms of either > +1 or > +2 BAZ across 0–18-year children. An attempt was made to explore the policy and program implications of using different norms for assessing overnutrition in preschool and school age children in the Indian context. Body mass index-for-age curve for the 0–18-year Indian children was calculated and compared with the WHO BMI-for-age curve. Across 0–18-year children, the mean BMI-for-age of Indian boys and girls was lower than the mean of the WHO standards, but the trajectory followed was similar. Therefore, Indian high-risk under- and overnourished children can be monitored by using the WHO BMI-for-age curve. Irrespective of the cutoff used for BMI-for-age, prevalence of overnutrition was higher in preschool as compared to school-age children. Overnourished school-age children outnumbered preschool children, especially if the WHO cutoffs were used. The school health system may find it difficult to implement programs that aimed at detection and management of large number of overnourished children. If uniform norm of BAZ > +1 was used, prevalence of overnutrition in preschool children was high and almost similar to undernutrition. Currently, nutrition programs for preschool children are focused on undernutrition and they may find it difficult to manage program focused on overnutrition in large number of children. If the uniform norm of BAZ > +2 was used, both the prevalence of overnutrition and number of children requiring intervention were relatively low in all the age groups. The existing preschool and school nutrition programs can take up an integrated program aimed at early detection and effective management of both the under- (BAZ < −2) and overnutrition (BAZ > +2) in 0–18-year children and strive to achieve the SDG targets.

One of the important aspects of today's research in the area of public health is the nutritional health of children populations which has been suffering from decades and now became a burning issue in public health. Scholars worldwide appointed themselves to understand the role of multiple factors working behind it such as demographic imbalance, socio-economic factors, food impurity, parental unconsciousness etc. Likewise, the present study is a small attempt to understand the nutritional health of the children of a particular population, residing in a peri-urban region of North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, India, in light of maternal knowledge and practices regarding child's health and nutrition. A total of 96 under-five children have been accounted for in this study through random sampling from the ICDS centers of Madhyamgram town. Data on children's HAZ, BAZ, birth weight and maternal knowledge and practices has been collected through anthropometric measurements of children and interviews of mothers. Study reveals that according to HAZ they are in a satisfying condition as their prevalence percentage in low HAZ shows 3.12% but in case of low BAZ, the prevalence percentage shows unsatisfactory result (36.46%) as found in case of low-birth-weight (39.58%). The study also found insignificant association between children's socio-economic background and their nutritional failure but found some disparity among maternal knowledge and its practices. The study concludes that the studied children population is in unsatisfying nutritional condition only in terms of their BAZ which might be the result of inconsistency in the knowledge and it's practices of mothers. Objective: WHO BMI-for-age z score (BAZ) is widely used in epidemiology, yet it does not distinguish body fat-free mass and fat mass which are better indicators of obesity and related risks. The stable isotope dilution techniques (SIDT) are gold standard methods of assessing body composition. Main objective was to assess significant differences in measurement and validity of WHO BMI-for-age classification for defining childhood obesity by comparing with body fatness using SIDT among schoolchildren.Design: A cross-sectional analytical study. A questionnaire, anthropometry and body composition data were used. SPSS was used to analyse data at P < 0·05 at 95 % CI.Setting: Primary schools in Nairobi City County, Kenya.Participants: One hundred seventy-nine schoolchildren aged 8-11 years were randomly sampled.Results: Prevalence of adiposity by reference SIDT (24·0 %) was significantly higher than that of obesity by BAZ > 2 sd (2·8 %) (Wilcoxon test, P < 0·05). Concordance coefficient between SIDT and BAZ > 2 sd in diagnosing obesity was poor (κ = 0·167). Only 11·6 % of children with excess body fat were correctly diagnosed as obese by BAZ > 2 sd. The use of BAZ > 1 sd for overweight and obesity showed fair concordance coefficient (κ = 0·409, P < 0·001) with 32·5% of children with excess fat positively identified as overweight and obese.Conclusion: WHO BMI-for-age cut-off points severely underestimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity compared with body composition assessment by stable isotope dilution techniques. Introduction: Good nutritional status is pertinent to the optimal outcome of effective ART among children. Against this backdrop, the objective of the current study is to assess the nutritional indices of children receiving ART in South-West Nigeria. Methods: The study was cross-sectional in design. We randomly selected three urban and six rural ART sites from the ones offering ART services in Oyo state. All consented children receiving ART treatments in the aforementioned sites participated in the study. A total of 390 HIV-positive children and adolescents aged 6–18 years were interviewed using a semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. Children were assessed and growth curves were constructed using the 2007 World Health Organisation (WHO) growth reference standard for children as well as adolescents. Data were presented using descriptive statistics. Results: About 52% of the children are male, 136 (34.9%) have lost at least one parent, 52 (13.3%) have lost either parent to HIV/AIDS. Among the males, 19%, 27%, and 27% were underweight, stunted and thin, respectively when compared with 17%, 23% and 23%, respectively, among females. The male and female weight-for-age average z-score were (-0.98 vs -1.04), height-for-age (-1.12 vs -1.07), and BMI-for-age (-1.19 vs -1.18). Irrespective of age, sex, parental survival, and residence, weight-for-age and BMI-for-age analysis revealed substantial underweight, with the worst outcomes being among those orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Conclusion: All nutritional indices considered in this study fell short of the WHO standard. HIV positive children in the ART sites included in this study are faced with a high burden of undernourishment despite been placed on daily ART regimens. In addition to efficient ART, interventions to ameliorate poor nutritional status is needed.

Introduction: Osteoporosis poses a significant health burden, particularly among postmenopausal women. While obesity in the form of BMI has been implicated in various health conditions, the relationship between waist-hip ratio (WHR) and osteoporosis remains debated. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of osteoporosis risk and explore the association between WHR and osteoporosis risk among postmenopausal women in rural South India., Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu. The study enrolled 435 postmenopausal women aged 45 years and above and the data were collected on socio-demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and osteoporosis risk assessment using the Osteoporosis Self-assessment Tool for Asian Women (OSTA) scale. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with osteoporosis risk with 95%CI., Results: The mean (SD) age of participants was 54.5 (8.6) years, 87% were married, 33% were illiterate with mean (SD) WHR of 0.88 (0.1). Around 80.5% of the participants were categorized as low risk, 16.1% as intermediate risk, and 3.5% as high risk based on OSTA scores. Older age, lower educational attainment, and higher waist-hip ratio were significantly associated with increased osteoporosis risk., Conclusion: This community-based study found a 20% osteoporosis risk among postmenopausal women using the OSTA scale, with age, lower education, and waist-hip ratio as key determinants. Study Design: Retrospective.Objective: Assess the impact of varying severity of BMI on 30-day outcomes following posterior spinal fusions in neuromuscular scoliosis.Summary Of Background Data: Obesity in the pediatric population is shown to be associated with adverse outcomes across varying specialties. The weight-outcome relationship in neuromuscular scoliosis has not been thoroughly investigated.Methods: The 2012-2016 American College of Surgeons - National Surgical Quality Improvement (ACS-NSQIP) database was queried using Current Procedural Terminology codes 22800, 22802, and 22804 to identify patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion for neuromuscular scoliosis only. BMI was classified into four groups based on the Center for Disease Control (CDC) BMI-for-age percentile chart - Normal weight (BMI ≥5th to <85th percentile), Underweight (<5th percentile), Overweight (≥85th to <95th percentile) and Obese (≥95th percentile). Multivariate regression models were built to understand the impact of varying BMI severity classes on 30-day outcomes.Results: A total of 1291 patients underwent posterior spinal fusion for neuromuscular scoliosis. A total of 695 (53.8%) were normal weight, 286 (22.2%) were underweight, 145 (11.2%) were overweight, and 165 (12.8%) were obese. Obese patients versus normal weight patients were at a significantly higher risk of surgical site infections (OR 2.15; P = 0.035), wound dehiscence (OR 1.58; P = 0.037), urinary tract infections (OR 3.41; P = 0.010), and 30-day readmissions (OR 1.94; P = 0.029). Of note, overweight versus normal weight individuals had higher odds of cardiopulmonary complications (OR 8.82; P = 0.024). No significant associations were seen for varying BMI and other 30-day outcomes.Conclusions: Obese neuromuscular patients undergoing PSF have higher odds of experiencing adverse outcomes, particularly surgical site infections, urinary tract infections, and readmissions. Providers should promote prevention strategies, such as dietary modification and/or early physical activity in these high-risk patients to minimize the risks of experiencing complications in the acute postoperative period.Level Of Evidence: 3. Background In India, 44.8% of adolescent girls are under-nourished, while about 8%-13% of girls are overweight. Though several studies have been done regarding the nutritional status of adolescent girls over the years, there have been no significant changes. Also, there are several different anthropometric indicators for nutritional status assessment, due to which there are huge variations in the prevalence of malnutrition across different studies. So the objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of malnutrition using different anthropometric indicators and compare them. Methods A random sample of 426 girls was taken from Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) of the Centre for Community Medicine (CCM), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and a semi-structured questionnaire was administered among 386 of them to determine associated factors. Height, weight, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) were measured for 386 girls, and BMI for age and height for age z scores were calculated using WHO AnthroPlus. Mid-upper arm circumference for age z scores (MUAC for age) were calculated using Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS) charts by the CDC for girls aged one year to 20 years. Results It was found in this study that using BMI for age z scores (BAZ), 33.4% of the adolescent girls were malnourished; 18.9% (95% CI 15.1-23.2) being underweight, 10.6% (95% CI: 7.7-14.1) being overweight, and 3.9% (95% CI: 2.2-6.3) were obese. While using BMI solely as an indicator, the prevalence of thinness was 51.8% (95% CI: 46.9-56.9), while that of overweight and obesity was 10.6% (95% CI: 5.7-11.5) and 1.0% (95% CI: 0.2-2.6), respectively. The prevalence of under-nutrition by MUAC for age z scores was 53.4% (95% CI: 48.2-58.4), and that of over-nutrition was 1.8% (95% CI: 1.0-3.7). BMI for age z scores positively and strongly correlated with both MUAC and MUAC for age z scores and had a significant association with both on univariable linear regression. Though there was a negative correlation between BMI for age z scores and height-for-age z scores, it was not significant. Background: Previous studies reported lower health-related quality of life (HRQOL) scores in overweight and obese adolescents compared to their normal weight counterparts; however, few studies investigated the association between obesity-related behaviors including physical activity and sedentary behaviors and HRQOL in adolescents. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviors, sleep duration and body mass index-for-age (BMI-for-age) and HRQOL among high school Tehranian students.Methods: A total of 465 high school students (48.8 % girls) were recruited from three different socio-economic zones in Tehran. The BMI-for-age was determined and physical activity and HRQOL were assessed using validated questionnaires including Quantification de l'Activite Physique en Altitude Chez les Enfants (QAPACE) and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) respectively.Results: Over one third of students (38.5 %) were either overweight or obese. The means of all self- and parent-reported HRQOL scores were significantly lower in girls, compared to boys, except for the parent-reported social functioning subscale. Mean hours of daily sleeping were significantly higher in girls, compared to boys (8.16 ± 1.27 vs. 7.73 ± 1.22 respectively; p < 0.05). Both girls and boys spent more time on sedentary activities than engaging in sport activities. During school and vacation periods, boys had significantly higher daily energy expenditure (DEE) compared to girls (p < 0.05). Only DEE during school period had a significant inverse correlation with BMI-for-age in boys but not girls (r = -0.14, p < 0.05). In addition, self-reported HRQOL scores were significantly associated with weekly hours adolescents spent on videogames/internet, listening to music and reading, watching TV, sports as well as DEE through sex-specific patterns. However according to parents' perspective only weekly hours spent on listening to music and readings and sport activities were significantly associated with their children HRQOL scores.Conclusion: In summary, time spent on physical and sedentary activities were not associated with BMI-for-age, although both of these were associated with the HRQOL of high school students. The potential role of sedentary activities and physical activity should be considered in future interventions aimed at improving HRQOL in adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary Objective This paper investigates the association between behavioural factors and BMI-for-age among early adolescents (10–11 years old) in Hulu Langat district, Selangor. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among 333 primary school students. Body weight and height of the students were measured and their BMI-for-age was calculated. Eating behaviours, energy intake, energy expenditure, physical activity, and screen time were assessed using the Eating Behaviours Questionnaire and a 2-day dietary and physical activity recall, respectively. Data were analysed using multiple linear regression analysis. Results The prevalence of overweight and obesity (28.2%) was about twice the prevalence of thinness (11.1%). The mean energy intake and energy expenditure of the students was 1772 ± 441 kcal/day and 1705 ± 331 kcal/day, respectively. Three in five of the students (60.1%) skipped at least one meal and 98.2% snacked between meals daily. A majority of them (55.3%) were sedentary. Low energy intake ( p < 0.05) and low energy expenditure ( p < 0.05) were associated with high BMI-for-age. Energy expenditure ( β = −0.033) and energy intake ( β = −0.090) significantly explained 65.1% of the variances in BMI-for-age ( F = 119.170, p < 0.05). Conclusion These findings suggested that promoting healthy eating and active lifestyle should be targeted in the prevention and management of obesity among early adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies reported that the age of primary school enrolment is a major driver of educational achievement and adult income, but its impacts on childhood health and nutrition remain largely unknown, particularly in developing countries where childhood stunting and overweight coexist. In Brazil, children are supposed to enrol in primary school the year they turn 6. Using a database of middle school students in Brazil based on a 2015 survey, I implemented an instrumental variables strategy using quasi-exogenous variations in the students' birthdates to isolate the impact of late primary school enrolment (i.e., older than 6 when enrolled) on height-for-age and body mass-for-age indicators. Overall, late enrolment has protective effects against hazardous weight gain (−0.14 z-score unit) but significantly increases the risk of moderate stunting (by 1.5% points). Heterogeneity in family backgrounds may explain these results. Indeed, delayed school enrolment is particularly detrimental for the nutritional status of students from underprivileged settings. The prevalence of child obesity in the Czech Republic has increased in the last several years, especially among school-aged children. While obesity trends are closely monitored in the Czech Republic, very little is known about the dietary habits and exercise behaviors of Czech children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate nutrient intakes and physical activity, as well as identify predictors of BMI-for-age in a sample of Czech school-aged children. Ninety-seven fourth, fifth and sixth graders and their parents from two large Czech cities participated in the study. Two 24-hour recalls provided total amount of energy, fat, percentage of energy derived from fat, dietary fiber, and servings of fruits and vegetables. Physical activity was measured by the Self-administered Physical Activity Checklist (SAPAC). Children consumed less energy and dietary fiber than suggested by Czech dietary recommendations. The proportion of energy that children consumed from fat was 28.5%. Children consumed 1.4 cups of fruit and 1.2 cups of vegetables. Children's physical activity levels fell within the current recommendations. Age was the only significant predictor of higher BMI-for-age. Poor dietary quality may be responsible for increasing rates of child obesity in the Czech Republic. Nutritional professionals in the Czech Republic should focus on increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables, and other high-fiber foods in order to reduce the risk for overweight among Czech children. Lifestyle and disease patterns in Malaysia have changed following rapid economic development. It is important to find out how these changes have affected the nutritional status and health behaviour of the population, especially school children and adolescents. Therefore a survey on school childrens' and adolescents' health behaviours and perception in Kuala Lumpur was initiated. This paper only reports the observed body mass status of the school children. A total of 3620 school children were selected in this survey using the method of multi- stage sampling. The students were surveyed using pre-tested questionnaires while weight and height were measured by the research team in the field. Using the cut-off of BMI-for-age> 95th percentile and <5th percentile for overweight and underweight respectively, there were a total of 7.3% of overweight students and 14.8% of underweight students. When analysed by gender; 7.5% of boys and 7.1% girls were overweight, while 16.2% of the boys and 13.3% of the girls were underweight. The youngest age group (ii years old) had the highest prevalence of underweight as well as overweight. With increasing age, the prevalence of underweight and overweight decreased and more children were in the normal weight range. The overall prevalence of overweight among the three ethnic groups was similar. However the prevalence of underweight was highest among the indian students (24.9%), followed by Malays (18.9%) and Chinese (9.5%) (P <0.001). The results showed that both the problems of under- and over-nutrition co-exist in the capital city of Malaysia. The promotion of healthy eating and physical activities is required to address the problems of under- and over-nutrition in order to build up a strong and healthy nation in the future. A possible role of dietary creatine for ensuring proper growth and development remains unknown. The main aim of this cross-sectional study was to quantify the amount of creatine consumed through regular diet among U.S. children and adolescents aged 2 to 19 years and investigate the relationship between creatine intake and growth indicators, using data from the 2001–2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We included data for NHANES 2001–2002 respondents (4291 participants, 2133 boys and 2158 girls) aged 2 to 19 years at the time of screening, who provided valid dietary information and examination measures (standing height and weight). Individual values for total grams of creatine consumed per day for each participant were computed using the average amount of creatine (3.88 g/kg) across all sources of meat-based foods. All participants were categorized for height-for-age and BMI-for-age categories. The average daily intake of creatine across the whole sample was 1.07 ± 1.07 g (95% CI, from 1.04 to 1.10). Height, weight, and BMI were significantly different across creatine quartiles (p < 0.001), with all measures significantly higher in the 4th quartile of creatine intake (≥1.5 g/day) than those in other quartiles (p < 0.05). The participants from the 3rd quartile of creatine intake (0.84–1.49 g/day) were significantly different from others with respect to having lower rates of normal stature and higher rates of tall stature (p < 0.05). Each additional 0.1 g of creatine consumed per day increases height by 0.60 cm (simple model) or 0.30 cm (adjusted model). The daily intake of creatine from a regular diet in taller children and adolescents was higher than in shorter peers aged 2–19 years. Considering the double burden of malnutrition in Malaysia, data on malnourished children living in welfare homes are limited. This study aimed to determine the body weight status of children living in welfare homes and its associated factors. A total of 307 children aged 7–17 years old living in 15 selected welfare homes completed a standardized questionnaire, and their body weight and height were measured by trained researchers. There were 54.4% orphans, 23.8% abandoned children, and 21.8% children from problematic families. There were 51.5% boys and 48.5% girls; 52.4% were Malays, followed by 31.3% Indians, 12.7% Chinese, and 3.6% from other ethnic groups. The prevalence of overweight and obesity (23.1%) was higher than the prevalence of thinness (8.5%). In bivariate analyses, socio-demographic factors of age (p = 0.003), sex (p = 0.0001), ethnicity (p = 0.001), and welfare home enrollment status (p = 0.003), and psychological factors of self-esteem (p = 0.003), body shape dissatisfaction (p = 0.0001), and underestimation of body weight status (p = 0.002), were significantly associated with body mass index (BMI)-for-age. In the multiple linear regression analysis, children who were either Malays (β = 0.492) or Chinese (β = 0.678), with a status of being abandoned (β = 0.409), with body shape dissatisfaction (β = 0.457), and underestimated body weight status (β = 0.628) significantly explained 39.7% of the variances in higher BMI-for-age (F = 39.550; p < 0.05). Besides socio-demographic background, the current findings emphasized the importance of incorporating body image perception in an obesity prevention intervention program in welfare homes.
