The research aims to assess the living conditions of boarding houses around the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Internal dimensions, light, ventilation and room space were used to measure living conditions in boarding houses. The study employed a mixed-method approach to gather data. Descriptive and content analysis methods were used to analyse the data collected using a purposive sample of 70 boarding houses and interviews with 10 owners. The findings of the study revealed mixed results regarding the living conditions of boarding houses. Overcrowding is a major issue that led to most of the boarding houses failing to meet the minimum space requirements for tenants, leading to compromised living conditions. The implementation of the first promotional measures by the Peruvian government for the hotel industry is analyzed from the perspective of the interest in natural locations and the lodging needs of the city of Lima in the early 20th century. Concrete outcomes of these measures, their characteristics, and the emergence of the first hotels considered modern are presented. This aims to contribute to a better understanding of the inception of this type of lodging in Latin American countries, the associated issues, and the conditions of their development. The selection of boarding houses for work or study often leaves potential residents uncertain about choosing the right boarding house to meet their daily personal needs. Due to the varying prices and facilities offered by each boarding house, potential residents need to consider the prices and various facilities provided by each boarding house. Therefore, a recommendation system is needed to assist potential residents in deciding on the right boarding house according to their daily needs. This system is created using the Simple Additive Weighting method, which can help potential residents in decision-making through ranking obtained by multiplying the matrix of each criteria weight with the available alternative values. The development of this recommendation system uses MYSQL database, HTML, PHP, and JavaScript programming. The testing of the recommendation system using a Likert scale resulted in an average total interpretation score of 76.3%, indicating that users have a positive response to this recommendation system. This mixed method case study examined potential influences of social agents or immediate environments on individuals’ metacognition. Via quantitative methodologies, 122 pre-service teachers’ metacognition was measured by the Turkish Metacognitive Awareness Inventory, and metacognitive components did not show any variations across majors, locations of previous studies, the highest degree of education in the family, frequently communicated friends, and regions. Regression analyses revealed that friends were a significant predictor for metacognition. Also, focus group interviews were analyzed thematically via deductive codes regarding the theory of metacognition. Findings confirmed that friends may support individual metacognition at all levels, metacognitive knowledge, regulation, and experiences through cooperation, modeling, reflections, discussions, feedback, and peer evaluation. Pre-service teachers’ engagement on the social media may also support their regulatory strategies due to models’ task performances or by their reflecting upon those performances. Teachers and family may support metacognitive knowledge, specifically career goals via expectations, anecdotes, and experiences. On the other hand, schools and the Turkish culture may impose some limitations on the youth, and they may engage in reflection and self-questioning to manoeuvre negative experiences or conflicts. The COVID-19 outbreak in the Philippines forced schools to close. Many Filipino students were stranded in their dormitories and boarding houses due to government-imposed lockdowns. As the study's impetus, the researchers explored the phenomenon of stranded students during a pandemic. A transcendental phenomenological inquiry was conducted in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, to disclose the experiences of six stranded students. Stranded students' lifeworld throughout the lockdown was documented through phenomenological interviews. The phenomenological reduction technique was used to transcribe and analyze the data. Provisional codes were used to classify critical statements into themes for the initial analysis of the interview data. The research revealed the themes of (a) groping in the dark, (b) journeying towards the light, and (c) welcoming the breaking dawn. The various stages of reality in the life of the stranded students are shown in these topics. They relate the story of how their confinement experience taught them to be resilient, which covers resilience as a process. The paper discusses numerous pedagogical implications of the phenomenon. The indicators regarding the quantification of the tourist circulation such as the average number of tourists (Nt) in the touristy and agro-touristy boarding houses from Suceava County by types of tourists had average values for the 10 years analyzed (2010-2019), of 117.37 Romanian tourists and 6.64 foreign tourists in the touristy pensions and 143.50 Romanian tourists respectively 9.86 foreign tourists in the agro-touristy pensions. The average length of stay (Ds) in tourist pensions and agro-tourist pensions in Suceava County by types of tourists in the same period analyzed (2010-2019) indicates average values of 2.15 days for Romanian tourists and 2.24 days for foreign tourists in tourist pensions respectively 2.24 days for Romanian tourists and 2.31 days for foreign tourists in agro-tourist pensions. The density of tourist traffic (D) in tourist pensions and agro-tourist pensions by localities in Suceava County in the analyzed period (2010-2019) indicates average values of 0.25 tourists in tourist pensions and 0.47 tourists in agro-tourist pensions. The article deals with the situation of providing studying rooms and hostels for students. Difficult economic situation in the country caused slow growth of the studying space. It has been proved that rooms unfit for the teachinglearning process were given to institutions. The author having used rich database proves that it was too difficult to provide lodging for students, especially in the 1920s. Most institutions of higher education did not have their own hostels. Part of student dwellings was in the buildings unfit for living. It has been shown that living conditions were improving gradually during the 30s of the 20th century. The greater part of hostels was poorly furnished and there was not enough linen. Studentship living in boarding-schools had to follow the rules of residence. In 1786, Betty Trifle, a woman the townspeople described as "furiously insane," arrived in Uxbridge, MA. Lacking family, property, town settlement, and the "wherewithall to support herself," the Uxbridge selectmen arranged for Trifle to be boarded with local residents Nathan and Nancy Tyler. For the next twenty-three years, the Tylers and other townspeople housed, clothed, fed, and nursed Trifle—sending receipts for their expenses and labor to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which issued them annual disbursements. Trifle's experience of poverty and disability was not unusual in eighteenth-century Massachusetts nor was the town-provided but state-funded care she received. Drawing on nearly two thousand requests for reimbursement from townspeople and selectmen to the Massachusetts General Court between 1786 and 1799, this paper recovers the extensive system of boarding sick and disabled "strangers," or people without settlement rights, in the homes of town residents—a method of poor relief that historians have almost entirely overlooked. Accounts of the intimate caregiving and receiving relationships between boarders and hosts—which often continued for years and bridged racial, ethnic, and social divides—suggest that the bounds of eighteenth-century Massachusetts communities were flexible and capacious in ways that scholars have not fully recognized. At the same time, the labor associated with nursing ailing nonresidents laid bare the hierarchies of gender, race, class, and ability within these communities, corroborating scholarship on the gendered and racialized dynamics of care. In the past few decades, interest in migration and mobility in and out of Early Modern cities has greatly increased. In particular, the reception of newcomers has turned out to be fundamentally important to cultural and economic growth. However, attention to the history of migration has mainly focused on particular foreign communities and their collective assimilation within the city fabric. This contribution, instead, concentrates on Venetian spaces for urban hospitality more broadly. The paper analyses different ways in which an Early Modern port city managed migration and mobility within its urban spaces, questioning how institutions, legislations and policies affected social actors’ residential patterns, and vice versa. The aim is to highlight the place of women within the hospitality industry and to underline the role of gender relations in these spaces. The use of different types of sources and distinct approaches allows for an enriched analysis of this complex subject, approaching the same phenomena from multiple perspectives. James Joyce's Dubliners betrays a narrative innovative tendency towards the restriction of point of view, which means the narration tends to unfold through the character's point of view without omniscient interference. After examining the short stories in the context of their creation, we assert that Joyce's exile and Dubliners's censorship mostly account for this formal innovation. Further exploration shows that the restriction of point of view is actually a narrative strategy Joyce deploys to convey his ambiguous and ambivalent feelings towards his homeland and compatriots triggered by his exilic experience. This article addresses Black women's economic roles in nineteenth‐century Nantucket, Massachusetts, during the island's ascendency as the center of a global whaling industry. Much of the existing scholarship highlights men's participation in the whaling industry, while Black women's contributions remain obscured. I use two main lines of evidence to interpret Black women's working lives: census records and ceramic vessels recovered from the Boston‐Higginbotham House, a historic residence that was occupied by two Black families for almost 200 years. Changes in vessel forms over time indicate that Black women were increasingly finding ways to supplement the income of their spouses. I argue that Black women played an integral role in their household's economy, and in supporting the whaling industry, especially as boardinghouse operators. This form of entrepreneurship also served to expand Black families' opportunities for building social networks and strengthening the Black community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the ubiquity of boardinghouses in the United States throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, little historical research has been done about their social significance. Using census data and architectural analysis, this article examines boardinghouses in the Southside neighborhood of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, between 1880 and 1920. Architectural analysis indicates the strategies boardinghouse keepers used to commodify domestic space, including rearticulating the parlor and dining rooms. Also, demographic analysis reveals that in addition to housing a local workforce, Southside boardinghouses contained the elderly, widows and widowers, and young children separated from their families. These populations indicate the vital role of boardinghouses in supplementing social services. In addition, ethnic relationships between boarders and boardinghouse keepers point to the importance of the institution in facilitating immigration and assimilation. These additional social functions demonstrate the significance of boarding to the Southside neighborhood and can be a model for study in other communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
