Background: The Neonatal Eating Assessment Tool—Mixed Breastfeeding and Bottle-feeding (NeoEAT—Mixed Feeding) is a parent-report assessment of symptoms of problematic feeding in infants who are feeding by both breast and bottle. Purpose: To establish reference values for the NeoEAT—Mixed Feeding and evaluate factors that contribute to symptoms of problematic feeding in healthy, full-term infants. Methodology: Parents of 409 infants less than 7 months old completed an online survey. Median and percentile scores are presented for infants aged 0–2, 2–4, 4–6, and 6–7 months old. Results: Neonatal Eating Assessment Tool—Mixed Feeding total score and scores for the Gastrointestinal Tract Function and Energy & Physiologic Stability subscales decreased with increasing infant age. Infant Regulation and Feeding Flexibility subscale scores remained stable over time, whereas Sensory Responsiveness subscale scores increased with increasing infant age. Infants with more gastrointestinal and gastroesophageal symptoms had higher NeoEAT—Mixed Feeding total scores. Conclusions: In healthy, full-term infants, symptoms of problematic feeding generally improve over the first 7 months, with the exception of symptoms related to sensory responsiveness. Gastrointestinal and gastroesophageal reflux symptoms are related to symptoms of problematic feeding. Implications: The reported reference values may be used to identify infants in need of further assessment, referral, and intervention. In healthy, full-term infants with concurrent gastrointestinal symptoms and problematic feeding, interventions targeted at gastrointestinal symptoms may help to improve symptoms of problematic feeding as well. Establishing healthy feeding habits during infancy is crucial for optimal growth. However, certain parental feeding and cultural practices might hinder the development of children's healthy eating behaviours. This research explored responsive feeding practices among migrant mothers in Australia. Semi‐structured telephone interviews were conducted in their native language with 20 Arabic and 20 Mongolian‐speaking migrant mothers with children under 2 years old or currently pregnant. Thematic analysis was conducted using the framework method. Both cultural groups followed a variety of feeding practices, including on demand responsive feeding or structured schedules. Arabic‐speaking mothers tended to demonstrate responsive feeding practices more frequently than Mongolian‐speaking mothers, except for those using formula feeding, who consistently followed a fixed feeding routine. When introducing solid foods, mothers from both groups often overlooked their babies' hunger and satiety cues, frequently pressuring their children to finish their entire plate. One cited reason for this was the challenge parents faced in identifying such cues. Arabic‐speaking mothers often supplemented with formula top‐ups after introducing solid foods, due to the belief that breast milk or solid foods alone might not sufficiently nourish their infants. Additionally, some Arabic‐speaking mothers used food‐based rewards to encourage eating. Mongolian mothers expressed a cultural preference for chubby babies, a potential reason why they may have been inclined to pressure‐feed their children. Moreover, both groups reported using digital devices to distract their children during meals. This study highlights the necessity of tailoring future resources and services related to responsive feeding practices to accommodate diverse literacy levels and cultural backgrounds. Background: Feeding skill acquisition is commonly a limiting factor determining when an infant born prematurely can be discharged. Purpose: This study aimed to determine if the addition of a novel feeding progression algorithm (combination of objective data from a suck measurement device and slow flow/low variability nipples) to current neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) standards could decrease feeding-related length of stay (primary outcome). We hypothesized that by timing the initiation of oral feedings to coincide with adequate sensory-motor skill development, feeding-related length of stay may be decreased. Methods: This was a prospective intervention study, with a historical control cohort, of infants born less than 30 weeks' gestational age without comorbidities affecting feeding skill acquisition at a Regional Level III-S NICU at a women and infant's hospital in Louisiana. A novel feeding progression algorithm utilized objective assessment of sucking to determine progression in nipple flow rates with slow flow/low variability nipples (flow rates from 0 to 9 mL/min) for infants receiving intervention (n = 18). Thirty-six controls who did not receive the feeding progression algorithm were identified via electronic medical record retrospective chart review. Results: Eighteen completed the study. Compared to the control group, infants receiving feeding interventions had delayed sequencing initiation, extended time between initially off positive pressure ventilation and initiation of sequencing, and decreased feeding-related length of stay, with similar total length of stay. Implications for Practice and Research: This study adds to existing research supporting the effectiveness of novel feeding progression algorithms and interventions to support the health and outcomes of infants born prematurely. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to identify the P-bottle feeding techniques systematically organized by Ms. Kumagai, an expert in nursing care for children with a cleft lip and/or palate (CLP), which were developed as she gained expertise in feeding affected children. Methods: We recruited three nurses who had mastered the Kumagai method for feeding with a P-bottle. Through analysis of participants' voices and videos during interviews, we focused on aspects such as dealing with a closed mouth, inserting the nipple in cases of unilateral and bilateral CLP, dealing with the child's movements after insertion, and key considerations when squeezing the bottle. Results: The interview analyses revealed numerous techniques used by nurses to manage the difficulties encountered while feeding children, ensuring successful provision of nourishment. Specifically, the nurses employed techniques such as placing the nipple along the midline of the child's tongue and varying the application of force on the nipple depending on the cleft type. The nurses reported that the objectives of these techniques were to prevent ulcer formation and encourage the use of the tongue, simulating original feeding movements. Conclusions: We explored feeding techniques and the management of associated challenges. Our results suggest that the "Kumagai Method" could be valuable in improving feeding practices. ObjectiveTo explore the association between feeding methods at 1 month postpartum and maternal sleep status. MethodsFrom November 2021 to September 2022, a total of 757 postpartum women at 1 month postpartum in Nanjing, Chengdu, Xi′an, Wuhan, Guangzhou, and Qingdao were surveyed by face-to-face to collect information on infant feeding methods and sleep status of 1 monthpostpartum women. The study subjects were divided into four groups according to the feeding methods: (1) exclusive breastfeeding, (2) exclusive breastfeeding/bottle-feeding, (3) mixed feeding – breastfeeding, and (4) mixed feeding – breastfeeding/bottle-feeding. A generalized linear model was used to analyze the association between feeding method and sleep duration of postpartum women. A multinomial logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between feeding method and the risk of insufficient or excessive total sleep duration and subjective sleep quality in postpartum women. ResultsThe number of women in the exclusive breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding/bottle-feeding, mixed feeding – breastfeeding, and mixed feeding – breastfeeding/bottle-feeding groups was 263, 173, 152, and 169, respectively, and the total sleep duration was (8.4 ± 1.7), (7.8 ± 1.5), (8.3 ± 1.8), and (8.1 ± 1.7) hours, respectively. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, compared with mothers who exclusively breastfed, total sleep duration and night sleep duration were reduced by 0.7 and 0.5 hours, respectively, in mothers who exclusively breastfed/bottle-fed and mothers who mixed fed – breastfed/bottle-fed (P < 0.05). The risk of insufficient total sleep duration (< 7 h) was significantly increased in the exclusive breastfeeding/bottle-feeding group, with an adjusted OR (95%CI) of 2.07 (1.16 – 3.72). The risk of poor or very poor subjective sleep quality was significantly increased in the exclusive breastfeeding/bottle-feeding group, mixed feeding – breastfeeding group, and mixed feedin – breastfeeding/bottle-feeding group, with adjusted OR (95%CI) of 3.11 (1.52 – 6.35), 2.31 (1.02 – 5.22), and 3.00 (1.32 – 6.80), respectively. ConclusionPostpartum women who exclusively breastfed had longer sleep duration and the best subjective sleep quality.

Background/Objectives: This study identified bottle-feeding techniques for infants with feeding difficulties. Methods: Between December 2021 and April 2022, a survey was distributed to nurses with at least 5 years of experience in caring for infants at 1109 hospitals in Japan. The questionnaire included open-ended questions regarding preparation before bottle-feeding, methods of nipple insertion, methods of assisting with sucking, and criteria for continuing bottle-feeding. The responses were classified according to semantic similarity. Results: In total, 514 valid responses were received. The respondents had an average of 19.16 years of experience as a nurse or midwife. The most frequently used nipples for infants with feeding difficulties were the Combi Breastfeeding Model, Pigeon Weak Sucking Nipple, and Bean Stalk Nipple. Preparation before bottle-feeding consisted of six categories, including determining the timing of feeding and stimulation to promote wakeup. Nipple insertion methods consisted of four categories, such as assisted opening of the mouth, nipple insertion, and nipple insertion depth. Methods of assisting with sucking were divided into four categories, including encouraging sucking ability from around the mouth and matching the infant's sucking pace. The criteria for continuing bottle-feeding spanned three categories, including willingness to suck and ensuring necessary nutrition. Conclusions: The variety of survey responses describes the current state of bottle-feeding technologies. A combination of several techniques indicated that feeding strategies may lead to effective and appropriate feeding. The nurses continued feeding based on an assessment of the infant's acceptance. Aim: This study aimed to determine whether the Kumagai method could be followed by watching an instructional video and to compare the feeding actions of specialists and the general population. Materials and Methods: Eleven adults from diverse backgrounds were recruited and asked to feed a baby doll using a bottle feeder with a long nipple, and their actions were recorded. Then, they watched a 2.5-min instructional video of the Kumagai method and were asked to bottle-feed again. Video recordings of the participants were used to evaluate whether their actions followed the Kumagai method. Differences in the feeding actions of the specialists and participants were determined from still images in the videos. The McNemar test was used to analyze the differences between the participants' actions before and after. The Kruskal–Wallis test was also used to determine differences between the actions of participants and specialists. Results: Feeding movements significantly improved after watching the video. Participants' actions, which differed significantly from those of the specialists, were evident in "the angle of the nipple at the moment the nipple was brought close to the lips" and "the angle change of the nipple from the lip to the mouth". Conclusions: Watching our short instructional video was effective in improving the technique of the Kumagai method; however, it is insufficient for feeding a real child with cleft lip and palate. Background: Breastfeeding confers both short-term and long-term benefits to the child. It reduces infections and mortality, improves mental and motor development. Infant feeding practices have a major role in determining the nutritional status of a child. Materials and Methods: The study is a cross-sectional design conducted at the Immunization Clinic of GIMS and UHTC in Gadag. A total of 400 infants and young children aged 0-24 months were selected through convenient sampling. The inclusion criteria consisted of children aged 0-24 months whose parents gave consent to participate, while children over 2 years old were excluded. The study period was from April to July, 2018. The study instruments included a baby weighing machine to measure weight and a measuring tape to assess height. Results: The study reveals that the majority of children fall within the age range of 0-6 years (45.7%) and 7-12 years (46.7%). There is a slight female predominance, with 56.0% of participants being female and 44.0% male. Education levels among mothers vary significantly, with the highest percentage having completed high school (44.4%). The distribution of families shows a diverse socio-economic background, with the largest segments being middle class (30.1%). An overwhelming 86.8% of women attended more than three antenatal care (ANC) visits during their pregnancies, indicating a commendable level of adherence to prenatal care. The study also found that there is no statistically significant association between the mode of milk feeding (breastfeeding or bottle-feeding) and the weight-for-age of the children in the study. Overall, the findings suggest a diverse demographic profile among participants, with a strong emphasis on maternal education and prenatal care. The study highlights the importance of early childhood development and the role of maternal health in influencing child outcomes. Conclusion: In our study there was no much difference noted in nutrition status among bottle- and breast-fed children, but there was a significant difference with number of infection episodes among bottle- and breast-fed children. Background: The Infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices directly affect the health, development and nutritional status of children under two years of age. However, IYCF counseling is one of the Community Health and Nutrition Volunteers (CHNVs) activities provided, which may contribute to improving the IYCF knowledge and practice among mothers. Since establishment of the CHNVs program in Yemen, its outcome has never been evaluated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the role of CHNVs in improving the IYCF knowledge and practice among mothers in Hajjah governorate. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study design was conducted in Bani Qais and Al-Maghrabah districts, Hajjah governorate between January and April 2023. A three-stage cluster sampling method was used to select districts, volunteer villages and households. A total of 926 mothers were interviewed. A pre-tested structured questionnaire was used to collect data. SPSS 26 was used for data analysis. The multinomial logistic regression and Chi-Square test were used to compare the IYCF knowledge and practices among mothers between the volunteer and non-volunteer villages. Odds Ratio (OR) with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) were calculated. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mothers in volunteer villages had significantly better breastfeeding and complementary feeding (CF) knowledge than mothers in non-volunteer villages. The OR of having good and moderate knowledge of breastfeeding were 3.5 (95%CI: 2.4–5.2) and 1.6 (95% CI: 1.2–2.2), respectively. The OR for good and moderate knowledge of CF were 1.7 (95% CI: 1.1–2.7) and 2.2 (95% CI: 1.5-3.0), respectively. Moreover, there is a statistically significant association in prevalence of Exclusively breastfed for the first two days after birth (EBF2D), Mixed milk feeding under six months (MixMF) and Bottle feeding 0–23 months (BoF) between volunteer and non-volunteer villages [(OR = 1.4, 95% CI: 1.0-1.8), (OR = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2–0.8) and (OR = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.4–0.7), respectively]. Conclusions: The study found that CHNVs play a significant effect in improving the breastfeeding and CF knowledge, and prevalence of EBF2D, MixMF and BoF practices among mothers in their villages compared to non-volunteer villages. Aim: This study explores the experiences and perspectives of women with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 on infant feeding. Subject and methods: Women with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 have lower rates of initiating, maintaining and exclusive breastfeeding than women with a BMI < 25 kg/m2. There is limited qualitative research on this topic, particularly for women living with overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2-29.9 kg/m2). Eighteen women with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 living in the North East of England and an infant under eighteen months of age participated in a semi-structured interview concerning infant feeding practices during May and June 2021. Participants were recruited through social media platforms. An inductive thematic analysis was undertaken to analyse the interview data. Results: Two overarching themes were identified: lower confidence and a perceived negative judgement from others for living with higher weight. These themes reduced women's confidence in their ability to breastfeed and led to negative experiences or avoidance of public feeding. Difficulties with latching and positioning in relation to body shape also reduced confidence in breastfeeding further. Due to these barriers, women felt that they required additional, tailored support to achieve breastfeeding. Conclusion: Improving breastfeeding support for women with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 requires a whole systems approach involving education systems, healthcare professionals and the community. Background: Bottle feeding should be avoided since it interferes with optimal breastfeeding and it causes diarrheal-related morbidity and mortality. Despite the WHO's recommendation that children to avoid bottle feeding, it is still widely practiced in developing countries including our country, Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the spatial variations, and determinants of bottle feeding among children aged 0–23 months using the recent demographic and health survey data for Ethiopia. Methods: A secondary data analysis was conducted using the 2019 Ethiopian mini demographic and health survey data. The total weighted sample of 2067 children aged 0–23 months was included in this study. Spatial analysis was done to identify the hotspot areas of bottle feeding among children in Ethiopia. Multivariable multilevel logistic regression was used to identify predictors of bottle feeding. The spatial analysis was done using ArcGIS 10.7 and Sat Scan 9.6 software. Result: The prevalence of bottle feeding among children aged 0–23 months was 21.52% with 95% CI(19.80%, 23.34%). Age of the child from 6–11 months, and 12–23 months age, having secondary and above education [AOR = 2.09; 95%CI; 1.31, 3.32], being from middle and rich household [AOR = 2.14; 95%CI; 1.37, 3.34] and [AOR = 2.30; 95%CI; 1.46, 3.63], and twin birth [AOR = 8.06; 95%CI; 2.87, 22.58] were significant predictors of bottle feeding. Hotspot areas of bottle feeding were observed in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Harari, and Afar regions of Ethiopia. Conclusion: Bottle feeding practice was found to be spatially clustered in Ethiopia. Education, wealth index, parity, and child's age were significant predictors of bottle feeding. Hotspot areas of bottle feeding were observed in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Harari, and Afar regions. Special attention should be directed towards mothers residing in hotspot areas, educated mothers, mothers of multiple births, and mothers from rich households through community education programs focused on child feeding practices to reduce the practice of bottle-feeding in Ethiopia. Tooth decay remains one of the most common preventable oral health concerns in children. After birth, advice to caregivers predominantly focuses on medical health with little attention paid to dental health. Before discharge from the maternity unit and during future hospital and community appointments, opportunistic dental advice should be provided by midwives, nurses and health visitors where possible, with the aim of preventing early onset dental disease. Registering with a dentist at birth is crucial due to long NHS dental waiting lists. Simple advice on toothbrushing should be offered, including brushing twice a day with a soft toothbrush using an age-appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste. Mothers should be provided with information on the benefits of breastfeeding for oral health alongside tailored preventive care. Appropriate advice on bottle-feeding and weaning is required, including minimising the use of added sugar, drinking from free-flow cups after six months of age, and discouraging the use of milk bottles at bedtime and in general after one year of age. The aim of this study was to assess the rate of breastfeeding initiation and continuation among women with epilepsy treated in a tertiary care center in the Makkah region. Methods: All women with epilepsy treated in the epilepsy clinic at King Abdullah Medical City from 2019 to June 2023 were interviewed by phone. Data collected included patients' demographics, type and control of epilepsy, number of antiseizure medications (ASMs), and obstetric history. Results: Forty-eight patients were included in the study. A total of 32 (66.7%) were more than 30 years old, and 41 (85.4%) were from urban areas. A total of 22 (45.8%) received only one antiepileptic drug, 18 (37.5%) received two drugs, and 8 (16.7%) received three or more drugs. The majority (68.6%) of patients practiced breastfeeding. Breastfeeding lasted 6 months or longer for 12.1% of mothers. Bottle feeding was needed for 72.9% of patients. Breastfeeding was reported by significantly more patients (73.2%) from urban areas versus 42.9% of those from rural areas (P = 0.043). Also, 81.8% of patients on one ASM practiced breastfeeding, compared to 62.5% on more than two ASMs (P = 0.048). Other significant factors related to breastfeeding were not having a seizure during pregnancy (81.8%– 57.7%, P = 0.049) and a normal vaginal delivery (81.3%– 43.8%, P = 0.008). Conclusion: The rate of breastfeeding among women with epilepsy in the Makkah region is low. Several factors, including the number of ASMs, seizure control during pregnancy, spontaneous vaginal delivery, and being from an urban area, were significantly related to breastfeeding behavior among these women. ABSTRACT Background Child‐feeding practices, particularly breastfeeding, significantly impact children's health and survival. However, bottle feeding, although historically practiced, presents numerous disadvantages affecting optimal child nutrition and health. Despite World Health Organisation and The United Nations Children's Fund recommendations against bottle feeding, it remains prevalent globally, affecting roughly 59% of infants worldwide and 85% in Australia by 5 months of age. Objective This study aims to assess the prevalence and determinants of bottle feeding among mothers of children under five globally. Methods This systematic review and meta‐analysis adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis guidelines. We comprehensively searched electronic databases for English‐language articles published between 2014 and 2024. The quality of studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklist. Data were analysed in STATA version 17, including summary tables, narrative descriptions, forest plots, and statistical heterogeneity and publication bias assessment. Results The pooled prevalence of bottle feeding among mothers was 57%. Subgroup analysis revealed higher prevalence in larger sample sizes (> 2151) and lower prevalence in smaller ones. Factors significantly associated with bottle feeding included mode of delivery (OR = 1.953; 95%, CI: 1.272, 2.635), child hospitalisation (OR = 1.984, CI: 1.593, 2.376), mother's occupation (OR = 1.579; CI: 1.467, 1.690), post‐natal care (OR = 2.965; CI: (1.358, 4.571), age of children (OR = 2.836; CI: 1.895, 3.777), place of residence (OR = 1.423; CI: 0.994, 1.852), and mother's education (OR = 3.366, CI: 1.949, 4.783). Conclusion Efforts to promote optimal child‐feeding practices should address the identified determinants, emphasising the importance of breastfeeding and providing support to mothers, especially those facing challenges such as cesarean delivery, child hospitalisation, and maternal employment.

Abstract Background Avoidance of bottle feeding is recommended as it interferes with optimal suckling behavior, is difficult to keep clean, and is an important route for the transmission of pathogens. However, there is a current shift towards breastfeeding for a short period and the introduction of bottle feeding in both the developed and developing worlds. Bottle-feeding practice and its individual- and community-level determinants are not addressed in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, this study aimed to fill this gap and assess the pooled prevalence and associated factors of bottle feeding among mothers of children less than 23 months of age. Methods Data from the recent demographic and health surveys of 20 countries in sub-Saharan Africa conducted between 2015 and 2022 were used. Background: Poor subjective sleep quality, depressive symptoms and fatigue occur frequently in postpartum. However, the dynamics of their respective associations from prepartum throughout the maternity period in function of baby feeding method have not been fully elucidated. Methods: Prospective, longitudinal study using validated questionnaires probing for sleep quality, insomnia, fatigue and depressive symptoms at 35–37 weeks of gestation and at 2, 8 and 12 weeks postpartum in the obstetric departments of two Flemish hospitals. Somers'd ordinal correlation was used for correlations between the results of questionnaires (ratio variables) and the feeding method variable (an ordinal variable); T tests (normal data) or Mann Whitney (non normal data) tests for equality of means; ordinal regression ('Proportional odds model') to investigate the predictive value of parameters at one moment on the feeding method choice at a later moment; logistic regression to investigate the predictive value of parameters on later change of feeding method. Results: 188 women indicating a choice for either bottle or breastfeeding in prepartum (27–35 weeks' gestation) were included. Higher fatigue assessed through the Fatigue Severity Scale within late pregnancy was moderately associated with primary bottle feeding choice. Fatigue decreased at early and late postpartum in bottle feeding (-0.38 ± 1.04; p =.110 and − 0.31 ± 1.01; p =.642 respectively), but remained unchanged from late pregnancy through early and late postpartum in breastfeeding (0.04 ± 1.21; p =.110 and − 0.27 ± 0.96; p =.642 respectively), resulting in similar fatigue in both feeding methods in early through late postpartum. There were no differences in sleep quality or insomnia symptoms at all time points. Presence of postpartum depressive symptoms were associated with early switching to bottle feeding (Somers' d correlation 0.11 (p =.021). The impact of disease-modifying therapy ranges from cure to no impact with a wide range of intermediates. In cases where the intermediate group reaches a plateau after the acquisition of some muscle strength, it is necessary to set a functional level appropriate for increased motor power and establish a long-term exercise plan to maintain it. As the disease status stabilizes and the life span increases, early nonsurgical interventions are required, such as using a standing frame to prevent joint contracture, applying a spinal brace at the early stage of scoliosis, and maintaining sitting postures that exaggerate lumbar lordosis. In cases where scoliosis and hip displacement occur and progress even after conservative managements are implemented, early referral to surgery should be considered. Oromotor activity and swallowing function are influenced not only by the effects of disease-modifying drugs, but also by post-birth experience and training. Therefore, although the feeding tube cannot be removed, it is necessary to make efforts to simulate the infant feeding development while maintaining partial oral feeding. Since the application period of non-invasive ventilators has increased, it has become more important to prevent long-term complications such as facial abrasion, skin allergy, orthodontic deformities, and maxillary flattening caused by the interface. The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the efficacy of supplementing bovine colostrum replacer during weaning to reduce intestinal permeability and improve gain. For this experiment, 65 calves were enrolled and housed individually until 70 d of age. Calves were fed milk replacer (150 g/L) 3 times daily with 9, 10.5, 11.25, and 12 L/d offered from d 1 to 7, 8 to 14, 15 to 21, 22 to 56, respectively. Calves were weaned over 8 d from d 57 to 64, receiving a total of 7.8 L in 2 meals per day from d 57 to 60 and 3.8 L/d in 1 feeding from d 61 to 64. At d 57, calves were blocked by birth weight and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments, equal in ME, which were fed once daily during weaning from d 57 to 64: control (CON; n = 31 calves): 3.8 L of milk replacer (150 g/L) fed by nipple bottle, or colostrum supplementation (COL; n = 34): a mixture of 1 L of bovine colostrum replacer (125 g/L) and 3 L of milk replacer (150 g/L) with 3.8 L of of the mixture fed by nipple bottle. Serum IgG was measured within 48 h of birth and BW was taken at d 0, 57, 60, 64, 70, 77, and 84. Starter intake and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) score were measured daily from d 50 to 70, and fecal consistency was examined daily from d 56 to 70. Serum BHB and lung consolidation were evaluated at d 57, 64, and 70, and intestinal permeability was assessed by recovery of chromium-EDTA, lactulose, and d -mannitol from plasma after oral administration at d 56 and 65. Body weight had no difference between treatment groups at the start of weaning, but COL were 2.79 kg (95% CI: 0.90–4.68) and 2.76 kg (95% CI: 0.86–4.65) heavier than CON at d 77 and 84, respectively. Additionally, COL tended to gain 100.00 g/d more than CON calves (95% CI: −10.41–207.13) from d 57 to 84. No differences were observed in any of the other variables measured. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the bottle nipple flow rate of liquid barium sulfate of three different International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) thicknesses (i.e., thin, slightly thick, and mildly thick) and compare flow rates of infant formula thickened with Gelmix or oatmeal cereal to comparable thicknesses. Method: Liquid preparations were IDDSI flow tested to determine thickness. Nipple flow rate testing was conducted using 50 ml of liquid in a 4-oz Dr. Brown's bottle with the venting system in place. Liquid was extracted using a breast pump. The weight of liquid extracted was converted to flow in milliliters per minute using the density of the liquid in grams per milliliter. Results: Across nipple types and liquid thicknesses, the flow rate through the bottle nipple with formula was faster than with barium of the same thickness. Thickening with oatmeal cereal resulted in clogging of the nipple. Pulverizing the oatmeal did not improve clogging but did impact caloric density of the formula. Conclusions: Bottle nipple flow rates of liquid barium sulfate are not consistent with flow rates of thin infant formula or formula thickened with Gelmix to the same IDDSI thickness. These findings may impact the safety of oral feeding for some infants. Parents and clinicians need to be aware of clogging with oatmeal cereal as a factor that could contribute to variability in flow as well as difficulty extracting fluid for nutrition. This cross-sectional study employs structural equation modelling (sEM) to explore both direct and indirect effects of parental level of education and child individual factors on the length-for-age outcomes in children aged 6–24 months assisted by the Bolsa Família Program in the State of Alagoas. A total of 1448 children were analysed by the sEM technique. A negative standardised direct effect (sDE) of the children's younger age (sDE: −0·06; P = 0·017), the use of bottle feeding (sDE: −0·11; P < 0·001) and lack of a minimum acceptable diet (sDE: −0·09; P < 0·001) on the length-for-age indicator was found. Being female (SDE: 0·08; P = 0·001), a higher birth weight (SDE: 0·33; P < 0·001), being ever breastfed (sdE: 0·07; P = 0·004) and a higher level of parental education (SDE: 0·09; P < 0·001) showed a positive SDE effect on the child's length-for-age. The model also demonstrated a negative standardised indirect effect (SIE) of the sweet beverage consumption (SIE: −0·08; P = 0·003) and a positive effect of being ever breastfed (SIE: 0·06; P = 0·017) on the child's length-for-age through parental level of education as a mediator. This research underscores the crucial role of proper feeding practices and provides valuable insights for the development of targeted interventions, policies and programmes to improve nutritional well-being and promote adequate linear growth and development among young children facing similar challenges. Ensuring diet quality in the first 2 years of life is critical to preventing malnutrition and instilling healthy food preferences. Children's diet quality has changed little over time and inequalities by socioeconomic status, rural–urban residence, but also by food group may exist. Using data from the 2011, 2016 and 2019 demographic and health surveys (DHS), we estimated the prevalence and inequalities in the minimum diet diversity (MDD), minimum meal frequency (MMF) and minimum acceptable diet (MAD). We further assessed food group‐level inequities. In 2019, only 13.5% of children 6–23 months of age met the MDD, 55% met the MMF and only 11% met the MAD indicator. Absolute and relative measures of inequality were calculated. Modest increases in MDD, MMF and MAD were observed over the past decade (2011–2019). These modest improvements were concentrated in limited geographical areas, among children in wealthier households, and urban residents. Unhealthy practices such as bottle‐feeding and zero fruit and vegetables have been increasing; whereas, inequities in the consumption of nutrient‐dense foods have widened. Nevertheless, children from the wealthiest quintile also failed to meet the MDD. Multisectoral efforts that span from diversifying the food supply, regulating the marketing of unhealthy foods, and promoting minimal processing of perishables (i.e., to extend shelf‐life) are needed. Context‐adapted behavioural change communication along with nutrition‐sensitive social protection schemes are also needed to equitably improve the diet quality of children in Ethiopia. Bottles and teats are ubiquitously used for feeding infants and young children. Yet there are limited empirical studies on the scope of infant feeding bottles, their attributes, or their marketing claims. We report the first comprehensive survey on infant feeding bottles and teats in Germany. We aimed to explore the extent of bottles and teats available in Germany, describe their physical attributes and analyze their marketing claims. A cross‐sectional survey of German bottle and teat manufacturer websites was conducted between June and November 2022. Product attributes are presented with descriptive statistics and photographs. Marketing claims are summarized in a descriptive content analysis. We identified 41 brands encompassing 447 unique products (226 bottles, 221 teats). The majority of bottles were plastic (147, 65%) or glass (64, 28%), and the majority of teats were silicone (188, 85%). Most brands (38, 93%) promoted products using one or more inappropriate marketing claims, including equivalency to breastfeeding (29, 73%), idealization through technical or medical descriptions (23, 58%), claims on disease prevention (31, 78%), references to naturalness (29, 73%), infant autonomy (10, 25%), and endorsements from parents (10, 25%) or health professionals (11, 28%). The majority of bottles and teats available in Germany appear to be marketed inappropriately and hold the potential to undermine public health recommendations on infant and young child feeding. Therefore, we recommend Germany strengthens legislation on the marketing of bottles and teats in accordance with the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes. A small but growing body of research in pediatric feeding disorders asserts the importance of comprehensively measuring social significance of goals, procedures, and effects of intervention, and incorporating social validity into practice to inform treatment. This report sought to extend this literature by detailing procedures to measure and improve social validity during a clinical case of a 3.5‐year‐old during a home‐based intensive feeding program. A multiple baseline design demonstrated effectiveness of nonremoval and re‐presentation added to a treatment package. Repeated choice via direct child preference assessments informed demand fading and gradual progression across six feeding skill domains (medication, cup drinking, independence, texture, volume, variety) and arrangements of response effort (preference, skill) with layers of reinforcer parameters (quality, magnitude, rate, immediacy). Indices of happiness definitions were modified, and extinction bursts examined. Fostering a collaborative approach, caregivers provided detailed input on social validity measures pretreatment, at discharge, and long‐term follow‐up (6‐month, 1‐year), inclusive of both qualitative and quantitative responses, written and verbal communication, and permanent product data. Further implications for practitioners included detailing the process for caregiver training and generalization to family meals with siblings and community settings, and providing adaptable full‐text guidelines for free access/choice contexts. Background/aim: Preterm infants often continue to have feeding difficulties after hospital discharge. Parental use of assessment tools and collaboration with health professionals are important for the early diagnosis of postdischarge feeding difficulties. This methodological study examined the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Neonatal Eating Assessment Tool (NeoEAT)-Bottle-feeding in postdischarge preterm infants in Türkiye. Materials and methods: A Turkish version of the NeoEAT-Bottle-feeding was developed and applied to 321 mothers of preterm infants younger than 7 months of corrected age between August 2021 and December 2022. Cronbach's alpha, exploratory factor, confirmatory factor, item-total correlation, test-retest, and known-groups validity analyses were performed. Results: The Turkish NeoEAT-Bottle-feeding has 60 items in five factors explaining 55.785% of the total variance. Exploratory factor analysis indicated that the item factor loading ranged from 0.320 to 0.792. The known-group validity analysis confirmed that preterm infants with diagnosed feeding problems had higher total and subscale scores than those without (p = 0.001). The Cronbach's alpha (a) of the entire scale was 0.96. The item-total correlation coefficients were between 0.31 and 0.77 (p = 0.001). There was excellent agreement between test values and retest values obtained after a 2-week interval (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.930-1.000). Conclusion: The Turkish NeoEAT-Bottle-feeding was shown to be a reliable and valid parent-reported assessment tool for oral feeding skills and difficulties after neonatal intensive care unit discharge in bottle-fed preterm infants younger than 7 months of corrected age. Healthcare professionals can use this assessment tool during the initial evaluation of risk factors contributing to problematic feeding and to determine the effectiveness of planned interventions in preterm infants. The electrical penetration graph (EPG) allows researchers to obtain information on the feeding behavior of herbivorous piercing–sucking insects, mostly Hemiptera. Guidelines are proposed for designing and conducting EPG experiments on insect–plant interactions, and for analyzing and interpreting the data. Several statistical issues common in EPG experiments are discussed. Pre‐recording insect handling, wiring, and being tethered can affect feeding behavior and recommendations are made to minimize such stresses. Recording duration can have a large effect on some variables and interpretation of the data. The pros and cons of long vs. short recording duration are discussed, and suggestions are made for reconciling these conflicting concerns. Replicates lacking a specific waveform pose problems for analyzing variables associated with that waveform. Proper ways for handling these replicates when analyzing data are discussed. The waveform in progress when the recording ends will be terminated before it would naturally end; consequently, its duration will be artificially short (truncated). This creates a problem for calculating mean or median duration of waveform periods (a waveform period is a single occurrence of the waveform), especially for waveforms that tend to occur relatively few times during a recording and in long periods, such as waveforms E2 and G (phloem and xylem sap ingestion for aphids) or Xi (xylem sap ingestion for xylem feeders). Based on a detailed analysis (see the supporting information), guidance is given on how to calculate mean and median duration of waveform periods when the last period is truncated. A modified experimental design is suggested to avoid the problem of truncated waveform periods. Most EPG variables are interdependent, and their values can affect one another. This interdependence should be considered when drawing conclusions from the data. In studies on plant resistance against vascular sap‐feeders, variables that are associated with resistance encountered during the penetration route to the vascular tissue and those encountered in the vascular tissue are discussed. Purpose: This single‐group, quasiexperimental study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding position on the physiological parameters and feeding performance of term‐born infants with cleft lip and palate (CLP) in the preoperative period. Methods: The study sample consisted of 45 infants aged 0–6 months with CLP followed up preoperatively in our outpatient clinic between January 2021 and 2022. Infants who were being fed with a specialty bottle for babies with CLP and whose families consented to participate in the study were included. After 2 h of fasting, the infants were fed in the elevated supine (ESU) position for the first meal, then in the elevated side‐lying (ESL) position for the second meal after another 2 h of fasting. The infants' heart rate and oxygen saturation values before, during, and after each feed and indicators of feeding performance were compared between the positions. Results: There was no significant difference between the positions in terms of heart rate and oxygen saturation before, during, or after feeding (p >.05). There was no statistically significant difference in measures of feeding performance according to the infants' feeding position (p >.05). Conclusion: According to the findings obtained in this study, infants with CLP showed no statistically significant differences in heart rate, oxygen saturation, or feeding performance when fed in the ESL and ESU positions. Practice Implications: However, despite the lack of statistical significance, both physiological values and feeding performance tended to be better when the infants were fed in the ESL position, nurses can practice ESL position according to the infant's opposite direction of the side of the cleft lip or palate. The controversial topic of oral feeding while on noninvasive ventilation remains at the forefront of preterm intensive care management. The intersection of pulmonary, neurologic, and gastrointestinal maturation coalesces at a postmenstrual age that requires changes in practices compared with those used in older infants. Various animal models in the past decades aimed to gain physiological knowledge of noninvasive ventilation effects on the suck–swallow–breathe coordination sequence. However, the preterm infant poses nuanced anatomic challenges. Although concerns for oral feeding while on noninvasive ventilation include aspiration risks and potential inpatient obstacles, there is evidence to support the feasibility, initiation, and progression of oral feedings while an infant is supported on high-flow nasal cannula and continuous positive airway pressure. There is evidence to support that this may accelerate attainment of oral feeding milestones and, thus, eventual hospital discharge. More recent multidisciplinary institutional protocols may provide cautious guidance on evaluation and algorithms to assess infants who may benefit from initiation and advancement of oral feeding versus awaiting further maturation. Background: For caries risk assessment (CRA) tools for young children to be evidence‐based, it is important to systematically review the literature to identify factors associated with the onset of early childhood caries (ECC). Aim: This updated systematic review aimed to identify current evidence on caries risk in young children. Design: A comprehensive and systematic literature search of relevant databases was conducted to update a previous systematic review and identify risk factors associated with ECC. Potential risk factors were identified based on strength of association using odds ratios, hazard ratios, relative risk, etc. GRADE was used for rating quality evidence through consensus. Results: Twenty‐two studies met inclusion criteria for the search from mid‐2017 to 2021. Twenty‐five publications from the prior systematic review, from 1997 to mid‐2017, were also included. Several socioeconomic, behavioral, and clinical variables were identified as ECC risk factors. Factors included the following: age, socioeconomic status, frequency of and supervised toothbrushing, fluoride exposure, breast‐ and bottle‐feeding, feeding habits, absence of a dental home, past caries experience, active non‐cavitated lesions, visible plaque, enamel defects, and microbiome. Aim of the study The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of S-ECC in a group of preschool children from Romania and to evaluate the role of socio-behavioral factors in association with this condition. Material and methods 337 children aged between 3 and 5 years were included in this study after determining the sample size. This study was conducted as a questionnaire combined with a clinical examination which determined the DMFT index. After collecting the data from the questionnaire, the socio-behavioral factors were statistically analysed into determining which ones were associated with a high DMFT index. Results The prevalence of S-ECC in this group of preschool children was 31.80%. Some social and behavioral factors were significantly related to S-ECC and to a high DMFT index score such as bottle feeding (p=0.0001), frequently consumed sweet treats (p=0.0001), and irregular dentist visits (p=0.03). On the other hand, the type of toothbrush used (p=0.30), frequency of toothbrushing (p=0.68), and the usage of fluoride toothpaste (p=0.59) were not statistically associated with S-ECC. Conclusions The prevalence of S-ECC among Romanian preschool children is high, and its development and progression are strongly associated with different oral hygiene practices, dietary habits and preventive measures. Factors like maternal age [AOR = 1.09; 95% CI (1.04, 1.14)], educational status [AOR = 2.83; 95% CI (2.58, 3.10)], marital status [AOR = 1.16; 95% CI (1.09, 1.24)], maternal occupation [AOR = 0.76; 95% CI (0.73, 0.79)], media exposure [AOR = 0.80; 95% CI (0.76, 0.85)], wealth index [AOR = 1.21; 95% CI (1.15, 1.29)], sex of the household head [AOR = 1.17; 95% CI (1.12, 1.24)], family size [AOR = 1.06; 95% CI (1.01, 1.12)], number of under-five children [AOR = 1.11; 95% CI (1.04, 1.19)], place of delivery [AOR = 1.06; 95% CI (1.00, 1.12)], mode of delivery [AOR = 1.41; 95% CI (1.31, 1.52)], counseling on breastfeeding [AOR = 0.88; 95% CI (0.84, 0.92)], age of the child [AOR = 1.65; 95% CI (1.57, 1.75)], and residence [AOR = 1.64; 95% CI (1.56, 1.72)] were significantly associated with bottle-feeding practices. Conclusion: Nearly one out of seven children aged 0 to 23 months received bottle feeding in sub-Saharan African countries. Older mothers, higher mothers' educational status, unmarried women, richest families, non-working mothers, exposed to media, female-headed households, large family size, having one under-five children, home delivery, cesarean delivery, children aged 6–11 months, and urban residence were significantly associated with an increased risk of bottle feeding. Oral liquid forms, either commercial or compounded, are preferred in pediatrics due to their suitability for weight-based dosing and acceptability for children. The choice of dosing delivery devices associated with oral liquid forms is important to ensure accurate dosing, ease of administration, and patient safety. Given the prevalence of compounding in pediatric settings, this study aimed to investigate the practices among French university hospitals concerning the selection of dosing delivery devices associated with compounding oral liquid forms for children. An online survey was distributed to pharmacists involved in compounding in French university hospitals. The survey covered aspects such as the presence of child-resistant caps, types of dosing devices, the presence of bottle adapters, and the type of bottle adapters used. Among the 36 hospital pharmacies contacted, 24 responded to the survey. One pharmacy employed child-resistant caps for compounded liquid forms. Enteral syringes emerged as the primary dosing device (71%), with a minority using luer/luer-lock syringes (21%). Spoon and measuring cup usage was reported by none. Approximately two-thirds of the pharmacies (67%) used a bottle adapter in conjunction with the sampling device. Conclusion: The study highlighted diversity in the practices of French university hospitals regarding dosing delivery devices associated with compounding oral liquid forms for pediatric patients. Large population-based studies have suggested a link between increased alcohol use and reduced pain. In addition, these studies suggest that higher levels of pain intensity are associated with an increase in alcohol consumption and rates of hazardous drinking which potentiates the risk of developing alcohol use disorders (AUD). The mechanisms and determinants of the alcohol–pain interaction can be studied in preclinical studies. The overall goal of this study is to use animal models to explore the impact of acute postoperative pain on alcohol intake. To achieve this, we characterized the timeline and levels of alcohol intake and preference in mice after laparotomy in the 2-bottle choice paradigm. Our results show that laparotomy surgery increased alcohol intake and preference in male mice but not females in the 2-bottle choice and 3-bottle choice assays. In addition, ketoprofen administration blocked the increase in alcohol consumption in male mice after laparotomy. We also found that changes in alcohol initial sensitivity and acute functional tolerance, using loss of righting reflex (LORR) response, occur after surgery in mice. Objective: To examine the current trends and practices across disciplines for feeding infants with cleft palate with or without cleft lip and to describe provider training within this area Design: Prospective survey Setting: ACPA approved cleft palate teams and healthcare providers in the United States and Canada Participants: Interdisciplinary providers that regularly provide feeding services to infants with cleft palate Intervention: 50-item survey designed and distributed electronically via the ACPA Main Outcome Measures: Information on provider demographics and practice patterns Results: 76 respondents included providers in North America that have either currently or previously served on a cleft palate team. The majority of respondents were in speech-language pathology (49%) or nursing (38%) disciplines, worked in an outpatient setting (70%), and received no information (68%) regarding cleft palate feeding in their academic training. While specific practice patterns were relatively consistent across the respondent cohort, provider characteristics were significantly associated with squeezing the Haberman (p =.013) and likelihood of collaboration with other providers when counseling parents/caregivers (p =.039). Conclusions: While provider characteristics varied, there were similar practice patterns observed across disciplines. Background: Refeeding syndrome is the gravest possible medical complication in malnourished patients undergoing refeeding in the hospital. We previously reported that males with malnutrition secondary to eating disorders required more calories and had longer hospital stays than females; however, sex differences in electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk remain unknown. The objective of this study was to assess differences in electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk among male and female adolescents and young adults with eating disorders hospitalized for medical instability. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 558 patients aged 9–25 years admitted to the University of California, San Francisco Eating Disorders Program for medical instability between May 2012 and August 2020. Serum was drawn per standard of care between 5 and 7 am each morning and electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk were defined as: hypophosphatemia (< 3.0 mg/dL), hypokalemia (< 3.5 mEq/L), and hypomagnesemia (< 1.8 mg/dL). Logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk. Results: Participants included 86 (15.4%) males and 472 (84.6%) females, mean (SD) age 15.5 (2.8) years. Rates of refeeding hypophosphatemia (3.5%), hypokalemia (8.1%), and hypomagnesemia (11.6%) in males hospitalized with eating disorders were low, with no statistically significant differences from females. Older age was associated with higher odds of refeeding hypophosphatemia and hypomagnesemia. Lower percent median body mass index and greater weight suppression at admission were associated with higher odds of refeeding hypophosphatemia. Conclusions: Rates of electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk were low in males hospitalized for eating disorders and rates did not significantly differ from females. Together with our finding that males have higher caloric requirements and longer hospital length of stay, the finding that electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk were not greater in males than females supports future research to evaluate the safety and efficacy of higher calorie and/or faster advancing refeeding protocols for males. Background: Despite growing evidence of the impacts of exclusively breastfeeding infants during the first 6 months of life on preventing childhood infections and ensuring optimal health, only a small number of studies have quantified this association in South Asia. Methods: We analyzed data from the Demographic and Health Surveys in Afghanistan (2015; n = 3462), Bangladesh (2017–2018; n = 1084), India (2019–2021; n = 26,101), Nepal (2022; n = 581), and Pakistan (2017–2018; n = 1,306), including babies aged 0–6 months. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to determine the association between exclusive breastfeeding in the last 24 h and diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections, and fever in the two weeks before the survey. We also examined the association between other infant and young feeding indicators and these outcomes. Results: Infants who were exclusive breastfed had decreased odds of diarrhoea in Afghanistan (AOR: 0.49, 95% CI 0.35, 0.70), India (AOR: 0.80, 95% CI 0.70, 0.91), and Nepal (AOR: 0.42, 95% CI 0.20, 0.89). Compared with infants who were not exclusive breastfed, infants who were exclusively breastfed were less likely to have fever in Afghanistan (AOR: 0.36, 95% CI 0.26, 0.50) and India (AOR: 0.75, 95% CI 0.67, 0.84). Exclusive breastfeeding was associated with lower odds of acute respiratory infections in Afghanistan (AOR: 0.57, 95% CI 0.39, 0.83). Early initiation of breastfeeding was protective against diarrhoea in India. Bottle feeding was a risk factor for diarrhoea in India and for fever in Afghanistan and India. Bottle feeding was also a risk factor for acute respiratory infection in Afghanistan and India. Conclusions: Not exclusive breastfeeding is a risk factor for diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections, and fever in some South Asian countries. These findings could have substantial implications for global and national efforts to increase exclusive breastfeeding rates. Introduction: Cleft Lip (CL) and Cleft Palate (CP) are associated with several complications that have a significant negative impact on the Quality of Life (QoL) of affected children and caregivers. Compared to their healthy counterparts, children with these conditions experience feeding difficulties, cosmetic abnormalities, and, most importantly, diminished physical and cognitive growth, especially during the first year of their lives. Aim: To evaluate the growth parameters in CL and/or CP infants and the QoL of parents with a CL and/or CP child before and after primary surgery. Materials and Methods: For this observational study, data was collected longitudinally from the same set of Cleft lip and cleft palate (CL/CP)/CL&CP infants and their parents before and after the primary surgery. The study was conducted at the Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Guru Nanak Institute of Dental Sciences and Research, West Bengal, ABMSS Kolkata Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre, West Bengal, and IMA Vaccination Centre Barasat, West Bengal, India, from December 2020 to May 2022. In this study, 66 children and 64 parents were included in each study and control group. Growth parameters {weight, length, Head Circumference (HC)} were measured using a weight analogue machine, infantometer, and HC measuring tape, and compared with those of healthy infants. The QoL of parents with CL and/or CP infants was quantified using a questionnaire form of "Revised Impact on Family Scale (RIOFS)" filled out by parents before and after six months of primary surgery and compared with the QoL of same-age healthy infants. The responses to the RIOFS questionnaire were scored according to recommended guidelines. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Statistics 23.0 was used for data analysis. Results: Among the study groups, statistically significant differences in mean height, weight, and HC were observed between the groups of all infants with CL, CP, and CL with CP before and after the primary surgery (p<0.001). The QoL of parents from the study group improved post-surgery. The difference in mean RIOFS score between study Group-3 and study Group-4 after the primary surgery was statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: The growth of CL and/or CP infants and the QoL of their caregivers are compromised compared to healthy infants. To understand the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) counselor experiences discussing responsive bottle feeding during counseling and WIC participants' knowledge, understanding, and use of responsive bottle feeding. Qualitative descriptive, semistructured interviews with 23 participants (8 WIC counselors and 15 WIC participants) were conducted online via Zoom. The WIC counselors and mothers of WIC-enrolled bottle-fed infants were recruited through a network of WIC clinics in North Carolina. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and collaboratively analyzed using content analysis. The WIC participants received responsive infant feeding support from WIC counselors but often in the context of breastfeeding. WIC counselors provided valuable support for families but were challenged by limited training on responsive bottle feeding, balancing promoting breastfeeding with supporting mothers' feeding decisions, and time constraints. Findings provide preliminary support for the need to develop and pilot an intervention focused on promoting responsive feeding for parents of bottle-fed infants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To assess the effectiveness of interventions aimed at facilitating the transition from full tube to independent oral feeds in premature infants. Scoping review methodology using the Preferred Reporting items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA_ScR). A search of six databases (EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, COCHRANE, and OT Seeker), using keywords related to oral feeding and premature infants retrieved 11,870 articles. Full-text screening was completed for 36 articles, and 21 articles were included in this review. Review of the 21 articles revealed five intervention types: oral stimulation (n = 14), swallow/gustatory stimulation (n = 3), olfactory stimulation (n = 2), tactile/kinesthetic stimulation (n = 1), and auditory stimulation (n = 1). Oral stimulation had the most studies with consistent evidence supporting its beneficial effect to facilitate achievement to independent oral feeds, swallow/gustatory stimulation appeared to have some benefit, but evidence for olfactory, tactile/kinesthetic, and auditory stimulation was sparse. Oral stimulation has the most studies with consistent evidence, and thus is suggested as a suitable early intervention strategy that can be used by health providers to facilitate the achievement to independent oral feeds in premature infants. Importance: Infants who are born preterm often experience difficulty transitioning from full tube to independent oral feeds, which often prolongs their hospital stay. No clinical measures associated with attainment of independent oral feeds are currently available. Objective: To identify specific nutritive sucking measures associated with time to attainment of independent oral feeds among infants who are born preterm. Design: An observational cohort pilot study was undertaken. Setting: A Level 2 to Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit. Participants: Fourteen infants (7 male, 7 female) born at or less than 34 wk gestation were enrolled. Outcomes and Measures: The monitored suck measures included average suck strength (millimeters of mercury), average sucking burst duration (seconds), average suck count (number of sucks), and average pause duration (seconds). Time to independent oral feeds (days) and baseline characteristics were also monitored. The nutritive sucking measures were recorded once, during the first 5 min of an oral feed, when infants were taking an average of three to four oral feeds per day using a nipple monitoring device. Results: An inverse relation was found among average suck burst duration (p =.04), gestational age (p =.03), and days to attainment of independent oral feeds. Conclusions and Relevance: Study results suggest that average sucking burst duration, during the first 5 min of an oral feed, is associated with time to attain independent oral feeds. Objective: This cross-sectional study aims to examine the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) and sleep problems, their relationship, and the characteristics associated with depression/insomnia in Qassim, Saudi Arabia. Methods: An online survey was administered to a convenience sample of 395 mothers who had given birth within the preceding year. The survey comprised demographic characteristics, pregnancy and childbirth characteristics, depression (via the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale; EPDS), and sleep quality (via the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; PSQI). Results: Nearly two-thirds of respondents (62.3%) had PPD, while 92.2% experienced poor sleep quality. Both scales demonstrated a statistically significant positive correlation. Participants with previous PPD, peripartum depression, a personal or family history of other depression, those bottle-feeding their infants, or who had a change in sleep pattern scored significantly higher on the EPDS and had poorer PSQI scores. Respondents with a history of mental illness, pregnancy or delivery complications, those who lacked support, or gave birth to unhealthy newborns also had significantly higher EPDS scores. Conclusions: PPD and poor sleep quality were highly prevalent among mothers living in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. Not surprisingly, PPD was strongly correlated with poor sleep quality. Postpartum counseling for mothers during the first year after delivery is necessary to decrease the risk of developing depressive symptoms and poor sleep quality. Screening for sleep-related difficulties and depression in prenatal and postnatal programs may help prevent the development of depressive disorder among postpartum women in this region of Saudi Arabia (or other areas of the Middle East). Background: Preterm infants have imperfect neurological development, uncoordinated sucking-swallowing-breathing, which makes it difficult to realize effective oral feeding after birth. How to help preterm infants achieve complete oral feeding as soon as possible has become an important issue in the management of preterm infants. Non-nutritive sucking (NNS), as a useful oral stimulation, can improve the effect of oral feeding in preterm infants. This review aimed to explore the effect of NNS on oral feeding progression through a meta-analysis. Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, CINHAL, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane databases, China's National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang and VIP database from inception to January 20, 2024. Search terms included 'non-nutritive sucking' 'oral feeding' and 'premature.' Eligibility criteria involved randomized controlled studies in English or Chinese. Studies were excluded if they were reviews, case reports, or observational studies from which valid data could not be extracted or outcome indicators were poorly defined. The meta-analysis will utilize Review Manager 5.3 software, employing either random-effects or fixed-effects models based on observed heterogeneity. We calculated the mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for continuous data, and estimated pooled odds ratios (ORs) for dichotomous data. Sensitivity and publication bias analyses were conducted to ensure robust and reliable findings. We evaluated the methodological quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) utilizing the assessment tool provided by the Cochrane Collaboration. Results: A total of 23 randomized controlled trials with 1461 preterm infants were included. The results of the meta-analysis showed that NNS significantly shortened time taken to achieve exclusive oral feeding (MD = -5.37,95%CI = -7.48 to-3.26, p<0.001), length of hospital stay(MD = -4.92, 95% CI = -6.76 to -3.09, p<0.001), time to start oral feeding(MD = -1.41, 95% CI = -2.36 to -0.45, p = 0.004), time to return to birth weight(MD = -1.72, 95% CI = -2.54 to -0.91, p<0.001). Compared to the NNS group, the control group had significant weight gain in preterm infants, including weight of discharge (MD = -61.10, 95% CI = -94.97 to -27.23, p = 0.0004), weight at full oral feeding (MD = -86.21, 95% CI = -134.37 to -38.05, p = 0.0005). In addition, NNS reduced the incidence of feeding intolerance (OR = 0.22, 95% CI = 0.14 to 0.35, p<0.001) in preterm infants. Conclusion: NNS improves oral feeding outcomes in preterm infants and reduces the time to reach full oral feeding and hospitalization length. However, this study was limited by the relatively small sample size of included studies and did not account for potential confounding factors. There was some heterogeneity and bias between studies. More studies are needed in the future to validate the effects on weight gain and growth in preterm infants. Nevertheless, our meta-analysis provides valuable insights, updating existing evidence on NNS for improving oral feeding in preterm infants and promoting evidence-based feeding practices in this population. Objective: There are no clear evidence-based recommendations concerning when patients with prenatally diagnosed choledochal cysts (CCs) should undergo surgery. This study was primarily designed to explore the proper timing of minimally invasive surgery for prenatally diagnosed CC patients. Methods: Seventy-three patients with prenatally diagnosed CC were enrolled in this study and divided into 4 subgroups according to age at surgery (15 patients in the < 1 month group, 27 in the 1–2 months group, 14 in the 2–3 months group and 17 in the > 3 months group). Eighty-five healthy infants were recruited and divided into 4 age groups (29 in the < 1 month group, 20 in the 1–2 month group, 19 in the 2–3 month group and 17 in the > 3 month group). Preoperative data were collected and compared between CC patients and healthy controls in 4 age groups. Additionally, 73 patients were divided into laparoscopic and open groups to compare postoperative recovery indices and the occurrence of complications to determine the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic CC application in neonates and young infants. Results: Twenty-one of 73 (28.8%) patients who were prenatally diagnosed with CCs experienced various clinical symptoms, and 15 of 21 (71.4%) patients experienced clinical symptoms less than 2 months after birth. No differences were found in alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) or aspartate transaminase (APRI) levels between CC patients and controls at ≤ 1 month or 1–2 months of age (all p > 0.05), while higher levels were found in CC patients at 2–3 months or > 3 months of age (all p < 0.05). ALT, AST and DBIL levels 1 week after surgery were significantly lower than those before surgery in CC patients who underwent laparoscopic CC excision at > 2 months of age, while DBIL levels 1 week after surgery were also significantly lower than those before surgery in patients who underwent CC excision at ≤ 2 months of age. The initial oral feeding time in the laparoscopic surgery group was significantly earlier than that in the open surgery group for both CC patients who underwent CC excision at ≤ 2 months of age and those > 2 months of age (all p < 0.05). No differences were found in the rates of anastomotic leakage or stricture formation between the laparoscopic and open surgery groups at ≤ 2 months or > 2 months of age. Conclusion: Most clinical symptoms attributed to CC occur less than 2 months after birth, while liver function and liver fibrosis may deteriorate after 2 months of age in patients with prenatally diagnosed CC. Laparoscopic surgery for CC in newborns and young infants (either less than or more than 2 months old) is safe and feasible and can shorten the initial oral feeding time without increasing complications such as postoperative anastomotic leakage or stricture.
