The present article considers the origins, characteristics and diffusion of the rococo, highlighting, especially, ornamentation in eighteenth-century Brazilian manuscripts. Despite the existence of stylistic studies, the peculiarities of rococo development deserve analysis that is always current and detailed, above all in order to understand better the influence that Frenchen graving exercised over the creation, development and diffusion of the style in Europe and Brazil. An emphasis on graphic ornamentation is the basis of the analysis concerning the particularities of the style, making possible a greater understanding of the significance which the design assumes as an authentic manifestation of art and allowing it to be established that the rococo became a singular reality in Brazilian artistic expression. Ethnic congregations are often considered safe havens for immigrants. This is supported by a large body of literature showing that many religious congregations in diasporic contexts help immigrants maintain their ethnic group identity and cohesion, build social capital, and adapt more smoothly to life in an unfamiliar society. The role of ethnic congregations in the lives of immigrants is, however, complex and multifaceted, and some recent research suggests that, in some ways, these congregations may inhibit their adaptation to the larger society and arouse tensions among the very immigrant communities they intend to help. In light of these varying observations, we seek to explore the functions—and potential dysfunctions—that ethnic congregations have among Brazilians who have immigrated to central Texas. Using data drawn in 2013 from participant observation and 16 in-depth interviews conducted in two Brazilian evangelical congregations, we find that respondents perceive that their congregations strengthen their feelings of attachment to Brazilian culture and language and foster the development of social capital within to the Brazilian immigrant community. At the same time, however, some respondents acknowledge that church members can become overly dependent on their congregations and isolated from the larger society, leaving them susceptible to potential exploitation at the hands of more established co-ethnics within the congregation. In this article, I critically engage with and develop an alternative approach to ontological security informed by Jacques Lacan’s theory of the subject. I argue that ontological security relates to a lack; that is, the always frustrated desire to provide meaningful discursive interpretations to one’s self. This lack is generative of anxiety which functions as the subject’s affective and necessary drive to a continuous, albeit elusive, pursuit of self-coherence. I theorise subjectivity in Lacanian terms as fantasised discursive articulations of the Self in relation to an idealised mirror-image other. The focus on postcolonial states’ subjectivity allows for the examination of the anxiety-driven lack generated by the ever-present desire to emulate but also resist the Western other. I propose, therefore, to explore the theoretical assertion that postcolonial ontological security refers to the institutionalisation and discursive articulation of enduring and anxiety-driven affective traces related to these states’ colonial pasts that are still active and influence current foreign policy practices. I illustrate the force of this interpretation of ontological security by focusing on Brazil as an example of a postcolonial state coping with the lack caused by its ambivalent/hybrid self-identity. The concept of spiritual-religious coping gained attention in Brazil with the adaptation and validation of the RCOPE Scale (Panzini 2004; long version: 87 items and brief version: 49 items). The Brief RCOPE still contains a large number of items, so attempts to further reduce the size of the measure are relevant. This study presents the validation process of the Brief SRCOPE scale (14 items) for use in the Brazilian context. Data were collected from the general population (N = 525) and subjected to exploratory factor analysis (EFA; n = 249) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA; n = 276). The EFA resulted in a two-factor solution: Positive Religious Coping (PRC) and Negative Religious Coping (NRC). All 14 items of the original scale were retained and correlated with the same factor as the original scale (KMO = 0.852; 58.15% of total variance explained; PRC Cronbach's alpha = 0.884 and NRC Cronbach's alpha = 0.845). The model tested through CFA showed adequate adjustment indices (χ2 = 146.809, DF = 70, χ2/DF = 2.097, NFI = 0.93, CFI = 0.962, GFI = 0.930, AGFI = 0.895, RMSEA = 0.063, PCLOSE = 0.065 and SRMR = 0.0735). The Brief SRCOPE Scale-14 has shown reliability for the studied sample and might be applicable to other contexts. It may ultimately prove useful to professionals and researchers interested in better knowing how people make use of religious coping to face stress and suffering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyzes the village policies in the margins of Tocantins and Araguaia Rivers undertaken by the governing authorities of the Província de Goiás, between 1822 and 1850. Our main hypothesis is that the villagization processes were triggered by two intrinsically linked processes: the action and resistance of the indigenous who represented an obstacle to the transformation of nature into capital good, upon which the "future of civilization" depended, at the same time serving as justification for the civilizing speech which supported the villagization process. Despite a century's worth of work, lacunae remain in our understanding of the religion-health relationship. Scholars in this field have called for increasingly sophisticated conceptualizations of religiosity that refine its connection to well-being, accounting for both positive and negative associations, while being sensitive to the cultural variations in the experience of religion. This article argues that cognitive anthropological methods provide a novel approach to these issues by conceptualizing aspects of religion as culturally shared 'styles of life.' Specifically, the combined approaches of cultural consensus and cultural consonance provide an emically valid measure of religiosity that is then linked to health through the psychosocial stress paradigm. Utilizing research among Brazilian Pentecostals within the state of São Paulo, this intrareligious study evaluates the predictive power of religious cultural consonance relative to widely used and established religiosity scales. Religious consonance is found to have a stronger correlation with psychological well-being than comparable measures, suggesting that existing standardized measures miss important dimensions of the religion-health relationship. The purpose of this article is to address the impact of a television documentary on the religious ritual of body purification achieved by Barbalha City Penitents in the hinterland Cariri in Ceará, Brazil. This is the impact of the publicity brought by a media narrative to a religious tradition based on oral tradition and the preservation of the cultural identity of its members. Addresses questions about penance in the popular Catholicism and the consequences of media exposure and spectacle of religious ritual of self-flagellation. The methodology involves literature, documentary research with analysis of the television documentary produced by the Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão (SBT) and interviews with the last remaining penitents of Barbalha group belonging to the so-called Brotherhood of the Cross. Increasingly modern organizations have realized the need to know culture's points to prepare the leaders for everyday relationship with the media. This actual study investigated the Brazilian culture modeling and the performance of the Media Training professionals. Through this exploratory research, qualitative nature, assisted by historical-critical method, were conducted interviews between 2013 and 2015 with Media Training actives in the state of São Paulo. The results of this research indicate the Brazilian culture modeling like essential factors in the building of the organization image as an element of competitive advantage. Neo-Pentecostalism is notable for its emphasis on 'prosperity theology,' the belief that economic prosperity is available to the faithful. Members give monetary offerings in exchange for later blessings of financial prosperity. Despite the faith's rapid growth worldwide, the influence of prosperity theology on believers' lives is still being understood. This mixed-method study examines Brazilian neo-Pentecostal rituals through the dual paradigms of religious signaling and cognitive dissonance theory. Signaling theory posits that costly behaviors, such as giving significant sums of money, are honest signs of an individual's intent toward group cooperation. Cognitive dissonance theory suggests that individuals will justify the costly signals required by overvaluing membership in the group. The integration of these two approaches provides a comprehensive model for costly ritual participation by addressing both social and individual motivating factors. This study furthers our understanding of neo-Pentecostalism by examining how prosperity theology rituals influence behaviors, cognitions, and the psychological well-being. A integração dessas duas abordagens oferece um modelo mais abrangente para a participação nos rituais, abordando ambos os fatores sociais e individuais de motivação. These topics were derived from different kinds of interpretations about the country, sustained in dualities such as tradition and rupture, iberianism and americanism, centralization and decentralization, State control and social autonomy. In order to link these subjects to understand the characteristics of a democratic thinking, we have analyzed the works written from the Empire to Republic by Visconde do Uruguai, Tavares Bastos, Euclides da Cunha, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda and Gilberto Freyre. Futhermore, we have remarked how political science and sociological analysis advocated a demiurgical action of the State on society and developed a sort of understanding about sociability.

In the past three decades, observers have noted a steady rise in religious leaders’ engagement in Brazilian politics. What motivates this new activism? One prominent theory focuses on threat from religious competitors; other scholars point to church-state relations or theologically-driven political grievances. I argue that because of institutional and theological differences, Catholic and Protestant clergy are motivated into political action by different kinds of threat. I draw on two question order experiments embedded in a face-to-face survey of clergy prior to Brazil's 2014 election to examine how clergy react to threats from religious competition and from elected politicians. Threat from religious competition is associated with changes in topics of preaching among Catholics, who substitute social justice for personal morality messages. Protestant clergy instead react to ideological, policy-based threats, and secularization; these latter threats explain the much higher political engagement among Pentecostal and evangelical than Catholic clergy in 2014. The survival of late medieval Mediterranean techniques to conceive and build ships and boats in Brazil was noted by John Patrick Sarsfield in the 1980s, but his study of the Valença shipwrights was interrupted by his untimely death in 1990. This paper summarizes Sarsfield's account of these shipbuilding techniques, examines that published by Lev Smarcevski (1996), and provides some preliminary results of the pilot stage of a project to further research traditional shipbuilding in Valença and the Baía de Todos os Santos region. The artistic and cultural promotion in the State of Paraná has the Guaira Theater Cultural Center one of its main instruments. The activity developed by the Cultural Centre discusses the role of the state as promoter of artistic and cultural development. The purpose was to discuss the difficulties and dilemmas for the Guaira Theater Cultural Center as a promoter of cultural policy in the State of Paraná. The research showed that despite the creation of a cultural industry in Brazil it is still dependent on state action. We discussed the formation of the cultural industry and dilemmas experienced by this industry despite its great development and incentives for international organizations. It was used the concept of «cost disease» by William Baumol to illustrate the problem. Finally, it is described the difficulties of managing a cultural institution which is not as flexible as a private organization. Right from the start, Adolfo Coelho's work grabbed the attention of Brazilians interested in issues about the Portuguese language. The anthropological and political dimensions, however, were of less interest at that time in Portugal and Brazil. The two countries developed divergent views of the concept of povo - one of Coelho's themes. In both places and views, positivism prevailed - but in Brazil it was a powerful instrument in countering the efficacy of popular culture, as no author comparable to Adolfo Coelho had arisen who would argue that the povo were a subject of conscience and an object of understanding. The transition to democracy in Brazil has created a competitive religous environment which is causing religious shifting away from Catholicism. The Evangelical community, of which Pentecostalism is a subset, has been growing over the last few decades and is providing alternative structures for social and political expression previously denied to many. Pentecostal churches are building community networks and strengthening civil society in a way that is giving many of Brazil's marginalized access and legitimacy. The article analyses the uses of feminine travel narratives in the construction of the Freyrean model for the interpretation of Brazilian culture. The objective is to question the convergences and contrasts between the formation principles listed by Gilberto Freyre in Sobrados e Mucambos and the role of Brazilian society in Adèle Toussaint-Samson's book, Uma Parisiense no Brasil. The French writer's notes are one of the sources of inspiration and work of the sociologist. It is relevant to show the tensions caused by the reception of the ideas and the writings of the nineteenth century travelers. As this article focuses on the Freyrean approach in handling sources, it also reflects the hypothesis of a one-way colonialism from France to Brazil, following the example of re-Europeanization, which holds the transatlantic contacts and exchanges only as influences. The article discusses the education and training of teachers in the Paraná state of Brazil in the field of religious education. The article focuses on the work of Brazilian intellectuals of the Instituto Superior de Estudos Brasileiros on the social history of Brazil, including Roland Corbisier, Nelson Werneck Sodré, Alvaro Vieira Pinto, Alberto Guerreiro Ramos, and Roberto Campos. Particular focus is given to the analysis of Brazilian culture, as well as the concepts of alienation, cultural imitation, and imperialism developed by them from 1954 to 1960. Subjects discussed include the transformation of samba into the national music of Brazil, the rise of Brazilian national identity, and the regionalist movement led by sociologist Gilberto Freyre.

The objective of this study is to construct a historical and critical overview of Brazilian silent films and to examine their significant and meaningful relationship with modernity and Brazilian culture through a set of representations and discourses circulated by cinema on a mass scale. The author argues that silent films were the start of a social imaginary that helps to sustain the civilizing matrix of modernity; that is, industrialization, urban development, technology and rationalization. This article combines ethnomusicology and symbolic boundary theory to explain musical boundary-work: the creation, interpretation, and use of music to reinforce, bridge, or reshape symbolic boundaries for social, political, spiritual, or other purposes. The multi-faith and multi-ethnic Afrogaucho religious community of metropolitan Porto Alegre, in southern Brazil, serves as the case study, because practitioners use musical liturgy to combine and segregate the Batuque, Umbanda, and Quimbanda religions and their denominations. This essay introduces the community, highlighting ethnoracial identity politics, and describes processes of musical boundary-work within the community, focusing on local concepts of crossing and purity. The article analyzes the transformation of representations of Brazil in the context of globalization. From a field research conducted among agents in charge of the creation and simultaneous globalization of the discourse about the existence of a "Brazilian fashion", we could perceive current uses of Brasilianness in global and market terms. Such uses reveal a passage from the "mestizo" to the "diverse" as the typical characteristic of Brazilianness, a notion that is now conceived in its plural form. This conception is based on a perspective that tries to enumerate differences rather than subsume them into a single type, since the enumeration of the so-called national diversity would be the most convenient posture to adopt within the world market of symbolic goods, in which the notion of "cultural diversity" currently takes prime position. Throughout our history, the idea of Brazil has been the subject of several elaborations, in general combining political and aesthetic aspects. However, at the turn of the third millennium this process has taken a new shape. Appropriations and reworkings of the idea of Brazil multiplied. The initiatives were everywhere, reaching different sectors of cultural and artistic production, the media and especially the market. The objective of this paper is to present the results of a documentary research project on the topic conducted in the course of the 2000s, which indicate two basic changes in comparison to the movements in the 20th century: the displacement of political interest to marketing, as well as of the emphasis on national identity to cultural diversity. The article discusses the history and administration of Portuguese royal education in America in the 18th century, in relation to the history of education in Brazil. Topics mentioned include the role of education in Brazil in establishing institutional and social relations in Brazilian society, the political-administrative and judicial structures of the Portuguese administration in Brazil, and educational structures established under Portuguese rule.

The aim of this paper is to present an introduction to postcolonial thought from its origin, the main areas of study and from possible dialogues between the Anglophone and Latin American traditions. To do that, we analyze the notions of subalternity, decolonization and hybridity as a theoretical possibility to explore the post-colonial perspective in the Brazilian critical organization studies. Although the debate on post-colonialism and subordination is relatively new in organizational studies, in and out of Brazil, the literature review in the area shows that, even outside the context of post-colonial demarche, many works produced about management and organizations in Brazil took into account the same concerns of postcolonial authors. Indirectly, the works address topics that are related to the effects of colonialism on the contemporary world and still recognize the need to decolonize this field of study when considering the question of cultural dependency in Brazilian intellectual tradition and technology transfer between managerial countries of the center and the periphery, when problematize the use of theories produced in the Global North and seek references that value a look from the Global South, and they identify the strong presence of the dynamic Brazilian cultural hybridity. On the other hand, when analyzing the field of critical studies in Brazil, we find the presence of a dichotomy that tends to radicalize the center/ periphery relationship with the separation between a supposedly Brazilian critical study on organizations and critical management studies (CMS). Such distinction performs an intellectual binarism typical of colonial mentality. Such mentality in this particular case seeks to define what is and is not critical approach in Management and Organization Studies. Aiming to challenge such binary wisdom, we propose a hybridization process that aim to reconcile the two poles of the binary perspective. To conclude, we argue that the theoretical and political development of both sides depends on a perspective that exploits the fissures of colonial discourse and from a third space perspective reconfigures knowledge production. The author reflects on her experience as a Brazilian immigrant in France, focusing on her poetry as a connection with her Brazilian identity. Particular attention is given to her poetry book "Locus Brasilis," from which several poems are presented. Topics include a historical overview of the cultural relations between France and Brazil, the 16th-century French colony in Brazil known as France Antarctique, and the book "Histoire d'un voyage faict en la terre du Brésil" by French Huguenot Pastor Jean de Léry.

Taken out of Chinese cultural context, Daoism is often associated with physical cultivation practices such as qigong or taijiquan rather than the traditional lineages of Quanzhen or Zhengyi a hierarchically organized religion. The Daoist Society of Brazil, however, is an example of non-Chinese Daoist practice associated with the Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) tradition. The society's ordained Brazilian priests perform rituals before a largely non-Chinese lay congregation. The result is a cultural hybrid form of Daoist practice that provides insight into how Daoism is transforming through globalization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The classic historiography presents Brazilian Independence as a singular event, generally isolated from what was happening in the rest of the continent and without reference to the military and political Napoleonic influence. This article has as its main purpose to understand Brazilian emancipation in a much broader context and to demonstrate the ample Napoleonic presence and influence within military struggles in the construction of the new State allowing the integration of Brazil into a movement already experience by the rest of the continent. The "benzedeiras", folk healers, common throughout all Brazilian territory, are people who keep traditional healing practices, which they exert in their office as intermediaries between man and the divine, between the sacred and the profane. This mediation of perception and intervention over the maladies of those who solicit the healer"s help takes place through ritual practices and specific corporeal processes developed in the trajectory of these agents, which allow them to interact and negotiate with the sacred dimension. The text intends to analyze the usage and manifestation of these sensorycorporeal processes, "Gifts", of the folk healers from the municipality of Rebouças (PR) through the paradigm of embodiment proposed by Thomas Csordas (CSORDAS, 2008). Thus, this text presents an understanding of "Gifts" as somatic modes of attention, modes culturally defined of being attentive with and to the body in an intersubjective environment. After substituting Machado de Assis as the main columnist of carioca's Gazeta de Notícias newspaper, Olavo Bilac proposed to his public a change in literary language. However, he mantained one of the characteristics of other nineteenth century writers' chronicles, more prominently in Machado de Assis' ones, in terms of the focus on Rio de Janeiro's daily problems. The analysis of some of their columns allow to shadow light two distinct interpretations about Argentinian history, about Brazilian society and about Argentina-Brazil relations, between the final crisis of the Empire regime and the Rio de Janeiro's urban reforms of the beginning of the twentieth century. The research aimed to describe children's play in an Amazonian community, relating them to the riverine context and style of life. The instruments used were the sociodemographic inventory and spontaneous play, the naturalistic observation and the field notes. Twenty-two families participated in this study, including 125 residents: 66 children/adolescents and 59 adults. Initially the community was characterized and physical space used for play was identified, associated to the social context. It was found that the play expressed a typically riverine culture, influenced by the river and the forest, representing domestic issues and aspects relating to the means of subsistence. Despite the barrier imposed by the forest and river, which limit contact between peers and prioritize the interactions within the family, the children's culture has been active, creating strategies for social gatherings, as in the case of the school and the soccer field. It is concluded that the riverine culture linked to the typically Amazonian contexts, provide different and specific ways to play. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a study on the literary representation of indigenous people and their evolution through time as an icon in the Brazilian imaginary and as a cultural reference in continuous transformation and interpretative dislocation. It includes a review spanning from Romantic stereotypes to vanguard subversions of Brazilian modernism, including the notions of inclusion and exclusion in the imaginary of the nation, and it questions recent ethnographic fiction. The places for the celebration of faith in Rio de Janeiro were a focus of dispute between the various Roman Catholic religious orders in the initial settlement that would centuries later become the present day metropolis. However, one place - known as Largo da Misericòrdia - stands out for its social and cultural uses, its landscape values, its morphology that influenced the city's structural development and, ironically, for being one of the few colonial sites that has held the same name since the second half of the 16th century. In spite of urban fragmentation, the result of the contemporary metropolitan dynamics, the place was the first largo of the city and its structure still conserves traces of its original morphology, revealing an authentic residual landscape preserving much of its formal elements but with very little of the original symbolic meanings. The article discusses aspects of education perceived by researchers in a school in elementary school about the quality of life in the school environment and relevance of these aspects in the formation and construction of citizen learners. To this end, activities were primarily developed as survey questionnaires and games. Later, emphasizing the areas of Natural Sciences, actions have been addressed, demonstrating a lack of issues of Environmental Education, by the students, weakening the construction of critical and active citizens in the middle where they live.
